Investment in specialist training set to increase business for Arnold Laver

Twenty staff at leading timber merchant Arnold Laver are working through the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) Diploma in a move that will see the Sheffield-based company’s production, sales and technical staff improve their levels of knowledge and customer support and the company increase its fire doors business.

Arnold Laver takes particular pride in the high quality of both its products and customer service and invests significantly in training its staff so that they can share their expertise with their customers.

The FDIS Diploma comprises a series of online education modules that have been researched and authored by industry experts, which can be studied at a pace to suit individual learners and is completed by passing the FDIS Diploma examination which is taken at a local centre. The Arnold Laver staff are working through the modules with the aim of improving their awareness of the issues around specification, installation and maintenance of fire doors. It is planned for some of the staff to move onto the second stage of the FDIS programme by becoming FDIS Certificated Inspectors.

Group joinery manager David Oldfield said:
“We are committed to ensuring our staff have the knowledge and skills to be able to provide the very best service. This is obviously good for our customers who benefit from our investment. However, it is also going to give us a new revenue stream that will help to grow the business too.”

The UK’s Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) is the first such scheme in Europe, designed to transform people’s knowledge and understanding about the critical role of fire doors. Its ultimate purpose is to help improve safety and save lives through creating a new pool of expertise and competence to help those with legal responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

It provides a vital resource to help the ‘Responsible Person’ complete fire risk assessments for the premises they manage. It also raises awareness of defective fire doors and the potentially tragic consequences of leaving these unchecked. FDIS is delivered by the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI), the two leading authorities on fire doors and their components.
