The DHF Powered Gate Group was set up with the encouragement of the Health & Safety Executive following fatal accidents involving unsafe gates. In recent years, three children and three adults have been killed in gate accidents. More than two thirds of all automated gates in the UK fail to meet current safety standards and could be potentially unsafe.
At a court case earlier this year, two gate companies were heavily fined for health and safety breaches that resulted in the death of a child. After the sentence, the Health & Safety Executive called on those responsible for managing properties with automatic gates to ensure they are properly maintained by competent personnel.
Said Nigel Lea, national partnerships manager at Citation:
“Health & safety should always be of paramount importance and the ability to install equipment safely and correctly should be top priority. Citation strives to ensure our clients meet all obligations under health & safety law. Through our partnership with the DHF we support initiatives such as this which can only be of benefit.”
The Gate Safety Week campaign is raising awareness of the dangers that powered gates pose and advising that existing powered gates should be checked for safety and legal compliance. It is also stressing that properly installed and maintained gates are perfectly safe to use. There is comprehensive guidance for health & safety professionals, other professionals and the general public on the website www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk. This includes a guide to safety legislation and a detailed run down of the safety features to look for on a powered gate.
