Escape Door System benefits for retail environments

Abloy UK has launched a new video demonstrating how its Escape Door System (EDS) can help retailers balance security measures with safe, compliant escape routes in retail environments.

Retail environments are under increasing pressure to tackle issues such as run-out theft and unauthorised access to restricted areas. The video demonstrates how the ASSA ABLOY Escape Door System enables authorised personnel to move efficiently through secure spaces while maintaining control over sensitive areas and exit points.

It highlights how the EDS provides controlled egress and access through panic and emergency escape doors, helping to prevent unauthorised exits without compromising life safety.

A key feature explored in the video is the system's ability to resist forced exits and tampering. Doors remain secure even when subjected to physical pressure, helping to reduce losses, minimise risk and provide security teams with time to assess and respond to incidents.

The video also showcases delayed egress functionality, an important feature for retail settings where attempts at unauthorised exits can be deterred while maintaining compliance with escape regulations.

In addition, viewers can see how the system integrates with Central Management Control (CMC), allowing security personnel to monitor activity, remotely release doors and override delays when required.

During a fire evacuation event, the system automatically releases doors within one second, enabling occupants to exit quickly and without restriction. Even in the event of power loss or certain fault conditions, doors remain accessible for safe egress.

Neil Hughes, Business Development Manager at Abloy UK, said: “Retailers are under constant pressure to reduce losses while ensuring people can leave a building safely and without delay in an emergency.”

“The Escape Door System is designed to meet both of these requirements, providing strong control over unauthorised egress while maintaining compliant escape routes. This video shows how the system works in practice and why it has become an important part of modern retail security strategies.”

DHF launches new best practice guide to help members navigate PSTI requirements

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has published a new Best Practice Guide, A Beginner's Guide to PSTI for members of DHF, to help them understand and comply with the requirements of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act 2022 and associated regulations.

Developed in response to growing concerns around cyber security and the increasing use of connected technologies within the door, gate, hardware and access control sectors, the guide was produced at the request of DHF's Cyber Security Committee Chair, Dave Herbert.

The publication has been designed to provide members with a concise introduction to the PSTI Regulations. It explains which products may fall within scope, clarifies the responsibilities of manufacturers, importers and distributors, and offers straightforward guidance on achieving compliance. The guide also encourages businesses to adopt best practice beyond the minimum legal requirements while helping them avoid potentially significant enforcement action and financial penalties.

“As more products become connected to the internet, cyber security is no longer solely an IT issue,” explains DHF’s Deputy CEO, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “It is increasingly a product compliance and business risk issue. Indeed, many businesses may be unaware that products incorporating connected technology are now subject to specific legal requirements under the PSTI Regulations.

"This is particularly relevant to the door and hardware sector, where technologies such as automated doors and gates, smart locks, access control systems, connected cameras, remote monitoring systems and connectivity hubs are becoming increasingly common. Many of these products may fall within the scope of the legislation.”

The PSTI Regulations came into force on 29th April 2024 and apply to relevant consumer connectable products placed on the market in the UK. The regulations establish a minimum cyber security baseline for connected products, helping to address the growing threat posed by cyber criminals targeting internet-connected devices.

Importantly, responsibility for compliance does not rest solely with manufacturers. Importers and distributors also have legal obligations and must undertake appropriate due diligence to ensure products placed on the market meet the required standards. Businesses throughout the supply chain should therefore review their products, determine whether they fall within scope and ensure that appropriate compliance procedures are in place.

The guide highlights that compliance should not be viewed simply as a regulatory burden. Demonstrating strong cyber security practices can improve customer confidence, strengthen business reputation and help organisations prepare for future regulatory developments.

Among the most important actions identified within the guide are the removal of default or easily guessable passwords, the establishment of a clear vulnerability reporting process, and the communication of how long security updates will be provided for connected products. These measures form the foundation of the mandatory PSTI requirements.

