Still working on water

A pair of FAAC 400 swing gate operators are still operating perfectly with minimal maintenance, 15 years after they were installed to automate a set of wooden gates on a boathouse on the River Thames.

Premier Gate Automation Ltd was asked to automate the boathouse gates so that they opened outwards onto the river. The FAAC 400SB long stroke hydraulic operator was specified to handle the reverse geometry and has the power to operate against water. An electro-magnetic lock holds the doors closed and a radio control transmitter is used by the owner to open the gates as the boat approaches.

“This was one of our more unusual installations and posed some unique challenges. The main one being that we were working over water so we had to be very careful not to drop anything! The fact that the FAAC operators are still going strong after 15 years is testimony to their reliability and endurance”, said Rob Warren, Company Director at Premier Gate Automation Ltd.

Ideal for large residential and industrial applications, the FAAC 400 range offers eight different types of operator to suit a variety of installations and can move gates up to 7 metres in length. The units have anti-crushing protection and are available with or without internal hydraulic locking systems.

With more than 40 years’ experience, FAAC is a world leader in gate and door automation. The company has manufacturing and development facilities in Italy and Ireland and distributes its products in more than 90 countries. Within the UK, FAAC (UK) based in Basingstoke is the market leader in both residential and commercial markets, which it serves through a national network of 800 approved installers, all trained to FAAC’s high standards.

ARGE FORGES ALLIANCE WITH E.D.S.F.

The European Federation of Associations of Locks and Builders Hardware Manufacturers (ARGE) and the European Door and Shutter Federation e.V. (E.D.S.F.) will be working closely together in the future.

Both European associations will from now onwards be supporting each other in their activities. A Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to this effect was signed in mid May 2012.

Following this MoC between E.D.S.F. and ARGE the associations will strengthen relations in technical and selected marketing related matters and activities. A priority is a common strategy regarding European Harmonisation and thus benefits members of both associations.

The E.D.S.F. is the umbrella organisation for Europe´s associations and manufacturers of doors, gates, shutters and components (drive systems). Founded in 1985 and based in the town of Hagen, Germany, E.D.S.F. was the main leader in development of EN 13241-1 – Product Standard for Doors. The federation now has 17 members from ten EU-countries with a growing network.

Founded in 1956 ARGE is the European umbrella association of locks and hardware manufacturers. It represents 15 National Associations within Europe, which serve of over 200 manufacturers. ARGE works on technical issues for the European Committee of Standardisation (C.E.N.).

ARGE is a Lobby institution with links to the European Authorities and Institutes. It aims to represent the interests of its National Associations, manufacturers and users of locks and hardware. With ARGEs and E.D.S.F. pan-European presence, both associations will be taken as an equivalent information platform for the European Commission.

Joachim Kieker, General Secretary of ARGE states:
“After years of a good relation between both associations the cooperation with E.D.S.F. is a logical step due to common topics and visions”.

Cooperative activities will include:
-    Standardisation and technical issues (e.g. interpretation upcoming product standard “Fire & Smoke” – prEN 16034),
-    Marketing & PR activities (e.g. acting at common trade fairs),
-    Sustainability issues (e.g. promotion of the sustainable impact of their products),  and
-    Market Surveillance (e.g. avoiding trademark piracy).

Christian Grabitz, General Secretary E.D.S.F., points out: “All common activities are to strengthen the voice of the door and hardware industry on EU-level to all market players and EU-representatives.”

ONE SIZE FITS ALL?

Door closer specialist Astra is calling on the door and hardware industry and the architects that specify them to take a more realistic approach to selecting and sizing door closers. The company believes that the universal adherence to selecting a size 3 closer, regardless of the size of the door and the real life situation, not only stifles innovation it also means that many doors are not actually complying with UK Building Regulations.

It has long been accepted wisdom that size 3 door closers are the only option for doors which are to comply with the UK’s Equality Act, BS 8300 and Approved Document M. But Astra is arguing for a more practical and versatile approach which actually works in real life scenarios.

“While all the torque force calculations currently accepted by purists being carried out on one metre wide doors, those of us working in the field know that the outcome of using a size three closer on a narrower door of 750mm for example, is very different,” argues Astra’s Philip Gallagher. “It can result in a door that is very difficult to open, especially if it is not opened at the leading edge as is so often the case when people are struggling with shopping, buggies, wheelchairs or walking aids.”

