A groundbreaking improvement to the way in which fire risk assessors in the UK support property owners and other responsible people under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO) and equivalent legislation is now available in the UK with the launch of the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) Certificated Fire Door Inspector assessment.
This completes the provision of Europe’s first Fire Door Inspection Scheme, which provides a systematic progression through comprehensive online education, invigilated examination and independent assessment by Exova Warringtonfire.
Once they have proved they have the competence to meet the required FDIS standard and committed to working to the FDIS Code of Conduct, Certificated Inspectors are provided with support tools including:
• access to the FDIS database that records and reports on all aspects of fire door inspections
• template inspection reports
• the unique FDIS labelling system
• template contracts
• sales tips
• sales leads
• discounted insurance deals.
Neil Ashdown, FDIS general manager said:
“Whilst there is a great deal of expertise in the UK concerning fire doors and their critical role in saving lives and protecting property, up to now there has been no formal recognition of this professionalism. This has made it difficult for those with obligations under the RRO to choose the most appropriate people to help them. And, worryingly, has left a gap in which less than competent professionals may be maintaining and installing fire doors incorrectly and unchecked. The FDIS database will hold information about all FDIS Certificated Inspector led fire door inspections in the UK and is set to become the most comprehensive and accurate source of information available to building owners, fire professionals, risk assessors and others.”
As people qualify to become Certificated Fire Door Inspectors, their details will be added to a web-based searchable database to help anyone with legal responsibilities for fire safety to find a qualified person to ensure the safe functioning of all their fire doors.
The assessment to become a Certificated Fire Door Inspector is available to anyone who has passed the FDIS Diploma Examination and completed the online Transition Module. This comprehensive module covers a range of topics to provide candidates with the knowledge and expertise they need to undertake their assessment and ultimately provide a professional service to their clients. It includes:
• Contracting with clients to establish appropriate obligations on both sides
• Meeting legal and clients’ requirements to gain access to sites
• Working with clients to agree what is required to undertake professional inspections
• Inspection and data recording processes
• The obligation to be bound by the FDIS Code of Conduct which sets out the principles of good practice
They are then required to submit their practical inspection skills to the scrutiny of independent assessors at Exova Warringtonfire. The assessment covers checks to ensure that knowledge gained from undergoing the Diploma is being applied, that the candidate demonstrates an understanding of the importance of carrying out accurate inspections as well as providing clients with high quality feedback and professional reports.
FDIS is a joint initiative developed by the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) and launched in February 2012.
