Apeer Hits New Heights Of Efficiency

A state-of-the art, IT-driven efficiency initiative is taking production at Apeer Doors to new heights.

The Northern Ireland based composite door manufacturer has implemented a highly sophisticated system that extends its previous barcoding scheme to include minute-by-minute timesheet monitoring and management of production employees and key line managers.

Group ICT manager for Apeer, Eddie McStravick said:
“Each employee works to an individual timesheet which provides them with their specific workload for the day and includes built-in quality checks for every job.

“The aim is to eliminate any quality issues, ensure each employee is totally accountable for every piece of work they do – and also highlight any training issues there may be.”
The new initiative further develops the company’s barcoding and scanning procedure which ensures production staff know exactly what is being worked on and what is coming up, allowing for maximised workload management.
Eddie said: “The new workstation log-in system allows us to centrally monitor and micro-manage the production flow. We know exactly how long each task takes and at the end of it, automatic quality checks ensure every single item going through our production process is as it should be.”
The new system has already reduced lead times by an average of 1.5 days and improved on-time deliveries to 99% during the past financial quarter. More planned improvements – due to be introduced by August – will further support quality controls.

Apeer MD Asa McGillian said:
“This has been a major initiative for us and represents a hefty investment for the company. It covers individual workstations for around 100 staff over two shifts but we are already seeing significant benefits from the system. It allows us to keep a very tight handle on what everyone is doing as well as ensure rigorous quality control checks at every step in the production process.”
For more information on Apeer products:  visit www.apeer.co.uk call 028 2563 2200 or email: sales@apeer.co.uk

Supplying doorsets to the education sector that make the grade

Performance doorset manufacturer Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw has a wealth of experience working within the education sector and has successfully supplied more than 11,000 performance doorsets to schools in the past year.

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw not only offers a range of high quality products, it understands the regulatory requirements and best practice guidance that applies to educational institutions and provides a flexible service designed to ensure the right doorsets are specified on each project.

Simon Broadly, Design and Specification Manager, said:
“We engage with our education clients at the earliest design stage so that we can create customised specifications where required. We also have a thorough knowledge of Department for Education (DfE) guidance and how it impacts on the performance doorsets that are specified.”

Alongside the highest fire and acoustic standards Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s products address issues specific to educational environments, as detailed in the DfE’s Standard Specifications, Layouts and Dimensions guidance relating to internal doorsets.

For example the document states:

“Doorsets should be specified wherever possible, rather than specifying separate components such as leaves, frames and architraves,” for certification and ease of installation purposes. Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s integrated doorset concept answers this need by providing a fully certified doorset that incorporates all the essential ironmongery and has guaranteed performance.

Dangers associated with automatically shutting fire-safety doors in areas populated by children can be mitigated by the company’s Sentinel hand and finger protection system which has rounded profiles to prevent fingers becoming trapped. While Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s anti-microbial additive, Hygienilac, kills 99.9% of harmful bacteria and can be incorporated into door veneers in schools where it is important to contain the spread of infection.

In addition Envision, a translucent door facing material that can be specified on all Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s performance doorsets, allows high definition, photographic images or graphics to be incorporated into a door, transforming it into an educational tool.

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s broad range of innovative products ensures it is able to offer a variety of solutions to the education sector. Recently it has successfully manufactured and installed doorsets at the Colchester Academy, Bradford’s Rainbow Free School and Smestow School in Wolverhampton.

Bonhams to offer ex-1930 Mille Miglia Class winning OM 665 SS MM Superba at Goodwood Revival in September

The historically significant 1930 OM 665 SS MM Superba is to be offered at Bonhams Goodwood Revival auction on Saturday 13th September 2014.

Boasting an impeccable competitive career, the pre-war sports racing car began life with class winning success in the gruelling Mille Miglia 1000 mile race around Italy in 1930. It continued with entries in a number of the most noted endurance races of its day including the Targa Florio and Tourist Trophy.

Perhaps lesser known than other Italian thoroughbreds, OM, which stood for Officine Meccaniche and translates as 'Mechanical Workshops' brought its engineering expertise from the manufacture of locomotives and rolling stock into motor car production in 1917 with the acquisition of Brescia based car builder Zust. The four and six cylinder cars that they built through the 1920s and 1930s were proven to be particularly competitive, achieving numerous wins in National and Regional events, firmly establishing their reputation with first, second and third place finishes in the 1927 Mille Miglia.

