Style Meets Substance at Roehampton

Premium windows and doors manufacturers Black Millwork and Andersen Windows have supplied a range of their products to a stunning new-build development in Roehampton, London, helping developers achieve a high-end aesthetic and guaranteeing strong performance values.

With the average house price in London more than double that of the rest of the country [1], buyers are beginning to expect a higher level of finish when purchasing property in the capital. This was the case at Roehampton, a project that comprised of two homes with a combined value of £11 million. Work on the 12,000 square foot development began in June 2014 and took two years to complete.

For Harepath LLP, the company tasked with leading the project, this meant procuring building materials that provided high-quality performance specifications as well as a luxurious aesthetic. With such an extensive range of windows and doors available, Black Millwork and Andersen Windows were the ideal choice for this installation.

Harepath LLP is a niche property developer operating in South West London. With a combined business experience of over 30 years, the company understands how to guarantee flair, innovation and top quality design and finish to every project.

Speaking on the project, Chris Ackley, Member at Harepath LLP, commented:
“During the last five years we’ve witnessed unprecedented demand for property in London, which has led to a large spike in prices. With people paying more to live in the capital there’s been an increase in expectations. As such it has become paramount to only use premium-building materials.
“Black Millwork and Andersen’s products represent just this, they satisfy the two major criteria: strong performance specs and high-end aesthetics. The company was a pleasure to work with and we’ll be looking to use their products again.”
Across two houses, the developers have installed sets of Andersen 400 series Woodwright sliding sash windows, Andersen French Doors and Black Millwork external doors. The Andersen 400 series is one of the company’s most popular series, providing a blend of performance and style to satisfy the wants and needs of homebuyers in London.

The windows have extremely narrow joining kits between them, which allowed the developers to create a modern design with lots of glass and very slim frames. What’s more, the windows come with self-cleaning glass as standard, keeping the surface free of dirt and grime reducing the need for constant maintenance.

Gary Hutton, General Manager at Black Millwork commented:
“We’ve worked on numerous high-end properties across London but this was very special. The developers have designed two properties, which resonate opulence and class. To see a range of Black Millwork and Andersen’s windows and doors installed is a great fit. We pride ourselves on finding the balance between style and performance and that’s what the modern homebuyer is so desperately searching for.”

Promat UK leads the fire glass market with new quality and environmental standards

Promat UK, one of the country’s leading manufacturers of fire-resistant glazing, plus thermal and acoustic insulation, has become one of the first companies of its kind to successfully move up to the latest ‘2015’ editions of the globally recognised ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management system standards.

This dual standards upgrade gives customers of Promat UK the assurance that products are manufactured to a consistently high standard in processes designed to minimise environmental impact and with excellent supply reliability. These ISO standards, which apply to all activities undertaken at Promat UK’s 66,000 sq. ft. main manufacturing centre and HQ at Heywood in Lancashire, are awarded to companies only when independent assessors are satisfied that their management, operations and all processes meet their strict criteria.

Achieving these new standards is another important differentiator for Promat UK as it works to raise awareness of why there is no margin of error in the design and installation of fire-resistant glass. Their complete fire-rated glazing system, Promat SYSTEMGLAS®, is supported by a RIBA-approved CPD seminar for specifiers and extensive resources for contractors and installers, as well as a campaign to encourage greater understanding of the ‘specified for a reason’ message.

Ian Cowley, General Manager at Promat UK says:
“We’re delighted to become one of the first manufacturers of fire, thermal and acoustic insulation to reach the 2015 ISO standards. The work that goes into achieving these standards is far-reaching and looks at every aspect of our business in detail to ensure we’re doing things in the best way possible.
“Tragic recent events have put the performance of products that are designed to save lives under the spotlight like never before. It is vitally important for specifiers, contractors and installers to eliminate risk, particularly with products like fire resistant glass, and here ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 help make a difference.
“These standards go hand-in-hand, giving our customers peace of mind knowing that independent experts have been through the way we manufacture and supply products with a fine-tooth comb. In combination with our specific product approvals, such as those provided by CERTIFIRE, this means we give our customers a ‘belt and braces’ assurance that our products are right for the application.”

