Dorma ED 100 Offers Proven Reliability in IceHotel's Sub-Zero Temperatures

At the world-famous IceHotel in Sweden, ice is the key material. However, there are just some things that just can’t be made from ice, including doors and door controls.
 
For the entrance to the hotel’s luxurious Royal Deluxe Suite, a glass door and an automatic swing door operator were required but with this came the challenge of finding a product that would operate at sub-zero temperatures. DORMA market leader ED 100 door closer was up to the ice cold challenge.

Every year in Jukkasjärvi, 200km north of the Arctic Circle, the IceHotel is erected from 1,000 tonnes of snow with each unique suite created by a different designer from around the world. Faced with internal temperatures of -8°C, the IceHotel’s most luxurious suite needed intelligent door technology that would not be impaired by the climate and could still perform in the harshest conditions.

Delivering smooth operation and closing reliability at extreme temperatures, the ED 100 electromechanical swing door operator from DORMA proved ideal.

In low temperatures, the viscosity of the hydraulic fluid used in traditional swing door operators will rise. This can cause resistance and a decrease in speed which means the door may not close properly. As the ED 100 doesn’t use a closed hydraulic system, instead equipped with a multi stage gear, the operator requires only a small amount of high performance grease to continue to function at the highest standard.

Chris Lake is BWF Apprentice of the Year

18 year old Chris Lake, apprentice joiner at GS Haydon & Son Ltd in South Molton, Devon has won the prestigious British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Apprentice of the Year Award 2012.

At a glittering dinner at Lord’s Cricket Ground Pavilion on Friday attended by UK joinery industry’s most senior figures and business leaders, Chris was presented with his award by Stuart Littlefair, Specialist Manager from CITB-ConstructionSkills which sponsored the award. Chris also received a £150 cash prize from management consultants Lignum Associates.

Yale Follows Expert Advice for Doormaster™

Yale has introduced three new products to its popular Doormaster range. Two new 16mm faceplate composite locks and a smart new Gearbox Kit join the Doormaster portfolio, emphasising Yale’s commitment to satisfying customer needs.

Based on feedback from Yale’s customers, Yale has added to its popular Doormaster™ replacement multipoint lock product portfolio with two 16mm faceplate locks for composite or timber doors, offered with a 35mm or 45mm backset.

Yale has also unveiled a new Gearbox kit, providing a convenient and professional storage unit, which can be easily transported between site visits.

The new Gearbox kit has been carefully designed to enable the full Doormaster™ Replacement Gearbox range to be kept together.  There is also space to add three further Gearboxes of choice, and the kit also includes a Doormaster™ Overnight Lock and Universal PVCu keep, along with a T20 Torx driver. 

Says Paul Deans, Technical Adviser at Yale: “Our customers increasingly asked for a 16mm faceplate composite lock and we were more than happy to oblige, enabling Doormaster™ to help replace failing multipoint locks in even more door types.

Multipoint locks are fitted to 70% of all new external residential doors and many older multipoint locks are reaching the end of their lifecycle. Over the coming months and years, growing numbers of multipoint locks are expected to fail, with over one million expected to require replacement this year alone.

The new Composite Locks and Gearbox Kits have been cleverly designed to complement the existing Yale Doormaster™ multipoint lock range and offer a genuine ‘one visit, one repair solution.’

Fantastic, misty fogs

 
Road safety charity the IAM is offering weekly motoring tips from Britain’s top advanced driver, Peter Rodger. This week he is advising motorists on how to drive safely through fog.
 
“Fog is one of the most difficult conditions to drive in. Ensure you are prepared so that you can carry out your journey safely, and allow lots of extra time for the trip.” commented Peter.
 
