How E-Type UK Transforms British Icon to modern standards while retaining Heritage

One of the most iconic and beautiful cars of all time, the Jaguar E-Type is a hugely desirable model for classic vehicle enthusiasts and lovers of the British automotive industry.

However, with the first cars being created over half a century ago in 1961, some aren’t the perfect proposition for modern, everyday driving; this is where E-Type UK comes in.

E-Type UK is one of the world’s leading authorities for all things Jaguar E-Type – from restoring and servicing all the way through to selling – and it offers the finest upgrades to bring the legendary Jaguar into the 21st century.

The Kent-based business is renowned for pioneering the E-Type fuel injection system and has been at the forefront of development to bring products to market. It has built considerable knowledge and expertise in both V12 and XK systems and offers both to provide the ultimate driving experience.

Using original Jaguar XJS throttle bodies and manifolds on the V12 and newly designed set-ups on the XK, the systems are fitted to the highest standards with consideration applied to the most intricate of details.

A modern ECU is integrated into the car’s wiring using a bespoke loom; ensuring the unmistakable character of the original V12 and XK E-Types are retained. Not only do E-Type UK’s fuel injection systems provide increased power, they also offer hugely improved drivability, throttle response and reliability.

E-Type UK’s five-speed gearbox upgrade is another that has proved very popular with the company’s passionate clientele, providing that all-important fifth gear and adding more positivity to the gear change.

Built from cast aerospace-grade aluminium, the gearbox fits exactly the same as the original four-speed set-up and uses the existing bell housing, prop shaft, speedo, speedo cable and angle drive.

The engine and original gearbox are removed during the process, and E-Type UK’s talented team inspects all associated parts – including the clutch, master and slave cylinders, bearings and engine hoses – to ensure vehicles are completed to the highest possible standards.

Fuel injection systems and the five-speed gearbox are just two of the upgrade options that E-Type UK offers, with the expert team also able to make braking, suspension, exhaust, cooling, ignition, air filter and alternator upgrades as well as bespoke customisations to cars for clients.

Marcus Holland, Owner/Managing Director of E-Type UK, said:
“At E-Type UK, we pride ourselves on offering the very best service around and providing enthusiasts with the ultimate E-Type driving experience, no matter what they’re looking for. Our incredible team is second to none when it comes to E-Type upgrades and they are known in the E-Type community for delivering the perfect solution for modern driving. Customers come to us wanting their E-Type to improve in a certain area, and our team can always deliver the goods.”

Abloy UK Relaunches Foundations Plus Course

Security expert Abloy UK has relaunched its popular Abloy Foundations Plus course, which covers minimum performance standards, Dynamic Lockdown and the Constructions Product Regulations.

The Foundations course covers the majority of standards applicable to doorsets - from hinges to door selectors - and helps delegates to understand the needs of a door, from its location within the building to the purpose the door must fulfil.

The Foundations Plus course is an advanced add-on to the Foundations course, going one step further in educating delegates on industry terminology. This provides attendees with the knowledge to specify products that are suitable for both the application and door type.

The course covers the locking and escape requirements for access control electric locking in both retrofit and new build applications, ensuring a safe and secure solution. Enrolment on the Foundations Plus course is subject to having successfully completed the Foundations course.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, said:
“The first relaunched Foundations Plus course was successfully hosted at ASSA ABLOY UK headquarters on Friday 23rd February 2018, with a full house of customers and specifiers.
“The course utilises the theory and knowledge gained from the Foundations course to ensure the correct specification of compliant electric locking solutions for access control doors. It provides an excellent link from the Foundations course to Abloy’s more advanced training modules such as Electric Locking.
“Foundations and Foundations Plus can both be used to gain valuable CPD points, so we encourage anyone involved in the specification of doors and access control solutions – whether you’re an installer, security manager, lock centre, end-user or specifier - to get involved.”
Abloy Foundations Plus Course 2018 Dates as follows:

Friday 25th May
Friday 27th July
Friday 19th October

For further information on products and services available from Abloy UK or to book a place on one of the courses, visit www.abloy.co.uk/academy, call 01902 364 500, or email academy@abloy.co.uk.