A size 3 closer exerts an opening force of 30N on a metre wide door, but on 750mm door that increases to 40N on the leading edge. In many cases it is nigh on impossible to achieve reasonable opening forces using a size 3 closer on a narrower door and a much more sensible – and compliant – option would be to use a correctly adjusted size 1 or 2 closer.

EN1154 Annexe A – the standard so often quoted in UK specifications –is actually not referenced at all in UK Building Regulations.  “It seems that in the UK we have adopted a European standard which simply does not suit our domestic market,” says Philip Gallagher. “It is time to take a sensible approach and fit closer that actually achieve the desired results on a consistent basis.”

Astra is well known for its door closer range including the popular Gibraltar range. The Lancashire-based company can demonstrate many years experience in the sector and carries out all of its own R&D in-house. It exports its British door closers all across the globe via a network of distributors and partner companies.

JOIN THE REPLACEMENT REVOLUTION WITH YALE’S NEW DOORMASTER™ RANGE OF MULTIPOINT LOCKS

Home security specialist Yale has introduced a revolutionary new range of Doormaster™ replacement multipoint locks, designed to help installers offer something different and take early advantage of this growing market.

Multipoint locks are fitted to 80% of all new external residential doors and many older multipoint locks are reaching the end of their lifecycle. Over the coming months and years, growing numbers of multipoint locks are expected to fail, with over one million expected to require replacement in 2012.

The new Yale Doormaster™ range represents a genuine ‘one visit, one repair’ solution, thanks to a cleverly designed, compact range of replacement locks, replacement gearboxes and “overnight” locks.

All Doormaster™ replacement multipoint locks are based on the latest Yale High Security YS170 product platform and enable installers to instantly replace the multipoint locks in virtually all PVCu, composite and timber doors with just six product variants.

The range includes a Professional series, developed with professional door experts in mind, which includes three croppable replacement locks, offering a high security solution for virtually all multipoint locks with multiple hooks or deadbolts and 35mm or 45mm backsets, whether in PVCu, timber or composite doors.

To address gearbox failure, the Doormaster™ range also includes replacement gearboxes covering most of the market. Finally, for emergency installations where a temporary solution is required, installers can choose from seven ‘overnight’ locks, which will quickly and economically secure 90% of doors.

The Yale Doormaster™ range also includes two versatile Universal replacement multipoint locks, offering a one hook, two roller and two mushroom roller solution for PVCu doors with 35mm or 45mm backset locks. Quick and easy to install, Universal locks are supplied complete with a pre-assembled one piece keep and all fixings

The final Doormaster™ replacement lock is the easy-fitting Adjustable replacement lock, which offers a high security solution for around 90% of PVCu doors with multiple hooks or dead bolts, without the need for cutting.

Both the Professional and Adjustable replacement multipoint locks are tested to the Police Approved Secured By Design standard and are PAS 24 doorset capable.

Plus, the keeps on all Doormaster™ replacement locks and Overnight locks feature the patented Uni-packer™ system pre-assembled along their length. This market leading innovation will fit all PVCu profiles and makes keep installation extremely straightforward, eliminating the need for loose plastic packers.

Jon Walker of Yale Door & Window Solutions said: “In the current competitive window and door market, installers need to offer something different to add that competitive edge. Yale’s Doormaster™ range provides a new business opportunity in a growth market, with increasing numbers of multipoint locks expected to fail as they reach the end of their lifecycle.

“The Doormaster™ range offers a genuine ‘one call, one repair’ solution, regardless of whether installers have switched profile or hardware supplier over the years. The whole range of multipoint locks, gearboxes and “overnight locks” - in fact everything the installer needs - has been compressed into just 22 product lines!

“The range includes replacements for virtually all existing multipoint locks, which means door installers can offer a swift solution to householders in the event of lock failure or they can proactively target existing customers to sell a replacement multipoint lock installation as a preventive measure.”

UNION SECURES BIG BROTHER CONTRACT FOR SECOND YEAR

UNION has, yet again, been specified to secure the UK's most famous housemates.

Having moved to Channel 5, the well-known show, enjoyed ratings of over 10 million during its peak and its success and longevity has been a global phenomenon.

Despite all of the hullaballoo that surrounds the show, the fact remains that up to 16 people share the house at any one time, providing some unique safety and security considerations.