After its career in international racing the OM was stored away in the Midlands of the United Kingdom, until decades later reappearing when discovered in the 1960s. Recognition of its importance today can be attributed to the exhaustive research made by its owners in this period who have systematically pursued any leads to its history in an age when those associated with the car in the 1930s were still alive.

James Knight, Bonhams Global Head of Motoring, said:
“The Bonhams Goodwood Revival sale is an annual spectacular of classic motoring – with this year is set to be no different. Bonhams motoring department is again set to display some spectacular cars, today announcing the first of this intriguing list: the OM.

“Of most interest for the SS MM - or SS Mille Miglia model - is its automatic acceptance for the legendary Mille Miglia race, by way of having originally competed in this event in period. This hallowed status enables its next custodian to relive successes of the likes of Bassi and Gazzabini on the arduous 1000 mile course as well as numerous other events.

“Initial thoughts are that the OM should realize a high six-figure sum. It has been sympathetically restored and comes with one of the most comprehensive history files we have seen, having passed through a handful of noted collectors all the while being actively campaigned as it had in period.”
Viewing for the auction commences on Thursday 11th September and entries are still welcome.

For a full listing of upcoming sales, plus details of Bonhams specialist departments go to www.bonhams.com.

Assa Abloy Security Solutions Preserving British Canals And Rivers

ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions has supplied products to the Canal & River Trust, which takes care of 2,000 miles of waterways in England and Wales.

The charity is responsible for maintaining canals and rivers that are often over 200 years old, as well as protecting the network of bridges, embankments, towpaths, aqueducts, docks and reservoirs. The British waterway network is an important part of British heritage and provides a vital environmental resource for residents, schools and tourists to interact with history and wildlife.

Lincoln Security specified UNION and ASSA products, to be fitted throughout pump houses, front gates and meeting rooms, to provide controlled access to the facilities across England and Wales, ensuring that the canals and rivers are open and safe for visitors to enjoy.

UNION’s euro-profile StrongBOLTTM lock case was supplied, which is ideal for first or retrofit installation, as its design eliminates the need for tooling to avoid spoiling the aesthetics of doors. UNION has a range of  StrongBOLTTM products including Euro and Oval profile cylinders lock cases that could be suited across the entire installation.

ASSA’s Twin Combi 5800 cylinders were also installed to provide high security and resistance to any known method of picking, the cylinder also allows for master key systems to be integrated for continuity of key management. ASSA’s 3088 deadlock was also supplied and connected to the intruder alarm, to allow the system to be set when the key triggers the switch.

Sean Falkinder, Sales Development Manager at Lincoln Security, said:
“Some of the Trust’s buildings are listed, so we had to come up with a solution to allow the entrances to be on the new masterkey system, without unnecessary mortising to the precious doors. So, we designed surface fitting housings to accept UNION’s horizontal cases and the ASSA cylinder, so any marks left on the door would be covered.”

Paul Johnson, Commercial Manager for ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, said:
“Canals and rivers are a national asset of intrinsic value, reflecting Britain’s emergence as the first industrial nation. So it is fitting that UNION, a heritage brand that still manufactures in the UK, has been able to provide a solution to help protect and conserve Britain’s waterways for future generations to enjoy.”

Green Gate Access Systems distribute World’s largest Vertical Lifting Gate

Kent based company Green Gate Access Systems, has announced that it has been chosen as the exclusive distributor for SMOES vertically lifting gates in the Eastern part of the UK. Managing Director, Neil Sampson, returned just last week from Italy, where he visited SMOES Director, Loris Gentili and SMOES Sales Director, Nicole Corine Pettermand, to rubberstamp the exciting collaboration.

The unique Avant gate product range from SMOES comprise vertically lifting gates that can be installed in locations not suitable for a standard gate, such as small spaces, sloping roadways, areas with no roll back space for a slider and car-parks where access is tight.
The commercial gates are available up to 2 metres high and 10 metres wide, with the domestic range, up to 1.8 metres high and 6 metres wide. Built to an extremely high standard and supplied with an EN 13241-1 certification, the gates are well finished and most importantly, safe. With all versions available in a wide range of finishes, from a plain security gate to an arch topped ornamental or even wood effect, and a comprehensive range of colours provided as standard, Neil Sampson is confident they are the future of the industry.
“The SMOES range is fantastic and we are delighted to be introducing this to the UK market. The opportunities are almost endless and this product has an exciting path ahead.” says Neil.
“Basically there is nothing like this currently available. The fact that they lift, means they can be installed in locations where a normal gate just won’t function. For areas where a security gate is required but the ground is sloping, space is tight or there is no room off to the sides, so you cannot swing or slide a normal gate, this is the perfect solution. The other important factor with this range is that the gates arrive pre-assembled, so installation is always within one day! This is a product that once seen, will start to roll out as rapidly in the UK as it has done in Italy and Germany already. It is a unique solution to a common problem and you need to see it to believe it. It really is that good.”
“We welcome Green Gate Access Systems to our exclusive list of European installers and suppliers.” says Nicole Corine Pettermand.
“We are adamant that those representing our product and service demonstrate the ability to both install our equipment efficiently and undertake the SMOES codes of practice with regards to safety and security. Neil and his company more than satisfy this criterion and we are delighted to have them on board.”
The first UK launch will take place at FENCEX 2014, on 15th October.