In with the Old Hill Ironworks: A Perry launches market leading black antique ironmongery range

Reinforcing its long established West Midlands roots, A Perry & Co (Hinges) Ltd, a leading independent, family-owned British manufacturer and supplier, is introducing Old Hill Ironworks, a high-quality door furniture range which specialises in black antique ironmongery originating from the heart of the Black Country.

The products are designed to appeal to consumers through their premium components, superior finish, 12-year mechanical guarantee plus pricing which potentially delivers higher profit margins for distributors and stockists.

Endorsing the company’s commitment to excellent standards, Old Hill Ironworks has been salt spray tested for a market leading 700 hours to guarantee its extended reliability.

Staying true to A Perry’s traditions of quality manufacturing, Old Hill Ironworks is created using high-quality malleable steel which makes it more flexible and less brittle and likely to break. With a protective inner coating and a strong, robust UV colour fast 'first use' outer coating, the range offers a superior industry leading finish.

The high-quality innovative products are the result of precision engineering and are designed to bring an elegance and style to every doorway, satisfying the market’s strictest requirements. The collection includes lever handles; mortice knobs; pull handles; gate furniture; front door fittings; window fittings; cabinet hardware; tee hinges and hinge fronts.

Ian Dunnaker, company director, says:
"The name of the range is a tribute to the early days of the company, which started over four generations ago at the ironworks in Old Hill. The style and elegance of the Old Hill Ironworks range lies in the attention to detail we have taken in designing this durable range which will stand the test of time.
"The malleable cast iron we chose to work with has the best shock resistance and is ductile, making it the ideal material to work with. In addition, the product’s stainless-steel mechanism allows for a softer and more progressive lever operation. We are confident that our offering will enable distributors to benefit from increased sales and higher profit margins."

A trade only supplier, A Perry & Co is challenging industry standards by investing in and creating professional merchandising and POS options to complement the door furniture range.

These include merchandiser stands, display boards, handle plinths, posters featuring lifestyle imagery and entrance decals, all designed to help the distributor gain sales. Perry is also offering great dealer incentives, with distributors encouraged to contact Perry to see what great offers they can benefit from.

Endorsing Perry’s ‘green’ commitment, the range has new eye-catching, retail and user-friendly packaging, which is recyclable and reusable. Underlining the company’s commitment to its distributors, Perry will also supply the leads generated from advertising and PR and will offer technical support to retailers and their customers, assisting, if required, to gain large complex contracts and orders.

Is a Roller Door Hood Cover Necessary?

When homeowners are looking to buy a garage door and they are making the decision of which door to purchase and from which manufacturer, they often look at what the door features.

Is it electrically operated or manual? Is it insulated or uninsulated? Does it come with a hood cover or without one?

Which is why one of the UK’s top roller garage door manufacturers, Garador, have produced an article exploring the practical concerns and benefits of buying a roller garage door with and without a roller door hood cover.

In their article they explore the benefits of and drawbacks of the hood cover and the various safety reasons for including a full box cover on GaraRoll roller garage doors. They also examine practical considerations, such as keeping the door curtain clear and running smoothly.

Find out more about Garador’s GaraRoll roller garage door range by visiting www.garador.co.uk

Astra Closers Tower Over London Docklands

Hundreds of Astra 3000 Series concealed door closers on apartment entrance doors are making a safe, reliable and efficient contribution to the chic interior design scheme in one of Docklands landmark buildings, Arena Tower.

Since they are concealed in the door’s hinge edge, they are totally unobtrusive yet comply with all building and fire regulations.

The Astra door closers were chosen by the architectural ironmonger John Planck Ltd to suit the sleek, modern interiors of the apartments. They form part of an ironmongery package for over 3,300 individual door sets that featured a specially designed lever handle and matching accessories for all the apartments and common areas.

John Planck’s ironmongers worked closely with developers Galliard Homes to create a scheme that is not only visually stunning but complies with all fire, accessibility and security regulations.

Arena Tower, a development by Galliard Homes is a landmark with a twist since the apartment levels rotate slightly around the building to create the Tower’s distinctive flowing twist. It rises 450ft above Canary Wharf and includes over 370 apartments as well as a cinema, swimming pool, gym, leisure facilities, plus an array of bars and restaurants spread over 3 floors.

