Automated Doors Hit the Right Note at Liverpool Philharmonic

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is an Art Deco wonder. Built in the 1930’s, its structured clean lines encompass interior detail which echoes the elegance of a bygone era.

But the venue is also a thriving contemporary arts and entertainment venue – home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and presenting more than 350 concerts and events annually, including music, comedy and film – and therefore opens its doors to all.

So, when it came to a £14.5 million refurbishment, it was vital to fuse functionality with sensitivity within the Grade II* listed building. Improved accessibility needed to be incorporated and the remotely located control box was concealed within the Art Deco fittings. The solution was found in GEZE UK’s TSA 160 UFO automatic under floor operator for swing doors.

GEZE UK was the immediate choice for building contractor Gilbert Ash which had to incorporate the new with the old – a bank of timber-leaved doors with etched glass insets that front the imposing building. The TSA 160 UFO not only powers the heavy doors with ease but has the added bonus of being virtually silent in operation – making them ideal for a building renowned for its acoustic properties.

The doors were designed by Liverpool Philharmonic Hall’s architect Herbert Rowse as one of its many decorative elements. The designs on the etched glass relate to the fluidity of music and the ensemble of instruments that make up the orchestra. However, as manual swing doors incorporating plate glass they could be difficult to manoeuvre for young visitors and those with restricted mobility.

And with close to 1700 people attending performances, the need to provide an automatic alternative was a must to allow visitors ease of access – from front to lobby and lobby to foyer.

In order to fit the under floor operators part of the original stone floor needed to be lifted and carefully reinstated to preserve the authenticity of the Art Deco interior.

The TSA 160 UFO was specified because the operator is fully concealed under the floor allowing the ornate doors to take pride of place. The TSA 160 UFOs are tamper proof, easy to maintain and virtually silent in operation and can operate door leaves of up to 120kg in weight.

Jayne Garrity, Liverpool Philharmonic’s Head of Communications said:
“Improving accessibility for visitors to Liverpool Philharmonic Hall has been central to our refurbishment programme. The provision of automatic doors at the main entrance to the venue and lift access throughout the Hall for the first time are amongst a number of improvements we’ve provided designed to enhance our visitors’ experience.”

Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK, said:
“Every heritage building brings a unique set of challenges but technological solutions could be incorporated into historic interiors.
“This is a landmark building in the city and we are very happy that GEZE’s automatic swing door operators could improve the ease and accessibility of this prestigious venue.”

Spitfire Studios Secured By Allgood Trio

Originally built over 200 years ago, the revamped Spitfire Studios now combines commercial office space with eight residential apartments. Situated next to Kings Cross Station, the development is an outstanding example of how to sync modern commercial design with a rustique appearance.

The building’s interior is awash with exposed brickwork archways and sanded oak floors whilst each door is fitted with access control and automatic door operators.

Due to the site’s mixed use, it was imperative that Allgood Trio provided a package that gave the building a high level of security whilst separating the residential and commercial areas.

Allgood Trio designed an advanced security and access control package including a proximity based access control system to the platform lift, external and internal doors. These were complemented by stylish audio video entry systems, comprising of grade 316 stainless steel entry panels and flush wide screen video monitors that communicated with both commercial and residential spaces.

Discreet underfloor automatic door operators were installed to control the main entrance and lobby doors, providing users with a clean aesthetic and equal access into the building. High definition CCTV cameras were strategically positioned in and around the building, allowing remote viewing of both live and recorded footage of the entire facility.

For more information on Allgood Trio please visit www.allgood.co.uk and follow @Allgood_plc on Twitter.

SimonsVoss MobileKey Launches In UK

SimonsVoss, a leading electronic lock manufacturer and brand of Allegion, has launched a new keyless locking system named MobileKey in the UK. MobileKey is suitable for a variety of buildings, including commercial offices and healthcare applications.

MobileKey provides state-of-the-art technology and offers the end user simple, keyless locking by replacing a traditional lock with an electronic cylinder and standard keys with a transponder, PIN code keypad or an app on users’ own smartphones.