Particularly important are exit devices. The specification for this year's Big Brother house included UNION's 8070 Emergency Turn and Dome, which was used on all of the house's fire exit doors.

The Emergency Turn and Dome is supplied with green and white self-adhesive vinyl signage and fixing screws. In the event of an emergency, access to the turn lever is gained by breaking the clear plastic dome cover.

Pauline Richardson, Product Manager for UNION, commented:

"The primary function of the 8070 is to allow people to access an escape route quickly and safely in the event of an emergency.

"Having supplied product for the house last year, it is testament to the product's functionality and reliability that it has yet again been used on such an unusual and high profile application."

UNION supplies an extensive range of locks and architectural hardware for use in many applications via professional locksmiths and ironmongers. UNION is part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door opening solutions.

Second Gate Safety Conference to educate the Industry

It was whilst planning the first gate safety conference in June 2010 that ASO became aware of just how real the danger of un-safe design & installation of gates can be.

“I re-call at the time discussing the creation of a schedule for our first safety conference with our UK partner company Easygates, it was then that we heard the tragic news that a young child had been crushed to death by a gate” said Andy Holz of ASO. The result of this tragic incident (and then a near identical fatal accident one week later) instantly changed views within the industry and lead to a completely new approach to the first safety conference’s inception and content. “We found ourselves presented with a huge challenge, to provide balanced and impartial information on legislation and BS-EN standards whilst also giving the attendee’s vital information to help instantly improve safety levels within the industry” said Holz.

In October 2010 the inaugural GSC (Gate Safety Conference) was hosted in the Midlands , the event was a great success with over 230 attendee’s from 150 separate companies all eager to gain as much information & safety knowledge from the event as possible. With the feedback gained from this event it was clear that the Industry required more focused guidance and a representative body to carry things forward.

In the months that followed the successful creation of a “Powered Gate Group” within the Industry body Door and Hardware Federation (DHF ) has served to provide the required platform. The focus group has worked hard to create and launch the HSE endorsed “Guide to gate safety” which is now downloadable directly from the DHF’s website and will be distributed to the industry in the coming months.

This coupled with the excellent work of the affiliated initiative Gate Safe (Also created in 2010 by Jacksons Fencing) who have designed and launched a CPD for specification, only goes to show how the Industry can and is moving forward.

ASO has now decided to organise a second Gate Safety Conference.

With so many questions having been raised regarding industry standards, legislation and the HSE`s involvement we feel it is our duty to update you. With presentations from the DHF, HSE and Gate Safe along with an in depth analysis and breakdown of the “guide to gate safety” the conference is an essential event for those wishing to ensure the safe and prosperous future of their business and the Industry as a whole.

Date: June 27th 2012

Where: Solihull, West Midlands

Registration:  You can register online at http://www.gate-safety-conference.com

HSE-endorsed powered gate safety guide published by DHF

A comprehensive guide to powered gate safety has been published by the Door & Hardware Federation with the backing of the Health & Safety Executive.

The guide informs all those within the industry on the legislation, standards and guidelines that need to be followed to ensure every gate installation is safe. It is available from www.dhfonline.org.uk .

Its publication follows recent fatal accidents that have involved powered automatic gates. The DHF rose to the challenge of providing an independent platform for the industry to drive up levels of safety in gate manufacture and installation by forming a specialist powered gates group. This now represents the leading UK manufacturers, suppliers, and installers of powered perimeter gates.

The DHF Guide to Gate Safety Legislation and Standards is the first guidance publication to be issued by the group and has been adopted as best practice technical guidance by Gate Safe, the industry-led campaign to improve automated gate safety. It will be followed by the establishment of further safety standard in 2013.

Said Andy Holz, chairman of the DHF powered gate group: “The DHF has long experience in setting safety standards for automated doors in other industry sectors, such as powered garage doors. Much of that technical expertise is transferrable to the powered gate sector.

“This means that powered gate manufacturers and installers can tap into a rich source of technical knowledge and practical information on compliance with safety legislation. Our new DHF Guide to Gate Safety Legislation and Standards will help ensure every current and future gate installation in the UK can be made safe and comply with the law and that the risk of death or injury due to inadequate manufacturing and installation will be dramatically reduced.”

Nick Ratty, the head of HSE’s services, transport and safety unit, said: “The Health and Safety Executive was consulted in the production of this publication and endorses the sensible advice to installers on managing the risks from powered gates set out in the guidance.”