About SMOES Ltd
SMOES Ltd is a young, dynamic company of approximately 50 employees that has been involved in the area of hydraulics since 1993. An expansion into the production of vertically opening gates and barriers in 2009 has broadened its market and it now sells these patented products with unique features, which they believe will revolutionise automatic closing systems for both commercial and domestic use in the future.

All-New Ford Mustang Heads Silverstone Classic Line-Up

A cavalcade of more than 160 classic Ford Mustangs, led by the next-generation 2015 model, is set to thrill visitors to the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, the Silverstone Classic, next weekend (25-27 July).

The track parade around the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit is part of the Mustang Owners Club’s 50th birthday celebrations for the legendary car, and will take place on Saturday 26 July, the second day of the Silverstone Classic extravaganza.

Examples of all five generations of classic Mustang will be on parade, as well as the all-new Mustang, which made its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March and which will next year become the first Mustang to go on sale in the UK in the model’s 50-year heritage.

“The Silverstone Classic and the Mustang Owners Club half-century celebrations are the ideal stage to introduce the new Mustang,” said Anthony Ireson, Ford Britain marketing director. “The car has been designed from the outset to appeal to its traditional fans. It has the key design elements which evoke the essential character of the classic Mustang, allied to outstanding power outputs and a sophisticated new chassis.”

The new Mustang Fastback and Convertible will offer world-class performance from engines including a new turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost delivering 310 horsepower and 320 lb/ft of torque, and a 5.0-litre V8 generating 435 horsepower with 400 lb/ft of torque.

Ford Announces Power Outputs for All-New Mustang

Ford has revealed power outputs and performance details for the all-new Ford Mustang. The all-new Ford Mustang for North America equipped with the new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine will offer 310 horsepower and 320 lb/ft of torque, while the Mustang equipped with a muscular 5.0-litre V8 engine* will generate 435 horsepower with 400 lb/ft of torque.

Both engine options will be made available to customers in the UK when the all-new Mustang goes on sale for the first time next year. The all-new Mustang also will offer fully independent front and rear suspension, and an advanced lightweight body structure with extensive high-strength steel and aluminium components for excellent ride and handling.

Ford will announce at a later date final specification and details for all-new Ford Mustang fastback and convertible models for Europe.

Ford also has announced brake and chassis performance packages will be standard for European customers. “Mustang is all about performance and the performance packs give our customers what they are looking for straight from the factory,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer.

A global motoring icon with nine million sold since first launched in 1964, Mustang is the world’s most-liked vehicle on Facebook with more than 7 million fans and has made more than 3,200 appearances in film and on TV.

Advanced engine technology

The new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine was designed specifically for the all-new Mustang, to meet the needs of drivers looking for outstanding performance and fuel efficiency.

“This EcoBoost engine delivers the healthy output Mustang drivers expect, regardless of the car’s speed,” said Scott Makowski, EcoBoost powertrain engineering manager. “It delivers where a Mustang driver expects it to – with a broad, flat torque curve and great driveability under any conditions.”

The newest member of Ford’s global EcoBoost engine family, the 2.3-litre continues to take advantage of state-of-the-art technologies including direct fuel injection, twin independent variable camshaft timing and turbocharging.

