Industrial Door Engineering Awards Tracking Contract To Ctrack

Industrial Door Engineering Ltd, the Cheshire-based manufacturer of quality industrial doors and leading 24-hour emergency door repair service, has awarded a five-year contract extension to Ctrack

Under the agreement, the company will continue to use Ctrack’s advanced vehicle tracking across 18 cars and vans to better manage, allocate and protect its mobile resources. The system has already achieved annual savings of £21,000 from improved timesheet verification, as well as lowering fuel usage, increasing vehicle security and enhancing customer service.

The live tracking solution has enabled Industrial Door Engineering to view the exact location and status of its fleet to support operational decision making and better respond to incoming work and emergency requests. In particular, the company can instantly identify and dispatch the nearest and most appropriate mobile engineer to a job, whilst keeping customers up-to-date with expected times of arrival and real-time progress reports.

Meanwhile, the ability to produce automated activity reports has allowed Industrial Door Engineering’s management team to monitor and correctly calculate working hours. This has helped streamline and automate time-consuming payroll and administrative processes, as well as accurately verify overtime claims, resulting in savings of around £21,000 each year.

Ctrack has also provided added security and protection to vehicles and mobile workers that operate across a large geographic area. On two occasions stolen vehicles have been tracked and recovered using the tracking tool, preventing considerable financial costs and minimising the operational disruption to the business.

Martin Burke, Managing Director, Industrial Door Engineering Ltd commented:
"The Ctrack system has delivered an effective means of managing our fleet and reducing cost, whilst becoming a key part of our customer service offering. With the added visibility and control it has helped boost operational performance and replace previously manual reporting processes. We have worked closely with Ctrack over the past 13 years to take advantage of their advanced vehicle tracking technology and look forward to strengthening the relationship moving forward.”

John Wisdom, Managing Director of Ctrack said:
“We are committed to helping our customers embed our tracking technology into their internal processes to deliver measurable benefits and rapid return on investment. Companies such as Industrial Door Engineering are using our system to enhance their fleet management and keep operational costs under control.”

FM services come under scrutiny for fire door safety

Facilities managers and building owners are likely to see a renewed scrutiny on fire door compliance this autumn due to a new programme to improve the guidance to business and focus on legal enforcement by fire officers.

The Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) has strongly welcomed the recent announcement by the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA) to push enforcement of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, commonly known as the Fire Safety Order or RRO.

FDIS is also applauding the decision by CFOA to promote the use and acceptance of recognised professional certification and accreditation for commercial fire risk assessors, as well as creating an accredited framework of competence for fire safety officers nationally.

Neil Ashdown, manager of FDIS, says:
“A fundamental part of consultants’ and fire officers’ knowledge must be about the correct specification, installation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors. Fire doors, and all the components that must go with them, are a critical aspect of passive fire protection in all commercial and public buildings.

“This knowledge is what is provided through the FDIS Diploma in fire doors and through our scheme – the first in Europe – to create a register of independently assessed and certificated fire door inspectors who can work alongside facilities managers, landlords, local authorities and fire services to protect lives and property.”

The first fully qualified and certificated fire door inspectors have now started work around the country, and this month FDIS is launching its ‘Find An Inspector’ service for building owners and facilities managers: http://fdis.co.uk/inspector.  FDIS inspectors will help those with legal responsibilities for fire safety to ensure the safe functioning of all their fire doors, including providing  a professional service for building owners who require a competent and detailed survey and report on the condition and function of the fire doors on their premises.

The CFOA announcement was made in response to the Government’s ‘Focus on Enforcement’ review which identified problems with the inconsistency of approach and advice to the business community about the RRO by many fire officers. Similar problems have also been highlighted to Neil Ashdown by a fire safety training officer who is currently doing the FDIS Diploma and who confirms that consistency of advice and of enforcement is a big problem in the fire service.
“I have heard that there is a large disparity between fire authorities’ and individual officers’ attitudes, which many fire safety training officers are trying to address,” says Neil. “Unfortunately, knowledge about fire doors is just as patchy among fire service officers as it is among building owners. Only those who have had fire safety training will have any idea about fire doors. And even then, the legal side, current standards, maintenance of fire doors and other factors may be poorly understood.”

FDIS is writing to the chief fire officer in every fire authority to raise their awareness of the Diploma in fire doors and the relevant requirements under the RRO.

Union Introduces Eximo®: New Range Of Exit Devices

UNION, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, has consolidated and developed its panic and emergency exit device offering, launching a new suited range ideal for a variety of project specifications.

The Eximo® range – suitable for use on both timber and steel doors – has been launched as part of the larger ‘We are UNION’ campaign, to strengthen and broaden the brand’s offering.

Featuring eight new products, UNION’s latest offering includes panic latches and bolts, emergency push pads, mortice operated exit devices featuring UNION’s Optimus3 mortice lock cases, and outside access products with lever and knob variants.

