Unique 1950 Ferrari 166MM/212 Export ‘Uovo’ to star in the 2024 Salon Privé Concours

A unique 1950 Ferrari 166MM/212 Export ‘Uovo’ will be a headline attraction at this summer’s Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients at Blenheim Palace, 28-29 August.

‘Uovo’ is Italian for ‘egg’, perfectly describing this futuristic car’s attention-grabbing design and presence at the UK’s most exclusive automotive garden party, which will cause a stir.

Described as one of the most famous Ferraris ever built, it was created by a young and enthusiastic team as an ultra-aerodynamic one-off designed to perform better in high-speed road races such as the Mille Miglia.

Racing driver Giannino Marzotto (a two-time Mille Miglia winner) was the driving force behind ‘Uovo’.

He admired Ferrari’s V12 engines but was certain that improved aerodynamics could unlock even more performance.

So, with his brother Vittorio, he ordered two Ferrari 212 Export chassis to be delivered with engines and running gear but without bodywork.

He discussed his ideas with coachbuilder Paolo Fontana plus talented young engineer and designer Franco Reggiani.

The idea for a sleek, low and rounded coupé, backed up by a very rigid frame to ensure the suspension could work without undue disturbance from rough roads, started to take shape.

Reggiani, who had worked in the aeronautical industry during the war, was eager to achieve a lightweight car of a beautiful shape, with a steeply reclined windscreen and a rounded, tapered profile.

Despite being incredibly difficult to work with, he crafted the bodywork using ‘Peraluman’, a lightweight aluminium alloy incorporating magnesium.

Reggiani designed a low nose, a narrow body to slip through the air and pronounced and rounded front and rear wings framing a slim cockpit.

Uniquely, instead of traditional A-pillars, the car had braided steel cables that held the roof in place, while the windscreen was shallow (and made from Perspex rather than glass).

He also positioned the driver’s seat towards the rear of the car, following guidance from Enzo Ferrari, saying that sitting towards the rear helps the driver have a better perfection of oversteer.

Although Marzotto had ordered 212 Export chassis, they were late arriving, so they used an existing 166 MM Touring Barchetta chassis.

When the two 212 Exports finally arrived, the engine was removed from one of them to be fitted in the new car.

It was based on the original 1.5-litre V12 Ferrari but now had a capacity of 2.6 litres and produced 190bhp.

A vital feature of the Uovo was its extra-large fuel tank, configured for long-distance road races, which allowed the driver to cover more than 300 miles between stops.

This was a critical factor in the Uovo's success in the 1951 Mille Miglia and its breakthrough victory at the 1951 Coppa della Toscana.

It then scored a memorable victory in the 1952 Trento-Bondone, driven by Giulio Cabianca.

It subsequently spent a few years racing in North America before being retired into a private collection.

This unique car appeared as one of the marque's legends at Ferrari’s 50th-anniversary celebrations at the Museo Enzo Ferrari in 1997, but ‘Uovo’ remains a Concours rarity, so the 2024 Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients provides a rare opportunity to inspect this car up close.

ASWS flies to the rescue for a leading Scottish Hotel

The conversion of a former warehouse property in the heart of Glasgow into a leading hotel required the speedy intervention of a steel door specialist, with London-based Associated Steel Window Services (ASWS) subsequently flying one of its teams up to Prestwick to carry out the required work.

The building’s imposing red sandstone frontage is dominated by a trio of arched headed openings, which were to be a key feature of the refurbished element to a much larger and very stylish new destination on the famous Clyde Street.

Unfortunately, despite the city’s association with shipbuilding and engineering generally, the main contractor could not identify a company North of the border, capable of meeting the technical and time demands of the project.

The Contract Director for ASWS, Kris Bennell, commented:

“The creation of this landmark hotel involved the construction of a new building alongside the refurbishment and conversion of the original stone structure with which we became involved.

“These were very large and extremely heavy steel doors and fixed lights which required a lot of work – and though the client could probably have replaced them with alternatives, they wanted to stay faithful to the heritage of the building and its architectural style.