The system is highly secure, offering facility managers and those in charge of buildings sophisticated access control and complete peace of mind. MobileKey enables facility managers to tailor a full system specifically on their preferences and gives them the ability to grant specific access, and have time schedules, event logging and door monitoring at their fingertips.

MobileKey enables facility managers to tailor a full system
 specifically on their preferences

New MobileKey from SimonsVoss enables facility managers to have full control over building access.

Implementing the MobileKey is easy as it doesn’t require any cabling or drilling. It’s flexible and convenient, so should a transponder be missing, reprogramming is easy, with no need to replace locks or keys.

The SimonsVoss Mobilekey is a low-maintenance, low-cost and fully secure way to control a building’s access, and with a ten-year battery life, facility managers can take away the stress of current everyday security.

The system uses electronic door cylinders instead of mechanical ones

Ludger Voss, chief technology officer at SimonsVoss, commented:
“Electronic remote control keys for cars has become standard practice – so why not apply this principle to buildings? The SimonsVoss MobileKey is an affordable and inexpensive way to protect your building and its occupants.
“Better yet, the system uses electronic door cylinders instead of mechanical ones and can be fitted with no cabling or drilling required, causing minimal disruption to current occupants or visitors to your building.”
Allegion’s brands include Briton, CISA and SimonsVoss, products are used throughout healthcare, education, hospitality, leisure, transport and residential sectors, keeping people safe and secure where they work, rest and visit.

Caterham Seven 620R to feature at 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Legendary British car manufacturer Caterham Cars will showcase its ballistic Seven 620R model at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed (June 23-26).

The event’s 2016 theme is ‘Full Throttle – The Endless Pursuit of Power’, which fits perfectly with the pant-wettingly fast nature of the 620R – the most powerful production Seven ever built.

The blisteringly quick 620R will feature on the hillclimb every day in the ‘Race Car for the Road’ category. The car will be driven by former British GT champion, Jon Barnes, who began his racing career at the Caterham Graduates Racing Club.

Caterham will also be exhibiting on the Niche Vehicle Network stand, located on Stand 37. On display will be a Seven 420R, equipped with an innovative ultra-light chassis.

David Ridley, Caterham’s Chief Commercial Officer, said:
“Goodwood’s ‘Full Throttle; the endless pursuit of power’ theme is perfectly suited for Caterham and, in particular, the 620R.
“We have been building the most engaging, exciting and fun cars to drive for over 40 years and our cars are synonymous with perfect balance and intuitive handling – they’re not known as racecars for the road for nothing. This year, in our own endless pursuit of power, we’ve developed new chassis technology which makes even more of the fact that our cars weigh about the same as a postage stamp.”
The 420R on display at Goodwood features an ultra-lightweight chassis developed in conjunction with similarly iconic bicycle frame maker, Reynolds, and computer aided engineering consultancy Simpact. It is the first car in the world to feature a chassis using butted tubing technology taken from the manufacture of bikes.

The 420R on show will be a fully road-registered car to demonstrate the practical and viable uses of the chassis. Illustrating the link between car and bike, the stand will also feature a racing bicycle built with the Reynolds tubing.

Tate Solutions Opening Doors at John Lewis

Shoppers enjoying a visit to the new John Lewis store at Birmingham New Street Station are benefiting from trouble-free access and egress, thanks to the installation of a highly efficient and reliable automatic swing door systems installed by Tate Solutions, part of the Securefast group.

The 250,000 square foot flagship store is the largest John Lewis retail shop outside London. Huge demands are placed on doors in retail buildings; in particular the main entrance opening, back of house storerooms and restaurant areas were the footfall is high. Tate Solutions were tasked to provide accessibility and conformance to building and fire regulations.

The type and style of automatic door operators was therefore crucial both to accommodate the high volume of traffic, trolleys and pushchairs. Designed both for performance and for its aesthetic appeal, the Tate EMD-F was chosen to maximise that all-important entrance facility.

