HOPPE handles add security by design


HOPPE UK’s PAS24 security handle has been specified for use on a range of premium homes in Surrey. 

Leithfield Park is a new build development by David Wilson Homes in Milford, Surrey. Surrounded by the Surrey Hills, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, the award-winning site consists of a selection of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes designed to be in keeping with the surrounding picturesque landscape.

When work began at Leithfield Park in 2014, building control specified that all window and doorsets should meet Secure by Design (SBD) recommendations, in addition to existing building regulations including Approved Document Q that specifies security in dwellings.

For Bracknell Glass Ltd, the door and window supplier for the site, this meant that it needed to use ironmongery that met the SBD Design Guide recommendations. The guide advises that front doorsets and windows meet one standard from a recommended list - including PAS (Publicly Available Specification) 24:2012.

PAS 24:2012 is a minimum standard produced by British Standards Institution (BSI). Every door and window is tested to the standards specification with a fail or pass - there are no higher or lower grades of security.

PAS 24:2012 provides a method for testing and assessing the enhanced security performance requirements of external door sets and window types. It helps homeowners to resist the levels and methods of attack most often experienced in the UK that are usually associated with the casual or opportunist burglar.

With such a specific set of requirements to meet, Bracknell Glass Ltd turned to HOPPE UK.

“There were limited options as not many handles in the market are SBD rated,” said Glenn Cullip, technical manager of Bracknell Glass Ltd. “The HOPPE Atlanta handle passed the SBD testing and was extremely competitive on price. It was an easy decision for us to use it on all of the doors and windows we were supplying to the site.”

The HOPPE PAS24 security handle is designed to enclose the locking cylinder to protect against snapping and extraction. The Atlanta handles has passed cylinder and door hardware attack tests to deliver enhanced security performance and therefore a greater protection of property.

With six finishes, aesthetics and hardware can work in unison to create a striking design without having to compromise on security.

New dhf ‘Best Practice Guide’ set to Raise Standards

The new ‘Best Practice Guide’

dhf (Door & Hardware Federation) has published a new ‘Best Practice Guide’, which has been deemed an industry ‘must-read’.  

Developed following detailed consultations with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), and using simple terms, the document is entitled Management of Maintenance, Modification and Repair of Industrial Doors, Domestic Garage Doors, Automated Gates & Traffic Barriers.

The comprehensive, yet easy-to-read guide, is currently available to download from the dhf website www.dhfonline.org.uk

It is anticipated that maintenance contractors, owners, workplace managers, landlords, managing agents and facilities managers will benefit from dhf’s new publication, which offers a step-by-step guide to managing the maintenance, repair and modification process.  The guide also includes an example of an ‘unsafe system warning notice’.

Concerns were initially expressed by dhf members that section 3 of the ‘health and safety at work act 1974’ requires that all maintenance work must result in a safe outcome.  When owners refused safety upgrade work, maintainers were facing an impossible situation.  The new publication identifies very accurately where the legal responsibilities lie and has been described as ‘one of the most significant documents since the introduction of the dhf Code of Practice TS 011:2016 last year’.

“We are delighted to launch dhf’s new, simplified ‘Best Practice Guide’, which offers information on the processes and legal requirements pertinent to the maintenance, modification and repair process for these systems,” says dhf’s Marketing Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.

Allegion names John Hiscock to Lead UK’s South West Business Team


Allegion UK – part of Allegion plc, a leading global security products and solutions provider – has named John Hiscock as business development manager of its business development team in the South West.

Hiscock joins Allegion from Siniat UK, where he held a similar position, working with channel partners, contractors and specifiers. Prior to Siniat UK, Hiscock was a territory manager for Travis Perkins.

His focus for Allegion will now be on the housebuilding market, expanding relationships with architects and contractors and assisting them with product specification. Hiscock will also be overseeing activity in healthcare, commercial and educational sectors as part of his role, and he will report to Simon Osborne, commercial leader of Allegion UK & Ireland.

Laidlaw nears completion of £2m bespoke ironmongery project for Battersea Power Station


Laidlaw has played a key role in the delivery of the landmark Battersea Power Station development in London, designing and manufacturing £2 million of specially made architectural ironmongery.

Laidlaw’s Major Projects, a specialist division that has a proven track record of successfully completing work on landmark projects, significantly enlarged its dedicated project management team over the three years it was involved in the first phase of the £9 billion scheme.

The phase 1 development comprises 12 high-rise residential blocks to the west of the 39-acre site and Laidlaw’s team worked closely with main contractor, Carillion PLC, Simpson Haugh Architects, DRMM & three leading joinery contractors to deliver this highly complex project.