With a compact engine generating nearly 135 horsepower per litre and more than 139 lb/ft of torque per litre ensuring engine durability was critical. The Mustang EcoBoost engine will withstand the added stresses with:

•    Forged-steel crankshaft
•    Piston-cooling jets
•    Steel piston ring carriers
•    Premium bearing materials
•    Upgraded valve seat materials
•    Forged-steel connecting rods
•    High-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block with ladder-frame bearing caps
•    Deep-sump, die-cast aluminum oil pan

The 5.0-litre V8 delivers a host of features that help it breathe, especially at higher engine speeds. Getting air into the cylinders and exhaust out is key to generating more power and torque from any engine, and that has been the focus in the development of this V8, which features:

•    Larger intake valves
•    Larger exhaust valves
•    Revised intake camshafts
•    Revised exhaust camshafts
•    Stiffer valve springs
•    New cylinder head casting – revised ports provide direct path to the valves for less restrictive intake and exhaust flow; combustion chamber modifications accommodate larger valves
•    Sinter forged connecting rods are lighter and more durable
•    Redesigned piston tops – deeper pockets clear the new larger valves
•    Rebalanced forged crankshaft to support higher-rpm operation

Independent suspension and lightweight body for sharper reflexes

With fully independent suspension systems front and rear, and Ford’s integral link rear suspension technology, the all-new Ford Mustang will be more nimble and comfortable, achieving world-class performance in both dynamics and ride quality. Lightweight aluminum is used for the bonnet and front wings to help reduce body mass and improve the weight balance.

Some of the other components made of aluminum include the rear suspension knuckles, rear axle housing on automatic transmission cars, rear control arms, and rear brake callipers. Even parts made of steel and other materials such as the hollow rear stabiliser and the new seats have been intelligently designed to meet the performance standards while keeping weight down.

The base kerb weight of the U.S. specification Mustang 5.0-litre V8 fastback automatic is 1,691kg (3,729 pounds); with the 2.3-litre EcoBoost fastback automatic weighing 1,598kg (3,524 pounds).

The 2.3-litre EcoBoost fastback has 52 per cent of its weight over the front axle and 48 per cent to the rear, while the 5.0-litre V8 has 53 per cent of its mass on the front wheels.

Every new Mustang features an all-new integral-link independent rear suspension. The suspension architecture is based on a lower control arm, integral link, upper camber link and a toe link. The geometry, springs, dampers and bushings have all been specifically modified and tuned to deliver improved mechanical grip for this high-performance application.

The suspension geometry of Mustang now keeps the body level under hard acceleration and braking. Aluminum alloy rear knuckles help reduce unsprung mass for better ride and handling.

At the front, a non-isolated perimeter subframe helps stiffen the structure while reducing mass, contributing to a better foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering, and ride quality.

The double-ball-joint front MacPherson strut system enables the use of large, powerful brakes without resorting to excessive wheel offsets that would hurt steering feel. Like the rear, the front end contributes to improved pitch stability with anti-dive in the geometry to prevent the nose from squatting under braking.

Performance brakes and chassis for Mustang in Europe

Both 2.3-litre EcoBoost and 5.0-litre V8 models will feature performance brake packages as standard in Europe that include:

•    Mustang 2.3-litre EcoBoost: four-piston, 46-millimetre fixed callipers, 352-millimetre discs, front; single-piston, 45-millimetre callipers, 330-millimetre discs, rear
•    Mustang 5.0-litre V8: six-piston, 36-millimetre Brembo callipers, 380-millimetre discs, front; single-piston, 45-millimetre callipers, 330-millimetre discs, rear

All-new Mustang 2.3-litre and 5.0-litre models for Europe also feature as standard a performance pack including:

•    Retuned springs, bushings and monotube rear dampers
•    Additional cooling capability for track-day durability
•    K-brace connecting strut towers to bulkhead
•    Thicker rear sway bar
•    Unique tuning for ABS, electronic stability control and electric power-assisted steering

New Technology Delivers Quieter, Smarter Motorised Integral Blinds For Bi-Fold Doors

Now with the quietest ever motor and plug-in diagnostics to speedily resolve any operational issues with ease, the MB-System motorised Uni-Blind® system from Morley Glass offers fabricators and installers the ultimate addition to any window or door.

The MB-System Uni-Blind now features a brushless motor which means the blind operation is much quieter than previous generations, with reliability far superior to previous versions. The motor has been put through its paces at the internationally renowned IFT Rosenheim institute in Germany, surpassing in excess of 60,000 cycles without any reliability issues.

The new motors can also be set to operate at a specific speed – this means a customer with a set of bi-folding doors, for example, will experience consistency across the opening span as the blinds will raise and lower in perfect synchronicity.

