Hörmann LPU 42 Sectional Doors – New Colours Introduced

Hörmann UK have added two new colours to their LPU 42 sectional garage door range increasing the standard colour options available to 17.

The new colours, Agate grey and Chartwell green, join an array of colours that provide consumers with the opportunity to select a garage door that will subtly co-ordinate with the exterior of their property.

Grey continues to be a popular colour choice amongst consumers when choosing a new garage door, with Anthracite and Slate grey leading the field.

To offer a new take on grey, Hörmann has added Agate grey which provides a lighter, softer shade of grey.

With a hint of green, Agate grey has a more natural tone which is particularly suited to properties constructed from stone or lighter brickwork.

Chartwell green, a cool tone of green, is well-liked by homeowners, particularly as a colour choice for windows and entrance doors.

The addition of the Chartwell green colour option to the LPU 42 range now provides the opportunity to fully harmonise all exterior finishes and provide added kerb appeal to any home.

Available in three finishes - Silkgrain, Slategrain and Woodgrain, the two new colours join a sophisticated colour palette which includes Moss green, Light ivory, and Grey aluminium.

ADSA Launches New Podcast

It’s good to talk! So says the Automatic Door Suppliers Association which has just launched its own podcast – Tech Talk.

The series will feature conversations on topical issues facing the industry and interviews with those who work in it.

The first episode focuses on changes to BS EN 16 005 - a standard that defines safety in use and test methods requirements for power-operated pedestrian door sets. It teases out the main changes of the update and responsibilities that fall upon manufacturers and technicians.

The 10-minute discussion is hosted by ADSA MD Ken Price, in conversation with Technical Training Manager Darren Hyde and Head of Operations Fae Ellor.

The monthly podcast is available through Apple and Android streaming services and can also be accessed through the ADSA website and social media channels. ADSA members can also access episodes through its online Academy.

Tech Talk has been introduced as an extension to ADSA’s existing communication channels and its availability on public streaming channels is intended to make it more accessible to “people on the go”.

Said Ken: “We felt that this was an ideal medium for many of our members, particularly technicians, who may be on the road travelling to different sites. Podcasts provide a bite-sized opportunity to raise awareness of key issues, in a way that can be informative and entertaining.
“People consume media in different ways and at different times – from their daily commute to when they are exercising. By producing Tech Talk as a podcast, we hope to highlight important issues, break them down and examine them in detail but in a way that is easy to access and provides a different take on a variety of subjects.”

It is planned that some episodes of Tech Talk will also be produced as video casts to incorporate visual requirements.

The first episode of Tech Talk can be accessed via ADSA.podbean.com and through streaming platforms.

First Ever Porsche 911 Turbo Returns to Limelight at Concours of Elegance 2024

The Concours of Elegance, Europe’s premier concours d’elegance event, is proud to announce that its 2024 edition will feature one of the most historically significant Porsches of all: the original 1973 911 Turbo ‘Prototype’.

This special car represents the genesis of an icon; it was the first road-going 911 to wear the ‘Turbo’ badge.

The car that will be on show at Hampton Court Palace from 30th August to 1st September – chassis 9113300157 - was the very machine that starred on the Porsche stand at the 1973 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, putting the concept of a turbocharged 911 on the map, setting the template for an enduring performance car legend.

The Turbo concept was created by Porsche to give an indication of what a ‘super’ 911 would look like, combining supreme performance with grand touring luxury.

Finished in a striking one-off silver, with hand-painted ‘Turbo’ script, this show car sold the dream of a 911 with unprecedented levels of turbocharged performance, previewing the production ‘930’ Turbo that would appear two years later.

When introduced in 1975, the 930 would be the fastest production car available in Germany.

Taking a standard 911S as its base, the concept was built up in Porsche’s design studio Style Porsche, with the construction overseen by the firm’s chief engineer, Helmuth Bott.

Ironically, when it made its debut on the glitzy Porsche stand in Frankfurt, the car didn’t actually feature the headline-grabbing, turbo 2.7-litre flat-six motor; it wasn’t ready in time for the show.

Porsche instead modified a conventional naturally aspirated motor, with additional components - including the Turbo itself – mocked up in wood and painted to look real.

Despite its imitation mechanicals, the concept was more than enough to convince and capture the imagination of the show’s crowds.

It was a great hit, and a very significant car for the brand, setting out Porsche’s stall for the coming years.

The concept was in fact, three concepts in one; in addition to debuting the Turbo name, it featured styling elements that would go into the ‘G-Model’ 911, while also previewing the RSR racer and ultra-rare 3.0 RS road car.