Laidlaw designed and manufactured a number of bespoke products, including entrance handle and plate sets, internal apartment lever handle sets, thumb turns, flush pull handle sets and hinges for the prestigious development. More than 80% of the products were manufactured in the UK, using specially produced dies and castings and all products were hand-finished in a bronze that was developed specifically for the Battersea Power Station project.

Managing Director Peter O'Brien said that Laidlaw paid particular attention to combining complete security and durability with high-end design, which was a priority for the Battersea Power Station Development Company.

This meant working alongside the project design team for many months to design, refine and test products to meet the stringent requirements of Secured By Design / PAS24 while retaining the required original design aesthetic.

“We are no stranger to large-scale, prestigious projects and we are proud of our record of delivering successfully on every occasion,” said Peter. “The Battersea Power Station development is a particularly large and exciting scheme to work on and we pulled out all of the stops to ensure we delivered ironmongery of the highest quality and in line with design and construction deadlines.

“Our commitment to ensuring the success of phase 1 has led us to increasing the number of dedicated project managers and they have all done an incredible job in delivering ironmongery of exceptionally high-quality. We look forward to continually developing our proposition for future phases of the scheme in association with the client.”

The Battersea project is the latest in a string of prestigious schemes that Laidlaw’s Major Projects has completed.

Brian May Jowett Javelin joins thoroughbreds at Sandown Park for Barons Classic Car Sale


Barons is amassing an impressive selection of high-end classic and collectable cars for its Connoisseurs Classic Car Collection sale at Sandown Park on July 18. 

One unusual lot amongst all the splendour is a gold 1952 Jowett Javelin – but one with a fascinating story. It was bought in 1982 by legendary guitarist Brian May of Queen fame, as a gift for his father Harold.  Since Harold May passed away the car has sat in dry storage and Brian May has now asked that the car be auctioned for charity.

Complete with personalized registration number ‘HWM 57’, it is offered at £3,000-£6,000, providing an opportunity to acquire a very special British car with a substantial history with British rock ‘royalty’ and to support a good cause at the same time.

One eye-catching entry is the gloriously streamlined 1964 Jensen CV8 (£43,000-£45,000).  Originally owned by the philanthropist Robert Hitchens and his family for almost 40 years, this car was judged to be the best CV8 at the 2017 Jensen Club international meeting.


Also for auction is a 1961 Austin-Healey BN7, a well-preserved example of one of the rarest of all the Big Healeys produced; just 355 examples were manufactured.  The specification of this particular model is even rarer in that it has a triple carburettor engine, which was only used for a year of the production run.  Estimate: £65,000-£85,000.


E-type Jaguars have an enormous following, and Barons has two fine Series 2 FHC versions of this most desirable of all ‘Big Cats’ in the Sandown Park line-up for July 18.  The 1969 car was shipped new to the USA, where it was recently restored at a cost of over $164,000. It drives and handles as it would when new, and comes complete with a comprehensive history file dating back to 1969 (£65,000-£85,000).  The 1970 FHC has recently been the subject of a significant amount of work, including a bare metal re-spray, new wiring and full engine re-build. Estimate: £30,000-£45,000.




Another stunning Jaguar comes in the form of the 1959 XK150S, which has been in the same ownership for 50 years.  Less than 200 of this 3.4S FHC XK150S were produced, making it even more appealing to collectors.  Estimate: £50,000-£65,000.


The Ford Capri is a hugely popular car and examples in excellent condition – particularly those representing special; editions – are even more popular. You can’t get much more special than a 1975 black and gold genuine JPS Capri, and the example in Barons’ sale has been restored to concours condition with fantastic attention to detail.  Estimate: £15,000-£20,000.


The rare and handsome 1938 Lagonda LG6 has a memorable chassis number - 12345.  It featured in Autocar magazine’s Used Car Test Report in December 1952 and spent 30 years in the United States from 1966-96.  In recent years it has been the subject of much work and is a beautiful example of a magnificent British motor car.  Estimate:  £80,000-£95,000.


Toyota’s Land Cruiser is another model which has legions of fans. Barons is offering a Capri blue, 1969 FJ40 Land Cruiser which has recently undergone a complete frame-off restoration and is now ready and waiting to be put to work and shown off by its new owner.  Estimate: £18,000-£22,000.

Britain’s Best Bacon Butty Locations Revealed


Britain’s best bacon butties have been revealed, following a month-long hunt.