A significant change in the 2015 ISO standards versus previous versions is the involvement of the senior management team in leading and developing systems. This ensures the management systems effectively support the overall business objectives, customer requirements and the competence and development of employees, focusing on managing risk by closely scrutinising and monitoring quality, environmental and health and safety performance.

Promat UK manufactures high performance insulation and reliable passive fire protection in numerous markets, including the door, window and industrial sectors. It manufactures a wide range of products from the company’s portfolio, which includes glass brands such as PYROCET®, PYROSEC® and SMOKESTREAM®, along with its complete glazing solution SYSTEMGLAS®, which is rapidly growing in popularity in the market due to its unique a 360 degree ‘wheel of assurance’ for architects and clients.

Part of international building product manufacturing group the Etex Group, Promat UK has been producing fire, thermal and acoustic protection solutions for more than 30 years. In addition to its range of fire resistant glass, which offers both integrity and insulation (EI) and integrity only (E) solutions, the company manufactures market leading high performance solutions which are used in numerous hi-tech, engineering and industrial sectors. These range from Formula One racing, train rolling stock and aircraft manufacture, to offshore wind turbines, the nuclear industry and white goods.

Tormax select KCC Architectural as their partner and official distributor in the Irish market.

KCC Architectural has partnered with Tormax to bring stunning full glass revolving doors to the markets in both Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Tormax as a name may not be as well known with Irish architects as it is across Europe, but it is far from a newcomer to the market - Tormax installed Europe’s first automatic door in 1951. Today Tormax has grown to become a leading manufacturer of automatic door systems worldwide with 16 Group companies and 500 distributors.

They have selected KCC Architectural as their partner and official distributor in the Irish market which will serve as a valuable addition to the existing Automatics division of KCC Architectural across Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Tormax automatic door systems are found in office buildings, shopping malls, hotels and restaurants, department stores, airports and train stations, on ships and in apartment buildings – in short, in hundreds of thousands of buildings around the world.

In general, revolving doors are the automated entrance of choice in public-serving buildings where footfall is high and therefore a high quality, resilient product is required to withstand heavy usage, and also to allow for effective air or wind control, which can sometimes be an issue with automatic sliding or swing doors.

Dan Kilpatrick, Automatics consultant for KCC Architectural is working with Tormax in Ireland and says:
“What really appealed to us about Tormax is that the product solution can be customised to the project requirements. It fits in with our company ethos – we already provide tailored solutions across our main divisions that encompass everything from design through to installation and aftercare, so when we were looking for a revolving door solution to add to our portfolio, Tormax was the obvious choice.”
While other brands have dominated the revolving door market with architects for many years now on commercial projects, Tormax appears to be emerging as the eagerly anticipated alternative, providing a high quality, cost-effective opponent to other market offerings.

Speaking about the product benefits and features, Dan says:
“Our ambition is to provide streamlined complete solutions to clients, architects and main contractors alike, which we are able to do thanks to our wide product range and wealth of experience across all sectors. We can take a simple commercial building sketch, for example, and provide a full technical submittal with all certification and back up documentation for automatics, fire glazing, steel doors, riser door systems, access control systems, movable walls, partitions, signage, door hardware and ironmongery.
“We also offer full service and maintenance support even after the project has been handed over to the client. We looked at numerous options before deciding on the Tormax brand. After careful research, we identified Tormax as being one of the main players in the European revolving door market, and knew it was the right fit for our portfolio.”
In line with modern architectural design preferences for extremely minimalistic profiles, Tormax offers a ‘Light frame’ or ‘Full glass’ revolving door solution, whereby the drive/motor is concealed in the floor, in addition to the more traditional design with the motor in the canopy. The full glass model is particularly eye-catching as it operates without a centre column, offering complete transparency. The inclusion of iMotion drive technology allows for smooth acceleration and braking of the door leaves without any jolts.
“We are so confident with the high quality of product and technical support provided by Tormax that we are prepared to offer 2 years aftercare support and a 5 year motor warranty through our own service division across Ireland and Northern Ireland”, says John O’Gorman, Associate Director and head of Automatics in the Leinster region.