Modern sleek aesthetics were a top priority for architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill whose watchwords for the development were space and luxury. This made concealed closers the obvious choice since they are not visible when the door is closed, avoiding the somewhat institutional and ungainly appearance of overhead closers.

John Planck selected the Astra 3000 series closers because they had worked very successfully with Astra before and, with full adjustability, they were powerful enough to handle the doors’ weight and width.

The developer’s brief to John Planck included a strong requirement for fire safety and so Astra’s 3000 Series fully controlled and adjustable were the obvious choice. They are often specified when clean, minimal design is required without compromising on performance - even on ½- hour and 1-hour fire doors.

Unlike other jamb-mounted concealed closers on the market, the Astra 3000 series is fully controlled and adjustable, making it a viable alternative to overhead products. This adjustability helps specifiers to achieve doors which comply with the Equality Act 2010, Building Regs and PAS 24 for entrance doors and the RRO for fire doors.

The Size 3 version (3003) is approved to EN1154 (when the power latching action is set to maximum) and CE marked. Fire tests in accordance with BSEN 1634-1:2000 and BSEN 1634-1:1999 have also been carried out making the closers suitable for fire doors.

The 3000 series of concealed door closers from Astra is manufactured in the UK, in four different power sizes with adjustable closing speed and latching action for different size and weights of doors. A unique hydraulic piston assembly, designed by Astra, offers an adjustable, controlled rate of door closure together with an adjustable ‘snap action’ for overcoming the latch.

Door-Stop Launch Potentially Life-Saving Side Panels

The UK’s favourite composite door manufacturer, door-stop International, is delighted to announce the launch of its new glazed fire door side panels.

Third party audited by CERTIFIRE, the side panels are available in nine frame colours and three glass styles, providing the perfect partner to a door-stop fire door.

The new addition has been designed to complement the fire door range, which was successfully launched in 2015, giving specifiers even more options to meet fire safety requirements without compromising on aesthetics. The side panels have been fully tested to FD30 standards and come with a seven-day delivery turnaround.

Patrick Dean, Head of Sales and Marketing at door-stop, said:
“Our side panels adhere to all of the same regulations as the fire door range. Rather than relying on global assessments, we have taken the steps to physically burn all side panel combinations as a complete doorset, in order to test their spread of fire capabilities.
“Fire door and side panels not only save lives, but they can also look good too. In fact, our new fire door side panels can be selected with frosted glass, which has a more modern and expensive feel than the usual offering of clear or wired aesthetics. What’s more, the doors are available in all of our contemporary colours, including Chartwell Green and Anthracite Grey.”

Door-stop prides itself on providing genuine door-stop doors, which are branded with its mark of quality. There are many benefits to owning a genuine door-stop door: they are weather-proof, police approved, energy efficient and come with a secure guarantee – and what’s more, they also come with a unique serial number, which can be registered on the door-stop website.

Aston Martin Vanquish S Red10 Flying on to ‘Built In Britain’ Feature at London Motor Show

A specially commissioned Aston Martin Vanquish S, which pays homage to the Royal Air Force and the Red Arrows Display Team, will take pride of place on the ‘Built In Britain’ feature at The Confused.com London Motor Show 2018.

The special-edition Aston Martin Red10 is the perfect tribute to the iconic Red Arrows, displaying the Éclat red colour seen on the Hawk jets, a Union Jack tail fin motif, ‘Smoke Trails’ on side skirts and an Ejection Seat Detonator cord. The V12 engine boasts a top speed of 201mph and can go from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, giving the feeling of going as fast as the RAF plane.

This one-of-a-kind vehicle is personalised in part of the famous “Diamond Nine” flying formation of the Red Arrows. With attention to detail, the car features a carbon roof with a zig-zag ‘charge’ pattern mimicking the explosives set into jet cockpits fitted to shatter the canopy in case of the pilot needing to eject. The Aston Martin Red10 will be the closest connection to a Royal Air Force jet you can get at this year’s event.