Here are some of his tips for driving in the fog:
  • Before setting off, clean your windows and windscreen and ensure all your lights are working.
  • When you’re ready to leave, switch on the dipped headlights. Use front and rear fog lights if visibility is less than 100 metres, but don’t forget to switch them off when visibility improves – leaving fog lights on when headlights would be adequate is an offence.
  • Use your windscreen wipers on an intermittent setting to clear moisture.
  • Switch the heater or air conditioning on and leave it running to keep the inside of the glass clear.
  • Slow down and keep enough distance between yourself and the vehicle in front - make sure you can stop safely within the distance you can see clearly.
  • Fog is not the same density all the time – it may get thicker, slow down if it does.
  • Brake gently but earlier than usual so your brake lights warn drivers behind.
  • Be aware that other vehicles may be travelling without their lights on, so extra care and attention is needed. At junctions, wind the window down and listen for traffic.
  • Straining to see through thick fog will quickly make you tired – take regular breaks.
  • Take high-viz clothing in case you have to leave the car.
 
“Don’t underestimate the effect fog has on your visibility. Adjusting your driving to the weather conditions will help you to become a safer and more confident driver through the winter months.” continued Peter.
 
To help drivers stay safe this winter, the IAM has launched a winter driving campaign which includes a dedicated website, drivingadvice.org.uk, with traffic updates, weather forecasts and tips on how to drive safely in winter.

British high street is the “show room” for online and mobile shopping

Research from Skrill shows over one third of Brits window shop before buying on mobile or online, indicating a future shopping experience with the physical and digital integrated

One in three Brits use the high street just to window-shop, using mobile phones to compare prices, save details for buying online at home or make purchases, according to research commissioned for digital wallet provider Skrill as part of its Future of Money campaign. The research uncovers an evolving shopping ecosystem, where the high street, online and mobile co-exist to deliver an all round experience.

Although 82% of British adults bought online in 2012, the Skrill research reveals the high street is still playing a role in driving today’s behaviours. When out shopping, 22.8% of Brits have compared prices on their mobile, while a third have saved the details of an item in store in order to complete check-out on the web (33.6%) or have seen something in a store but ordered it online at another time (33.8%). A small, but potentially significant, 7.4% of high street shoppers have even used their mobile phone as an alternative check-out and purchased goods whilst in store, a figure that rises to 10.1% for those aged 25-34 years.

Siegfried Heimgaertner, Skrill CEO commented: "Our research has uncovered an emerging generation of shopper, one who is combining their mobile device with the internet to reach an alternative retail check-out process.

While we see cries of the ‘death of the high street’, consumers continue to leave the house for shopping inspiration, even if they then make the purchase via a smartphone or at home on the computer. As a result, we see an opportunity for high street retailers to turn browsers into buyers whilst in-store.

We expect this trend to continue as people look to remove traditional cash and card transactions, replacing them with online and mobile payments such as Skrill 1-Tap, for added speed and convenience. It will be fascinating to see what’s in-store for the future of shopping, with physical stores, online and mobile all incorporated into the retail experience.”

Highly demanding refurbishment of Georgian gem wins BWF technical award

The UK joinery industry’s highest technical award was announced at the annual dinner of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) at Lord’s Cricket Ground last Friday.

Following a keynote speech about the London 2012 Olympic legacy by Dr Peter Bonfield, Chief Executive of BRE, the BWF’s 2012 award for technical excellence and innovation in joinery manufacture was given to Icklesham Joinery for its outstanding renovation of the Robert Adam designed RSA House off the Strand in London.

This Georgian masterpiece, first built in 1774 and now one of the most exclusive business, social and film location venues in London, has been the home of some of the greatest thinkers and social activists of the past 200 years. Its Great Room has a famous glass domed roof allowing daylight to illuminate the celebrated paintings ‘The Progress of Human Knowledge’ by James Barry which adorn the upper walls.

Family-owned Icklesham Joinery in East Sussex was tasked with supplying the specialist joinery items for the House’s refurbishment including air conditioning unit housings, fire-rated doorsets and shutters, roof lantern mouldings, oak wall panelling, oak speaker enclosure units, cloakroom storage and the double entrance doors into the Great Room which also had to incorporate a hidden projector.