When asked about his expectations for Tormax, John says “We are well known for our automatics division and the addition of Tormax to our portfolio paired with the peace of mind that you’re still dealing with KCC, will be welcomed by existing and new clients alike.”
KCC Architectural’s team in Ireland and Northern Ireland can assist with construction projects from initial design stage straight through to on-site installation. They are well known for their multi-divisional, ‘full package’ solutions and their efforts to simplify the lives of architects, contractors and designers through continuous product and service innovations and developments.

Step on it, mate!’ Hot Hatch Cabbie Brings Smiles to Locals and Tourists on Norway’s Frozen Roads

A taxi driver in Norway has a less-than-conventional approach to his car of choice for work – A Ford Focus RS.

Whereas larger, more fuel-efficient Ford models are the vehicle of choice for some UK private hire companies, Evald Jåstad has clocked up an impressive 127,000 kms (79,000 miles) in just 18 months in, arguably, the most popular taxi in Norway.

The first job of the day for cabbie, Evald, is a 16-kilometre round-trip from Odda through breathtaking Scandinavian scenery to take his son to nursery before locals and tourists call on him to take them across the Trolltunga cliffs, in style.

Regulars have nicknamed the car “Blue Lightning” thanks to the Focus RS’s 350PS, 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine.

“There are not many people who can say they live their dream. But I am definitely one of them,” says the 36-year-old father of two. “When I drive him to nursery, all the way there, Martin shouts out ‘Bånn gass! Bånn gass! – More gas! More gas!”

But how does it compare to your typical London taxi?

Retentions: has the construction industry had enough following the Carillion disaster?

In this article Jonathan Hyndman, Partner at Rosling King, takes a close look at the subject of construction industry retentions following the Carillion disaster.

The use of cash retentions is common place in the construction industry. Some £3 billion of retentions remain outstanding in the UK construction industry at any one time. With the collapse of Carillion, however, has the industry had enough?

By deducting and retaining a percentage of the value of the works from interim payments due to the contractor during the construction phase, developers can be seen to enjoy an element of protection against late completion and defects arising during the rectification period. Similarly, main contractors will deduct and retain a percentage from each interim payment due to their subcontractors again, to be released when the subcontract works have been completed and when the subcontractor has made good any defects.

Widespread and persistent failures to release retentions on time or at all, whether as a result of simple breach of contract or the insolvency of the party holding the retention, has encouraged contractors at all levels of the supply chain to price the risk of their retention not being released into the contract sum.

Reform of retentions in construction contracts has long been called for and The Construction (Retention Deposit Schemes) Bill, introduced as a Private Members’ Bill, received its first reading in the House of Commons on 9 January 2018; the Bill’s second reading is scheduled for 27 April 2018. Carillon’s collapse has brought the importance of the proposed legislation sharply into focus.

The intention behind the Bill is the introduction of secondary legislation requiring cash retentions to be paid into a Government approved scheme and so ring fencing them from the other assets of the party holding the retention; the party to whom the retention is due will still be incentivised to complete on time and remedy defects but in the event of the retention holder’s insolvency, the cash retention, held in a Government approved scheme, would fall outside the insolvency process and would be available for downstream release before any creditor distribution.

The proposals have met with widespread support through the construction industry with the statutory deposit scheme required in relation to deposits paid by tenants of shorthold tenancies to landlords being cited as a working example.

Reform of retentions is overdue and welcomed. The intended protection of retentions against upstream insolvency in the construction industry will unfortunately come too late for Carrilion’s sub-contractors and suppliers.

Dedication and Passion Rewarded at Passive Fire Protection Awards

The British Woodworking Federation’s Hannah Mansell is the first Passive Fire Protection Advocate of the Year.

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection’s Passive Fire Protection Awards has rewarded the dedication and passion of Hannah Mansell, Technical Manager of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and Manager of the BWF-Certifire Scheme, with the title of Passive Fire Protection (PFP) Advocate of the Year 2017.

Judged by Association’s Strategy Group, the new award is to celebrate an individual who is a major advocate of high quality installed PFP and has proactively helped raise awareness, educate and promote the benefits of the essential safety methods.

The spokesperson for Fire Door Safety Week as well as the chairman of the Passive Fire Protection Forum, Hannah has been passionate about raising awareness of fire protection methods for nearly four years. Over the last 12 months, she has regularly featured in national, regional and trade media highlighting the essential role of fire doors in saving lives and protecting properties in the event of a fire.

