Early Mercedes from an Isolated Sheep Station in Queensland, Australia goes to Auction

Bonhams Bond Street Sale continues to showcase fantastic diversity of motoring, with the latest offering an elegant 1909 Mercedes which spent its early years as a station manager’s car on remote Australian sheep farm, Isis Downs.

Perhaps the last place one would expect to find an early Mercedes vehicle advertised as “the car of kings” is at an isolated sheep station in Queensland, Australia. However that is where this 5.3-litre shaft-drive motor car lived for many of the early years of its life, serving as the Station Manager’s car from 1914 and remaining on the property until the early 1930s. At over a century old, the Mercedes Simplex Roi-Des-Belges Tourer is offered at an estimate £380,000-540,000.

When constantly exposed to the harsh conditions of the Australian outback, early cars suffered from numerous mechanical difficulties. The rough terrain would soon emphasise any weakness in a vehicle, therefore those brands whose cars were built with the quality to withstand the rigours of rural life, like Mercedes and Rolls-Royce, subsequently became favoured by wealthy landowners.

This 35hp Mercedes proved a wise choice and a hardy asset to those running Isis Downs, the owners keeping it in their possession for nearly twenty years. It was purchased by a neighbouring farmer in the 1930s and remained there until the 1960s, when it was rescued and restored. Despite being more than a century old, the car has had only five owners since new.

James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director, said:
“This Mercedes has a tremendous history, having started its life driving across Australia's wildest outback over 100 years ago. Still in working order it retains its original features, and has the honour of being quite possibly the world’s oldest shaft-driven 35 hp Mercedes. A wonderful entrant for Bonhams Bond Street Sale."

Bonhams Bond Street Sale takes place at Bonhams London headquarters today, the 30th November 2014.

Feel The Difference! - Three New Textures From Garador

Garador has taken garage door design a step further by introducing three new textures for its steel sectional doors.

Its traditional silkgrain has been relaunched with an ultra smooth surface thanks to the latest in material and paint technology, plus a brand new sandgrain textured finish and timber effect finishes have also been introduced.

The sandgrain offers a slightly coarser surface while the steel timber effect texture gives a genuine soft wooden surface feel.

All three designs offer great new looks as well as a very different feel.
“These new textures have been introduced into our ever popular steel Georgian, Linear Medium and Linear Large sectional doors and offer a fresh exciting alternative,” said Garador’s managing director Simon Hipgrave. “Some doors and colours lend themselves to certain finishes more than others, we’ve found that shades such as Terra Brown, Anthracite Grey and White Aluminium show the sandgrain texture exceptionally well.”
Garador’s sectional doors are already recognised as the best engineered garage doors on the market and are ideal for short driveways where there is limited space in front of the garage. They offer exceptionally smooth operation, whether manual or by remote; and the new range of textures can only increase their popularity in the UK.

Full details of all the new developments at Garador can be found on the company’s website at www.garador.co.uk or call 01935 443701.

Aluprof Making an Entrance

Offering some of the highest insulation levels achievable in commercial aluminium doors and windows, Aluprof have recently supplied systems for the new Premier Inn in Salford Central, Manchester.

Designed by RHWL Architects, the recently completed 143 bedroom, £12.5 million Premier Inn development is located on a half acre site at the corner of Irwell Street and Stanley Street. The development includes a bar and restaurant which capitalises on its south facing riverside location. The new hotel and restaurant, are located within the new ‘Chapel Street’ development and will support the nearby recently completed Grade A office and commercial properties at the ‘New Bailey’ development. Both developments make up the £650 million ‘Salford Central’ scheme.

Salford Central, which is made up the two inter-dependent, but distinct areas, will create around 11,000 new jobs and will provide 220,000 square metres of commercial space, 849 new homes and in total provide 390 hotel rooms.