All products within the Eximo® panic exit suite are suitable for use on exit doors and routes within public buildings where in a crisis, the exit route is unfamiliar, making them ideal for applications such as hospitals, schools and leisure facilities.

Conversely, the products available under the emergency exit range are designed for use in buildings, where users are familiar with the exit routes and procedures – making them a crucial feature in offices and commercial developments.

Designed to be easy to install, use and adjust, all Eximo® products are also fully retro-fittable with the market’s most popular products – an advantage when working on refurbishment projects.

All products within the new Eximo® range come with a 10-year guarantee and are non-handed to provide a flexible solution. Plus, with an enhanced finish and adjustments made to improve performance over time, the panic and emergency exit device ranges offer superior quality, at a competitive price point.

Ian Bartlett, Head of Product Management for ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, commented:
“In addition to complementing UNION’s mortice campaign, which is all about reinforcing our place as market leaders, the Eximo® range is also designed to provide a solution for all specifications.

“Following customer feedback we’ve ensured that all products within the new range are easy to use and install, helping to save time on site and ensuring optimum functionality. In addition, the comprehensive range is easy to understand, aiding the specification process.”

All UNION panic exit devices are fully CE certified to EN1125, with emergency exit devices tested to EN179. Plus, all products within the new ranges are Certifire approved, withstanding 30 & 60-minute fire tests on timber doors and 240 minutes on steel doors.

Tour de France Winner Chris Froome Tests F-Type And C-X75 at Jaguar Land Rover Proving Ground

Team Sky rider and 2013 Tour de France winner Chris Froome visited Jaguar Land Rover global headquarters at Gaydon, Warwickshire last week for a high performance test of the Jaguar F-TYPE sports car. Froome was recently presented with a new F-TYPE by Jaguar to celebrate his remarkable Tour win.

Whilst on track at the Jaguar Land Rover proving ground, Froome was also treated to a dynamic experience in a prototype version of the innovative C-X75. The Jaguar C-X75 is a state-of-the-art hybrid supercar with the efficiency of a low-emissions city car.  The C-X75 can hit 100mph from standstill in less than six seconds and has a top speed of 220mph. Its 502bhp, 1.6-litre turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine is one of the world's highest specific power output powerplants at 313bhp per litre. The C-X75's two electric motors add a further 390bhp, for a combined output in excess of 850bhp.

As well as experiencing these Jaguar sports cars, Froome took the unique opportunity to ride his Team Sky Pinarello bike alongside the F-TYPE, before flying to the USA for the Tour of Colorado.

Jaguar has been a partner to Team Sky since the team’s very first season of racing in 2010. The team is supported in their year-round racing and training activities by a fleet of Jaguar XF Sportbrakes.

Jaguar C-X75

Although the decision was taken in 2012 that, as a result of the global economic climate, the C-X75 would not enter full production, it was clear that it was a powerful showcase for Jaguar's world-leading expertise in lightweight vehicle construction and the ideal test-bed for the company's innovative research into high-performance, low-emission powertrains.

The great achievements in the development of C-X75 prototypes - including cutting-edge hybrid technologies, carbon composite materials and advanced design solutions pioneered in association with Williams Advanced Engineering - will be utilised in other areas of research and development, innovative future products and next-generation engineering for the Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

Splash Out on a Classic Next Weekend

‘Take a dip from us’, says Historics, as 50-year old Amphicar moors up for auction

If road congestion removes the enjoyment from summer motoring, classic car auction specialist Historics at Brooklands has just the answer at its forthcoming major sale on Saturday, 31st August, near Weybridge, Surrey.

A 1963 Amphicar, one of 127 classics on Historics’ varied roster, makes traffic jams a thing of the past. Resplendent in fashionable mint green with a contrasting white vinyl roof, it takes the word ‘convertible’ to a whole new dimension, as this amphibious chameleon is as much at home on the water as it is on the motorway.

Less than 4,000 examples of the Amphicar were manufactured between 1961 and 1968 and it is believed that this model, kept in a private collection for the last ten years, is one of only eight in the UK.

Powered by a 1147cc Triumph Herald engine developing 43bhp, transmitted through an all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox, the Amphicar has a top speed of over 70mph on the road, and features fully independent suspension front and rear.

Once eased down the slipway however, its wet weather handling can be explored to the limit, the Amphicar being easily capable of breaking the inland waterway limit. With a cruising speed of 7 knots, courtesy of its integral twin propellers at the rear, it recently demonstrated its remarkable dexterity afloat by towing a waterski champion.

This Amphicar - referred to by an owner as ‘the fastest car on the water and the fastest boat on the road’ - comes to sale with an extensive history file and is fully accessorised… with buoys and life jackets. With light restoration required, it is anticipated to attract strong bidding at its estimate of £30,000-£35,000.

