Door opens to increased power for the UK’s ironmongers with new appointment

The UK ironmongery industry is set to have a stronger voice in door hardware standards setting with the news that the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) Technical Manager Douglas Masterson has been voted onto the CEN Task Group for lever handles.

The group’s membership comprises trade associations, manufacturers and other interested bodies and determines, with input from country specific groups, what standards should be and what testing methods are required to demonstrate meeting the criteria.
Douglas says:
“GAI has been represented on many UK standards setting groups for many years. However this is the first time that a GAI employee has been asked to join a group with a European wide remit. I am delighted that I will be able to represent the people at the sharp end of ironmongery and contribute to the door hardware standards setting debates on their behalf.”
Douglas Masterson joined the GAI as Technical Manager in January 2015 and his appointment was the first time that the Guild has had a permanent, full-time in house expert managing its technical helpline, providing technical updates to members and sitting on technical and standards committees in the UK and Europe. Douglas has worked in the architectural ironmongery industry for more than 25 years, ten of these as Regional Manager of MB Architectural for MacNaughton Blair/Lloyd Worrall Group. Prior to that he worked for major players in the sector including Allgood plc and Laidlaw. He also obtained a silver medal in his GAI Diploma in 2000 and has been a member of the GAI’s Executive Committee since 2008.

Mul-T-Lock’s MT5 Installed In £15m Art Gallery Refurb

Mul-T-Lock’s MT5 security solution has been installed at Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, as part of a £15 million expansion and refurbishment programme.

The gallery, which reopened earlier this year after 16 months of remodeling works, has doubled in size. The extension at the rear of the building, which stretches out into Whitworth Park, incorporates a glass promenade and has extended the gallery’s recognised symmetrical structure.

Due to the overall expansion and a number of glass-winged extensions, the gallery required an effective security solution to accommodate the new building. Whitworth Art Gallery contacted local Mul-T-Lock dealer, Access Lock & Safe, who recommended a Mul-T-Lock MT5 Master key System and G-Series padlocks.

Andy Dixon from Access Lock & Safe, comments:
“We were involved with Whitworth Art Gallery from the inception of the refurbishment project. I had no doubt in my mind that Mul-T-Lock’s MT5 and G-Series padlocks were the best choice for such a huge project; a natural progression from the previous Mul-T-Lock Integrator platform already installed.

“Over a four month period, as each construction phase concluded, we installed the MT5 range across internal and external doors and incorporated training days to show the team at the gallery how the system worked. In total, Access Lock & Safe installed 90 cylinders and 12 G-Series padlocks.”

Mul-T-Lock’s MT5 solution is a multi-patented mechanical platform that combines intelligent access control with snap-resistant cylinders. Through advanced key control, via key card or master keying options, each door can be assembled to operate by one unique key, or to several keys, depending on the environment. With the same keying system, the G-Series padlocks contain high corrosion and attack resistant cylinders, in order to ensure maximum security.

Andy continues:
“The MT5 range is designed to be flexible; in such a vast commercial building, it was important that the gallery had the ability to limit and extend security access at the drop of a hat.

“Overall, I’m delighted that we worked on such a recognised project in Manchester, and would like to congratulate Whitworth Art Gallery on its recent awards after reopening.”

Since the relaunch, the Royal Institute of British Architects has recognised and named the gallery, the North West Building of the year. Whitworth Art Gallery has also been shortlisted for the Art Fund’s Museum of the Year award.

Dean Whiteside at Whitworth Art Gallery, comments:
“Having used both Mul-T-lock and Access Lock and Safe before, we were confident in the quality of the products and the level of service we would receive.

“The MT5 system delivers on all fronts, giving us a quality product, high levels of security and more importantly, the flexibility required to accommodate the specific needs of the building and its many users.

“With the support of Access Lock and Safe and Mul-T-lock, the entire process, from design through to delivery, seamlessly integrated into our project and operations.

“We are confident that the system will continue to deliver, and grow and change as our needs do.”
For more information on the MT5 and G-Series padlocks, visit www.mul-t-lock.co.uk.