As part of the nation-wide competition, tradespeople were asked to nominate the butty establishment they feel makes the country’s best bacon sandwich - whether that’s a cafĂ©, restaurant, hotel or roadside van.

JoJo’s Breakfast Bar in Gloucester, Burger Dan’s in Norwich, Sparks Will Fry in Widnes, Giltbrook Cob Shop in Nottingham, Straw Kitchen in Warwickshire, The Kitchen Table in West Hampstead, Ockham Bites in Surrey, the Lunch Box in Kent, Hackney City Farm in London and Castle CafĂ© in Northwich have been crowned the winners of IronmongeryDirect’s Britain’s Best Bacon Butty competition.

After receiving hundreds of entries for the competition, IronmongeryDirect revealed the top 10 establishments across the country, as voted for by tradespeople.

All 10 winners have been placed on to a dedicated Bacon Butty map, which highlights where in the UK tradespeople can get their hands on the best bacon sandwiches. So, wherever they are on a job, hard working tradespeople can make sure they start their day off in the right way with a hearty breakfast.

The competition was launched following recent research by IronmongeryDirect, which found that the classic bacon sandwich is the breakfast of choice for our nation’s tradespeople. A survey of 2,014 workers found that 72% of tradespeople agree the hearty sandwich is their workplace snack of choice.

Every tradesperson who entered a nomination was placed into a prize draw to win one of five £100 Amazon vouchers.

Chris Wardle from Stalybridge, Paul Rainbow from Norfolk, Hally Jones from Northampton, Nigel Chambers from Gloucester and David Cable from Oxford have been named as the lucky winners of the Amazon vouchers.

ACT Vanderbilt Enables Unified Access Control


BDI Security Solutions Ltd has installed access control equipment from ACT Vanderbilt at sites in Burnaston, Derbyshire, and Deeside, North Wales, for car manufacturer Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. 

The project saw ACT Vanderbilt developers create a tailored solution after their closest competitor proved unable to operate from a virtual environment and respond promptly to client requests.

Toyota’s Burnaston production process begins with the pressing of panels from flat steel on presses ranging up to 3,000 tons and proceeds to welding, painting, addition of plastic moulding components and assembly. 

The company uses the ‘kaizen’ continuous improvement method to optimise quality and efficiency through constant incremental changes. At Deeside, Toyota operates a 115-acre engine plant. Together, the two sites represent investment of £2.5bn and employ 3,000 people.

The ACT Vanderbilt installation has replaced a legacy system that was no longer future-proof and did not allow access control listings to be integrated with Toyota’s general corporate database. The client now has a unified solution with badge-printing as an integral and cost-effective element when it had previously been a separate process.


The equipment includes ACTpro Mifare1030 mullion proximity readers at both indoor and outdoor locations. These slim-line readers support third-party smart cards and fobs, feature a robust polycarbonate housing and have an ingress rating of IP67. 

They are particularly suited to this type of project where the smart card is used for multiple applications across access control and HR. In order to maximise use of budget and observe the client’s stringent environmental policy, a number of fit-for-purpose legacy Mifare readers were included in the new system.

Toyota is also using ACT Vanderbilt’s ACTpro eLock MIFARE Classic. This is a wireless door lock that includes an access control reader and opening mechanism, all powered by batteries. eLocks operate with an ACTpro eLock hub and up to 32 locks can communicate over a wireless network with each hub. 

Battery life is exceptional at over 200,000 operations or an estimated three years on a busy door. There are visible and audible alerts for problems with tampering, signal strength and door status. Wireless connectivity is up to 150 metres (line of sight) which is a class-leading range for this type of product. The lock is available with an optional Euro-profile cylinder to provide key override.

Richard Huison of ACT Vanderbilt said: 
“Toyota was able to exploit our import tool which is an additional module in the ACTenterprise management suite. The tool allowed automated integration of human resources software with the access control user database and ACT Vanderbilt proved able to cope with multiple data sources and formats.”
He continued:
 “There was a requirement that our product should be able to work in a virtualised environment since all of Toyota’s servers are virtualised and hosted at a European datacentre. ACT Vanderbilt was able to tick this box as soon as we received the brief. Across both sites, ACT Vanderbilt products have been used on over 200 doors.”

Abloy UK Launches Telecom Security White Paper


Security expert Abloy UK has launched a new White Paper aimed at the telecom industry.

The White Paper - Securing Telecom Networks of the Future - describes the threats and challenges faced by the industry specifically related to tower and site security, and introduces new locking solutions to minimise these risks.