The Amphicar and all 127 consigned vehicles and automobilia will be auctioned at Historics at Brooklands, near Weybridge, Surrey on Saturday 31st August, from 10.00am, with viewing on the previous day.

For more information and the full consignment list, visit www.historics.co.uk, or  call  01753 639170  and e-mail: auctions@historics.co.uk.

New Rig Increases Flexibility at Independent Test Lab

The ASSA ABLOY Test Lab has procured a new rig, which will enable the independent facility to test larger door sets, for a wider range of accreditations and testing standards.

Designed to accommodate the growth and demand in the market for folding sliding doors and large inline sliding patio doors, the improved testing apparatus can handle doors of up to 3m tall and up to 5m wide.

This increase in capacity allows the Lab to seek accreditation for additional door set test standards, significantly improving its capabilities. Amongst the standards it can now test for is the Burglar Resistance standards (EN1637-1630) to classes 1, 2 & 3, which is increasingly required on specifications.

In addition to the extended scope that the new test rig will provide the Lab with, it is also easier to set up and operate. The benefit of this is twofold – improving efficiencies and output, as well as increasing safety when loading and working on the equipment.

Speaking on the new rig, Ian Bridge from the ASSA ABLOY Test Lab said:
“We are really pleased with the installation of the new rig and the additional capabilities we can now offer to systems houses and manufacturers. After receiving positive feedback from UKAS following its accreditation visit, we look forward to offering testing for the Burglar Resistance standards for a more diverse range of door sets.

“As a standard that is increasingly specified under the Secured by Design accreditation, we feel it is important to be able to offer this classification across a broad spectrum of products. This includes folding and inline sliding doors, which are enjoying a real period of growth at the moment.”

The ASSA ABLOY performance testing laboratory offers over 160 individual testing criteria across 13 product categories. Comprehensive reports and sample photography are supplied to all clients.

Hörmann UK cycle coast-to-coast for charity

David Newcombe, the managing director of Hörmann (Ltd) UK, Europe's largest manufacturer of garage and entrance doors, is set to get on his bike in September in the name of charity.

The sponsored charity ride will see David be joined by three fellow riders. This will not be the team's first ride, in 2011 they cycled 833 miles from the South to the North of the United Kingdom from Lizard Point in England, to Dunnet Head in Scotland.

This time however, instead of going South to North, they are changing direction and are travelling the width of the UK and Ireland from the most westerly tip of Southern Ireland in Dingle, County Kerry over to the most easterly point of England in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Crossing three countries in eight days, from 7 to 13 September the team will cycle 580 miles with all of the proceeds being divided between Cancer Research UK and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

The cycle ride has been arranged by Hörmann's Transport Manager, Mick Dunne, who shall be accompanying the cyclists on their journey and offering encouragement along the way.

On facing the challenge David Newcombe said:
“I cycle quite regularly but that doesn't mean that this will be easy by any stretch of the imagination!
“Some days we will be cycling over 90 miles and we have to cross the mountainous valleys of South Wales which I think will be the hardest part, but it's great to be able to help such fantastic causes and to hopefully raise a large sum of money for them.”

The ride has received substantial support from not only Hörmann but also from many other Leicestershire companies including Exodus Financial Services and Steven Sanderson Transport. Further support comes from Tony Marlow from LanGuard Vegetation Management Specialists, who is supplying the support van that will follow the cyclists on their 580 mile journey.

Donations for the W2E team can be made at: www.virginmoneygiving.com/W2E.

KEY MANAGEMENT MADE EASY BY YALE DOOR AND WINDOW SOLUTIONS

Yale Door and Window Solutions has launched a new online system dedicated to offering a convenient and secure key management solution.

The new website, keyregistration.yaledws.co.uk, has been designed to offer an easy way to manage keys for homeowners and landlords, with simple navigation options to register and purchase replacement keys.

In just three easy steps, visitors can confidentially register their Yale Superior keys together with their address details, enabling them to order additional keys when required. Replacement keys ordered on the site will only be delivered to the registered address, enhancing the security of the service.

Online labelling of the keys during the registration process quickly identifies the location of the entry point for each cylinder in the home, further simplifying the ordering of replacement keys. Landlords have the option to enter multiple property addresses to ensure a convenient replacement key service is available for residents.

Key cutting will be organised directly with Yale Door and Window Solutions, serving the most popular brands sharing this high security platform, including Yale Superior, Millenco Magnum, Ultimate and Tricept.

Says Kevin Hill, Managing Director of Yale Door and Window Solutions:
“The web is now undoubtedly the first point of call for almost everyone, due to its ease of use and its accessibility at any time of day.  This makes it ideal to host a key management system, designed to be visually led and easy to navigate.