The concept showed a much more purposeful and aggressive 911 design language, featuring larger Fuchs wheels and pumped-up bodywork, with dramatically swollen arches and an outlandish ‘whale tail’ rear wing, the latter dramatically improving the cooling and aerodynamic capabilities.

After the seismic first appearance in Frankfurt, the concept toured the world, appearing at motor shows in Paris, Tokyo and Melbourne, before returning home to Stuttgart.

In 1975, Alan Hamilton – a racing driver and the Porsche importer for Australia – was on a visit to the Porsche factory, when he spotted the concept languishing in a corner.

Following its show appearances, the car had been fitted with numerous pre-production RSR parts, acting as a testbed for the racer.

To Hamilton, who was eager to get his hands on the first example of the racing special, the concept represented the fastest route into RSR ownership, so a deal was done and the car was exported to Australia.

The piece of Porsche history subsequently made a handful of competitive outings in the hands of Hamilton, before being traded amongst the Australian Porsche cognoscenti over the coming decades.

It was later exported to the United States in 2010, making a rare public appearance at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance later that year.

After a six-year sojourn in the States, the Turbo concept was purchased by the current owner, who brought it home to Europe.

Now presenting in stunning original condition, looking just as it did under the Motorshow lights back in Frankfurt in ’73 – only now with a genuine turbo motor - it is ready to delight audiences once again at Hampton Court Palace later this year.

This iconic 911 will star alongside 60 other concours cars, drawn from leading private collections the world over.

Outside of the main Concours display, there will be several special features, including the Levitt Concours – dedicated to the most passionate female owners – the 30UNDER30, which celebrates enthusiastic owners under 30 years of age and the Club Trophy, which gathers the very best examples of models from the nation’s best car clubs.

Away from the automotive displays, Concours of Elegance 2024 will again be an occasion of pure luxury, with champagne provided by Charles Heidsieck, picnics by Fortnum & Mason and a collection of art, jewellery and fashion displays.

Presenting Partner A. Lange & Söhne will once again showcase some of its most intricate timepieces.

Tickets to the Concours of Elegance are available now from www.concoursofelegance.co.uk/tickets

DHF advises on the important role of Environmental Product Declarations

Tamworth-based trade association, Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is once again stressing the importance of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).

An EPD is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products.

In summary, it measures the environmental ‘footprint’ of a product.

EPD demonstrate the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), detailing ‘cradle to grave’ environmental impact of all processes involved with the manufacture of a product.

This can include extraction and processing of raw materials, transport, all elements of the manufacturing process, dismantling and waste disposal.

DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens explains:

“Although it is not yet compulsory to use EPD in the UK, the market is increasingly self-regulating as manufacturers seek to demonstrate carbon transparency and market their products accordingly.

“Participation in the EPD programme is essential if the construction industry is to meet the growing demand for greater sustainability.

“We are delighted to be able to support our members by offering generic EPD.”

Back in June 2017, DHF was widely considered ‘ahead of the game’ in launching 14 generic EPD (in collaboration with ARGE) - locks, door and window handles, hinges (single axis), lock cylinders, sliding door gear, window fittings, door closers, panic exit devices, shutter hardware, letter boxes, padlocks, glass door gear, electromechanical hardware and push button locks.

Since then, the federation has been educating and informing its members about the role and growing importance of EPD in the sustainability process; a complicated subject, DHF has been plugging the ‘information gap’.

This has effectively enabled members of the Building Hardware Group to meet changing market conditions.

Patricia continues:

“EPD provide manufactures with positive credentials that are key differentiators in today’s market and a powerful way to raise an organisation’s profile and demonstrate environmental commitments.

“In short, they enable the manufacturer to provide quantified data on their product’s environmental impacts, such as embodied carbon, ozone, acidification and more, surpass customer demands and specifications with increased transparency, promote a product’s reputation through internationally recognised standards, support innovative product development, such as improving efficiency for energy, materials and transport costs, enable whole life cycle management, and become recognised by building assessment schemes.”

In addition, they can inform building information modelling (BIM) software to make comparisons and assess design options that improve a building’s environmental performance.

Patricia concludes:

“DHF continues to support the green agenda and the increasing move towards green certification.

“EPD are considered crucial in demonstrating continued sustainability and providing reliable information so one product can be compared with another by looking at the various lifecycle stages.”

Currently, the UK has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Comp Door, Caring For Their Community!

As the leading manufacturer of composite doors, it will always be Comp Door’s choice, service, technical innovation and versatility which separates them from other composite door manufacturers.

However, Comp Door also prides itself as a caring manufacturer who enjoys providing support to its local community. Doors beyond compare because they care!

On hearing that an elderly gentleman who lives locally to Comp Door’s HQ which is based in the Newcastle-Under-Lyme area of North Staffordshire, had his door broken down by Police who needed to gain urgent access for the Ambulance service after he suffered a sudden stroke in his home.