Land Rover to Auction One-Of-A-Kind Defender, Built to Mark 2,000,000th Production Milestone

Land Rover have selected Bonhams to join them in celebrating 67 years of iconic Land Rover production by auctioning a unique vehicle that was built to commemorate the UK production of the two-millionth Series Land Rover and Defender.

With a bespoke design and an all-star cast of special guests helping to complete the momentous build, ‘Defender 2,000,000’ has been created to be a fitting tribute to almost seven decades of Land Rover production in the Solihull plant, UK.

Bonhams will unveil the vehicle at Goodwood Festival of Speed, being held 25-28 June. After completing a schedule of public appearances throughout the rest of the year, ‘Defender 2,000,000’ will be auctioned at a prestigious charity event, taking place at Bonhams New Bond Street salerooms on Wednesday 16 December.

Reflecting Defender’s heritage, all proceeds of the sale will be donated to Land Rover’s humanitarian and conservation partners – the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Born Free Foundation.

Robert Brooks, Bonhams Chairman, said:
“Bonhams and Land Rover are quintessentially British brands, and so we are delighted to be auctioning the two-millionth Series Land Rover and Defender on 16 December at our global headquarters in New Bond Street. It’s an honour to offer this landmark vehicle and I’ve no doubt there will be some spirited bidding.”

Robert Brooks

Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive of Jaguar Land Rover, said:
“Over 67 years, the Series Land Rover and in turn Defender has been the transport of choice for explorers, charity organisations, farmers and even royalty. Throughout history it has helped pioneers to reach the unreachable. What started life as an agricultural workhorse has transcended the automotive world to become a worldwide design icon. I was honoured to join the production line team in Solihull to help build this unique vehicle. It was a special experience which will no doubt become a fond memory.

“The auction of this milestone vehicle is an opportunity to own a piece of Land Rover’s history, as Defender enters its final phase of manufacturing in Solihull. Giving people the chance to buy this truly distinctive Defender to raise funds for the IFRC and Born Free Foundation is a suitable way to celebrate the role that Defender has played in supporting our humanitarian aid and conservation partners over the decades.”

During May 2015, a team of life-long Defender fans were invited to join the Solihull production line in May to help build this one-of-a-kind vehicle, including adventurer Bear Grylls,

Commenting while on the production line, Grylls said:
“The Land Rover Defender has been there for me more times than I care to remember. They are so often the unsung heroes of our TV shows, working hard in the toughest conditions to get crew in and out of exceptionally challenging terrains. Known and respected by me and many other adventurers for their rugged reliability - it was an honour to be asked to take part in the build of this very special car.”
Representatives from the IFRC and Born Free also made the journey to Solihull to fit their part to the vehicle, including actress and founder of the Born Free Foundation Virginia McKenna OBE.

The ‘Defender 2,000,000’ vehicle features a plethora of distinctive finishing touches. A map of Red Wharf Bay – where the design for the original Land Rover was first drawn in the sand – is engraved into the aluminium fender, which contrasts with the exterior Indus Silver satin paint. A unique ‘no 2,000,000’ badge sits on the rear of the vehicle, which is mirrored on the interior console. The design is finished with Santorini Black wheels and wheel arches, roof, door hinges, grille and mirror caps.

Inside, the leather seats also feature the ‘Red Wharf Bay’ graphic and ‘no 2,000,000’ logos have been stitched on the headrests. A bespoke aluminium plaque, signed by everyone who helped to assemble the vehicle is fitted to the driver’s seat plinth. On the front and rear, S90 HUE registration plates – a reference to the first ever pre-production Land Rover, registration ‘HUE 166’ – complete this one-of-a-kind Land Rover Defender.

Production of the original Land Rover Series I began at the famous Lode Lane facility in 1947 ahead of its launch at the Amsterdam Motor Show on 30 April 1948. Since then two million examples of the Series I, II III and Defender have been produced at Solihull.

GEZE UK unveils the OL Line natural ventilation system for high level windows and roof lights.

