Could On-site Safety Hold Back Growth of the Construction Industry?

When it comes to industries that encounter hazards day to day, construction comes out on top. Research from HSE found that a quarter of the fatal injuries to workers in the UK occurred in the construction industry across 2021/22.

This shows that there’s still work the UK must do to improve safety for construction workers. But even with room for improvement, it makes us wonder where some of the best places in the world are for workers in the industry.

With some insights from Jonathan Beadle at van leasing company, Van Ninja, we look at the best places to work in construction, where some of the worst locations are, and what those countries towards the bottom of the safety pile should be looking to change to improve their placing on the list.

Construction around the world: breaking down the best and the worst

Workwear Guru, who supplies construction clothing and apparel for sites and companies, conducted a survey in 2021 that looked at the best places to work in construction. These countries were ranked based on the average salaries available, the cost and quality of living in said country, and the safety of working conditions on these sites.

From the findings of the survey, we can see that the top 10 best places for the industry are dominated by countries located in and west of Europe. Switzerland takes first place, followed by the UK in second, and then Belgium. However, this is the overall score and the country with the lowest incident rate for accidents is Poland with just 4% of the workforce reporting injuries while working. Singapore similarly has a low incident rate of 5%, and the UK also has a relatively low rate of accidents at 8%.

On the opposite end of the scale, the list of the 10 worst places to work in construction features locations all over the globe. The worst place in the world for workplace safety is reported to be Myanmar in Asia with an incident rate of 58%.

On-site safety: safety practices that can be implemented

With shocking statistics like over half of construction workers in Myanmar – formerly known as Burma – reporting potentially fatal workplace incidents in construction, it shows that globally more attention can still be paid to improving on-site safety.

Incidents and accidents often happen due to a lack of awareness and preparation. This is why, before even beginning projects, workers should be adequately trained in safety practices that can be implemented to improve job site safety. These should include sections on awareness of the tools they are working with, the cleanliness of the site, and identifying potential hazards before they occur, as well as sections on communication with other members of the workforce to prevent potential hazards from forming.

The training shouldn’t just be down to those who’ll be operating equipment either. Site managers could benefit hugely from extra training focusing on proper supervision, monitoring, and reporting of the sites and any potential incident dangers or those that have occurred. Proper management of documentation and administrative processes around the safety of the workers should be reviewed to make sure they are of an appropriate standard.

Having quality equipment to work with, both in terms of machinery to operate and protective clothing, is crucial to ensuring worker safety. If you’re on a site where a drill is required but the drill bit or body is of poor quality, there is the possibility of the operator of the equipment getting put in harm’s way.

Similarly, there should always be the appropriate equipment for jobs. For example, if you have a lot of heavy goods that need transporting, exploring van leasing options can prove the ideal solution rather than stretching your current equipment thinner.

Industry experts are predicting that construction will continue to grow into the new year. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that the value for new orders was up 22.8% in only the first quarter of 2022. With more projects for companies to work on, an extra emphasis must be placed on worker safety to avoid any potential incidents that could not only injure your workforce but subsequently slow down progress.

Frame Fit From Norseal Fits The Fire Safety Bill

Norseal is launching FrameFit, the ultimate gap remediation solution for fire doors and the quick and simple alternative to the total replacement of defective, nominal, and notional fire doors with excessive gaps.

The system has been fully and rigorously fire-tested, making it the perfect answer to bring non-compliant doors into compliance on the spot.

Even conservative estimates indicate that there are hundreds of thousands of defective fire doors, as well as nominal and notional fire doors in the UK alone that do not currently comply with fire safety standards due to excessive gaps between the leaf and frame.

It is simply impracticable and unfeasible to replace all these non-compliant doors immediately so FrameFit offers a speedy, efficient, and cost-effective way to make these doors compliant immediately while a longer-term replacement programme is planned.

FrameFit will remediate larger gaps to leave the door safe and compliant. The system has been fully tested to all UK and EU standards on all door core types and frame materials, so it is fully compliant with BS 476 Part 22 & BS EN 1634-1, fire retardant up to 60 minutes.

The regulations require that the gaps around fire doors must be between 2 and 4mm around the perimeter and 8mm at the bottom of fire doors (3mm for fire and smoke doors).

Easy and quick to fit on site, FrameFit from Norseal is based on unique preformed fillets of intumescent and charring material, supplied boxed in handy kit form in 5.2m long rolls of 1.5, 3 and 5mm thicknesses to handle any size gaps around and at the bottom of the door.