The Tate Solutions EMD-F is an electro-mechanical drive system for hinged doors which – like all products in the Tate Solutions range – manages to do its job with a construction height of just 7 cm. This makes the Tate Solutions EMD-F particularly suitable for installation on narrow profiles and in situations where space is at a premium.

Tate Solutions EMD-F is a strong piece of highly compact technology: it will move even large and heavy internal and external doors, effortlessly and with virtually no noise. The quiet operation is achieved by using a low-noise direct current motor and gears with direct power transmission to the door leaf with the help of the rod assembly/guide rail. The reliable operation of the drive is achieved with high performance motor with low wear characteristics and state-of-the-art control technology.

For further information on the Tate Solution range of access control products please contact the sales team on 01543 501605, email, sales@tatesolutions.co.uk or visit the web site www.securefast.co.uk

NSI launches Powered Gates Certification Scheme at IFSEC

The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) has announced today the launch of its ground-breaking Powered Gates certification scheme. Installers and maintainers of powered gates, barriers and gate automation equipment are now able to obtain NSI approval for the Services they provide in this sector.

NSI approval provides the ultimate reassurance for buyers and users of powered gates that their contractor is complying with the highest standards of safety and security.

For the past two and a half years, NSI has been working with the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) in the development of their new Powered Gate Code of Practice (DHF TS 011:2016 - Code of Practice for the Installation and Maintenance of Powered Gates). The new code, upon which the NSI certification scheme is based, covers installers’ responsibilities for gate design, new installations, risk assessment and commissioning. It also details their responsibilities for the maintenance and modification of existing gates and covers risk assessment, safe isolation and documentation.

The NSI scheme based on the DHF code is a significant response to industry concerns over poor safety standards and tragic accidents caused by unsafe powered gates. Since 2005 there have been seven deaths in the UK and Ireland, at least eight serious injuries and countless near misses caused by dangerous powered gates. It is reported by DHF that just 30% of the 500,000 automated gate installations in service in the UK are safe. NSI’s new Powered Gates certification scheme is designed to reduce the safety risks associated with powered gates to as low as is reasonably practicable, and giving confidence to buyers and users in the service providers they choose to use.

Six companies working in the powered gates sector recently volunteered themselves for scrutiny by taking part in a comprehensive pilot audit programme guided by the DHF and conducted by NSI. The programme tested the efficacy of the new code as fit for purpose including verifying the competence of NSI auditors, and the practicality of the audit process.

Richard Jenkins, NSI chief executive said:
“We are delighted to announce that from today, NSI is open for business for organisations seeking Powered Gate Approval as verification of their expertise and professionalism and commitment to gate safety. The pilot programme was invaluable in validating the code, the competencies of our auditors and our audit process.
“We and the DHF are immensely grateful to the organisations who took part in the pilot programme. Many lessons have been learned over the last two and a half years and we can be rightly confident that the ‘Gates’ certification scheme will demonstrate the commitment of progressive organisations working in the powered gates sector to raising standards.”

Bob Perry, DHF executive chairman said:
“This has been a really fulfilling project, with us and NSI working so effectively together. I’m really pleased that this important new scheme is being launched today and we wish NSI every success in delivering it.”

Approved companies will be able to issue NSI/DHF Certificates of Compliance to the owners and operators of installations completed in compliance with the code. DHF TS 011:2016, the Code of Practice for the Installation and Maintenance of Powered Gates, can be downloaded from the DHF website:

www.dhfonline.org.uk

Companies interested in achieving certification for their powered gates business should contact the NSI Applications Team on: T: 01628 764855 E: applications@nsi.org.uk

About the National Security Inspectorate:

End users who choose to contract NSI approved companies can be assured of security and fire safety services delivered to the highest standards by businesses committed to quality. The National Security Inspectorate (NSI), with a national network of full-time qualified auditors specialising in security and fire audits, is recognised as the UK’s leading specialist certification body and counts the UK’s premier security and fire safety providers amongst its clients. NSI provides robust auditing by NSI experts to verify compliance with relevant British and European standards, Codes of Practice and certification schemes developed by industry bodies and associations.
www.nsi.org.uk

About the DHF:

Representing all the key players in the following sectors: powered gates, industrial/commercial doors, metal and timber doorsets, garage doors, and locks & architectural hardware. With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service. They all operate within a Code of Conduct governing standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety, business integrity and CE marking compliance.