Unique in its reverence to the prowess of the Royal Air Force, which this year celebrates 100 years, the Aston Martin Red 10 not only represents the role of the men and women in the RAF, but the creativity and innovation of UK engineering, design and technology. All the attributes that make it a perfect fit for the all-new ‘Built In Britain’ feature.

The car on display was offered to the public in a raffle where more than 70,000 tickets were bought and over £1.5 million was raised for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Since its foundation in 1919, the RAF Benevolent Fund has been on hand to support the RAF Family, existing to support current and former members of the RAF, their partners and dependents. An independent charity, it provides assistance to the RAF Family, when in need. It also helps maintain and support the morale and wellbeing of those serving in the RAF in addition to protecting and preserving the RAF Memorial and Bomber Command Memorial in central London.

Alec Mumford, Chairman of The London Motor Show, said:
“Two great symbols of British prowess, engineering and design come together in this unique Aston Martin Red10 supercar.  There is no better way to show our appreciation for Aston Martin and the Royal Air Force than having this stunning vehicle on our ‘Built In Britain’ feature at this year’s show.”

The car’s owner, and winner of the raffle, Humphrey Bradley said:
“I was totally shocked to win such an incredible prize - absolutely gobsmacked. I am honoured to have supported a service charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund undertakes some truly incredible work supporting the RAF family.
“From those on RAF Stations to those veterans in care homes and everyone in between, they really are there for those that need help, every step of the way.
“As an ex-serviceman myself I know how important the work of charities like the Fund’s is – they make a real difference to real people and to be able to give something back at the London Motor Show is an honour.”

Tickets are currently £18.50 and one child (under 17) goes free with a paying adult. They’re on general sale now and available to purchase at thelondonmotorshow.co.uk.

Over 2.5 million miles and counting!

Gliderol driver John Pattle has estimated that he has clocked up over 2.5 million miles in his career and counting.

In all John, who is originally from Manchester, has actually served over 27 years with Gliderol. John’s career path was not one of going straight into the industry.  John started work in a local garage close to home before making the decision to move to Sunderland and start work in the pub trade for Vaux Brewery.

By 1990 John had found his way to Gliderol as a driver, a role he has made a career from ever since. He is a familiar face to all Gliderol customers. John has delivered doors to every part of the UK and Ireland for Gliderol and enjoys meeting new and old faces every week.

John has been married to Vivienne for 30 years and together they enjoy walking and spend many weekends on trails laid out by the National Trust.

John said:
“It’s a great place to work with a group of wonderful people and the years and miles have flown by.”
Commenting on the milestone, Gliderol Managing Director, Roy Sinclair, added:
“We’re proud to have dedicated members of staff like John who have been with us for a lengthy time and contributed to the continuing success of the business, we have six members of staff who have already clocked up more than 25 years here and many more with 10 years plus.
“It is these key members of staff, through the ups and downs of the last few decades, which have ensured Gliderol has maintained its position as a leading manufacturer and distributor of garage and industrial doors”.

£200k Rosebud loan opens door to further growth for Lancs manufacturer

A fast-growing Lancashire business which is a leading supplier of roller shutters and garage doors has secured a £200,000 loan from Lancashire Rosebud Finance, managed by Mercia Fund Managers, to support its expansion.

The funding will allow RCS Doors to double the floorspace at its Rawtenstall factory and create four new jobs.

RCS specialises in the design and manufacture of roller shutters for industrial, commercial and domestic use. The company supplies customers nationwide and offers a bespoke manufacturing service and fast-track delivery. Its extensive product range includes eco-friendly doors which improve heat retention and reduce energy costs.

RCS was established in 1999 by Steven Kenny, the current Managing Director, who is also Vice Chairman of the Industrial Door group of dhf, the industry trade body, and has been an active campaigner in promoting health and safety standards in the industry. The company, which now employs over 30 people, has been growing rapidly and has almost doubled its turnover in the past three years.

The funding will allow it to expand its operations within its existing premises by installing a mezzanine floor, and to employ two sales staff and two apprentices.

Rosebud Finance is managed by Mercia Fund Managers on behalf of Lancashire County Developments Ltd (LCDL), the County Council’s development arm.