Regular fire door inspections are now a legal requirement of the Regulatory Reform Order, and, according to the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) 77% of fire doors that failed inspections in 2021 did so because of excessive gaps between the door and the frame.

FrameFit from Norseal will provide inspectors, property managers, fire safety contractors, and facilities managers with a fast, effective and compliant way to make fire doors safe immediately when excess gaps are identified.

FrameFit is available with a same-day dispatch from Norseal’s large stocks. The strips are manufactured in white but are easily over-paintable with oil-based paints. A high-energy version is also available for fire and smoke doors.

Part of the European Athmer Group, Norseal is the number one provider of specialist fire door seal solutions, with a long track record of innovation, developing products which meet and exceed the latest industry standards for fire and smoke protection, acoustic properties, accessibility, and thermal insulation.

The Spring Issue of Door Industry Journal is available online now!

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Spring 2023 issue of Door Industry Journal, the Voice of the UK Door and Gate Industry.

As I write, the sun is finally putting in an appearance and Easter is on the horizon. And with it comes the spring issue of the DIJ. So – before you snaffle that creme egg – let me tell you a bit about this edition:

If you subscribe to our print version, you will notice it’s in a different wrapper. That’s because we’ve gone green! Gone are the old polythene bags, in favour of a paper wrap that’s fully recyclable.

Inside you’ll still find all the latest news and views from across the sector. One piece that brought back memories for me is Garador’s 75th-anniversary story on page 38

Back in the early 1980s, I worked as a Garador Area Manager, covering the southeast. Happy days, but sadly brought to an end in 1985 when Westland, the firm’s then owner, sold it off to Catnic Components during a time later known as the Westland Affair.

Plenty more inside to keep you going. Here are a few highlights:

  • Rowland Door Services celebrates its 40th anniversary (page 8)
  • Ken Price, MD of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association, tells us why we are ‘better together’ (page 10)
  • Another anniversary - Doorfit is celebrating 70 years in the business (page 20)
  • What a day in the life looks like for Stuart Shaw - National Field Sales Manager at Hörmann UK (page 28)
  • Roller door specialist Trojon announces a big new product launch (page 42)
  • A flexible aluminium dock shelter for universal use has arrived, courtesy of mydocking (page 66)
  • A new product ordering system is improving life for HorizAL customers (page 80)
  • Sentry Doors announces the acquisition of E. & S.W. Knowles (page 102)
  • The dhf take on the government’s latest fire safety reform (page 112)
  • Scott Copeland, Category Manager at IronmongeryDirect, takes us through some of the latest door handle options (page 118)

I hope you enjoy both the magazine and your Easter break. I’ll be back before you know it with the DIJ summer issue.

Pothole Damage Forces 2.7 million Cars off the Road

The annual PIT Report (Pothole Impact Tracker) for Kwik Fit, the UK’s leading automotive servicing and repair company, shows that over the last twelve months, pothole damage has forced nearly 2.7million cars off the road.

The report found that in the year to March 2023, 13.1 million drivers suffered damage to their car after hitting a pothole, and of these, one in five had to do without their vehicle for more than a week while it was undergoing repairs.1

57% of British drivers say they have hit at least one pothole a week over the last twelve months, with the impact causing damage to over 13 million cars. The average repair bill faced by each driver was £127, resulting in a total cost to the nation’s motorists of £1.7bn.

Kwik Fit first carried its study into the cost of repairing the damage from pothole impact in 2013. The company’s research shows that since then, the total burden on British motorists has more than doubled - rising by 121%.2 This is despite the number of cars on the nation’s roads increasing by only 10% over the same period.3

The increased costs are reflective of motorists’ responses when asked about the condition of the nation’s roads. More than half of all drivers (51%) say the condition of the roads in their area are worse than ten years ago, with 39% saying they are significantly worse. Only one in eight (13%) say the roads are in better condition than a decade ago.

Nearly half of all drivers (47%) think that a portion of the money the government raises through fuel duty and vehicle excise duty (commonly called ‘road tax’) should be ringfenced for improving road surfaces.

However, with today’s ALARM (Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance)4 report revealing that local authorities need more than £14bn to fix the backlog of carriageway repairs, the challenge for the government is clear. Only one in ten drivers (10%) say they would be prepared to pay more fuel or excise duty for direct spending on road surfaces.

A similar small minority (10%) would be happy to pay more council tax if it was ringfenced for roads in their local area.