Marc Horsman, Contracts Manager, Ross Horsman, Purchasing Manager, and Joint MDs Robert and Jim Horsman, collected the award trophy from Wendy Trott, MD of Timbmet which sponsored this year’s award.

For its virtually silent, smooth operation, a series of DORMA ED 100 low energy swing door operators were supplied. These were installed to enable the doors to be opened under power when required and used as a conventional manual swing door at all other times.
 
Opening the door at precisely controlled speeds and forces, the ED 100 assures safety for all users and removes the barrier of physical ability.
 
Designed as part of DORMA’s elegant Contur range, the dimensions are kept to a minimum and the product styling co-ordinates with other DORMA automatics, manual door closers and ironmongery to seamlessly blend into any interior.

Success of fire door scheme prompts recruitment of general manager

Neil Ashdown has been appointed General Manger of the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS).
His recruitment comes in response to the increasing number of people registering for the FDIS Diploma and the launch later this year of the official qualification for certificated fire door inspectors.

Neil has worked in the door and timber industries throughout his career, most recently running his own businesses focussing on the sales of timber doors, joinery, loose timber and allied products, and the supply of non standard fire doors. He is a long-time member of the British Woodworking Federation and the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme. He has also achieved the FDIS Diploma in Fire Doors earlier this year – the diploma which he will now oversee.

He says: “It is good to be part of the contribution that FDIS can make to saving lives and property through creating a better understanding of the critical role of fire doors.  I passed the FDIS Diploma earlier this year and was very impressed by the online education it offers. I’m now looking forward to helping individuals and companies in the industry, as well as those responsible for building safety, to benefit from this new industry resource.”

The UK’s Fire Door Inspection Scheme is the first such scheme in Europe, providing professionals with online learning leading to a Diploma in Fire Doors, and a route to become a certificated fire door inspector.

The scheme is designed to help improve safety and save lives through creating a new pool of expertise and competence to help those with legal responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. It provides a vital new resource to help the ‘Responsible Person’ complete fire risk assessments for the premises they manage. It also raises awareness of defective fire doors and the potentially tragic consequences of leaving these unchecked.

FDIS is a joint initiative developed by the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers.

Review of the 60th ARGE General Meeting held in Helsinki, Finland - 13 to 15 September 2012


The European Federation of Association of  Locks & Builders Hardware Manufacturers

ARGE would like to welcome a new executive to the board: Mr Hans Weissenboeck. Hans is from Austria but represents the Swiss Association. He attended his first ARGE Conference in Budapest in 1993 when he was general manager of Grundmann GEGE (Austrian manufacturers of cylinders and locks). He continued as general manager after the merger of Grundmann with Kaba in 1997. For a number of years Hans has attended numerous ARGE congresses as a member of ARGE’s Working Group C and also, as convenor of TC33 WG4 TG4 on cylinders.

Resignations
The delegates attending the General Meeting were informed of the official resignation of two board members that occurred earlier in the year.

Mr Guiliano Modesti who had been a board member for eight years, resigned in April 2012 to focus on his work as Chief Executive of Dorma in Italy. And also Gerhard Wenger, who resigned in January 2012 after four years of service. Wenger relocated to Singapore, to become Head of Division (Access and Data Systems for Asia-Pacific) for Kaba.

 Both the Chairman, Jorma Siren, and General Secretary, Joachim Kieker, wished Modesti and Wenger well, and thanked them for their years of commitment to ARGE.

The General Meeting in retrospect would have benefited by being given more than an hour’s time. The Chairman ran through a list of what ARGE has achieved over the last year. Which included:-

  • The 5 meetings of the executive board
  • Development of the Business Plan
  • Cooperation with EDSF
  • Lobby work with KELLEN and ORGALIME 
  • The quarterly technical reports produced
  • The numerous marketing communications created and distributed via website news stories and press releases.
  • A review of the three active working groups and the single sub-group of WG C.