Also embedding her enthusiasm within her personal life, Hannah is a trustee of the Children’s Burns Trust and regularly organises fundraising events, such as BWF-Certifire seminars, to raise donations for the charity.

Niall Rowan, Chief Operations Officer of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection, said:

“The Association for Specialist Fire Protection’s new Passive Fire Protection Awards aim to highlight excellence in passive fire protection and to reward those who contribute to the advancement of awareness, quality and education within the sector.
“We were pleased to announce Hannah Mansell as ASFP Passive Fire Protection Advocate of the Year 2017 in recognition of her enthusiastic promotion of fire doors as critical life safety products. Hannah has made fire doors her passion and has passed on this dedication to so many others through a wide range of activities including a huge number of presentations at conferences and exhibitions throughout 2017 and her tireless support of Fire Door Safety Week.
“We welcome her continued support for the ASFP and look forward to continuing our work together during 2018.”

Hannah Mansell, Technical Manager at the BWF, said:
“I’m really humbled to have won this award – and I’d like to share it with all of the organisations and people that have supported and inspired me to ask awkward questions of fire safety in this country.
“Being able to work with fire safety experts and with local communities, such as the Balmoral Residents Association, to raise awareness and help educate people on the crucial role of fire doors and other methods of PFP, is an extremely rewarding experience.
“As we enter in 2018, with the Hackitt Review and Grenfell Inquiry expected to bring real changes to both the Building Regulations and fire safety regulations, we need to continue promoting the importance and benefits of PFP to the Government, building managers and members of the public.”

BID Group keeps a Midlands Bakery Toasty with a new Insulated Roller Shutter Door

BID Group provided a Midlands Bakery with a new Roller Shutter Door to keep the workplace toasty!

Providing a comfortable and safe working environment is a must for every business owner. But the opening and closing of external doorways is unpreventable in warehouses and every time this happens warm air escapes and cold air enters.

Mathew Wardle, Regional Account Manager for BID Group Midlands said:
“It was clear to the client, following a site survey that a new door was the best option to provide a safe, energy saving solution.”
The Customer added: “We found BID Group very professional in both their attitude and work, from Mathew’s initial site survey through to the installation team. The new door fitting was completed to our total satisfaction and the factory and our energy bill are benefitting from the result.”

BID Group believe in providing products that are manufactured to the highest quality. Their Roller Shutter Doors are no different and that is why they are easy to operate, robust, fully galvanised, operated via a direct drive and manufactured at their in-house production facility.

Roller Shutter Doors are available in all sizes with manual or electric operation. Electric operated roller shutter doors can be fitted with any one or a combination of actuation or safety devices to suit the environment that they are operating in.

Compliant Care Home Access Control from Abloy

Security expert Abloy UK has supplied Crediton Care & Support Homes Ltd (CCSH) with a compliant electric locking solution for Kite House, a new care facility in Crediton, Devon.

CCSH specialise in providing residential care for people with Autism, Aspergers, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Issues. Barn conversion, Kite House is the newest of its facilities, offering a full range of residential, day-care and domiciliary services.

Exeter-based Guardian Security handles all the security needs of CCSH, and was responsible for selecting the best solution to fit the requirements of Kite House.

Specialists in access control, Guardian Security created a bespoke security solution, specifying seven Abloy solenoid electric locks to work in conjunction with the existing access control system.

One of the key requirements for Kite House was the ability to lock down the facilities at any given point, and isolate areas such as the kitchen and quiet rooms if needed.

They also wanted the facility to feel more like a home and less like a hospital, to make patients feel comfortable and relaxed in their surroundings.

Abloy EL560, EL460, and EL561 locks were recommended for use in the doors of high-traffic buildings because they can withstand the heavy usage that comes from many people using the door for access daily, making them ideal for this installation.

Only the outside handle is electrically controlled, and the lock can always be opened by inside handle for easy egress. Mechanical opening by cylinder is always possible too, and the EL560, EL460, and EL561 locks are also compliant with EN179 and EN1125 Fire and Escape standards.

