Complying With The New Guidelines Set Out In Approved Document Q

Approved Document Q, which came into effect on 1 October 2015, is an approved government document containing new guidelines to help ensure all dwellings are fitted with windows and doors that meet the legal requirements of the Building Regulations 2010.

Martin Smith, product manager at IronmongeryDirect, explains these guidelines in more detail and discusses how Approved Document Q can help to increase security in dwellings.

It is the hope that the introduction of Approved Document Q will help ensure that all new easily accessible windows and doors fitted to dwellings comply with recognised standards. Adhering to these standards can help to deliver the highest levels of security to protect homes against opportunist burglars. The document works as a guide for tradespeople so they are able to provide and install windows and doors, and accompanying hardware, that meet the requirements explored below:

•    Windows – All easily accessible windows including skylights and basement windows should meet the guidelines set out in Approved Document Q. The design of the windows and the thickness of the pane are both key considerations. It is also important that all frames are mechanically fitted to the main structure of the dwelling.

•    Doors – All residential, patio and communal doors should follow the Approved Document Q guidelines. Any doors which can be used to gain indirect access to a dwelling, e.g. through a garage, must also meet the requirements. The thickness and height and width of the doorsets should be regulated and all external doors should have a means to safely identify a caller without having to completely open the door. In addition, it is advised that only door accessories that have been approved by the document should be installed to the door, to ensure it remains compliant.

It is vital that tradespeople are up-to-speed with the new guidelines set out in Approved Document Q so that all new windows and doors fitted meet the criteria set out in The Building Regulations 2010. Tradespeople with concerns about meeting these guidelines can find more information on the government’s website. It is the hope that the guidelines will have positive social implications by reducing the number of unlawful attempts to enter dwellings.