The publication also encourages businesses to review their role within the supply chain, use ETSI EN 303 645 as a benchmark for compliance, prepare robust Statements of Compliance, establish effective vulnerability reporting processes, and consider Secure Connected Device accreditation where appropriate. Members are also reminded that PSTI compliance information must accompany the product and should not simply be published on a website.

The guide notes that financial penalties for non-compliance can reach £10 million or 4% of global turnover, whichever is greater. It also highlights previous research showing that only 27% of manufacturers had a basic vulnerability reporting mechanism in place, underlining the need for greater awareness and action across industry.

“We are encouraging all members to download and review the guide and assess whether their products and business processes meet the requirements of the PSTI Regulations,” concludes Patricia.

The guide is available to members through the members' area of the DHF website: https://bit.ly/4xfVxwU

How the New Police-Backed Accreditation is Reinventing Mobile Safety

The modern smartphone is no longer just a communication tool; it is the remote control for contemporary life. From unlocking front doors and adjusting smart heating to managing finances and navigating dating landscapes, mobile apps hold the keys to our most sensitive data and physical spaces.

Yet, as our reliance on these digital gateways grows, so too does a silent, pervasive vulnerability. Behind the sleek interfaces of millions of apps lies a fragmented security landscape that leaves users exposed to data breaches, financial fraud, and physical stalking...

In response to this escalating digital threat, Secured by Design (SBD) - the official UK police security initiative - has expanded its pioneering 'Secure Connected Device' (SCD) framework to include standalone mobile app certification. Developed in collaboration with the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) and the National Centre for Violence Against Women & Girls and Public Protection (NCVPP), this landmark, police-endorsed standard aims to revolutionise cyber hygiene. By introducing third-party certification, the scheme provides a trusted benchmark, assuring users that accredited apps have implemented rigorous security controls to safeguard personal data.

The Invisible Threat in Our Pockets

The evolution of automated systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) has seamlessly integrated mobile apps into domestic infrastructure. White goods, lighting systems, voice assistants, and security locks are now routinely managed via mobile screens. However, this convenience has created a prime target for cybercriminals. Malicious software, including viruses, trojans, and spyware, is increasingly deployed to exploit weak app architecture, granting unauthorised access to private lives.

The scale of the vulnerability is staggering. Industry benchmarks reveal that a vast majority of mobile apps fail to meet baseline security standards. A 2023 analysis by security firm NowSecure evaluated nearly 6,500 leading mobile apps and discovered that an alarming 95% failed at least one of the seven security categories established by the Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS).

In the UK alone, the digital marketplace is vast; by early 2025, the Google Play store featured more than 25,000 apps built by British developers. When the overwhelming majority of available apps fall short of internationally recognised safety standards, the collective digital attack surface becomes a national security concern. Police crime statistics increasingly reflect this reality. While data rarely isolates insecure apps as a sole variable, it consistently underscores digital platforms as the primary conduit for fraud and cybercrime. Traditional criminal activities are becoming increasingly cyber-enabled, magnified in scale and efficiency by exploiting flawed software.

The Disproportionate Toll on Women and Girls

While weak cyber hygiene poses financial and data risks to all users, the real-world consequences of insecure apps often fall heaviest on women and girls. Insecure apps are frequently weaponised to facilitate offline harm, including harassment, blackmail, and stalking.

A History of Smart Home Abuse

Smart-home abuse is no longer a hypothetical threat; it is happening right now. In 2018, the UK saw one of its first convictions for IoT-related abuse. A man stalked and harassed his former partner by compromising a wall-mounted smart home tablet. Through its connected mobile app, he manipulated the home's heating and lighting systems and routinely eavesdropped on private household conversations.

This crossover from digital vulnerability to physical terror highlights why the SCD scheme applies a universal standard, regardless of what the app does. Whether an app is a complex smart-lock controller or a basic utility tool, the underlying security risks remain identical.