Peter Rooney, Investment Manager with Mercia Fund Managers, said:
“RCS prides itself on its customer service and speed of delivery. Its rapid growth and its 98% customer retention rate is evidence of its success. The funding will allow it to create additional space to meet the growing demand for its products.”

County Councillor Michael Green, Cabinet member for economic development, said:
"The team at RCS focus on a bespoke offering. An impressive 98% customer retention rate is a clear indication of the success of their work, which we're pleased that Rosebud has been able to support as they look to grow even further.
"The company recently redesigned their website to give customers more details about their product. It's important for companies to use digital technology in this way, to develop their business and bring in new business.
"Rosebud supports businesses by providing them with the support and resources to help them grow. And thanks to our involvement with Boost Business Lancashire, we’re able to help businesses to find the tailored support that they need."

Yale strengthens smart door lock selling opportunities

Yale has developed its smart door locking range and marketing support to help fabricators and installers get to grips with the new technology and provide a superior product offering for end-users.

In October of last year, Yale released its TV advert for the Conexis L1 to raise awareness and promote the lifestyle benefits of Smart Door Locks to homeowners, helping drive consumer pull through for the innovative solution.

As well as promoting the benefits of smart security to UK homeowners, Yale has created a wealth of resources to help support its customers adopting the new technology. This includes not only print brochures, but also instore POS and a complete series of ‘How to’ videos.

The videos demonstrate the installation process for products as well as showing short clips that detail how to set up and connect the different locks. All of which helps make the process much more streamlined and simple for users.

What’s more, in 2017 the Smart Living suite opened its doors, providing a space for Yale’s customers to familiarise themselves with the smart products first hand, as well as ask any questions.

Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale Door and Window Solutions, comments:
“We want to give our customers as much support as possible developing business models and routes to market for the transition into the smart home market and make selling smart products as simple as possible.
“As Smart Locking is relatively new, there is currently no benchmark for smart door locks. Yale is helping change this by working alongside the British Standards Institute to create a Smart Door Locking standard.
“This will help regulate the industry and provide fabricators and installers with a recognised benchmark of quality. Yale’s Conexis® L1 is currently being used as one of the test pilot products to support development of the IoT Kitemark.”

As the popularity of smart door locks increases, Yale has also extended its range to offer a variety of new finishes. The Conexis L1, which launched last year, as well as the popular Keyless Smart Door Lock have both been updated to include brand new colour options. In addition to the chrome option, the locks are now available in satin nickel and polished brass finishes.

The new colours give homeowners more choice to select a finish that suits their style of door. The satin nickel and polished brass finishes have been designed to suit both traditional properties and modern homes alike. They offer up-to-date security that not only protects the home but look aesthetically pleasing on any compatible door. This improves the selling process as homeowners now have much more choice.

New ‘no compromise’ PerryShield fire door ironmongery for fire safety and cost compliance

As legislation continues to tighten in the wake of recent fire catastrophes, A Perry & Co is launching its new CE Marked and CERTIFIRE Approved PerryShield range of fire door ironmongery.

The complete, integrated, fire rated range of door hinges, locks and latches, and intumescent protection kits has been designed at a price point that enables specifiers to fit fire approved ironmongery onto applications without having to worry about spiralling costs.

The high-quality fire-resistant door hardware and intumescent kits are designed to ensure there is no compromise to fire door integrity in an emergency, providing a fire rating of either 30, 60 or 120 minutes.

Ian Dunnaker, company director at A Perry & Co (Hinges) Ltd, explains:
“Adhesion to budgets is dominant in the fire rated product sector. Traditionally, here is where corners have been cut, as price points have dictated that ironmongery has to be affordable and meet stringent cost criteria. Yet, as we know from recent catastrophes, it’s imperative that the safety and security of products is paramount.

“Over the last 12 months, A Perry has worked tirelessly to bring the most competitive range of CERTIFIRE approved fire door ironmongery to market. The price differentials between the new PerryShield range of hinges and standard ‘non-certified’ hinges are now minimal. This means customers can have the confidence that they can afford to select the products without compromising on safety and security, and risk rising costs".