Entrance doors on commercial schemes such as the Premier Inn, Salford Central, are in use constantly, 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year. Both the door system used and the operating gear has to be capable of withstanding such traffic, including to some extent an amount of abuse due to poorly handled luggage. The sliding door system chosen for the installation on the project comes from the Aluprof portfolio of commercial systems. The MB-DPA system which is a dedicated range of aluminium profiles specifically designed for use in heavy duty commercial sliding door sets.

As the project had to achieve both high levels of insulation as well as high levels of sound attenuation, as it is located on a busy route into the city of Manchester, specialist DG units were specified on the project which included 14.4 mm sound control laminated glass made up into double and triple glazed units. The MB-DPA system is capable of carrying units up to 37 mm in width and is optionally thermally broken using polyamide strips.

Other ground floor swing doors on the project were constructed using Aluprof’s MB 86 ST system, which is a high thermal performance rebated window/door system which meets the high specification required on the project. These doors are a mix of ground floor panelled access doors and glazed fire escape doors. All door systems were powder coated to RAL 9010 matt.

Sound attenuation was further enhanced in the bedrooms where triple glazing was required using 8.4 mm sound control laminated glass in a unit which was almost 50 mm in thickness. Aluprof’s MB TT50 was chosen for this application as it also offers a high level of frame insulation to complement the high acoustic and insulation performance of the DG unit. All windows were dual colour with matching RAL 9010 matt outside with RAL 7022 matt internally. The corner detailed curtain wall areas were made from Aluprof’s MB SR50N HI+ utilising a 39mm thickness, sound control laminated, glass DG units and finished in a single colour construction in RAL 9010 matt.

The MB-TT50 and MB-SR50N HI+ systems are designed for constructing large glazed walls in hotels or public buildings such as banks, office towers, administration buildings or sports halls. Systems can also be used for building curtain walls, ceilings and other spatial structures. They allow the creation of large glazing in buildings while ensuring excellent insulation, which has been recognised by the PHI Institute in Darmstadt. Consequently, these products may be used in the construction of passive buildings. At the moment, only three curtain wall systems are certified A + by the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt, and this includes the two above-mentioned Aluprof systems.

The installation was completed by Leicester based, Norman & Underwood, Director Ross Hedley, takes up the story:
“The project was a challenging one, as during the design stages we had to demonstrate that we could achieve the high levels insulation and acoustic performance. The broad range of Aluprof systems allowed us to achieve the specification.”
A wide range of door systems are available from Aluprof, these include commercial and residential doors systems, swing, sliding, sliding folding as well as roller shutter garage doors. Aluprof also specialise in fire rated door systems and screens with are approved under the ‘Certifire’ scheme. Aluminium doors and screens can be designed to achieve up to EI120 ratings. With a complete range of systems Aluprof also offer a bespoke design service where profiles can be designed to achieve the most demanding of applications.

With their UK base in Altrincham, Aluprof systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies across the UK. Details on the companies bespoke solutions can be found on the Project Specific and Bespoke Solutions brochure

Demand for Tradesmen Increases as The Nation Falls Out of Love with DIY

Business is looking up for the UK’s tradespeople as Britons increasingly down tools and turn to the professionals to carry out work on their home improvement projects, research has revealed.

As recent reports claim hectic lifestyles and lack of basic DIY skills are to blame for homeowners’ general lack of enthusiasm for DIY, tradesmen are simultaneously reporting a rise in work. This is the finding of a major study by IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s biggest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade.

The in-depth research, which was a study of over 10,000 people working across a range of trades, revealed that business is on the up for most UK trade professionals. 93 per cent said business is positive, with 16 per cent of these claiming business is ‘booming’. Only 7 per cent of tradespeople said that they are struggling at the moment.

The increase in work is said to be linked to homeowners preferring to get a professional in for maintenance jobs around the house, rather than doing it themselves.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said: “While it’s a shame that the nation has fallen out of love with DIY, it’s positive news for the industry as tradesmen are reporting an increase in work.

“Hiring a professionally qualified tradesman can be extremely beneficial as not only are they guaranteed to do the job properly, they can ultimately save homeowners’ time and money in the long run.”

