Assa Abloy Security Solutions Secures Weavers’ Triangle

ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOY, has supplied products – including its high performance specification lockcase, Optimus3 – for a new University Technical College, as part of the wider redevelopment of a famous North West landmark.

Widely considered as the heart of Burnley’s textile industry in the 19th century, Weavers' Triangle is located on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The remaining buildings have been identified as a significant conservation area, one of which – the grade 2-listed Victoria Mill – has been redeveloped into a £10.3 million University Technical College for the Visions Learning Trust.

Preparing 14-to-19-year-olds for the engineering, manufacturing and construction industries, the technical college has been supplied with a range of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions products via local Architectural Ironmongers, Mercer and Sons.

ASSA ABLOY branded DC500 door closers were installed, enabling doors to be easily opened by younger students, or disabled users, thanks to the cam motion functionality. This assists in fulfilling the duties required under The Equality Act, specifically BS8300 and Approved Document M of The Building Regulations.

Optimus3 lock cases from UNION, a brand under ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, also adhere to the requirements under The Equality Act. Plus, thanks to an easily reversible latch, which can adjust the handing of a door quickly and easily on-site, the lock cases provide flexibility and simplicity upon installation – critical for projects on this scale.

Also from UNION, 1000-series lever handles and a keyULTRA™ masterkey system completed the package from ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions. The masterkey system possesses one of the longest patents on the market – until 2028 – protecting both the key and cylinder.

Ben Hacking, qualified scheduler at Mercer and Sons said:
“In a college environment, it is fundamental that security meets rigorous legislative demands. ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions simplified the project from a supply perspective, providing us with a comprehensive package of high security, which meets all current requirements and is competitively priced.

“We have a close working relationship with the main contractor on the project, Barnfield Construction Ltd, so it was crucial to ensure that we installed quality products, which would be durable and reliable for the college. The fact that the site was a conservation area increased the pressure for a specification that addresses both functionality and aesthetics; ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions had the breadth of range available to assure us they could deliver.”

Ian Chapman, Regional Manager for ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, added:
“The project at Weaver’s Triangle allowed us to truly deliver our specification service, offering advice about what measures would keep the building safe for the staff and students.

“Through our affiliation with Mercer and Sons Locksmiths we have installed a reliable security system, which has created a secure learning environment.”