Morley Glass MD Ian Short said:
“We’re continuously looking at ways to enhance our product range, and the new brushless motor for our MB-System is a great example of how improvements in technology deliver genuine benefits for installers and homeowners. It’s vital that installers have the confidence in the Uni-Blind’s reliability and the certainty of knowing that their integral blinds will perform as expected – equally important though is assurance that resolving any issues is as hassle-free as possible.”

This latest innovation adds a further benefit to the MB-System which already has the advantage of being supplied with a pre-wired control box for easy installation – this means only a single wire from the blinds to the box needs wiring, avoiding any complicated electrical installation.

The Uni-Blind M-System is available in the whole range of Venetian colours as well as the pleated range of colours, with a 14mm pleated blind encapsulated within a 20, 22 or 27 mm cavity.

Lead times for the MB-System are also far superior compared to other blind systems, with delivery in just 15 working days from any Friday.

To find out more about the MB-System Uni-Blind and the rest of the range visit www.uniblind.co.uk

Gate safety campaigners welcome HSE safety advice following gate accident

As Gate Safety Week approaches, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has renewed its call for suppliers and installers of powered gates to follow vital safety guidance.

The HSE made the comment after a company pleaded guilty to breaching safety regulations at a court case in Dudley. The court heard how an eight-year-old boy was injured when his head became trapped by an entrance gate at a primary school.

HSE inspector Sarah Palfreyman said:
“People getting trapped is a well-known risk in the industry and HSE has produced safety notes on the subject due to a number of fatalities involving children in recent years. I would encourage all suppliers and installers of electric gates to read the notes.”

Gate Safety Week (October 13 - 19 www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk) has been organised by the UK powered gate industry to raise awareness of the dangers posed by automated gates that do not meet current safety legislation.

The Door & Hardware Federation Powered Gate Group and a number of influential organisations in the safety, enforcement, inspection, education and security sectors are behind Gate Safety Week. In the weeks running up to the event, DHF Powered Gate Group members and supporters will be campaigning hard to alert the public of the risks associated with unsafe automated gates and giving vital guidance on safe installation.

Said DHF Powered Gate Group chairman Neil Sampson:
“Gate Safety Week is all about making as many people as possible aware of the dangers posed by a poorly installed or maintained powered gate. As an industry we are determined to minimise the risk of further tragic accidents happening.

“More than two thirds of all automated gates installed in the UK do not comply with current legislation and could pose a serious safety risk. Equally worrying is the fact that unsafe installations are still being carried out by unqualified installers and gate companies who are quite willing to take dangerous short cuts in installation.

“So our message in the run up to Gate Safety Week is clear - have existing powered gates checked to ensure they conform with current safety legislation, and insist that new gates are installed and maintained by qualified and trained installers and engineers.”

Visit www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk to find out more about gate safety and how to pledge support for the campaign.

Background information on the court case and some key facts on Gate Safety Week and powered gate safety can be found below:

About the court case:

On July 10, Dudley Magistrates’ Court heard how an eight-year-old boy was injured when his head became trapped between the edge of a closing gate and the gate post at Pedmore Primary School.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after the accident, which happened in September 2012, found the entrance gate had been automated by Access Control Solutions (UK) Ltd but the company had failed to fit suitable guarding.

Access Control Solutions (UK) Ltd, of Boston Road, Leicester, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 18 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and was fined £3,300 with £773 costs.

HSE guidance on the installation of electrically powered gates and the risks to pedestrians highlighted following the court case is available at www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/electricgates2.htm .

Key facts about Gate Safety Week and powered gate safety:

• Gate Safety Week has been organised by the DHF Powered Gate Group which comprises the UK’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment.

• Seminars, workshops and other gate safety-related activities will take place at Fencex, the fencing industry exhibition being held at Stoneleigh Exhibition Park, near Coventry, on Wednesday, October 15 as the centrepiece of Gate Safety Week.

• More than two thirds of all automated gates installed in the UK do not comply with the law and could pose a serious risk.

• The DHF Powered Gate Group runs stringent two-day gate safety training courses which more than 120 automated gate installers have successfully completed. By the end of this year the number of installers to have successfully completed the powered gate safety diploma course will have doubled to 240.

• The DHF Guide to Powered Gate Safety, which has been endorsed by the HSE, can be downloaded from www.dhfonline.org.uk .

• Every DHF Powered Gate Group member called to maintain an automated gate carries out a risk assessment before work starts. If the gate poses a danger, and the person responsible for the gate refuses to have remedial work undertaken, the engineer will switch off the system, issue a warning letter to the gate owner and affix a “danger” notice to the gate.