Green Gate Access Systems Celebrate Double Success at Maidstone Business Awards


Green Gate Access Systems had an extremely successful night at the Maidstone Business Awards last Wednesday (14th June). The Kent-based company picked up two awards, winning in both the Innovation and Entrepreneur categories.

In winning the Innovation category, Green Gate clearly demonstrated how to successfully bring a new idea to life – namely the SOSEC solar-powered gate and barrier system. The judging panel said that, of all the entries, Green Gate had most effectively changed its business model and adapted to changes, in order to deliver better products and services.

Neil Sampson, Managing Director of Green Gate Access Systems, was awarded winner of the Entrepreneur category, demonstrating his entrepreneurial flair for achieving commercial success. The award also celebrated Neil’s clear plans and strategies for the growth of his business, and the strong track record of innovation.

Green Gate’s success is particularly notable, given that the awards came exactly a year after a destructive fire destroyed its previous premises and all its possessions.

The awards were judged by Jane Ollis (Chair of IoD Kent), Dawn Beckham (Senior Account Manager at Heart FM Kent), Jacqui Offen (Director of JJ Systems) and Laurie Philp (Producer Director at Smugshot Videos).

Neil Sampson said: “It’s a huge honour to win these two awards, especially as there were so many other deserving entrants within the categories. To win is recognition of the hard work and innovation that Green Gate is putting in to make sustainable security and traffic control solutions.
“I started the business with my wife back in 2006 – initially operating out of a bedroom in the family home. Eleven years later - it’s a fantastic feeling to be recognised for the work that we do and winning these business accolades to prove it. In the twelve months that have passed since the fire, we have worked hard to reverse the damage and grow our business; that makes this a worthy celebration.”

Jacqui Offen, Director at J & J Systems, said: “After 20 years in business, this is a wonderful event to be involved with. The quality of all the candidates was high, but the Green Gate application stood out as an exceptional business – continually developing, working hard on all commercial aspects, business structure, entrepreneurialism, team building and community work. All of this headed by an exceptional leader in Neil: a worthy winner for both categories.”

Green Gate Access Systems developed its SOSEC range of products to answer a growing need to provide public safety and work site security, where power provision is not practical, but security and safety demands are high.

Its mobility, durability and flexibility in a single easy-to-deliver platform made it one of the most talked about products at Traffex 2017, the UK’s leading highways industry event held this month (4 to 6 April) at the NEC, Birmingham. Generosity of Gala Dinner Guests Raises More than £15k For Macmillan

Following an emotional appeal by fundraising veteran Gary Morton,
Gala Dinner guests donated more than £15,000 to Macmillan Nurse

Guests at this year’s FIT Show Gala Dinner have reached into their pockets to raise a massive £15,233.57 following a heart-wrenching appeal for donations to Macmillan Nurses made during the event by Gary Morton, well known for his own charity work through GM Fundraising.

With a call for donations traditionally being made to raise funds for a cause close to the hearts of people connected with the window and door industry, this year Macmillan Nurses was chosen by Leon Day, former owner and managing director of Universal Arches, who sadly lost his partner Jo to cancer earlier this year.

Acknowledging the generosity of guests Leon said:
“It’s difficult to put into words the magnitude of this incredible gesture and with other donations, we’re now over £19,000 raised for Macmillan who did so much to help Jo, particularly in the latter days. On behalf of Jo’s family and myself, I’d like to thank everyone, yet again this industry has shown how generous it can be.” 
The JustGiving page for Jo will remain open for a while yet should anyone else like to contribute to this emotive cause.

dormakaba Provides New Concept Guest Access Solution for Oxford Hotel


When a 16th Century building located in the heart of Oxford was refurbished to create a luxurious and modern hotel, the building required a keyless access system, the hotel’s team specified dormakaba’s Oracode solution.

In doing so, it became the first hotel of its kind in the UK to benefit from a system that could integrate with an online reservation system, making checking in and out easy for guests while at the same time providing the highest levels of security.

Located on St Aldates road, just 50 metres from Carfax Tower in the centre of Oxford, the Museum Hotel Oxford is a luxury hotel dating from 1594. A historic building, the hotel provides ten rooms that have been designed in a contemporary manner, yet highlighting the hotel’s period features.

The team from the Museum Hotel Oxford tasked dormakaba with providing keyless access control that could meet the challenge of integration with its own systems, and the need to provide smart and secure access to the hotel rooms as well as common access doors.


