ASSA, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOY, has supplied products for an award winning children’s hospice.
Led by Spiller Architectural Ironmongery Ltd based in Oxford Road, Yeovil, Little Harbour in Cornwall was awarded the Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards, by GAI and RIBA for Public Health Buildings. The children’s hospice was an ambitious project, which focused very much on the specialist needs of its multiple users.
Designed to provide a high standard of care for terminally ill children and their families, the self-contained building features patient and family accommodation suites, treatment rooms, spa, as well as administration facilities and reception rooms.
ASSA worked closely with Spiller to ensure that patients and visitors had freedom of access around the building, but that this was carefully balanced with security for both the patients and staff. Supplying a masterkey system, modular lockcases, door furniture, remote door monitoring systems and standalone electronic locks, all helped to meet this brief.

The masterkey system featured patent protected ASSA twin combi cylinders to provide added peace of mind as well as improved key management for the building owner and users.
Both Codoor and Solicode access control systems from ASSA, were used by Spiller throughout the impressive hospice, whilst designated escape doors were incorporated within the monitoring system with single action egress, ensuring the building met with all the relevant fire safety standards.
In addition, external doors incorporated both deadbolt monitoring by means of dual pole microswitches housed within the lockcase body, as well as door position monitoring. This provides a clear indication of each doors’ status and vulnerability – valuable information for overseeing patient access and security.
Speaking on the award-winning project, Mike Trowbridge from Spiller Architectural Ironmongery Ltd, said:
“Little Harbour is an impressive project, which provides a vital service for the South West. Given the importance of the development it was crucial that we were able to supply products and solutions that met with the building’s demands, as well as the latest legislation. ASSA products enabled us to do this.
“The masterkey system and remote access control systems in particular, are vital in achieving the balance between access and security, whilst also creating management efficiencies for the building’s owners.”
Paul Johnson, Commercial Manager, from ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, added:
“The quality of the ASSA solutions supplied by Spiller more than justifies the prestigious award and were very pleased to be a part of this project. Working with Spiller has helped to ensure that a holistic specification solution has been supplied, which works with the building’s design and structure, whilst facilitating the needs of the patients, visitors and staff.”