The guide summarises the current legislation and standards which will help gate providers, installers and property and building professionals to fully understand how to meet their safety obligations. It lists all the standards which contain requirements for various aspects of powered gate performance and design. It also makes recommendations on current safety solutions which go beyond the obligations in the currently published standards.

NO POWER.... NO PROBLEM WITH AN X-BOX

Sommer UK have reported growing interest and enquiries for its Aperto X-BOX garage door operator.

The operator works independently of mains electricity meaning it's perfect for a garage that is away from the main residence in an outbuilding or in a row of communal garages.

The operator is powered by an X-BOX battery pack mounted onto a bracket on the garage wall. Due to energy-saving technology the unit can be operated for weeks without the need for recharging, but when the time comes, it's extremely simple.

The X-BOX will give an acoustic and visual signal that it needs recharging and the homeowner simply lifts the X-BOX off the wall-bracket and plugs it into any standard household socket to charge. The operator will continue to work while the batteries are being charged and Sommer include two X-BOX battery units as standard.

Read the full feature and request a brochure online .

Honest John website users vote ŠKODA Yeti number one crossover

ŠKODA’s all-conquering Yeti has once again showed just how desirable it is, scooping two trophies at this year’s awards from respected motoring website HonestJohn.co.uk.

The honours are unique in that they aren’t handed out by a panel of judges. Instead, the decision-makers are the best experts of all – the website’s users – who reward models which are most searched for and viewed.

The ŠKODA Yeti topped the Crossover category, a remarkable feat considering the SUV did exactly the same last year. The popular crossover was also on the shortlist of five models for the prestigious ‘Car of the Year’ title.

Satisfied Yeti drivers led to the car receiving its second honour.
HonestJohn.co.uk has an ‘Owners’ Reviews’ section, and with the Yeti gathering the highest scores of any model listed, it secured this year’s ‘Most Rated’ award.

HonestJohn.co.uk Editor Daniel Harrison, commented, “The Yeti has cemented its place as a firm favourite with our website users. To win the ‘Most Rated’ award demonstrates just how taken owners are with the car. We love the Yeti and our readers do too.”

The data used to calculate the awards is taken from Google Analytics. It calculates the number of page views each car review has had from April 2011 to April 2012. HonestJohn.co.uk gets around 1.5 million visits every month, with the majority of users reading reviews in the ‘Car-by-Car’ section of the site.

Alasdair Stewart, Brand Director, ŠKODA UK, was delighted with the Yeti’s performance and the awards. He commented, “The Yeti embraces ŠKODA’s philosophy of outstanding engineering and exceptional value for money, and we’re delighted that car buyers are continuing to respond to that.”

Best qualifying to date for Aston Martin at Nürburgring 24 Hours

Aston Martin’s pair of V12 Vantage GT3s will line up alongside one another on the grid for tomorrow’s ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24 Hour race having qualified in 16th and 17th positions. Among a grid of close to 170 cars, Aston Martin drivers Johannes Stuck (A) and Tomas Enge (CZ) were able to secure the marque’s strongest starting positions to date for the twice-around-the-clock endurance epic.

Following two preliminary qualifying sessions on Thursday evening and Friday morning, the 40 fastest cars entered into a two-lap pole position shootout, which was a new addition for 2012. Having randomly drawn their starting positions earlier in the day, Stuck began the session ninth on the road, with Enge in second.

Stuck set his quickest time on the second of his two flying laps, stopping the clock at 8m 23.816s in the #007 V12 Vantage GT3. Enge was able to pass the first-placed car on the long Döttinger Höhe straight soon before his first flying lap to ensure he had a clear circuit ahead of him. The Czech driver also set his fastest time on his second tour of the 25km circuit in the #006 car, recording a best of 8m 24.824s.

Stuck and team-mates Dennis Rostek (D), Ferdinand Stuck (A) and Darren Turner (GB), one of Aston Martin’s factory drivers, will line up in 16th position. Enge and co-drivers Fredy Barth (CH), Oliver Mathai (D) and Stefan Mücke (D), also a factory driver, will start the 24-hour race from 17th on the grid.

Of his qualifying effort, Stuck said: “I’m very pleased with the time. I was a bit cautious for the first couple of kilometers of my warm-up lap, but I felt that the car was good so I was able to push hard. Maybe we could have been a couple of places higher, but this is a 24-hour race so qualifying is really just about prestige. Those were the first two laps I’ve ever had in a racing car on this track without seeing another car, which allowed me to focus on the lap. The car felt really good and it was a lot of fun to drive.”

