Norseal Gives a Hand to Finger Safety

Fingers trapped in doors at the hinge edge are one of the most common accidents in schools, nurseries and other education settings. ROSPA estimates that 30,000 children are injured in finger trapping accidents every year.

Designed for high traffic areas to withstand the knocks that pupils will inflict in the everyday life of a school, Norseal’s finger-protection products are engineered to last, to reduce maintenance costs, and provide exceptional finger protection without an institutional look.

Some hospitals estimate that up to 2% of admissions to A&E are the result of fingers getting trapped in doors. Financially, the cost can also be high. Compensation experts estimate that a low-level hand injury could result in a pay-out between £700 and £3,400 - for a crushing injury resulting in pain that lasts for no longer than a couple of months. If a hand injury results in ongoing symptoms, the value of the claim can increase to as much as £10,000.

Norseal offers a range of seals that protect and prevent fingers from being trapped in doors, both surface-mounted and fully-integrated for new doors and retro-fit projects.

Central to the Norseal range is the NOR200, a no-nonsense surface mounted finger protection solution. Made from high quality plastic available in white and brown, this protector can be easily and cost-effectively fitted in minutes and will provide lasting protection having been tested up to 1,000,000 cycles.

The full set comes with parts for both sides of the door: a large cover for the opening side gap, as well as a smaller knuckle protector for the smaller gap on the other side of the hinge. Both parts are supplied with high-tack self-adhesive, and pins are also supplied for extra hold in high traffic areas.

In a school with eighty doors, Norseal estimates that to the cost of fitting a Norseal NOR200 system to every door would be a fraction of the expense of lawsuits, bad media coverage and outcry from parents. This is before considering the moral and ethical responsibilities of the school to protect their children.