Opening and closing high level windows and roof lights will be a breeze thanks to the launch of a new natural ventilation system from GEZE UK.

The new OL Line manual window control system has been designed specifically for commercial and public buildings, including schools, and thanks to its modular design, can easily be retrofitted.

The OL Line provides an easy and reliable control system for even the most hard to reach of windows. A manual opener is fitted to the opening vent which is linked via lengths of conduit and cable to a wall mounted operator. The conduit can easily be bent around obstructions allowing the handle to be placed within easy reach.

This modular system has been designed to be as flexible as possible. Multiple vents can be operated easily from a single operator in a choice of installation arrangements. It is available in a choice of different opening widths from the most popular Midi operator to the Maxi operator for heavier window loads, making it suitable for use on most styles of window. It can even be used to open roof lights when used with a screwjack opener.

Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK said:

“Ninety per cent of windows in the UK are hung from the top and open outwards – obviously this is not a problem when they are positioned within easy reach but is more problematic for remote high level or difficult to access windows.

“The new OL Line is a natural extension to our range of natural ventilation products. It is extremely flexible, easy to install and can be retrofitted. As a result the OL Line is the ideal for manual system for public and commercial buildings as well as for schools where a cost effective ‘child-safe’ system is required.
“Ultimately, the new OL Line system makes natural ventilation a breath of fresh air!”

LUMI Looms Large

Lumi the groundbreaking new, structurally bonded window and door glazing system from Apeer, is set to take the market by storm.

Following its dazzling debut at Grand Designs Live in London, the company has been overwhelmed with leads and enquiries for the radically styled range of frameless windows, doors, entrance glazing, French doors and a bi-fold door system.

Marketing manager Linda Tomb said:
“It was a hugely successful launch and we are now refining our pricing and ordering systems for Lumi along with our technical and training manuals and videos.

“We have developed an at-a-glance pricing structure where each window and price and spec is clearly presented, enabling retailers to give customers a fully fitted quote which can later go on to be converted to an order.

“We have also built a training ‘house’ at our Ballymena factory where we can offer fitters hands on experience of how to install the windows. The facility can also be used as a showroom for customers and potential buyers so they can see the Lumi range for themselves and how it differs from anything else on the market.”
A first in its field, the new Lumi collection is set to bring the seamless sophistication of iconic glass structure to the residential housing market.
Offering a frame-free, 'wall of light profile' the triple glazed system is distinguished by its fused ceramic colour border. This is available in eight different exterior colours and eight further interior finishes.

In development for more than two-and-a-half years, the launch of Lumi represents an investment of nearly a million pounds for the company – and its first step into the windows market.

As well as being available in a full suite of matching designs, Lumi has a host of construction and performance benefits:

  • Stormproof design with flush proportional glazing (the double rebate is completely hidden)
  • 50mm triple glazed (6-4-4) toughened glass for maximum insulation and noise reduction
  • 80mm GRP double rebate frame offers exceptional U-values - as low as 0.7w/m2k on fixed glazing panels
  • Triple gasket seal
  • Double euro groove allows for versatile hardware options, concealed hinges and window locks
  • High security Winkhaus lock system
  • Kitemark glass and Kitemark Lumi composite front door options
  • Fab & Fix hardware
  • Variable clear glazing options
  • Concealed hinges offer smooth action, high weight load opening and wide opening

And finally, Lumi comes with a 10 year guarantee (structural, mechanical and colour fast).

Lumi windows are available as left and right opening options, fixed panes and top openers. External colour options are light blue, black, white, cream, light grey, Chartwell green, anthracite grey and slate blue. Interior finish choices are in halo white, cream, black, anthracite grey, AnTeak, Siena, Winchester and Swamp Oak.

Assa Abloy UK Allow Boarding Students Access

ASSA ABLOY UK has worked closely with Lincoln Security to provide one of the top performing schools in the country with effective access control solutions.

