Master Locksmiths Association joins powered gate safety campaign

The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), the UK’s leading trade association for the locksmith industry, is the latest professional organisation to join a vital national safety campaign.

Campaigners have declared a week of action in October in a bid to dramatically improve the safety of automated gates in the UK.

As well as licensing its approved company locksmiths to ensure they’ve been vetted, are regularly inspected and have met minimum competence requirements, the MLA promotes locksmiths’ standards of conduct and practice. It is the latest in a number of influential groups in the security, enforcement, inspection, education and safety sectors who are lending their support to Gate Safety Week - October 13 - 19 www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk .

It is being organised by the Powered Gate Group of the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) which comprises Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment.

The DHF Powered Gate Group was set up with the encouragement of the Health & Safety Executive following fatal accidents involving unsafe gates. In recent years, three children and three adults have been killed in gate accidents. More than two thirds of all automated gates in the UK fail to meet current safety standards and could be potentially unsafe.

At a court case earlier this year, two gate companies were heavily fined for health and safety breaches that resulted in the death of a child. After the sentence, the Health & Safety Executive called on those responsible for managing properties with automatic gates to ensure they are properly maintained by competent personnel.

Said Steffan George, the MLA’s director of business development:
“The MLA has always worked closely with the DHF and we’re delighted to promote this important message of automated gate security. With locksmiths doing more and more in the realms of general security, and a number getting involved in installing powered gates, we’re keen to promote the message of ensuring all gates are safe and therefore happy to back Gate Safety Week.”
The Gate Safety Week campaign is raising awareness of the dangers that powered gates pose and advising that existing powered gates should be checked for safety and legal compliance. It is also stressing that properly installed and maintained gates are perfectly safe to use. There is comprehensive guidance for security professionals, other professionals and the general public on the website www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk This includes a guide to safety legislation and a detailed run down of the safety features to look for on a powered gate.