Enge added: “I’m happy with the starting position, but I think I could have gone even quicker. This is Aston Martin’s first time out at this race with GT3 cars, so it’s encouraging that we’re quite quick already. It’s also the first time that I’ve been able to push 100 per cent because there was no traffic and with two more laps I could have been faster. I’m very pleased with the Yokohama tyres and the performance of the car, but we know that this race can be unpredictable. The key will be staying out of trouble.”

Garador introduces the first Secured by Design up and over door

As home security continues to be a growing concern for home owners, specifiers and house builders are increasingly demanding products that are inherently secure.

And the security of the garage and its contents is becoming as important to some homeowners as the rest of the house.   Therefore Garador is extremely proud that it has become the first Up and Over Door manufacturer to become a member of "Secured by Design" (SBD), the official UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of 'designing out crime'.

Garador's new Guardian Range of doors currently encompassing redesigned Carlton and Horizon doors which have undergone rigorous tests which are mandatory to assure that they really will stand up to the test that criminals may adopt in their attempts to break in to steal the garage contents or gain access to other parts of properties.

Simon Hipgrave, MD, said: "We have always been proud of the strength and quality of our doors, but to be able to now also provide a door recognised with the "Secured by Design" accreditation is fantastic.  This has not been gained over night; we have worked very closely with SBD and made a number of adaptations to our product, to ensure that these doors meet the very strict criteria."

Secured by Design focuses on the crime prevention of homes and commercial premises by designing out crime from the start by using appropriate products. The principles have been proven to achieve a reduction in crime of up to 60%, by combining minimum standards of physical security and well-tested principles of natural surveillance and defensible space.

The membership scheme currently includes over 400 companies whose products have been awarded 'Police Preferred Specification' status across a broad range including; bicycle security, perimeter fencing, mobile phones, roofing products and secondary glazing.

Licensed members of the Secured by Design scheme are entitled to use the Secured by Design logo and promote the term 'Police Preferred Specification' on products which have passed the tests specified by ACPO Secured by Design.

New through beam sensors fit narrow aluminium door frames

Meeting international standards for pedestrian door applications with 12m range, 5-degree optical angle and excellent EMC performance.

Carlo Gavazzi Automation has expanded its family of pedestrian door and entrance sensors with the introduction of a new slimline device. The PD70 sensor measures just 11.5 x 11.5 x 70mm, making it suitable for installation in narrow aluminium door profiles as well as pass gates, turnstiles and other applications where space is limited.

Designed in accordance with the latest standards for Europe and North America, the PD70 complies with regulations such as EN12978, EN12445, EN12453 and UL325. Its high efficiency aspheric lens geometry increases sensing distance to 12m, and provides s a wide +/- 5 degree detection angle that nevertheless meets ESPE-2 industry norms.

Sensitive components in the receiver are covered by a metal shield, which not only ensures high EMC immunity, but also functions as the aperture for the received beam.

Sensor and emitter are powered by a 10-30V DC supply. The 100mA receiver output is available with NPN or PNP transistors, and with either make (NO) or break (NC) switching. A separate test input (mute) on emitter allows fast verification of the sensing functions, typically required to be carried out daily.

Solid polycarbonate construction, together with IP67 protection against dust and water ingress, extends the applications from entrance safety and control, out to industrial doors and retail checkout counters.

Mounting holes are provided for self-cutting 2.9x10mm or M3 through-hole screws, so the PD70 can be installed as a replacement for existing popular door sensors, whether in retrofits or new builds. A double sided tape is supplied to simplify the installation of the sensor fixing screw.

Flatpacked Garages and Garden Sheds - A New Opportunity?

Ryterna Garage Doors' Mobile Buildings department produces ready to assemble sheds and garages that offer an alternative product for garage door installation companies to offer their customers.

Professional installation provides both added value to the customer and increased profit for the dealer. Whereas, if the customer's budget is tight, thanks to the ease of assembly, DIY installation is a money-saving option for any competent do-it-yourselfer, working alone or with a little help from their friends.

The garages and sheds come packed in easy to handle pieces. Each one is equipped with a Ryterna sectional overhead door  that can be used manually or with an optional electric operator.
Widths are 2.60m (garden shed) or 3.20m (garage). Length can vary from 2.90m to 6.90m and the height to the top of the roof is a standard 2.84 m.