“After I originally flew up to Glasgow, as a specialist contractor could not be found locally, and our tender was accepted, we sent a whole team up there on the plane while two other operatives drove vans up with all the necessary equipment.

“The three doors, frames and subframes were then demounted and prepped ready to be transported back to our London premises so restoration could be carried out.”


This process with the frames being deglazed and then grit-blasted back to bare metal, ready for repairs, involved some replacement of heavily corroded sections.

The bottom rails had been almost completely eaten away through resting on the stone paving without any weathering detail. Some of the corroded T-bars were also replaced using stock sections.

An anomaly to the original design or installation was the presence of a substantial, but intrusive and badly deteriorated, timber subframe to all of the three frames, which the project team wanted to have substituted by a tubular section insulated aluminium frame; in order to create a thermal as well as visual uplift.

Designed in-house by ASWS engineers, this was made up in several straight and templated curved sections which were bolted together on site and set back into the stone reveal for the doorframe to be fixed to.

Kris Bennell continued:
“The centre double door had originally featured a central ‘slamming bar’.

“However, in order to facilitate the double doors being converted to two individual entrance doors the slamming bar had been cut out disposed of and the doors inverted at some time.

“As the doors required rehanging as one double door we ended up having a complete new sub-frame fabricated and fitted and the repaired original opening leaves were rehung into it.

“Primed in the workshops, the three assemblies were finished in-situ while the main door was fitted with new ironmongery and an electronic closing mechanism.

“Despite this just involving three openings, due to the condition and the logistics of the location for us, it turned out to be a demanding contract.”

The original 10mm plate glass was replaced by a similar thickness of toughened glass to protect building users, while new solid steel beading was mitred, drilled and taped for its retention.

In addition, the solid steel bead had to be cut and curved to match the shape of the main semi headed frame.

ASWS is a long-established member of the Steel Window Association and well recognised expert in the repair of metal windows, from the earliest wrought iron examples through to contemporary curtain walling.

The family run business is frequently called upon to prepare condition surveys during the appraisal stages of a project, which then become part of the planning or listed building permission process.

The company also maintains a very large stock of ironmongery and metal frame components to assist in its restoration work.

CGT Security Launches a New Industrial Door with Amazing Thermal Performance

Following the launch of the Intimidator Industrial door range at the end of 2023, CGT Security is now launching the Intimidator IR-X thermal industrial door, which offers amazing insulation properties due to a combination of innovative product features.

The Intimidator IR-X's patented thermal break technology removes the cold bridge through the joints between the laths, giving it a higher thermal performance than standard insulated shutters. 


The U value is traditionally stated as a through-lath metric, but on a standard shutter, much of the heat transfer is actually through the joint between the laths. The thermal break technology of the IR-X reduces the overall temperature transfer by removing the cold bridge through the joint and having a soft PVC lip between the laths for even greater insulation.

In addition, the curtain of the shutter has an integral rubber top seal for a reduction in airflow between the frame and door, and the guide rails have internal brush seals to give even greater insulation. This gives an overall U value for the whole curtain as 2.8W/ m²K compared to a typical insulated shutter U value of 4.3 W/m²K.

These two-part guide rails also provide extra reinforcement for high wind loading and additional strength on the shutter's attack face.


The Intimidator IR-X has been independently certified by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) to LPS 1175 Issue 8 standard up to a B3 (SR2) rating and has Secured by Design Police Preferred Accreditation.

Each lath of the Intimidator IR-X is made from a twin material: an aluminium outer and a soft PVC finish on the curtain wall, which gives quieter door rolling, even at high speeds. The curved shape of the laths ensures a more intelligent shutter roll, reducing the space required in the head box area.

The combination of these smart product features produces a secure, high-speed industrial door with superb acoustic performance and thermal excellence, making it especially suitable for production facilities, utility buildings, logistics depots, and warehouses where low noise levels and good insulation are important.