 Fire Door Hinges

The hinges, which come in 10 different finishes ranging from antique brass to nickel plated, are suitable for any application whether light domestic or heavy commercial use. They fit all door furniture meaning that only the existing hinges will have to be replaced. For doors weighing up to 40kg, The Grade 7 CE marked and CERTIFIRE approved hinges are most suitable, and Grade 13 are suitable for doors weighing up to 120kg.

Fire Rated Locks and Latches

An integral part of the new PerryShield range are the premium tubular mortice latches that are essential to help prevent the spread of fire by ensuring the door remains closed in its frame. The latches are fire rated and CERTIFIRE Approved for up to 30 minutes. The 3 lever Sashlocks and 3 lever deadlocks are fire rated and CERTIFIRE Approved for up to 60 minutes.

Continuing the ethos of supplying only high-quality products, PerryShield latch mechanisms are tested to over 200,000 cycles.

Intumescent Protection Kits

The PerryShield Intumescent Kits are made from a sheet of an ultra-thin and flexible high performance intumescent material. The 0.8mm sheet contains intercalated graphite providing up to 60 minutes of fire protection and offers prominent levels of expansion and insulation. This prevents heat transfer when fitted on ironmongery and rebated into timber door sets. Each kit is pre-cut to the right dimensions, for quick, clean and easy fitting, matching accurately the hinge, latch or lock it is designed for.

All intumescent products are immune to moisture, humidity, atmospheric pollution or common industrial and household chemical substances. The kits have also been extensively tested to the latest British/European Standards BS.476 Part 22: 1987 30/60 min rated & BS EN 1634-1:2014 30/60 min.

In some cases, if the kits are used in multiple layers, they can provide protection up to 240 minutes to fire doors.

For more information on the PerryShield range, please visit www.perrytrade.co.uk or call on 01384 414001.

dormakaba Provides Guests at Village Hotels with Innovative Mobile Access Solution

Having worked with Village Hotels since 2015 to install fully integrated mobile access solutions into all existing properties, dormakaba’s Saflok Quantum RFID has now been specified for the new Portsmouth site.

Combined with the hetras cloud-based property management system, the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) capable lock allows guests to use their mobile device as a room key.

Portsmouth is the latest location to be added to the Village Hotels portfolio. It will offer guests a state of the art bed for superior comfort, as well as a Village Pub, a Village Grill Restaurant and a Village Gym including a swimming pool, right in the heart of the harbour city.

To ensure consistency across its portfolio, Village Hotels has continued working with dormakaba to provide Portsmouth guests with the same mobile access system that is found in all its other UK properties.

Specified for all hotel bedrooms, the dormakaba Saflok Quantum RFID not only offers an award-winning two-piece modular design for a contemporary finish, but also uses BLE technology to deliver a seamless, reliable and highly secure guest experience.

Answering the increasing demand for mobile compatibility within the hotel and leisure sector, the hetras cloud-based property management system interfaces with the dormakaba lock. This means guests can check-in online with their mobile device and use it during their stay as their very own mobile room key.

Neil Cryer, Head of IT Operations & Projects for Village Hotels explains:
“We now have the mobile access option in all 29 Village Hotels and will continue to integrate the system into new hotels in the future. We strive to provide choice and flexibility for our guests, and those that stay with us can now check in via a mobile phone device, an onsite kiosk and an assisted check in by a host at the hotel.”

“Our check in and check out scores were previously in our bottom five of measured criteria and have since moved to our top five, highlighting the growing desire for a choice of options on arrival.”

The dormakaba Saflok Quantum RFID is a low maintenance product, with battery life lasting up to two years and a low battery indicator set to alert staff when a replacement is necessary.

In addition to this, audit records are not erased during battery replacement – making it a quick and efficient procedure.

Suitable for both retrofit and new applications, this innovative access solution from dormakaba is ideal for hotel installations.

Rod Reading, dormakaba Projects and Solutions Director added:
“With dormakaba Mobile Access Solutions, hoteliers can turn individual mobile devices into a customer service tool, providing a convenient way for guests to fully-control their travel preferences.”