Side walls are made of Ryterna's sections. Sections are 40 mm thick, double skin zinc coated steel, filled with freon free PU foam.  All parts are zinc coated and the buildings come with all fasteners and assembly instructions included.

Robust construction means they will last for many years and unlike traditional garages, there's always the possibility of dismantling the garage to move it to a new location and build it all over again.

* Garden sheds have a door opening of 2m X 2m making them ideal for motorcycles and bicycles, lawn mowers, garden tools, etc.
* Garages have a door opening of 2.5m X 2m providing enough space for the car and all the other stuff that people fill them with.

There is a choice of section styles, finishes and colours for the side walls.

Additional options include:
Windows, wicket doors, pet flaps, ventilation grills and glazed panels all of which are factory installed on bespoke orders. Download a brochure here www.rcontainer.eu/documents/mobile-flatpack-garage-en.pdf.

1,500,000TH FORD FOCUS SOLD IN BRITAIN NETS ESSEX CRICKETER JAIK MICKLEBURGH

Sales of the Ford Focus reach 1,500,000 this  week as Essex batsman Jaik Mickleburgh takes delivery of the landmark car – a five-door Titanium X model.

Since launch in 1998, Ford Focus has held the crown of overall sales leader for 10 consecutive years until 2008 when Fiesta took the number one spot.

The award winning all-new Focus, launched last year, has received widespread recognition for its driver assistance technologies and more recently the introduction of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol powertrain, which in April - its first full month on sale, accounted for 17 per cent of all Focus sales in the UK.

This powertrain combines turbocharging, direct injection and twin variable cam timing to deliver high levels of performance and refinement with all the fuel economy advantages of downsizing.  The 100PS version, for example, enjoys up to 170Nm of peak torque, whilst delivering a combined fuel economy of 58.9mpg and outright best-in-class petrol CO2 emissions of 109g/km.

The 1,500,000th Ford Focus was delivered to 22-year-old Jaik Mickleburgh, a right-handed batsman playing for Essex Cricket first team and who has also played for the England U19s.

Jaik made his first-class debut for Essex in August 2008 against Leicestershire where he scored 60 as Essex won by an innings. In April 2010 Jaik scored his debut first class century of 174 off 388 balls including 13 fours and a six against Durham. With James Foster this helped to set a record 5th wicket partnership for Essex of 339.

Taking the keys to his new Focus Jaik said:  “I have had four Fords in the four years since passing my test – three of them were the latest Focus models and one Kuga.  For the long drives between home, Ford County Ground and away games, the Ford Focus delivers.  One feature I like is heated seats which soothe away aches after playing.”

Ford recently confirmed its ongoing sponsorship of the Essex County Cricket Ground in Chelmsford, called the “Ford County Ground”.  Ford is the county's largest private employer with the majority of Ford's 12,000 UK employees based at sales and marketing, manufacturing and research and development facilities in Essex.  Ford has sponsored Essex County Cricket Club's home ground since 2005.

*All fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures in g/km are from officially approved tests in accordance with EC Directive 93/116/EC.  Fuel economy figures quoted are based on the European Fuel Economy Directive EU 80/1268/EEC and will differ from fuel economy drive cycle results in other regions of the world.

Exova advances garage door security with industry first

Experts at Exova, the global testing group, have started to set new standards in home security after certifying the first residential up-and-over garage door to meet the Secured By Design standards, the groundbreaking national police initiative.

The Secured By Design membership scheme currently includes more than 400 companies offering products to have been awarded 'Police Preferred Specification' status, said to reduce the risk of crime by up to 60 per cent. Products include bicycle security, perimeter fencing, mobile phones, roofing products and secondary glazing.

Exova Warringtonfire, part of the Exova group, was approached by Somerset-based Garador Ltd, a producer of advanced garage doors, to help certify a flagship new product to Exova’s Certisecure standard, which meets the testing and certification requirements for entry into Secured By Design.

Now the ‘Guardian’ range of both canopy and retractable up-and-over doors have successfully been tested to STS202 level BR1 by Exova Warringtonfire, verifying that they can withstand a series of professional attacks simulating burglary attempts.

Garador was able to develop the new range of products by taking advantage of Exova Willenhall’s Burglar Resistance Research and Development Day, which tested products to their limits, exposing strengths and weaknesses in design.