More Information on DHF TS 011:2016
The key element within the NSI scheme is DHF TS 011:2016, a new industry code of practice designed to reduce the safety risks associated with powered gates to as low as is reasonably practicable.

DHF TS 011:2016 has been developed in conjunction with NSI by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), which represents Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment.

The DHF Code of Practice for the Design, Manufacture, Installation and Maintenance of Powered Gates has taken two years to develop. It confirms the UK automated gate industry’s place at the forefront of powered gate safety.

The aim of DHF TS 011:2016 is to reduce the risks associated with powered gates by giving installers and maintainers - and all adherents to the code of practice a framework to ensure a gate is safe and therefore complies with the law. The code draws on safety legislation, European standards, and industry best practice. It gives practical help to all those involved in powered gates to meet their legal obligations by providing clear guidance on the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of powered gates.

Garador Supports Coast to Coast Charity bike ride!

Garador’s large fleet of trucks do much more than deliver new garage doors. Recently, they were used to deliver over 500 bikes to their riders so they could take part in a recent big Coast to Coast charity bike ride.

It was all part of a major fund raising activity for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, and involved some energetic pedalling over 54 miles from the north coast of Somerset to the south coast of Dorset.

"Ensuring all the cyclists and their bikes were at the right place at the right time was vital,” said Simon Hipgrave, managing director of Garador. “We were more than willing to give a hand and our modern fleet of well kitted out trucks was easily adapted so all the bikes could be transported safely".

Bill Sivewright, Chief Executive Officer of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, said they were amazed by the support of the communities on the route and the numbers who turned out to support the riders.

Garador played a crucial part in helping to reunite cyclists with their bikes. With over £54,000 raised thus far, this was by far the best Coast to Coast Challenge yet and a great boost for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Visit www.garador.co.uk for more information on Garador garage doors.

What Should be in your Health and Safety Toolbox?

Door and Panel Lifter

Every year, workers in the construction industry are injured as a result of their work, some even resulting in death. While there have been big improvements made over recent years, clearly more can still be done to keep employees safe. With National Health and Safety Week (20-24 June 2016) just around the corner, Carrie Earle, category manager at IronmongeryDirect, takes a look at some of the latest tools available that have been designed to improve safety for trade professionals and reduce the risks of common work-related injuries.

Trade professionals working within the construction industry are regularly tasked with improving the safety of a property or building, but how often do they actually consider their own health and safety? Despite fatal injuries being at their lowest in 20 years, non-fatal injury cases are on the rise. According to the latest statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in 2014/15 in the construction sector, 69,000 workers were suffering from a work-related illness and 65,000 non-fatal injuries to employees were reported.

Construction and building work remains a high-risk activity as the role can present various workplace dangers; from lifting heavy objects to using machinery or vehicles. As well as affecting employees, workplace injury and ill health can cost businesses a lot too, so it’s vital that business owners have stringent measures and procedures in place to not only protect their staff, but also their company.

Regular risk assessments can help to identify any hazards associated with the work, so action can then be taken to put in place measures that will reduce the chance of an incident occurring. Effective management of work activities and competent site supervision are essential in maintaining good health and safety standards.

For trade professionals tasked with potentially hazardous jobs, employers are legally required to supply them with suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) that can help to protect against possible injury or illness, such as eye protectors or gloves.

Alongside this essential equipment, there are also handy tools available that can make the job safer and prevent common injuries from occurring.

Roughneck Gorilla Gripper
One regular cause of injury comes from lifting and moving heavy objects, a task often undertaken by trade professionals. Fortunately, there are a number of new devices on the market, which can help take some of the weight and make lifting safer and easier. The Roughneck Gorilla Gripper is one such product that has been designed to grip, lift and carry heavy materials such as doors, large sheets of material and worktops. It removes the need for a tradesperson to bend or lift, therefore reducing potential injury to the back, wrist or fingers.