Sustainability
 The theme of the 60th Annual Congress was Sustainability, and this was emphasised in the review of the Business Plan. ARGE’s commitment to Sustainability was further addressed with an action plan on this topic that was written by Paul Browne of Assa Abloy. Unfortunately, at the last minute he was unable to present it himself. Stephan Schmidt from FV S +B came to the rescue and was the perfect understudy yet again.

Pierre Vilian presented his report on Standardisation. And Arjen Koole presented his report on the lock and hardware market, with graphs and forecasts.

All reports from the General Meeting will be available for members only on the website by the end of November 2012.

New Website
Zoe Quinlan, Marketing Executive, unveiled the new design of the ARGE website. This was very well received with some delegates jesting that it was too impressive to be British!  It has been produced by web design company, Hullaballoo and was launched on the 29th October 2012.

Review of the Lectures
A detailed review of the lectures held during the Conference will be published in our printed and digital magazines in early December. The digital version will be available at www.dijonline.co.uk from the 5th. 

For next year’s 61st Congress, Dublin has been put forward as a possible location

28 MINI FANS CRAM INTO THE RECORD BOOKS

A team of gym members from East Sussex smashed two Guinness World Records™ last Thursday for the number of people inside both a classic Mini and a 2012 MINI.

28 flexible ladies crammed their way into the MINI Hatch at Potters Fields Park, London as part of the eighth annual Guinness World Records day. The team broke their own previous record of 27 people, which they set in Eastbourne last year.

The ladies made full use of every inch of space available in the MINI, including the dashboard, the footwells and they even managed to squeeze four people in the boot.

As soon as they celebrated their first record the ladies dashed off to the ITV studios to attempt the second record live on This Morning, where by squeezing a staggering 23 ladies into a classic Mini, they managed to beat the previous record by two people.

On the same day more than 400,000 people around the world are took part in record-breaking events for the eighth annual Guinness World Records Day, which commemorates the day in 2004 when Guinness World Records became the world’s best-selling copyright book.

COMPUTER SAYS ‘NO’ - New research shows frustration induced by PC problems is reaching new levels

Be Friends with your PC is a campaign that encourages people to think about the performance (speed and stability) of their PCs. Most people experience frustrations with their PCs every day – such as slow start-ups, freezing, crashing and clutter – and this initiative aims to educate users on how they can solve these issues and become friends with their PCs again.

Slow, poor-performing PCs are making Brits increasingly frustrated. According to research released this week, the issue has become such a pain point that some Brits would much rather visit the dentist, queue for hours or be put on hold by a call centre for more than 10 minutes, than face a snail-paced computer.
Whether it’s a slow start-up or the loss of precious files and documents, the annoyance caused by PCs letting us down has sky rocketed.  Over a third of those surveyed find a slow PC just as aggravating as an airline losing their luggage and as infuriating as finding fraudulent charges on a credit card. For almost one in three Brits, the frustration is on par with losing a mobile phone.

To help ease the pains of computer annoyances, a ‘Frustration Zone’ has been set up to release pent-up stress and help users be friends with their PCs again. Fed up PC lovers can smash plates, hit out at punch bags and thump a boxer punch machine in a bid to tame tempers.

Gadget Expert, Suzi Perry, who officially launched the Frustration Zone, commented: “There’s nothing more frustrating than a slow PC. We’ve all suffered from sluggish computers at one point or another – we’ve missed deadlines, lost work and been driven to despair by machines grinding to a painful halt. Although it can be frustrating, the key is to resist the urge to smash something as there are lots of simple and effective ways to get your tech back up to speed. If you can’t resist the rage, the Frustration Zone is the perfect place to vent that pent up fury.”

Carlia McGowan has worked for Carl F Groupco for nine years in Sales Administrator and Co-ordinator roles. Sunray’s SR5 high security door can now incorporate louvres and vision panels

The introduction of Sunray’s independently certified Security Rating 5 high specification, high security steel doors, announced earlier this Autumn, has been exceptionally well received by customers demanding ever higher levels of physical security to protect their employees and property.