The community put out a plea on social media seeking local businesses who could help and quickly provide a new front door to protect and re-secure his home whilst he was in hospital.

Comp Door happily stepped forward and agreed to manufacture and gift the elderly gentleman with a made-to-measure brand-new front door the next day. Working closely with a local customer Target Windows, who likewise agreed to work with Comp Door to install the new door free of charge.

Together the two businesses were able to make a huge difference to the elderly gentleman, allowing him comfort that his property was once again secure, so he could relax and focus on his recovery.

The elderly gentleman needless to say absolutely loves his brand-new beautiful Comp Door!

Richard Diliberto, Sales Director of Comp Door handing the new door key over
to the gentleman’s neighbour Charlotte Lea-Atkin

Richard Diliberto, Sales Director of Comp Door said:

“As a business we support several local initiatives and charitable causes.

“Hearing the sudden distress and circumstances around the gentleman’s illness we wanted to offer our assistance.

“We contacted one of our valued customers, Target Windows, who are local to the incident, they were delighted to help by installing our specially manufactured door, enabling us as a partnership of businesses to gift the entire door and fitting to help such a worthwhile local cause.

“Here at Comp Door, we are proud to say our ‘Doors are beyond compare’ this inevitably comes down to the fact that we as a business care!”

Charlotte Lea-Atkin, neighbour to the elderly gentleman adds:

“Seeing the house left unsecure and vulnerable to theft was worrying so the local community quickly began asking around to see if any local businesses would be willing to help.

“Comp Door were fantastic, they were the first business to respond offering to manufacture a new composite door the next day at no cost!

“They also worked with one of their customers, Target Windows, to install the door professionally and swiftly at no cost whatsoever between them.

“These two businesses not only did a wonderful deed for an elderly gentleman, they secured his home again and not just with any door - the new door is top-quality and simply stunning!”

Want manufacturing excellence and doors beyond compare?

Garador Introduces Stunning New Sectional Garage Door Colours

Garador have just expanded their range of standard colours on their market leading sectional garage doors.

Two beautiful new colours, Agate Grey (RAL 7038) and Chartwell Green (BS 14C35), have now been added to the range, providing further choice for homeowners.

Agate Grey is a stunningly popular shade that matches well with modern architecture and monotone colour palettes often found in new build properties and expensive renovation projects. Its low-key formality gives a long lasting fresh look that won’t diminish over time.

Chartwell Green is a lovely tranquil shade of green that was named after the colour Sir Winston Churchill chose to be used on his garden furniture. This soft, elegant colour is a beautiful addition to any style of home. It’s already very popular on entrance doors and window frames found on traditional bungalows and country houses, and now this look can be replicated on Garador’s sectional garage doors.

Garador’s sectional garage doors are among the best engineered garage doors on the market offering a number of exclusive features including excellent security and insulation as well as a stunningly modern appearance.

The addition of these two new on trend shades means there are now 18 standard colours to choose from across their sectional garage door range.

Access2 Wins ADSA Sponsored Award

Ken Price (left) presents the award to Neil Rule of Access2 seen here with Philip Goldberg (right), Treasurer of the GAI.

Access2 clinched the ADSA Sponsored Product Design and Innovation Award (Electronic) at the AI Specification Awards 2024 on 18 April 2024.

The Newcastle-upon-Tyne company, which specialises in the supply of master keyed cylinder locks, scooped the prestigious award for TeDee – a keyless home locking system which can be used remotely via a smartphone or watch.

ADSA managing director Ken Price attended the ceremony at Southwark Cathedral and presented the award to Access2 MD Neil Rule.

Judges considered TeDee a “highly innovative product combining functionality, aesthetics and security with the convenience of modern technology” and deemed it a “most impressive product”

A video on the winning entry can be seen on the GAI website or YouTube.

This was the second time that electronic solutions have had their own category in the biennial awards – reflecting levels of innovation within the industry and the demand for blended solutions. The category attracted significant entries, showcasing solutions which combine traditional architectural ironmongery with electronic/technological components and interfaces.

Other finalists included: UAP Limited for IONIC, ASSA ABLOY for Openings Studio and Surelock McGill: Trent for its mechanical and electronic access control heavy duty lockable handle.

Organised by The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the awards are staged to identify and reward excellence in the specification of architectural ironmongery in the construction industry.

Said ADSA Managing Director Ken Price:
“It was a wonderful event hosted in a magnificent venue – a place where we could appreciate the historic architecture and marvel at the skills that must have gone into building such a place.
“Our warmest congratulations go to the team at Access2 which has demonstrated ingenuity and innovation by using emerging technologies to improve security and provide home owners with convenience and peace of mind.”