The Priory Academy LSST, based in Lincolnshire, provides places for around 240 pupils in each year group and many of the school’s students gain places at Oxbridge colleges, UK Medical Schools and a range of other top universities. The academy also offers boarding facilities at Robert de Cheney House for sixth form students.

A representative from the school contacted Lincoln Security when their existing access control system began malfunctioning, leaving some users unable to operate doors and a small number of students not being able to gain access to their residential bedrooms.

Lincoln Security and UNION designed a locking arrangement that ensures doors unlock without the means of cables, auto lock when shut and allow free exit, as well as providing a mechanical override on a master system. Lincoln Security also ensured that all existing apertures made by the previous hardware were covered using bespoke cover plates, helping the school to maintain an aesthetically pleasing environment for the students.

ASSA ABLOY supplied UNION Codehandle sets, providing effective key-less locking/unlocking for the students’ interior doors, 2c2 DIN nightlatches, half-euro cylinders and euro profile escutcheons.

Emily Greaves at Lincoln Security, said:
“The Priory Academy LSST placed an order that required the installation of 62 sets of hardware to be fully completed within a very short time frame. Having worked with ASSA ABLOY in the past we knew they would be able to provide us with an excellent turn around of stock, enabling us to complete the job within the timescale.”
Martin Undrill, Site Manager at The Priory, said:
“The Academy prides itself on providing secure, first-class accommodation for its boarders, so we were relieved that Lincoln Security and ASSA ABLOY were able to provide the service we needed quickly and efficiently, causing minimum disruption to both our students and staff.”

Trade Businesses Split into Digital Doers and Deniers Reveals New Study

Over half of trade businesses are being left behind by the digital revolution according to a new study, allowing their more tech savvy competitors to win new customers at their expense.

IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, invited 10,000 tradespeople to take part in an annual study which examines the marketing habits of trade businesses across the UK.

The findings show a clear split between those companies investing in growing their business using digital marketing, developing effective websites as well as harnessing the potential of Google ads and social media.

59% of businesses admitted that they currently spend nothing marketing their business online, with just under half this number (25%) wanting to harness digital marketing but admitting that they didn’t know where to start.

A hardcore of digital deniers (13%), were insistent that they didn’t need anything more than word of mouth to bring in new work.

In contrast, 33% of businesses are using digital marketing to grow their customer base, spending on average between 1 to 5% of their annual turnover on digital. A smaller number were also using social media as a tool to bring in new business. The most popular was Facebook (12%) followed by Twitter (5%).

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said:
"The results of the study clearly show the growing importance of digital marketing within trade businesses, but also show that many feel they are being left behind as customers use digital media more and more to find trades people with a good reputation.

“Clearly digital marketing isn’t the only thing that’s important, it’s clear from the study that traditional word of mouth is still the dominant way through which people are gaining new work. However, as the growing use of social media as a marketing tool shows, savvy businesses are using digital marketing as a way to tap into people using sites such as Facebook to pass on recommendations.”
To help those wanting to begin using digital marketing to help grow their business, IronmongeryDirect has created a downloadable guide with some basic tips and plans to create further support for both novices and those already investing in digital marketing, plus top tips on how to save hundreds of pounds on marketing activities. The guides can be downloaded from www.IronmongeryDirect.com/toolbox

Wayne adds: "There are simple things all tradespeople can do – even if they are just a one man band – to help them keep up with the changes in how people use the internet to find and choose people for jobs.

“We want to help pass on our expertise as a digital business to help our customers grow and continue to be successful.”

Inspired by the F-Type's gorgeous looks and outstanding dynamic ability, Marcus Piecha - head of PIECHA Design - has now created the Jaguar F-Type Evolution, a bespoke sports car that takes the sleek British Coupe to the next level.

Taking a leaf from motorsport, the distinctive visual enhancements to the front spoiler and side sills take the form of aerodynamically optimised Front-Cup-Wingsand Side-Sill-Wings that add to the cars sporty appearance and improve its high-speed stability.

The large black plastic undertray at the rear of the 3.0-liter V6 powered F-Type has been the cause of many customer complaints, with the two oversized twin tailpipes emerging form the only interesting feature in a large, bland panel.