Constantly striving to always move forward, Sunray is now proud to announce that in addition to achieving the LPS 1175 (issue 7) SR5 rating for this doorset, it has taken its innovative development and testing even further and can now also meet this exacting security standard when either a VisionPanel and/or an ExcluVent are incorporated in the door.

ExcluVent provides a minimum of 53% free airflow when incorporated in a door and can be positioned in either the top or bottom sections, or both as required, without compromising integral strength and security. Constructed using reinforced welded steel, each ExcluVent louvre measures 400x400mm, is electro-zinc plated for increased corrosion resistance and includes an anti-vermin mesh at the rear of each panel.

Sunray’s VisionPanel offers discreet observation by natural surveillance where vision is important but without compromising security. Meeting the requirements of all security-conscious markets, the 200x300mm robust viewing area is constructed using a toughened glass sandwich system and is fabricated to the same exacting standards as the SR5 rated Sunray steel high security door.

DHF membership grows as it raises the quality bar

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has seen its biggest increase yet in membership numbers as more door companies embrace the DHF’s new quality standards.

In the last 12 months, 30 new members successfully applied to join the DHF, the trade body representing all the key players in industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates and building hardware.

The federation now has 229 members and expects many more companies to join its rank in the coming months. These companies want to benefit from the Quality Assurance initiative that only DHF members can offer their customers. The companies are also looking to the DHF for help in complying with new legislation coming into force next year.

All member companies must adhere to the DHF’s Quality Assured standards of capability, customer service and quality. The DHF scheme follows the introduction last year of a strengthened Code of Conduct governing members’ standards of workmanship, quality, training safety and business integrity.

Said DHF executive chairman Bob Perry:  

“Adherence to the DHF QA standards by companies involved in the manufacture, supply, installation and maintenance of doors and shutters gives them the competitive edge in the market.

“In addition, on July 2013, it will become a criminal offence to place any non-fire external doorset or non-fire industrial or garage door on the market without a CE mark. Companies are realising they need the backing and support of the DHF to enable them to comply with all the procedures they have to go through before they can apply the CE mark. 

“The significant increase in membership we are currently experiencing shows we are achieving our aim of driving up quality levels throughout the industry and delivering commercial benefit for our members.”

Euro hotel fire safety ‘not good enough’

A call for the fire safety industry to heighten awareness of the dangers created by hoteliers who fail to follow the Fire Safety Regulatory Reform Order (2005) has been issued by Exova Warringtonfire supported by North West European MP Arlene McCarthy.

An expose by BBC Inside Out South West revealed shocking failings in a number of hotels where one elderly lady found herself trapped and fire doors with seals missing, without panic bolts or emergency push pads.

At the same time, startling new figures released by Fire and Rescue Services show that 46 per cent of public buildings, 42 per cent of care homes, 42 per cent of schools and 37 per cent of hospitals were found to be ‘unsatisfactory’ when inspected.

Arlene McCarthy, Member of the European Parliament for the North West, has been a campaigner for improved safety in hotels.

She said:
“As former Chair of the European Parliament’s Consumer Protection Committee, I have been calling for tougher enforcement of fire safety in hotels for a number of years.

“Working alongside the Federation of European Fire Officers I have heard first hand of terrifying examples of negligence; sprinklers without a water supply, covered smoke alarms and blocked fire exits. The European Commission needs to take action to drive up standards to cut the fire risk and it is a shame that it is failing to make such progress.”
 

Chris Hughes, an Associate at Exova Warringtonfire, said: “You don’t expect to have to check the safety of fire doors and escape routes when you check in to a hotel but this is where it is going.

“Good fire safety management is important in hotels where large numbers of people find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings, reliant on the hotel getting it right.

“Professional accurate fire risk assessment, selection of products and installation are paramount to rectify any remedial works identified by the assessor.


“Good management of fire safety will become more and more important over the next 12 months as the government tries to reduce regulatory enforcement across all areas.”