Another tool which helps make lifting easier is IronmongeryDirect’s Door and Panel lifter. The robust tool, made from high-grade steel, helps to lift doors up to 75kg, meaning tradespeople do not need to bear the brunt of the weight. The tool also makes hanging a door a quick and easy process as it enables one person to do a two-man job.

Air pollution is another risk to consider when working in the construction sector that can cause illness. For example, sanding paint or wooden objects, such as doors, can create a lot of fine dust that can be easily inhaled and irritate the respiratory system, or can get into eyes. The dust may contain hazardous substances too, which could be extremely harmful if inhaled or ingested.

To overcome this problem, the Mirka Abranet Dust Free Sanding Kit has been designed to allow users to experience dust-free sanding as the hand sanding block can be connected to a dust extraction system using a hose, allowing for a healthier working environment. This also helps to dramatically reduce clean up time.

The construction sector, as with other high-risk industries, can present a number of hazards depending on the job being carried out. However, with strategic planning and effective risk assessments in place, employers are able to consider the best solutions to keep the risks to a minimum. Fortunately, there are various health and safety solutions available so employers can ensure that workers are not put in danger.

Cadillac intimately linked to life of President John F. Kennedy for sale with H&H Classics

H&H Classics are selling a 1949 Cadillac that comes freighted with the astonishing Kennedy clan history, a presence at the wedding of JFK and Jackie, at the baptism of their children, his presidential inauguration and at JFK’s funeral following his assassination in 1963, a story that still perplexes and fascinates the world.

The Cadillac will be sold at H&H Classics Chateau Impney sale on July 10th in the Midlands for an estimated £35,000 to £45,000.

The car was owned by the Archbishop of Boston, Richard J. Cushing (1895-1970), a close friend of the Kennedys (who were Catholics). He officiated at the marriage of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953 and he baptised many of the Kennedy children and gave the prayer invocation at JFK's presidential inauguration in 1961. Cushing also led the religious ceremony at President John F. Kennedy’s funeral in 1963. Research indicates that this car would have carried the Cardinal to all these happy and sad Kennedy events.

Cushing was known for his very liberal views on Catholicism which led him on occasion to openly disagree with the Vatican. He was made a Cardinal in 1958 by Pope John XIII.

The 1949 Cadillac 75 Fleetwood 5-passenger Sedan has a 160 hp 5.4 litre V8 engine. Only 220 cars of this type were made and this is number 103. It is finished in black with a beige/brown cloth interior with wooden trim, and whitewall tyres and has a 4-speed Hydra-Matic (automatic) gearbox.

The car is fitted with electric windows and it still has the original radio. It was one of the last Cadillacs with 'Turret-Top' styling. The car is well restored, is in excellent condition and will turn heads at shows or on the road because of its fascinating history and massive size - 5,7 meter (226 inches) length, 1,83 meter (68,5 inches) height and 2 meter (82 5/16 inches) width.

This historic car’s second owner was Mrs Jeanne Klonel and her son Mr Ronald S Klonel from Indiana. Around 2000, Ronald Klonel sold the car to a collector from Finland, who in turn sold the car to the present owner in 2004. The Finnish registration document stated that the car was once owned by the archbishop, who led the JFK funeral ceremony.

There is a copy of a letter from the Cardinal in the car's files, dated 1968, to Mrs Jeanne Klonel, stating: 'I pray that you may enjoy this possession for many more years and that it will carry you safely wherever you go'. He also apologised that it was just a brief letter, because he was still mourning the death of Robert F. Kennedy who had been buried only a few days earlier.

Martin van der Zeeuw, H&H Classics agent in Holland, who found the car, says: “Every now and then one comes across a car that is particularly interesting not just for its engineering or design or any other physical reason but because it casts a light onto our own human history. And this is one such car, its very close links with the remarkable, brilliant, tragic Kennedy family, makes it an object of particular and historic interest.”

The car comes with a large file of its history including all the work relating to its restoration.

