New Diploma heralds launch of Europe’s first fire door inspection scheme

A new qualification for fire door and building safety professionals was unveiled last week, in an important step towards the launch of Europe’s first Fire Door Inspection Scheme.

While similar schemes are well established in the USA, the UK’s Fire Door Inspection Scheme is the first of its kind here and is designed to transform people’s knowledge and understanding about the critical purpose and function of fire doors in buildings covered by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order and equivalent legislation.

It aims to help improve fire safety management, protect property and ultimately save lives through creating a new pool of expertise and competence to help those with legal responsibilities under the RRO.

The new Diploma in Fire Doors is a joint initiative developed by the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI), the two industry bodies behind the creation of the UK Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS).

Gary Amer, Chief Executive of the GAI and spokesperson for FDIS, said: "We are extremely grateful for the Door and Hardware Federation’s contribution to FDIS. Their input to the metal doors module of the FDIS diploma was invaluable."

The FDIS online learning platform goes live this week, containing seven web-based education modules which are designed to be studied at a candidate’s own pace and location. A final examination can be taken at a local test centre, and successful candidates will be awarded the Diploma in Fire Doors and be entitled to use the designation DipFD after their name.

Gary Amer, Chief Executive of the GAI and spokesperson for FDIS, said:

“We already know there is strong demand for this qualification. The FDIS online education programme is available to anyone who wishes to have a greater knowledge of fire doors and a qualification to prove it.

“Not only does it allow someone to demonstrate that they are an acknowledged professional with recognised expertise in fire doors, but it is also the first step towards becoming an FDIS Certificated Inspector able to offer fire door inspection services to building owners and landlords affected by the UK’s stringent fire safety regulations.”

Peter Johnson, BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme Chairman, said: "There is little doubt that the certification of fire doors has helped to reassure specifiers and building owners that door performance meets required standards, and has been instrumental in improving safety and saving lives.
“The FDIS is a natural evolution, helping to highlight the difference between a certified safe door and those which may not be appropriate for use or have been rendered inappropriate by poor maintenance or misuse."

The FDIS Diploma has been researched and authored by industry experts. It comprises:
  • Foundation module - providing a basic understanding of fire doors and their components, including testing and certification, regulations and standards, inspection and maintenance

  • Timber fire doors and frames - a more detailed look at timber fire and escape doorsets, their construction, installation and functional performance.
  • Metal fire doors - information on how steel doors differ from timber doors, how they are tested, glazed, installed and maintained.
  • Glazing - detailed guidance on the different types of fire resistant glass, glazed apertures, glazing retention systems and beading and the importance of getting it right.
  • Seals - detailed information on the function and technology of intumescent, acoustic and smoke seals, how they're identified and installed.
  • Ironmongery and signage (Part 1) - covers why each type of ironmongery is essential, critical issues about installation, how to check it is functioning correctly and when the item should be replaced.
  • Ironmongery and signage (Part 2) - covers essential and non-essential ironmongery, the requirements for panic escape mechanisms and signage on fire doors.

Each module looks at the relevant regulations and standards that apply to fire door components and how certification is crucial to compliance.

FDIS provides a vital new resource to help the ‘Responsible Person’ complete fire risk assessments for the premises they manage. It also raises awareness of defective fire doors and the potentially tragic consequences of leaving these unchecked.
The independent certification of FDIS Inspectors is likely to start later this year, resulting in a searchable database of local inspectors who can check on the specification, installation and maintenance of fire doors in all buildings being built.
In order to become certificated fire door inspectors, Diploma holders will have to complete an additional education module which explains what is expected of an FDIS Inspector and how the scheme works. They will also need to demonstrate detailed knowledge and skills in a practical, working environment and be assessed by an independent third party, Exova Warringtonfire. All certificated inspectors will also have to work in accordance with the FDIS Code of Conduct.

CREATIVE THINKING AT BLUECARROT GENERATES ADVERTISING SPACE

How the application of vinyl transformed an unsightly storefront into an attention grabbing advertising medium.

Last December in an article on shopfront security we revealed that many planning authorities will not give planning permission for heavy duty shutters in high streets and shopping centres on aesthetic grounds.

For example, planning guidelines issued by the London Borough of Croydon state: "Where grilles and shutters are the only solution to deter criminal activity, the council will require such devices to be in character with the building and locality. Solid or perforated shutters, however well designed, will not be acceptable on the grounds that they adversely affect the character of a building and street scene, thereby contributing to an unwelcoming and hostile environment."