Inflation has driven the cost of individual repairs up over the last decade with some drivers being hit especially hard. Although £127 was the average figure over the last year, many drivers had to pay much more than that, with 850,000 drivers having to stump up over £300 to get their car back on the road.

The repair bills faced by older drivers was a little higher than the average figure, with those over 55 typically paying £140, compared to £123 by drivers under 34, possibly a reflection of the older drivers owning more cars that are more expensive to repair. However, despite their lower average repair bill, younger drivers were hit relatively harder than older motorists as almost a quarter (24%) say they had to borrow money to pay for the repairs. This contrasts starkly with those over 55, of whom only 3% had to borrow the cash.

Despite potholes having such an impact on many motorists, less than one in three drivers (30%) have complained to their local council about a pothole, although among those suffering severe damage to their car, such as to their engine, this rises to 75%.

Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, says its important for drivers to report problem potholes, even if they don’t think they have damaged their car.
“We know councils have huge demands on their budgets, but it is better that they are aware of a pothole as early as possible,” he said.
“The condition of road surfaces only goes in one direction, so the longer a problem is left, the more costly it will be to repair. And obviously, in the meantime, the more damage it will be doing to vehicles and causing problems for drivers whose vehicles are off the road.”
If drivers have seen a pothole, Kwik Fit encourages them to report it as councils can only rectify a problem if they are aware of it. For England and Wales the Government has a central webpage which will direct drivers to the correct authority if they are unsure who is responsible, with the Scottish Government offering an equivalent service north of the border.
Roger added: “Drivers who do hit a pothole should make sure they thoroughly check their vehicle to ensure the impact hasn’t done any damage. This may not be obvious at first, because the impact could cause a slow puncture, cracked wheel rim, misalignment or other tyre damage which may not be immediately apparent. We recommend drivers who have experienced a particularly heavy impact to keep a close eye on how their car is handling in the days following the incident and if they have any concerns take it into a garage where it can be put on a ramp and checked thoroughly.”

"Amazon" of Building Supplies set to Spark Price War saving Trade & DIY Thousands

CompareTheBuild.com launched this week at the Homebuilding and Renovating Show, offering savings on thousands of products from industry heavyweights B&Q, Travis Perkins, Selco, Jewson, Wickes and many more.

CompareTheBuild.com is the UK’s first price comparison site for building supplies and has nearly 300,000 searchable products – with more being added all the time.

The building supplies e-commerce startup, helps builders, tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts buy their supplies quickly and efficiently at the lowest price.

Its algorithm creates a live shopping list that works 24/7 to show the lowest prices, meaning users can save on nearly every item. The entire range of supplies is price-checked: building and hardware; tiling and flooring; plumbing and heating; painting and decorating; kitchens and bathrooms, and more.

The company was started by professional plasterer, Joseph Wilson. During his 20-year career, he quoted on jobs of all sizes based on estimates. Over time he learned that the everyday products he was using varied hugely in price, depending on which builder’s merchant he was buying from.

Mr Wilson said:
‘After painstaking research I realised there was nowhere for builders, construction companies, surveyors, property developers and home DIY enthusiasts to compare products and prices. I saw an opportunity to use technology to make the price comparison and purchase process easier, cheaper and more convenient.
‘We’re building a platform that will increase transparency and bring prices down, we hope! Especially in today’s cost of living crisis, CompareTheBuild.com is likely to prove a blessing to many cash-strapped traders and households looking to economize’.
It's forecasted that £27 billion will be spent on DIY in the UK alone in 2023, with around £7 billion of that coming from online sales. Our mission is to save the nation as much of their hard-earned cash as possible.

For more information contact Joe Wilson, Founder on 07399 433467 or email him at joseph.wilson@comparethebuild.com

Bespoke Pocket Doors at the Double!

Bespoke products with a quick turnaround have been thin on the ground in recent years but now Em-B, leading architectural ironmonger, is offering bespoke sized Eclisse single or double pocket doors in just 3-5 working days from the sign off of drawings, at a cost-effective price.

Eclisse single and double pocket door kits in the Unico Classic range for finished walls of 95 or 115mm are the most popular solution for creating sleek, hidden sliding door solutions in homes and commercial settings in the UK.

This quick-turnaround bespoke version of the Eclisse Unico is available in widths from 585-1300mm (single version) and 585 + 585 - 1300 + 1300 (double version) and heights from 500 -2600mm. This means that there is an Eclisse pocket door now available for almost any opening, all available straight to site quickly and easily.