Renovated steel windows and brass window funiture stand out at Freemasons’ Hall

For nearly two decades, Steel Window Association member, Steel Window Service and Supplies, has been involved with work relating to the windows of Freemasons’ Hall, the headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England and the principal meeting place for Masonic Lodges in London.

The latest project has seen the renovation of 15 large windows complete with leaded lights and coloured glass on one of the building’s main staircases.

Built between 1927–1932, the Grade II* listed Freemasons’ Hall is among the finest Art Deco buildings in England so, despite the very poor condition of the windows in the five-storey stairwell, it was important to salvage as much original fabric as possible.

Following an initial site visit by Steel Window Service and Supplies, working drawings were produced and the windows were carefully taken out and transported to the company’s workshop. Here, the glass and window furniture was removed and labelled. Sadly, the original ‘medium universal’ steel sections had deteriorated beyond repair so had to be scrapped.

The nine-week renovation project saw Steel Window Service and Supplies manufacture new steel frames using W20 sections that closely replicated the original medium universal profiles. The frames, which are in a range of sizes with the largest around 1m wide by just over 2m high, were polyester powder-coated in RAL 5010 gentian blue to match the original colour.

Each of the leaded lights was repaired using as much of the original coloured glass as possible while matching in new rolled coloured glass where sections were missing or damaged. All the work was carried out using traditional lead cames and soldered joints. Where necessary, saddle bars, tied in with copper wire soldered to the cames, were incorporated to prevent the large panels flexing.

Incorporating a star within the design of the handle, the brass window furniture - including stays - was chemically cleaned and, rather than being polished, repatinated before reinstatement. The windows were fitted with either vertical or horizontal pivots and friction pivot cup hinges which allow up to 90 degree opening.

Mark Kennedy, head of maintenance and building projects, Freemasons’ Hall, comments:
“The work Steel Window Service and Supplies has done is really excellent with great attention to detail and the coloured glass and leading looks really good. The windows were in a terrible state but now, if you go into the courtyard and look up, they stand out without standing out, just as was intended when the building was built.”

Passive fire protection measures demonstrated in dramatic fashion by Exova Warringtonfire at FIREX International

Exova Warringtonfire will be demonstrating in dramatic fashion, the benefits of effective passive fire protection at FIREX International in June.

Using a mix of highly engaging interactive exhibits, including examples of a full size burnt fire door, glass, structural steel and service pipes, together with time-lapse video demonstrations on its stand C175, the team will encourage visitors to get hands on with their learning.

Technical experts will offer guided tours of its 80m² passive fire protection demonstration zone, commencing with a full-scale corridor and suspended ceiling simulation. The corridor will demonstrate best practice specification and installation of passive fire protection measures including fire doors, service pipes, cables, light switches and downlighters.

Meanwhile, Ross Newman, Principal Technical Officer at Exova Warringtonfire, will be a part of the panel discussing the Fire Safety Order 10 years on, examining what’s been learnt since its introduction, and whether it’s still fit for purpose. The seminar is the first of the exhibition and is scheduled for 10.45 am on June 21st in the Expertise and Guidance theatre. Ross will be joined by Nicholas Coombe from the London Fire Brigade and Colin Todd from C.S. Todd Associates.

On Tuesday afternoon at 15.10 and again on Wednesday afternoon at 12.40, Mark Cummings will host a 30 minute seminar which will demonstrate in dramatic style the difference in performance between correctly and incorrectly specified and installed fire doors, glazing and fire stopping for pipe and cable penetrations. Mark is the commercial head of Exova Warringtonfire’s fire testing team and has over 15 years’ experience of fire testing products, as well as representing the organisation on technical committees and trade associations.

In addition to the fire safety displays and demonstrations, experts from Exova BM TRADA and Warrington Certification, will also be on hand to explain the important role that third party certification plays in ensuring passive fire protection products perform as intended.

Details on its Certifire, FIRAS, FRACS and Q-Mark third party certification schemes for fire door manufacture, installation, inspection and maintenance will be available, as will those for the installation of fire-stopping elements and fire risk assessors.