The Oracode web-based keyless access system proved an ideal solution. A secure web based platform, it integrated easily with the hotel’s online reservation system. When guests make a booking they receive a time sensitive pin, with automatic start and expiry dates related to the duration of the guests’ stay, which they can then use to access their rooms. This also allows greater flexibility for hotel staff, allowing for 24/7 unmanned check-in as the remote access means staff can generate codes and email or text them to guests.

The installation of the web-based system also involves little to no intervention with the customer’s existing I.T environments and can be interfaced with Property Management Software (PMS), requiring no investment in on premise software. Additionally, due to the web fee subscription model, the customer has access to technical support if required.

We are the first hotel to offer an almost wholly automated check in service and while our staff very much pride themselves on providing a warm welcome, guests benefit from having the option of being completely independent - allowing greater control and freedom for when they can come and go from the hotel. By integrating this system we have improved the efficiency and security for all guests and staff within the hotel.”

BMW at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed


The UK premiere of the BMW Concept 8 Series will be at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Unveiled at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the concept serves as a taster for the new BMW 8 Series CoupĂ© which launches in 2018. 
 
Also seen in the UK for the first time will be new BMW M4 CS, which will take to the hill for the supercar hillclimb, whilst the Gordon Murray-designed Brabham-BMW BT52 and the Le Mans-winning BMW V12 LMR will steer their way up Goodwood’s famous 1.16-mile course.

The BMW Concept 8 Series will be shown alongside the 19th vehicle of BMW’s Art Car Collection - the BMW M6 GTLM race car - as designed by the American master of conceptual art, John Baldessari. 


Visitors to the festival will be able to see both cars in the Stable Yard, a unique area at Goodwood (once again dedicated to BMW), which will also showcase the new and exclusive BMW i8 MemphisStyle and range-topping M760Li xDrive V12.

Seen in action for the first time in the UK will be a very special model from BMW M - the new high-performance BMW M4 CS. The BMW M4 CS continues a decades-long tradition of successful M special editions which began in 1988 with the E30 BMW M3 Evolution. 

With a host of innovative M technologies and efficient, lightweight carbon fibre components, the new BMW M4 CS can complete the legendary “Nordschleife” in just 7:38 minutes. At the wheel will be the double British Touring Car champion driver Colin Turkington, along with BMW WSR teammates Rob Collard and Andrew Jordan, and one of the UK’s best known television presenters and ex-racing driver, Tiff Needell.


The theme for the 2017 Festival of Speed will be 'Peaks of Performance - Motorsport's Game-Changers'. Leading the charge for BMW will be the Brabham BT52 - the first car to win the Formula 1 title with a turbocharged engine. Designed by legendary BMW engineer Paul Rosche, the BT52’s turbocharged 1.5 litre inline four-cylinder BMW powerplant was capable of producing 1,500bhp in Gordon Murray’s stunning car. At the helm will be legendary F1 driver, Ricardo Patrese. 

Alongside the BT52 will be the BMW V12 LMR, with a 580hp 12-cylinder engine, that celebrated overall victory in the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours – one of the world’s toughest and most exhausting car races, while touring car hero Roberto Ravaglia will drive up Goodwood’s famous hill in a BMW M3 Group A DTM race car.


Motorbike enthusiasts will be treated too, with one of the most exciting bikes ever from BMW Mottorad – the HP4 RACE. The 750 limited-edition handmade racing machine will make its first ever appearance at Goodwood and is the first motorcycle in the world to offer a fully carbon frame and fully carbon wheels. But it’s not just a star bike that can be seen and heard: star riders will be present too, including former World Superbike Champion Troy Corser who will be riding the BMW S1000 RR Seniro TT 2104 up the hill.

Troy, along with drivers and guest stars, will make appearances on the BMW Pavilion throughout the festival, with live interviews broadcast to assembled visitors. On Saturday, legendary Formula 1 commentator Murray Walker will be on stand and will be joined by numerous friends of the brand, including Jodie Kidd - when she’s not driving a BMW i8 up Goodwood’s hill.


Visitors to the BMW Pavilion, the home of the marque during the festival, will also be able to see an unparalleled array of BMW Motorsport GmbH product, including the new BMW M3 and M4 Competition Package models, along with the latest BMW iPerformance models such as the BMW i8, and a rather special BMW i3. They will also be able win prizes and BMW experiences and view an amazing display of 100 scale models. Once again this year, BMW owners will be able to access the exclusive Owners’ Lounge on the top floor terrace of the Pavilion to enjoy refreshments and view of the festival’s famous Hillclimb.


The Goodwood Festival of Speed is being held from 29 June – 2 July 2017, beginning with Press Preview Day and the Moving Motor Show on Thursday 29 June.