Mark West, operations manager for security products certification at Exova Warringtonfire, said: “This is a real landmark in residential garage door design, and is the first time such a product has been certified to Secured By Design standards.

“Garador were able to learn from the results gained during an Exova Warringtonfire’s Burglar Resistance Research and Development Day to develop truly industry leading products.”

He said that learning from the experience and strengthening the product resulted in Garador being awarded an STS202 level BR1 test result.

Certisecure inspectors have also carried out the successful assessment of Garador’s factory production control methods which has led to the Certisecure certification being granted on both the Horizon and Carlton Up-and-Over garage door designs.

Simon Hipgrave, managing director of Garador, added: “We have always been proud of the strength and quality of our doors, but to also now be able to provide a door recognised with the “Secured by Design” accreditation is a great achievement.

“Exova’s R&D Day was a very useful resource which allowed us to look carefully at the security of our own products and develop this industry-leading range of doors.”

Rolling shutters should be checked for safe operation, says DHF

It is vital to ensure that industrial rolling shutters are installed correctly and are regularly maintained. The warning comes from the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) and follows a series of workplace accidents where injuries have been caused by falling shutters.

Companies where the accidents have taken place face prosecution under the Health Safety at Work Act for failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its employees.

The DHF provides guidelines on its website www.dhfonline.org.uk to help all those who are responsible for installing and maintaining powered shutters.

Said DHF general manager and secretary Michael Skelding: “Our advice to anyone who has industrial shutters already in, or are about to have shutters installed, is clear - in either case it’s vital that installation and maintenance is carried out by a member company of the DHF.

“An inadequately installed shutter can fall for a number of reasons and an expert should inspect an existing installation to ensure it is completely safe in operation. He will also be able to recommend a suitable service and maintenance schedule that will be based on the individual use to which the shutter is put.”

A DHF shutter installer will carry out an installation in accordance with TS (Technical Specification) 005:2009. This governs the levels of training and expertise of the installers and guarantees that the installation complies with BS EN 12635:2002. The TS 005 is available for download from the DHF website.

Also available from the DHF website is the Code of Practice for the Repair and Maintenance of Industrial and Commercial Doors which stresses the importance of regular door and shutter maintenance. The Code spells out what should be done to achieve optimum quality of operation with maximum safety in use throughout the full expected lifecycle of the equipment.

It also includes listings of legal requirements and guidance documents, gives definitions of common terminology and identifies the specific documentation needed for correct repair and maintenance. Necessary operational documentation and minimum requirements for repair and maintenance personnel are also described.

A DHF member will recommend a suitable service and maintenance schedule and his recommendation will be made in accordance with TS 004 which is the DHF standard governing the maintenance and repair. This ensures DHF members have the necessary experience and quality management systems in place to enable them to carry out correct service and maintenance work to the required standard. TS 004 can also be downloaded from the DHF website.

BWF seminar to give practical guidance on specification and use of fire doors

The BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme is holding a free, CPD-approved seminar at The Building Centre in London on 13 June for architects, building owners and specifiers involved in the selection and use of fire doors.

The seminar will focus on many of the concerns associated with the specification and use of fire doors, particularly in the light of continued low awareness of the fire safety obligations imposed by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

Delegates will learn experts from the London Fire Brigade and Brent Housing Partnership, both organisations highlighting some of the fire safety issues they face and recommended solutions.

Peter Johnson, chairman of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme, says:

“Our questions to all building owners and specifiers are: How safe are your fire doors? And how do you know? Everyone involved in the manufacture, specification, sale, installation and maintenance of fire doors and doorsets needs to understand their roles and responsibilities when it comes to fire safety.

“Fire doors are a critical component in the protection of lives and property. They are part of a building’s passive fire protection system, an essential requirement for all public buildings, offices and factories.”

The BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme is celebrating its 15th year in 2012. It was established by a group of prime fire door manufacturers aiming to improve the standard of fire doors across the supply chain.

The scheme has now expanded to include not just the market leaders in timber fire door manufacturing, but also major companies involved in converting fire doors, ironmongery, intumescent seals and glazing systems, and, more recently, merchants and installers. With more than 200 members, the scheme represents the supply chain for over 75% of the fire doors sold in the UK and has been responsible for the accreditation of 30 million fire doors since its start.