Even apps explicitly designed to protect vulnerable demographics are vulnerable if their l code is weak. An international example is the U.S.-based ‘Tea Dating Advice’ app. Designed as a female-only safety forum with 1.6 million users, the platform allowed women to run background checks on prospective partners and anonymously report abusive behaviour. Despite its protective mission, a catastrophic data breach exposed 72,000 user images - some alongside official identification documents. The resulting fallout triggered widespread doxxing and targeted online harassment, proving that good intentions cannot substitute for robust encryption and rigorous testing.

By extending SCD accreditation across all app categories, SBD aims to combat violence against women and girls (VAWG) at the source, securing the digital tools that intersect with physical environments.

Shared Responsibility

Securing the digital ecosystem cannot rely on a single entity; it requires collective accountability from developers, companies, and regulators. Developers serve as the first line of defence. They bear the responsibility of writing secure code and embedding SCD principles into the earliest stages of software architecture.

However, developers operate within corporate structures. Companies must provide the necessary infrastructure and commercial incentives to ensure that rigorous security protocols are not sacrificed in the rush to market.

Finally, regulators hold the framework together by enforcing essential legal compliance. If any single pillar fails - whether through poor coding, corporate cutting of corners, or weak regulatory oversight - safety is compromised.

Building a Self-Sustaining Ecosystem

The ultimate objective of the SCD accreditation scheme is to shift the market dynamic, creating an ecosystem where digital safety is an expected norm rather than a premium feature. Organisations can accelerate this shift by integrating SCD accreditation directly into their procurement and governance lifecycles. By mandating that only accredited apps are permitted within corporate and institutional frameworks, the business community can establish a non-negotiable standard for digital safety.

When combined with visible customer-facing branding - such as the SCD logo displayed prominently on app store downloads - the scheme leverages consumer demand. Much like the physical Secured by Design branding on windows and doors has influenced security in properties for decades, the digital SCD stamp will empower consumers to vote for privacy with their downloads, forcing unaccredited, insecure competitors to adapt or be held to account.

The Future of Digital Safety

As the lines between physical devices and digital software blur, schemes like SBD's SCD accreditation will serve as a critical bridge. The framework harmonises technical requirements from both national and international standards bodies, translating complex cyber concepts into clear, actionable guidelines. Crucially, the scheme acts as a direct conduit for UK police data, meaning that its security benchmarks are continuously updated to counter real-world crime trends.

As traditional security hardware evolves into IoT-enabled devices, the SCD accreditation provides the definitive stamp of approval, ensuring that an app's digital defences are just as impenetrable as a physical lock. Furthermore, the framework recognises that cyber threats are dynamic. To maintain accreditation, apps must undergo annual testing and face mandatory re-evaluation whenever significant updates are made to their code.

Ultimately, the SCD accreditation will become a fundamental tool for frontline policing. By embedding these standards into police training and victim support protocols, officers will be equipped to confidently guide the public toward certified, secure apps. In doing so, the initiative will systematically shrink the digital attack surface, offering a safer, more resilient connected world for everyone.

Supporting Architects and Inspiring Bespoke Projects

Consort Architectural Hardware will unveil a unique combination of digital innovation and hands-on craftsmanship at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week.

The relationship between architectural design and hardware specification has traditionally been a fragmented one. Today, a greater number of projects require collaborative design tools, and professionals need innovation in this space. Consort Architectural Hardware aims to meet these modern architectural demands with the launch of its intelligent Revit integration software.

With its new Revit integration system, Consort is introducing a connected workflow between architectural models and door scheduling. The advanced digital platform enables architects to upload and analyse Revit models directly within the application, supporting an efficient data-led approach, where door data is interpreted, structured and prepared for hardware scheduling.

Through secure access and a purpose-built Revit plugin, users can establish direct communication between their model and Consort’s platform. With a unique project ID, architects can initiate a structured data extraction process that captures valuable information including door parameters, attributes and key project information straight from the model. Once complete, both the architect and Consort’s team receive confirmation, ensuring transparency and design alignment from the outset.