The frame kits come with all the accessories needed to complete a really professional job including maintenance-free track and runners, wooden jambs including dust brushes, and a recessed door post (single version) with integral rubber bumpers.

Sliding doors can open up spaces, providing a flexibility and adaptability in room planning, instantly converting an open plan area into two more intimate spaces. They allow a building’s layout to flow according to the occupants needs and become “sliding boundaries,” at the same time preserving the spatial uniformity characteristic of a home.

They disappear completely into the walls affording rooms the permeability and transparency of an open space free from barriers, but capable of creating strategic divisions when required.

Em-B is a thriving, well-established architectural ironmonger and supplier of door solutions based in Leeds established in 1966. The company regularly win awards for its architectural ironmongery schemes on some of the UK’s most prestigious projects, working for household name architects and clients. Em-B’s success is built on working as a true partner within the construction process from drawing board to installed product and beyond.

Early Design Collaboration Unlocks Functionality at New Business Park

Industrial door specialists, ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems, has helped bring the new Gemini8 Business Park in Warrington to life, supplying a suite of entrance systems which underpin the performance and functionality of the new urban logistics and industrial units.

Gemini8 Business Park is a 119,600 sq ft development which brings 18 new high specification Grade A units to a prominent site just outside of Warrington, providing an ideal location for growing businesses. To maximise the potential of the new industrial site, ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems worked closely with Manchester-based AEW Architects from the initial stages of the project, ensuring design elements could contribute to everyday functionality alongside green credentials.

Several of the buildings on site are designed to utilise the ground floor space as a warehousing area, with office space elevated on a mezzanine level situated at the front of the buildings. While this makes the space more practical for occupants, it did pose a challenge in the initial design stages.

Overhead sectional doors were specified in the design to provide excellent access to each unit, but AEW needed to be certain they could be operated properly and safely – even with the mezzanine level situated directly above leaving a gap of just 475mm to accommodate the mechanisms for the door.

Ian Norburn, Business Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems said:
“Identifying the potential difficulties so early on in the planning stages is a true testament to the foresight and expertise of AEW. It meant we could work with them to develop a solution which would work for the buildings and their occupants”.
“To overcome this challenge we developed a track arrangement which would retain the door’s springs and motor assembly at the door head, working within the parameters of the door and mezzanine level.”
The door’s track arrangement is designed to support the efficient operation of the door, smoothly guiding it upwards when required. Typically, components such as the spring package would be set just above the door, however, with limited space available beneath the mezzanine, another solution was required.

Adapting a Low Lift track design (where the spring package is positioned at the end of the horizontal tracks), was deemed inappropriate for cross traffic inside the building, and so the team at ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems focused on how best to enhance operational safety. By utilising the low position of the track and installing a Standard Low Lift arrangement, the spring package and motor could be positioned directly between the door and the mezzanine level, even in the restricted space available.

Once it had been established that the doors could be accommodated within the building design, AEW also needed to be confident in its ability to deliver on sustainability.

Supporting building efficiency

As a brand-new industrial development, the green credentials of Gemini8 were going to be crucial, with the buildings designed to achieve BREEAM Very Good rating. Across the site, developer Chancerygate had employed several green initiatives – from selecting high-performance insulated cladding through to installing electric vehicle charging points.

The 20 overhead sectional doors supplied and installed by ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems were no exception. Delivering a U-value of 1.1w/m2K, the doors also provide unrivalled levels of insulation to support the building's efforts to maintain consistent internal temperatures and, in turn, reduce energy consumption and running costs.

Additionally, the motor used to operate the overhead sectional doors contributes to greater efficiency. Fast operational speeds mean doors can open and close more quickly, limiting draughts and even supporting improved levels of productivity. Economic low voltage design also ensures low running costs, while doors can continue to operate reliably day after day.
Ian continued: “These days, we’re seeing the need for sustainability becoming just as important as the functionality of the doors themselves, particularly as regulations tighten and buildings are required to perform even more efficiently.
“Selecting the right materials and solutions from the very outset of a project can only support these ambitions, and we’re proud to work with forward-thinking architects and developers to realise the solutions they need to make their designs work for today’s construction needs.”
Gemini8 reached practical completion in Autumn 2022 and it is expected that the development will support employment and economic growth in the North West region. In total, ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems supplied 20 overhead sectional doors and 20 steel-hinged final escape doors, providing reliable access to each of the units.