“With the new website, Yale’s aim is to provide a really simple way to manage keys for any property.  Visitors can access the site, safe in the knowledge that personal information and key data is confidentially stored. Keys can only be purchased by registered users and be delivered to one specified address, making the whole user experience convenient and accessible, yet totally safe and secure.”

The inaugural Bonhams auction in the fashionable seaside town of Knokke-Le-Zoute in Belgium on Friday 11th October will concentrate on European engineering.

Entries are still being accepted for the auction, which will be held during the Zoute Grand Prix Rally and the Zoute Concours d’Elegance.

Early consignments feature a number of Italian classics, including a 1954 Ferrari 212/250 with coachwork by Pininfarina (estimate €600,000-€900,000), a 1957 Maserati A6G/54 with coachwork by Allemano (€450,000-€650,000), and a 1973 Maserati Bora 4.9 CoupĂ© with coachwork by Giugiaro (€100,000-€130,000).

Germany, meanwhile, is represented by a 1950 Berlin III BMW 328 Powered Speedboat that is estimated to realise between €180,000 and €260,000, and several Porsches.

A 1962 356B/1600 Roadster is expected to achieve between €110,000 and €140,000, while a 1972 911S 2.4 Targa is offered at €90,000 to €120,000.

The auction will also include a number of Mercedes-Benzs: a 1958 Ponton 220S Cabriolet (€85,000-€105,000), a 1960 190SL
(€75,000-€95,000), and a 1966 230SL (€65,000-€95,000) are among entries.

Other lots of particular interest in the auction include a 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 estimated to realise between €45,000 and €65,000, and a 1983 Croco Tag offered at no reserve, and estimated at €12,000 to €18,000.

The inaugural Bonhams Zoute Sale will be held in conjunction with the Zoute Grand Prix Rally and Concours d’Elegance, which is held over the weekend of 10 to 13 October. The Rally, which begins and ends at Knokke-Le-Zoute, features 160 cars manufactured between 1920 and 1965, while the wider event will include exhibitions from car manufacturers and the Zoute GP Tour – a drive from St-Martens-Latem to Knokke-Le-Zoute reserved for GT cars that are less than 20 years old.

The Concours d’Elegance will take place on Fairway 1 of the prestigious Royal Zoute Golf Club, and will be judged by an internationally-renowned jury.

Philip Kantor, Head of the Mainland European Motoring department, said:
“Following the success of our inaugural sale at the Spa Classic in May, we are delighted to be heading to Knokke-Le-Zoute for the second of our two new auctions in Belgium this year.

“Our Spa sale was well attended by a large crowd of bidders and onlookers, and realised €3.4 million, with strong prices achieved for a number of motor cars. We hope for another pleasing result at this sale.”

MLA EXPO 2013 SET TO RETURN IN FULL FORCE

Dr Steffan George, development director for the MLA
The UK’s largest trade exhibition for the locksmithing and security industry is set to be the biggest yet, with four major sponsors and more than 70 exhibitors already signed up.

Taking place between 13-15 September 2013 at the International Centre in Telford, MLA Expo is organised by the leading trade association for the locksmithing profession, the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA).

The biennial event sees locksmiths and suppliers from across the globe meet to exhibit products and services, discuss industry trends and take part in training courses.

This year, the event - which has been running for more than 30 years - will be offering a series of training courses covering topics such as CCTV, Safe Lock Picking and Lock Related Standards, among many others. Delegates will also be invited to a party night on Saturday 14th September, offering visitors the chance to network with industry peers and enjoy an evening of entertainment after a busy day at the exhibition.

Over 1500 people from all over the globe are expected to attend the three day event, with exhibitors and visitors typically ranging from tool suppliers to practicing locksmiths, specialists such as heritage and auto locksmiths, manufacturers and suppliers along with associated companies. Previous exhibitions have seen visitors come from as far afield as Australia, China, continental Europe and the USA.

Global businesses Abloy, Mul-T-Lock and Yale, together with ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions have been announced as official sponsors of the event, and have booked significant floor space to showcase their very latest security products.

Dr Steffan George, development director for the MLA said:
“This is the 17th time that the MLA has hosted the Expo. We are thrilled to see it grow year-on-year, as locksmith and security companies from around the world come together and take the opportunity to showcase their products and services, network, share knowledge and make new contacts.

“We’re really looking forward to the event, which has become one of the most anticipated events in the locksmithing calendar.”

Delegates at the MLA Expo 2013 will also be able to enter a prize draw, with the top prize being a holiday in Las Vegas.

For more information about how to exhibit at MLA Expo, call 01327 262 255 or email enquiries@locksmiths.co.uk

As a not for profit association, the MLA ensure its member companies undergo strict vetting procedures so the public, government and industry receive the appropriate service and advice. MLA members share the ethos that ‘skill and integrity’ remain paramount in locksmithing and are able to provide sound advice based on knowledge and experience.