To remedy this visual shortcoming, PIECHA designed an entirely new, larger rear diffuser. Framed by a colour-coded undertray, this has an extended frame to enhance stability and reduce drag. Meanwhile, the big exhaust outlets are now flanked by stainless steel grille inserts, which also help to break up the visual mass of the diffuser.

The subtle three-piece integrated rear spoiler lip that now sits on the end of the rear hatch lid gives the sloping rear an elegant finishing line while reducing drag and lift over the rear axle. In this case, the factory extendable rear spoiler remains fully functional.

For the more extrovert driver, the optional PIECHA GT rear wing gives the F-Type Coupe a greater motorsport visual connection. The downforce generated by this fixed wing is significantly greater than that of the retractable factory spoiler, whose function is then disabled.

To match the aerodynamic enhancements, a set of lowering springs drops the ride height by 30mm. In combination with the choice of 20 or 21-inch diameter PIECHA DESIGN alloy wheels, the car takes on a wider and more purposeful stance with improvements in handling and grip.

To further sharpen its claws, the Jaguar F-Type can be equipped with the proven PIECHA Power Converter Module for even more spontaneous throttle response.

The PIECHA Design Jaguar F-Type 3.0 V6 Coupe EVOLUTION takes the owning and driving experience of this outstanding sports car to the next level. Similar upgrades for the V8 Coupe and convertible models are also available.

Abloy App and Handbook make Specification Easier

Security expert Abloy UK has updated its hugely successful smartphone app and compliant specifications handbook, offering users all the help they need in specifying the most effective Abloy locking solutions, no matter what the requirements.

The handy Abloy app - available for iOS and Android devices - allows users to find the right door security solution by quickly selecting suitable products for specification or installation. It then utilises GPS to direct users to their nearest Abloy Dealer Centre so the job can be completed quickly and efficiently.

The app can also be used to check price and availability, or send a technical question to the customer services team and receive a swift answer. Updates to the software include information about new door packages, enhanced search functionality, web news and videos.

Users are also able to view courses available at the Abloy Academy, and sign up for specific dates. The Abloy Academy offers a range of courses to help installers learn more about standards and legislation, as well as practical workshops on how to install electric locks, door operators and access control.

In addition to the app, the pocket-sized compliant specifications handbook offers a complete guide to specifying door security solutions, providing an easy reference point for installers, to ensure they are putting the right products on the right door.

The guide is ideal for those who prefer using a physical booklet rather than a mobile device, and it contains information such as product details, technical specifications, and the standards each of the packages meet when installed correctly.

Jon Burke, Marketing Manager for Abloy UK, said:
“When you’re on site or away from your computer and need to specify the right door security solution, the Abloy app and compliance handbook can direct you quickly and easily to the product you need.

“The app makes product selection intuitive, efficient and easier than ever before, as well as providing unprecedented on-site technical support for installers, across all stages of the specification and installation process.

“This new update has made the process even more streamlined, and the compliance handbook is great for those who prefer a pamphlet in their pocket, so if you’re a professional installer, specifier or security manager we have a solution to assist you.”

To download the app, search for ‘The Abloy App’ in the App Store or Google Play, and to request a copy of the compliant specifications handbook e-mail marketing@abloy.co.uk

Pedal Power from Garador

Garador’s Steve Cottle and Geoff Babiy have swapped their high tech work environment for a life on the open road – for a few days anyway as they take part in a major charity bike ride.

They are pedalling in the Paris to Yeovil event to raise money for Rotary Charity Fundraisers.

Every year Garador’s local Rotary club raises money for different charities through its Get Pedalling programme and this year these include the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Cyclists Fighting Cancer.
“Generally each day’s ride is around 50 to 60 miles,” said Steve. “But we have been training and have good bikes, so we are fairly confident we should make it.”
Garador has supported Steve and Geoff with a donation and with a total of over 100 riders taking part, the organisers are hoping lots of money will be raised for these worthwhile charities.