With such criteria in place it is very difficult for specifiers of shopfront shutters and grilles to achieve an acceptable balance between security and approved appearance. However, all may not be lost thanks to some creative thinking by media Company, Bluecarrot - read on to find out more.
Whilst operating a successful shopfitting business, founder and Managing Director Ian Cheetham was presented with a dilemma by one of his valued customers, a jewellery retailer in Chesterfield. Caught within the confines of Insurance requirements and Local Planning criteria, the retailer was forced to install security shutters to the inside of his storefront windows, which compromised the visual impact of the store during closing hours.
A ‘eureka’ moment resulted in the concept of high quality images being printed to vinyl strips, which in turn were applied to the new shutter front. The transformation created a dramatic effect, by both enhancing the shutter and providing an advertising medium for products within the store.
As the principle was developed and applied to external shutters, a graffiti-resistant coating was applied to the vinyl which enables straightforward removal of aerosol paint.
Over the years, Bluecarrot has provided media solutions for an array of high profile clients and has also secured third party advertising for vacant shutter space. Colourful, high impact shutter media can provide solutions for urban regeneration, directing customers to online services, product advertisement and brand awareness.
More and more retailers are realising the benefits of storefront advertising, particularly emphasizing online offerings when the high street outlet is closed. The full size image can accommodate an easily replaceable smaller section to advertise local or monthly promotions.

Unpaid invoices costing UK economy £1.4 trillion

  • 13% of small business invoices remain unpaid each year
  • 39% of invoices fail to be paid on time
  • 76% of the 25 employee hours per week spent chasing invoices could be saved with e-invoicing
Research released earlier this month from Tradeshift finds that 13% of invoices issued by UK small businesses remain unpaid every year, causing a £1.4tr black hole in the economy. At a time when life is tough for many small businesses, just under a third (30%) said cash flow issues caused by unpaid invoices could force them to lay off staff and 20% said they would have to turn down business or take out a business loan.

The responses to the Tradeshift survey from UK small business owners and financial decision makers are revealed in a report entitled “Getting Paid”, available to download from shiftbusiness.net/getting-paid. It found that small businesses issue 528 invoices on average every year and yet 69 of these remain unpaid, totaling 177m invoices.

In addition to these unpaid invoices and, despite the majority of small businesses having payment terms of less than 60 days, 39% of all invoices issued are not paid on time. When asked about the reasons for non-payment of invoices, 34% put slow payers at the top of the list, followed by companies going out of business (24%), disputes over work (19%), cash flow (11%) and administration (9%).

The resulting administrative burden of chasing these payments requires an average of 25 employee hours per week spent managing, processing and chasing invoices. Small business owners estimate that 76% of this time could be saved if all invoices were managed online, but only 28% said they currently handle invoices in this way. This burden is magnified by the fact that over a third of invoices are still received by post.

Mikkel Hippe Brun, Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Tradeshift, an online platform that aims to revolutionise e-invoicing by eliminating charges for small businesses, sees this as a dangerous trend that is crippling UK companies: "For centuries, the invoicing process has held small, innovative businesses at the mercy of others with a clear disregard of agreed payment terms and damaging cultural precedents. This is 2012 and there's no reason why invoicing shouldn’t undergo a revolution that fits the modern times in which we live rather than acting as a noose waiting to drop around the necks of the UK’s army of small businesses.”

The full report – available to download from shiftbusiness.net/getting-paid – contains the full research as well as tips for small businesses looking to reduce the burden of unpaid invoices. Small businesses can use Tradeshift’s e-invoicing platform free of charge. For more information, visit www.tradeshift.com.

Fair Pay – a radical new approach to motor insurance

Access to fair car insurance could be made easier with a radical new approach to calculating premiums announced today.

Motaquote, the firm behind young driver insurance iKube, has teamed up with TomTom to launch         Fair Pay Insurance.  Fair Pay Insurance recognises drivers willing to be monitored and demonstrate how good a driver they are.   It gives the customer preferential insurance premiums bundled with sat nav technology to feedback their driving behaviour.  Just like your car’s MPG, the better the car is driven, the further your ‘insurance fuel’ will go.

Ideal for drivers who are paying, or expect to pay, more than £1,000 for their car insurance, and despite being good drivers, feel unfairly charged.

Nigel Lombard, Managing Director of Fair Pay Insurance explains: “If you genuinely believe you’re a good driver and are happy to have your driving behaviour monitored, we’ll believe you and we’ll even give you the benefit up front.”

He continues:  “And our unique partnership with TomTom means that we are able to offer customers the very latest high-tech in-car TomTom navigation device with real-time driver feedback, enabling them to monitor and adapt their own driving behaviour on a day-to-day basis so they won’t get any nasty surprises as they go along or when it comes to renewal.”

Fair Pay is designed for those who genuinely believe they are good drivers and feel they could be unfairly charged because of a so called risk factor that insurers use to calculate premiums such as postcode, gender, age, vehicle type or an isolated previous motoring conviction, which doesn’t impact on their ability to drive well. And to prove they’re good, they’re happy to have their driving behaviour monitored.

Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director of TomTom Business Solutions, said: “We are delighted to be working with Motaquote, who have recognised this potential in launching such a groundbreaking product.”

As motor insurance premiums continue to rise, Fair Pay Insurance really does offer a fairer deal to drivers.