Sean Monger of Guardian Security, commented:
“For Kite House we had quite specific requirements when it came to access control. The locking solutions didn’t just need to be functional - they also had to be durable and of the highest quality.
“Abloy was the first choice, as its locks offered the highest quality and reliability, were able to withstand physical strength, and they also conform to regulations and compliance.
James Moore of CCSH, added:
“The works that were undertaken were done to a high standard and they have been helpful in responding to any enquiries that we have had.”

“Your Installer Membership costs too much” – It is understandable that their monthly subscription of £99.99 (inc VAT) per month is a lot of money. However, Installer Members do get a free course worth £540 (inc VAT). In addition, their subscription hasn’t changed since they launched in 2013 but their benefits have grown. The association also offers Installer members a discount if they pay for an annual subscription.

“Your BS EN16005 training costs too much” – The BS EN16005 training costs are based on the administration fees (including City & Guilds and CSCS), training pack materials which include a free copy of the BS EN16005 (worth £238.00), Trainer fees, venue hire which includes lunch for candidates, CSCS cards, ADIA/DoorSafe lanyards, certificates and more.

The cards a renewable annually (for four years) for free, have the City & Guilds and CSCS logos and your company/trained engineers are promoted until the accreditation has expired. Refresher courses are £250 (inc. VAT) once the four-year expiry is reached.

“I’m already a member of another association” – The ADIA are more than happy to accept companies who are members of multiple associations. Although, they do appreciate this can become costly. But if you would like to see the difference in what is on offer, you can see a full list of benefits here.

You can join the ADIA by completing one of these forms. Please ensure that if you have more than one employee for your company that you fill in the Installer Membership application. they assess each application individually.

Defender Lives On: Land Rover Launches V8 Edition to Celebrate 70th Anniversary

Land Rover today announces a limited-edition high-performance version of the iconic Defender, with up to 150 V8-powered examples re-engineered to celebrate the Land Rover marque’s 70th anniversary in 2018.

The Defender Works V8 pays homage to the early high-powered engines in both the Series III Stage 1 V8 from 1979 and subsequent Defenders including the 50th Anniversary Edition, which are highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors today.

Defender Works V8 is the most powerful and fastest version that Land Rover has ever created. The 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol V8 powertrain produces 405PS and 515 Nm of torque (the standard Defender delivered 122PS and 360 Nm). The Defender Works V8 will accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.6sec*, while top speed is increased to 106mph.

Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic Director, said:
“It’s fitting that we’ve been able to release the full potential of the iconic Defender, whose much-loved shape remains synonymous with Land Rover, 70 years since it was seen in public for the first time.
“The idea of reintroducing a V8 Defender was something we were discussing as far back as 2014, when we were still building the Defender in Solihull. We knew the demand was there for a powerful and fast Defender; the Land Rover authenticity is the ultimate finishing touch for discerning clients purchasing these collector’s edition Defenders.”

The V8 powertrain will be fitted to 150 specially-selected and re-engineered Defenders for the 70th Edition, complemented by an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with sport mode, uprated brakes and handling kit (springs, dampers and anti-roll bars), plus exclusive 18-inch diamond-turned Sawtooth alloy wheels and 265/65 R18 all-terrain tyres.

Eight standard body colours include two satin finishes – contrasting with a Santorini Black roof, wheel arches and front grille – finished with machined aluminium door handles, fuel filler cap and Defender bonnet lettering. A comprehensive lighting upgrade includes bi-LED headlamps.

Full Windsor Leather interior trim covers the dashboard, door panels, headlining and Recaro sports seats. Land Rover Classic’s own Classic Infotainment System is also fitted.

Both 90 and 110 wheelbase Defender Works V8 derivatives will be available to purchase direct from Land Rover Classic, with prices starting from £150,000 for a 90 in the UK.

A select number of high-performance upgrades inspired by Defender Works V8 will also be available to purchase soon from Land Rover Classic, including power upgrades for the TDCi diesel engine, fast-road suspension and braking kits.

Land Rover intends to continue the Defender lineage and will use its technology, pioneering engineering capability and design expertise to ensure the longevity of the Defender name. The all-new Defender is subject to further announcements.

All enquiries from prospective Defender Works V8 clients should be directed to Land Rover Classic: info@classic.landrover.co.uk / +44 (0) 203 601 1255