Following analysis, the workflow can transition seamlessly into the technical stage. A mapping interface aligns Revit parameters with the internal scheduling structure, ensuring critical data - such as room locations, door types, performance requirements and dimensional attributes - is translated accurately. The system then generates a comprehensive door schedule, with minimal manual input required, significantly reducing the risk of errors in the process.

A standout feature of Consort’s new platform is its interactive visual interface, which includes linked 2D and 3D models. With a suite of visuals, users can navigate the project intuitively, selecting doors within the schedule and instantly locating them within the model, or vice versa. This bi-directional functionality further enhances coordination, particularly on complex schemes, and allows for rapid validation of information.

With the door schedule in place, estimators can prepare detailed hardware sets tailored to each door, using Consort’s product data to ensure consistency and compliance throughout. Once finalised, door schedules, specifications, updated parameters and BIM objects are exported back into the Revit model. Each door is also embedded with a hardware set reference and a smart link, providing immediate access to detailed product information, imagery and technical documentation.

Consort is complementing this new digital innovation by showcasing its bespoke product capabilities and material expertise at Clerkenwell Design Week. In partnership with Material Source, Consort’s team of experts are inviting visitors to stand MSS7 between 19th - 21st May 2026, where they can explore products up close and take away samples of finishes and materials. Between metals, stone, leather and specialist finishes, complete freedom will be offered in material selection, with expanded finishing capabilities ensuring colour and surface quality align with project intent.

For more information on Consort’s bespoke capabilities and Revit integration, visit: www.consort-hw.com or email marketing@consort-hw.com

Data Driven Fire Door Safety

Sue Corrick of Allegion UK reviews the expanding role of digital information in building safety and how its use is transforming fire door hardware from passive fire protection to an active data source.

Data drives informed decisions, and in the built environment, the role of information is growing. Where fire safety is paramount to building design, the adoption of digital practice - combined with modern legislation - proceeds to have a greater impact on standards and is reshaping the landscape as we know it.

Before the tragic events of the Grenfell Tower fire, the fire door safety sector accepted a conventual approach, reliant on physical testing, manual record keeping and reactive maintenance procedures. Though, as regulations tighten and the demand for accountability and transparency heightens through updated proposals such as the Construction Products Reform Green Paper, data is now positioning itself at the heart of how modern systems are tested, monitored and maintained.

Above all, the industry must remain focused on improving the structure, quality and usability of digital handover information, in compliance with Regulation 38 and ‘Golden Thread’ requirements. The use of standardised, accessible asset data can further elevate fire safety standards and safe building operation, supporting professionals throughout the supply chain as they navigate hardware specification, installation and maintenance.

And so, as many move towards a more transparent, traceable and digitally integrated model, how does something as mechanical as a fire door closer contribute to a progressively data-reliant environment?

Strengthening certification

Testing has always existed as the foundation of fire door safety standards. Yet, the ‘Green Paper’ proposals are perhaps set to reform the testing and certification environment, with critical gaps being identified in the construction product regulatory framework.

Fire doors and their hardware components endure comprehensive fire resistance tests, durability cycle assessments and sustainability evaluations as a way of generating detailed evidence of a system’s capabilities, but much of this data is often considered inconsistent, missing or unverified.

Historically, this information has been stored in a disconnected system of paperwork, but it is now clearer than ever that testing data should be collected, saved and accessed in a different way to ensure safety claims are credible and independently verifiable.

Following almost a decade of pivotal regulatory updates, the increased governing pressure placed on building design is changing the management of construction products, and with that, third-party testing and unified, structured data files are becoming more valuable. This movement is strengthened by legislation such as the Building Safety Act, which has placed a renewed focus on competency whilst highlighting the importance of traceable, accessible product information.

