Leading health & safety organisation joins powered gate safety campaign

Citation is the latest professional organisation to join a vital national safety campaign. Campaigners have declared a week of action in October in a bid to dramatically improve the safety of automated gates in the UK.
Citation is the leading provider of health & safety and employment law and human resources services. It is the latest in a number of influential groups in the education, enforcement, inspection, security and safety sectors who are lending their support to Gate Safety Week October 13th - 19th .
It is being organised by the Powered Gate Group of the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) which comprises Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment.

The DHF Powered Gate Group was set up with the encouragement of the Health & Safety Executive following fatal accidents involving unsafe gates. In recent years, three children and three adults have been killed in gate accidents. More than two thirds of all automated gates in the UK fail to meet current safety standards and could be potentially unsafe.

At a court case earlier this year, two gate companies were heavily fined for health and safety breaches that resulted in the death of a child. After the sentence, the Health & Safety Executive called on those responsible for managing properties with automatic gates to ensure they are properly maintained by competent personnel.

Said Nigel Lea, national partnerships manager at Citation:
“Health & safety should always be of paramount importance and the ability to install equipment safely and correctly should be top priority. Citation strives to ensure our clients meet all obligations under health & safety law. Through our partnership with the DHF we support initiatives such as this which can only be of benefit.”

The Gate Safety Week campaign is raising awareness of the dangers that powered gates pose and advising that existing powered gates should be checked for safety and legal compliance. It is also stressing that properly installed and maintained gates are perfectly safe to use. There is comprehensive guidance for health & safety professionals, other professionals and the general public on the website This includes a guide to safety legislation and a detailed run down of the safety features to look for on a powered gate.

Background Information:
The DHF Powered Gate Group is a collective of the UK's premier gate installation companies and the major automation equipment suppliers who work together to provide state of the art technology in safe and reliable installations.
The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) represents all the key players in the following sectors: powered gates, industrial/commercial doors, garage doors, metal & timber doorsets and locks & architectural hardware. With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service.
