Door opens to increased power for the UK’s ironmongers with new appointment

The UK ironmongery industry is set to have a stronger voice in door hardware standards setting with the news that the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) Technical Manager Douglas Masterson has been voted onto the CEN Task Group for lever handles.

The group’s membership comprises trade associations, manufacturers and other interested bodies and determines, with input from country specific groups, what standards should be and what testing methods are required to demonstrate meeting the criteria.
Douglas says:
“GAI has been represented on many UK standards setting groups for many years. However this is the first time that a GAI employee has been asked to join a group with a European wide remit. I am delighted that I will be able to represent the people at the sharp end of ironmongery and contribute to the door hardware standards setting debates on their behalf.”
Douglas Masterson joined the GAI as Technical Manager in January 2015 and his appointment was the first time that the Guild has had a permanent, full-time in house expert managing its technical helpline, providing technical updates to members and sitting on technical and standards committees in the UK and Europe. Douglas has worked in the architectural ironmongery industry for more than 25 years, ten of these as Regional Manager of MB Architectural for MacNaughton Blair/Lloyd Worrall Group. Prior to that he worked for major players in the sector including Allgood plc and Laidlaw. He also obtained a silver medal in his GAI Diploma in 2000 and has been a member of the GAI’s Executive Committee since 2008.