Leading architectural ironmonger HAF @ John Planck has received a hat trick of awards for its outstanding work on London’s prestigious The Old War Office (The OWO) renovation.

Scooping the Residential Award for The OWO Residences by Raffles, as well as the Hospitality and Winner of Winners Awards for Raffles London at The OWO at the AI Specification Awards 2024, HAF @ John Planck was recognised with the accolades at a ceremony at Southwark Cathedral.

Presented by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the awards identify and reward excellence in the specification and design of architectural ironmongery.

The transformation of The OWO was led by EPR Architects, with HAF @ John Planck appointed to expertly source the vast quantities of ironmongery required for more than 5,300 doors and 1,000 windows.

John Planck’s involvement in the project spanned a staggering six-year period and entailed liaising with 37 different consultants, including four separately appointed interior designers, creating 19 separate hardware packages.

Widely regarded as one of London’s most exclusive and glamourous destinations, the Grade II listed The OWO building is now home to the exclusive 120-bedroom 5* Raffles London hotel as well as 85 super-prime luxury residences.

The sensitive restoration took place across an 8-year period, at a cost of over £1billion.

GAI Treasurer Philip Goldberg said:
“The AI Specification Awards celebrate architectural ironmongery at its most effective and beautiful best.
“Entries are judged on the totality of the architectural ironmongery specification – how it supports and enhances the design vision; how it ensures the security, safety and accessibility of the building; and the contribution it makes to the functionality, sustainability and longevity.
“As such, these awards highlight the importance of genuine partnership between architects, designers and architectural ironmongers, and rightly reward the whole specification team.”

Commenting on the Raffles London at The OWO hotel project, the judges said it was ‘One of the most stunning and comprehensive’ they judged, and that it was ‘difficult to find fault with the project.’

Speaking about The OWO Residences by Raffles, the judges said:

“A project with a huge amount of bespoke ironmongery, so beautifully crafted and finished and very much in keeping with the building. It blends seamlessly with the doors.

“A stunning and in some cases breathtaking project.”
Barny Bott, Business Development Manager from HAF @ John Planck, said:
“We’re thrilled that our hard work on The OWO project has been recognised with the AI Specification Awards from GAI and RIBA.
“To have been involved in the transformation of such an iconic building has been incredible and these accolades truly validate our commitment to delivering excellence in architectural ironmongery.
“We’re grateful for the recognition and excited to continue pushing the boundaries of our craft in future projects.”

Potholes and two wheels – why it’s even more important to avoid a pothole on a motorcycle

ROAD SAFETY and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is encouraging motorcyclists to be alert to potholes and poorly-maintained road surfaces. As the riding season gets under way, GEM says more roads than ever are in poor condition, posing a serious risk to riders.

GEM is also warning of other safety hazards for riders on rural roads, where two thirds of motorcycle fatalities occur1. An exceptionally wet winter has left large amounts of mud and debris on road surfaces, compromising a rider’s ability to stop or change direction promptly.

Recent data from the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) shows that less than half of roads in England and Wales maintained by local councils are in a good condition, with 36 per cent deemed adequate and 17 per cent poor2. As the weather improves and the riding season gets into full swing, GEM is urging riders to protect themselves from the danger created by potholes, ruts and poor surfaces.

GEM road safety adviser James Luckhurst said: “Potholes present risks for riders and their bikes. If you’re not paying attention and you hit a deep enough pothole, you run the real risk of losing control and falling off. Even in a less serious impact, you may pick up damage to your suspension and tyres.

“Treat any rural road with respect, choose your speeds wisely, never exceed speed limits and don’t be tempted to keep up with faster riders if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable.”

Tips for riders

Follow GEM’s five simple ‘lifesaver’ safety tips and reduce the risk of being involved in a collision:

  • Take pothole risks seriously. Adjust your speed and stay 100 per cent focused on your journey. Make a continuously evolving risk assessment of road surface and condition, as well as anticipating other hazards.

  • Commit to some additional training which can help you pick up advanced rider tips on planning manoeuvres, cornering and braking. Take a first aid course as well, so that you feel confident in assisting a fellow road user who may need your help.

  • Wear high visibility clothing on all journeys, and ride in a way that gives other road users a better chance of seeing you.

  • Don’t ride beyond your comfort zone, especially if you’re riding in a group. If your friends are cornering too quickly for you, let them go and join them at the next junction.

  • Try not to dwell on your errors as you go along. Plan 10 to 15 seconds ahead, anticipate the next hazards. When you stop for a break, reflect on anything that didn’t go to plan, ask what you have learnt and how you can reduce the chance of the same thing happening again.