This shift is altering the way fire door certification and record holding is approached, where:

· Test evidence must clearly demonstrate classifications, limitations and compatibility between components such as door closers, hinges and leaf assemblies

· Assessment reports must be transparent, retrievable and linked directly to a manufacturer’s products

· Digital record keeping is becoming essential for duty-holders, who are being held responsible for products remaining reliable and suitable throughout a project’s lifecycle

Testing data contributes to a single source of truth, made accessible through The Golden Thread of Information - a legal requirement under the Building Safety Act. The ‘Golden Thread’ has been transformative in documenting verified data and acts as an intuitive framework for how product information can be created, maintained and made accessible.

Access to this digital vault of information has become central to compliance by promoting transparency and reducing risk, with the government now proposing a centralised library for all construction products to further expand regulatory coverage and support greater decision-making.

Data makes the difference

Whilst it’s clear how testing and certification can impact product specification, perhaps less understood are the other ways in which data is helping to build a more accurate picture of the built environment and its fire safety systems. Inspection data from the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS), for example, tells us that care and maintenance issues are present in 54% of fire door inspections, reflecting the need for ongoing care post hardware specification and installation.

In truth, data is redefining the role of mechanical fire door hardware components in real time too. Take fire door closers, which are a key component of fire doors, and as such, are an important data contributor when it comes to fire door safety.

Forward-thinking manufacturers are also exploring how data can better support fire safety practice and hardware, such as door closers, can now incorporate stores of data right from the box, with video installation guides made available to installers through QR codes and safety critical data accessible via the ‘Golden Thread’. This modern approach to fire safety management is helping to eliminate guesswork and should be widely viewed as an opportunity to simplify processes for all involved.

Fire door safety will always remain a technical discipline, but in an age where information can be accessed instantly from our fingertips, even a mechanical fire door closer has a digital voice. By combining robust hardware and practical expertise with reliable, accessible data, the industry is paving its way to a safer, more accountable built environment.

ASSA ABLOY Door Group highlights TEMPEST doorset benefits to safeguard data centres

As data centres become one of the world’s fastest growing critical infrastructure verticals, protecting information is no longer limited to cyber security alone. Electromagnetic emanation, where sensitive data can be intercepted from electronic emissions, poses a growing risk in the industry.

Designed for use in high-risk and high-value environments like data centres, secure server rooms, critical national infrastructure and other classified facilities, the TEMPEST door provides electromagnetic shielding and high physical security performance.

Tested to IEEE Std 299-2006, the door delivers shielding effectiveness ranging from 44.7 dB to 121.4 dB across frequencies from 30 MHz to 5 GHz, helping to prevent RF and EM signal leakage that could otherwise be exploited for unauthorised surveillance or data extraction.

TEMPEST offers high RC4 burglary resistance, combining reinforced steel construction, anti-burglary bolts and high-class locking systems providing a robust barrier against physical attacks. The doorset has also been engineered for integration into Faraday cages, SCIFs and secure RF rooms, ensuring a complete approach to both cyber and physical security.

The TEMPEST doorset has customisable sizes and finishes, which aligns security performance with architectural design and operational needs that are common in modern data developments.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Door Group, said: “Critical infrastructure is always evolving, and the TEMPEST door has been developed to meet the growing need for solutions that don’t just protect access, but information itself.

“By addressing both electromagnetic and physical security risks, it will help the facilities managers of data centre and other high-risk environments meet compliance standards and safeguard their premises, assets and information.”

The importance of physical security in data centres

Brian Sofley, Managing Director of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland Door Group, discusses why physical security deserves more attention in the digital infrastructure landscape and how rethinking physical access is key to building resilience in data centres.

Data centres in the UK have a vital role in keeping the country’s digital, financial and government systems online. With 39 per cent of the UK market seeing cyber-attacks linked to physical security breaches and 31 per cent of data centres reporting unauthorised access attempts, the demand for strong security measures is growing.

In 2023, physical breaches accounted for 28 per cent of catastrophic data events, pushing data centres to invest in integrated security solutions to reduce risks and provide operational resilience. Metal theft is also a growing problem for the industry with sites being targeted repeatedly, even after cables are replaced.