Yale Makes a Buzz at Beehive Joinery

Beehive Joinery has installed Yale Door and Window Solution’s innovative Parallel Plus hinges at a luxury private property where aesthetic appeal was key, but safety and sustainability principles could not be compromised.

Dorset based manufacturer of doors, windows and staircases, Beehive Joinery is a family-run business with over 10 years’ experience supplying to trade and private customers all over the South West.

Working on a high specification private home in Wiltshire, built by Stour Homes, Beehive Joinery required a high security window hinge system that would not impact on the overall aesthetics.

Matt Guppy, Partner at Beehive Joinery, commented:
“The owners of this home had a clear vision for the design and didn’t want their windows to disrupt or impact on the visual appeal of the property’s oak structure. Yale’s Parallel Plus hinges enabled us to achieve this by offering a practical solution that provides clear sightlines with a seamless, stylish finish.

“Safety is obviously a key consideration with a property like this where the windows extend full-length, right from floor to ceiling. The restrictors on the Parellel Plus hinges give a secure stop to ensure the occupants’ safety, whilst still providing the necessary ventilation.

“On the ground floor there is a pathway running around the house which isn’t imposed upon by the windows, but may have been should another hinge have been chosen. Also, the restrictors on the hinges on the upper floor mean that there is no worry when young family members are playing upstairs.”

A total of ten windows in the new-build property have been fitted with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) tested hinges that deliver balanced airflow, without compromising the look of the building in any way.

Matt added:
“This was our first project using Yale Parallel Plus hinges and both ourselves, and the client, were so impressed that we have since gone on to use the product in two subsequent installations, and we predict there will be many more to come.”

Richard Bromley, Business Development Director at Yale Doors and Windows Solutions, said:
“Yale Door and Window Solutions’ Parallel Plus hinge system has been designed for applications where aesthetics and security are integral. Additionally, the system provides a naturally ventilated sustainable solution the for the benefit of the family living in this beautiful home.”
Yale’s Parallel Plus systems can be can be installed for either manual or motorised operation to accommodate bespoke window design. The hinges can be restricted to 40mm openings and still provide whole perimeter ventilation and effective air exchange.

The Parallel Plus hinge is manufactured from high grade 304 austenitic stainless steel. This specifically selected high-grade material provides increased strength and guaranteed long-term resistance to corrosion, backed by a 12-year guarantee.

For more information on the Parallel Plus hinge system, or the complete Yale Door and Window Solutions product portfolio, please visit www.yaledoorandwindowsolutions.co.uk .

New Mustang Unveiled on World’s Tallest Building, Burj Khalifa

Ford Motor Company underscored its growing ambitions in the Middle East and Africa, with the dramatic introduction of the all-new Mustang on Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford capped the live-action event by delivering the iconic pony badge to the 2015 yellow Mustang on the 112th floor of the skyscraper. The event was viewed live around the world on YouTube as well as by approximately 10,000 fans gathered in the Dubai Downtown area, overlooking the Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa - to see a replay, click on this link.

“Today we planted the Ford flag in the Middle East & Africa, an exciting, vibrant region that represents the final frontier for growth in the auto industry,” Bill Ford said. “We also sent a message to the world that Mustang is going global after 50 years as America’s greatest motoring icon.”

Ford established its new Middle East & Africa business unit this year, which covers the company’s automotive business in 67 Ford markets in North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa and Middle East regions. Industry sales in Middle East & Africa are expected to grow 40 percent to 5.5 million vehicles by 2020. To meet new customer demand, Ford pledged to launch 25 vehicles in region by 2016, including the all-new Mustang debuting next year.

