Gilgen first to reach EU standard for security shutters

Gilgen Door Systems has helped raise physical security standards again by becoming the first UK manufacturer to launch a range of security roller shutters tested and approved to the European standard BS EN1627:2011.

Following a stringent test programme designed to assess resistance to a wide range of professional attack methods, three models in the Rolegard™ security range were tested and certified by the LPCB* (Loss Prevention Certification Board) to RC3 and RC4 standards.

RC3-4 security shutters are designed to provide high levels of hardened physical security for applications most at risk of criminal break-in or terrorist attack. Suitable applications include critical national infrastructure, financial centres, museums, communications, data and media centres, government buildings and high value commercial premises.

Alongside the new models Gilgen will continue to provide a comprehensive range of high security shutters that meet UK Loss Prevention and ‘Secured by Design’ standards with models tested to LPS1175, issue 7, level 2 to level 5. The company’s investment in these new RC3-4 models means it can provide a solution for building projects where the European standard has been specified, giving customers’ across the globe the reassurance that their entrances are protected to the required standard.

European standards have stringent requirements which differ in many ways to British standards, for example, an additional provision for static and dynamic load protection up to 10kn of pressure. To achieve the required standard the shutters were specifically designed around the demands of EN1627 and through the test programme had to withstand a simulated professional attempt to gain entry using a range of powerful tools including cordless power tools such as grinders, drills and saws over an extended attack time.

Rolegard RC3-INS-HD and RC4-INS-HD provide RC3 and RC4 level security along with energy-saving properties through an integral core. These models are available with direct drive or heavy duty chain drive motors and certified for structural openings up to 6metres wide by 8metres high. Completing the line up the RC4-DS-HD, is certified to RC4 standard and comes with reinforced double skin lath, providing an option for additional blast performance.

Each model is available with a choice of manual dead locks or a 24v electric solenoid locking system. These lock the bottom edge of the curtain assembly tightly against the floor to resist the exceptionally high static loads which are used to lift and push the curtain during the forced entry test program. A range of activation controls is available including push button, sensor, key switch and remote control, in addition the shutters can be integrated into the building management and alarm system.

Commenting on the launch, Managing Director, David Cerquella said:
“We are delighted to launch these new models which are a result of our continuous programme of product development and testing. We have listened to customers at home and overseas markets and will continue to develop solutions that enable them to mitigate developing risks”.
Gilgen Door Systems now offers the widest range of security tested shutters on the market and is committed to further development around customer needs.