Protecting against intrusion and theft

Security doors play a vital role in protecting physical boundaries of data centres as these environments often contain sensitive information, expensive infrastructure and equipment critical to national and commercial operations. A physical breach can have significant consequences, from service outages to data loss, not to mention reputational damage.

By resisting forced entry, security doors act as a deterrent as well as a physical defence. For facilities that operate with minimal staffing or those that rely on remote monitoring, a secure door can slow down or prevent unauthorised access long enough for response teams to be alerted and act. This is particularly important for sites that are not in constant use.

Security rated solutions such as ASSA ABLOY Powershield steel doors, are tested to standards including LPS 1175 and can be tailored to site specific threat levels, helping operators align physical protection with their security strategies.

Electromagnetic security

Every electronic device emits electromagnetic radiation and at data centre sites, this carries sensitive information. Leaked signals can be intercepted and exploited meaning hackers and intelligence agencies could potentially reconstruct and steal sensitive information.

A more advanced threat, known as TEMPEST attacks, involves the use of electromagnetic leaks for covert surveillance on electronic devices, making it a critical concern for data centres and other high security environments.

Shielded enclosures, such as Faraday cages, block electromagnetic signals by using conductive materials that prevent signal leakage. Electromagnetic emanation resistant doors, such as the ASSA ABLOY TEMPEST Door, are specifically designed to prevent signal escape from secure rooms.

Additionally, RF filtering and grounding helps minimise unwanted emissions from power and data lines, while TEMPEST approved equipment is engineered to reduce electromagnetic radiation and ensure compliance with security standards.

Tailored solutions for CNI

No two facilities are exactly the same and so ASSA ABLOY Door Group provides tailored solutions designed for specific operational needs and threat levels of each site.

For perimeter, plant room or operations hall use, Powershield steel doors deliver robust resistance to physical attack and reduce risk of fire spread. Internally, such as office areas or circulation corridors, Safeguard timber doors offer equally high security; and this is complimented by the SMARTec timber door range offering fire and acoustic performance, both with finishes that support environment aesthetics. For sensitive locations such as UPS rooms or generator halls, acoustic or blast rated doors provide added protection and control.

Durability

While not open to the public, doors in data centres are used constantly, particularly those within equipment rooms, corridors, plant spaces and emergency exits. This continuous usage puts stress on door hardware over time.

Durable door hardware including hinges, closers and handles are not just an asset used to avoid failure. They also maintain the protective functions doors are designed to perform, be that fire resistance, acoustic isolation or security control.

Fire safety and compliance

In data centre facilities, fire risk doesn’t just pose a threat to people and equipment. It also presents serious physical security concerns. A fire can weaken building structures, disable security systems and force emergency evacuations that can create vulnerabilities in perimeter control. If a fire door fails to perform as intended, a fire can become a point of physical compromise.

Reliable fire doors help protect escape routes and emergency access points, keeping them secure while remaining operational under threats. Regular inspections and proper maintenance are essential as if a fire door does not close fully or is warped from wear, it not only fails compliance but weakens overall site security.

Asset Management

Ensuring a traceable link between the design, specification, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance of door solutions is increasingly important in the data centre sector. In environments where uptime is essential and compliance is highly regulated, a well-documented and coordinated approach to physical infrastructure is integral for long term resilience.

ASSA ABLOY’s Openings Studio™ is a BIM software solution, that integrates with design software to create and visualise openings for complete door, frame and hardware schedules and specifications. It supports the specification process and beyond, by creating 3D models of tailored door frame and hardware solutions, which can be incorporated within the building model or viewed using the door visualisation tool.

The platform extends beyond design, offering data-driven support during manufacturing and installation. Contractors can access specifications for quality inspections, ensuring door systems are installed to meet the intended standards, reinforcing the Golden Thread and the Building Safety Act 2022, as well as supporting ongoing maintenance and operational needs.

For data centre sites where every element must perform seamlessly, using BIM to manage door systems means convenience and resilience. It also supports regulatory compliance and ensures that every decision is fully traceable and aligned with the operational priorities of the site.