Viewers of the light-hearted action spectacle witnessed a dramatic journey that started with a hero atop a cliff in Arizona taking an urgent call. The unknown protagonist raced via horseback, airliner, car, helicopter and jet ski to Dubai to deliver the iconic pony badge. Only in the final scene on the 112th floor of the Burj Khalifa – 399 metres (1,300 feet) above the ground – was the protagonist revealed with a wink and a nod as Bill Ford, the great-grandson of Henry Ford.
“A century ago Henry Ford had a vision to open the highways to all mankind,” said Jim Benintende, president, Ford Middle East and Africa. “Placing our regional headquarters in Dubai lets us tap the innovation and imagination that’s flourishing here, helping us to bring our founder’s vision to this part of the world.”
In addition to the new Mustang, Ford also previously announced a plan to introduce new vehicles such as the Ford Focus, Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKC in the Middle East and Africa. The company also announced the accelerated rollout of many new technologies to the region, including EcoBoost engines, SYNC in-car connectivity, inflatable rear seat belts, MyKey and other driver assist technologies.

For the first time in its 50-year history the Ford Mustang will be available in a factory-built right-hand-drive configuration in the UK with deliveries from autumn next year.

BWF calls for decisive action by Chancellor

Joinery manufacturing and woodworking firms across the UK are calling on the Chancellor to do more to meet the housing shortfall, to recognise the value of apprenticeships and to reform business rates to avoid penalising manufacturers.

In the British Woodworking Federation’s (BWF) latest submission to the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne in advance of the Autumn Statement on 3 December, the BWF chief executive Iain McIlwee has outlined the industry’s requests, born from concerns that the economic recovery may yet fizzle out for more than 5,000 firms operating at the heart of the UK’s construction sector.

The BWF’s letter focuses on a number of objectives such as encouraging investment, tackling the skills gap, delivering the UK from housing crisis and reducing the squeeze on businesses. The BWF has also expressed its recommendations to shadow construction minister Iain Wright MP and business secretary Vince Cable MP.

Iain McIlwee said:
“Our latest State of Trade survey indicates that joinery workshops are becoming busier. Two thirds of our survey respondents report they saw an increase in sales in the summer, and more than half said they are operating at over 80% capacity for the first time since the end of 2012. This is welcome news, but economic concerns remain, material costs are high, and margins are thin.

“This year’s Autumn Statement should be about much more than popularity, pints and petrol. Our members are rebuilding in uncertain times and we need policies that encourage much needed investment in plant, machinery and a skilled workforce.”
The housing market remains central to the fortunes of the UK joinery industry, explained Iain McIlwee:
“The BWF has been at meetings with MPs and policy makers from all parties, including the communities minister Stephen Williams and shadow housing minister Emma Reynolds. What has become really clear from these meetings is that building more homes is a critical part of all election strategies. Increases of a third are being mentioned and even the prospect of doubling the current build rate is beginning to be touted.

“But given that we’re still unlikely to get much beyond 150,000 new home starts this year, these proposed levels of housebuilding are a tall order without fundamental change. Housing is key to our industry’s growth, so we want to see a renewed focus on incentives for custom and self-build, as well as action to release sites from local authorities and greater investment from affordable housing providers to help meet the likely shortfall.

“We also want action taken to acknowledge the importance of timber products of all types within the Government’s environmental targets for homes. Otherwise, low embodied carbon, a fundamental strength of timber and a crucial asset when addressing the amount of energy spent making new buildings, is at risk of being overlooked. What is critical is that we don't just build houses, but high quality, sustainable homes. This is where joinery firms come in. With impeccable green credentials and significant opportunities for driving efficiencies – both on and off site – their products have a huge role to play.”

Additional points made in the BWF’s submission include:

  • The BWF applauds efforts from both the Construction Leadership Council and Government in highlighting deep rooted payment issues through initiatives such as the Construction Supply Chain Payment Charter and its 11 ‘fair payment commitments’, but is calling on more companies to sign up to and meet the Charter payment commitments or sanctions must be applied.

  • To improve confidence, R&D Tax Credits should be extended to £500,000 until the end of 2015 with fuel duties cut with immediate effect.

  • Government must look at ways of removing manufacturing plant and machinery from business rate assessments to encourage investment.

  • A belt and braces review of the Green Deal is desperately needed and should encourage new activity in the home improvement, repair and maintenance market.

  • The Allowable Solutions framework should be used to help cut carbon emissions by addressing the 30-50% of a building’s lifetime emissions that are accounted for even before the building is occupied.

The BWF has also raised concerns that recent proposals on apprenticeships could drive up costs and increase the bureaucratic burden on many SMEs in the industry. Iain McIlwee said:
“The chairman of the Woodworking Industry Training (WIT) Forum, the training arm of the BWF, recently addressed the Apprenticeship Commission. Our sector has a proud heritage of being apprentice-led, and we boast the highest ratio of apprentices in the specialist construction sector. In recent months there has been significant work undertaken to evolve the architectural joinery qualification and to reintroduce a woodworking apprenticeship.

“However, the changes derived from the Richards Review, together with recent announcements from Vince Cable on intentions to hike up the national minimum wage for apprentices, are likely to be counterproductive. We want the Chancellor to look again at the options available so that this industry can hire more apprentices, not fewer.”

Belfox Releases 2015 Price List

Belfox, the specialist gate drive component manufacturer, has announced the release of its new price list for 2015.

Although the company is new to the UK market, Belfox is the leading manufacturer of gate components for external use in Germany and is a major force across the continent, supplying well-known names across Germany, France and Holland.

This success has been built on the back of high product quality and also a bespoke partnership approach, whereby gate manufacturers are encouraged to say exactly what they need, with Belfox then adapting its products as required. All products are supplied ready to use - even down to the buying company’s name being inscribed on the metalwork - and are fully height adjustable, ensuring significant savings in terms of time and money. Belfox uses high-quality aluminium profiles and stainless steel shafts, meaning solid performance is matched by great looks, and can handle retro fitting as well as new manufacture.

The company recently launched onto the UK market, using the Fencex 2014 conference in October as a showcase for its product portfolio. A constant stream of people visited the Belfox stand, with gate manufacturers eager to find out more about this innovative gate drive technology. The portals with height adjustable drives and easy to use emergency releases were particularly well received.

Belfox UK MD Danesch Missaghian said:
“We had a very positive experience at Fencex 2014. However, you never know how successful these events will be until you get there, but we were taken aback by the high level of interest in our products. With our 2015 price list now in circulation we are looking forward to building on this positive experience and developing strong and long lasting business relationships with customers across the UK.”

A New Build Project Expands its Horizons with AluK Systems

Whether building an extension, renovating an existing home or embarking on a new build, the installation of windows and doors plays a crucial role not only from the design point of view, but also in terms of safety and performance.

At Mountclaire Court project in Northampton the local fabricator CWG Choices Ltd took full advantage of AluK’s aluminium window and door systems to meet the homeowners’ requirements for aesthetic and practical appeal.

The clients were looking for a solution that would allow them to expand their living space and maximise the amount of natural light in the house.

Providing wide expanses of glazing, AluK’s BSF70 Bi-fold Door System makes use of the property’s large floating corner to create a beautiful open plan area that can be easily integrated with the garden whenever required.

This trend is continued with the BSC94 4 Pane Sliding Door System, 58BW TBT Tilt and Turn Bay Window System, and the 58BW ST Slimline Casement Window System which was specified for its slim sightlines, increasing the flow on natural light and enhancing the feeling of space.

It is estimated that approximately 20% of energy lost from a building is through its windows and doors. Installing thermally efficient window and door systems such as AluK 58BW ST or BSC94 means a more comfortable home where heat loss during winter months is reduced, lowering the homeowners’ energy bills and carbon footprint.

In addition, inherently strong and long-lasting, aluminium stands up to the challenges of everyday life, providing homeowners with a long-term solution that will keep their home safe.

AluK systems are certified under the 'Secured by Design’ scheme operated by the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Jason Wilder, Director, CWG Choices Ltd, comments:
“AluK aluminium window and door systems cater for variety of looks and styles; in this particular project our clients were looking for a modern and contemporary design with metallic finish which we delivered thanks to the range of colour options available. Combined with the outstanding thermal, acoustic and security performance of AluK systems, we were able to complete the build to the highest standards.”
