From Lock Evolution to Smart-Locking Revolution

Since its inception over twenty years ago, iLOQ has been shaking up the traditional locking industry.

First with its digital-key-based solutions, then with its keyless, smartphone-based solutions, but always with its battery-free mindset. Now, it has taken another giant leap forward in access management by adopting its revolutionary new software.

With the expansion of the Internet of Things, more and more physical products can now be connected to the Internet. This provides vast amounts of data that will help to create not only added value for customer segments but also a better and faster experience for end users.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that companies are looking to move from being purely hardware providers to creating software and analytics-driven solutions.

Better, smarter, more tailored

Think about the evolution in the car industry. Today’s onboard computers give manufacturers a wealth of information on location, performance, and even the car’s passengers. This has helped them design better, smarter, and more tailored modes of transport.

What kind of impact can this have on the locking industry? iLOQ has traditionally been a B2B company. Its initial focus was on helping building owners increase the value of their properties by maximising security and minimising lifecycle costs.

iLOQ also considers the people who manage the locking systems—making their lives easier by offering easy-to-use software that helps them quickly and efficiently program, update, and even cancel numerous access rights with the click of a few buttons.

Going forward, iLOQ will consider itself to be more of a B2B2C company. It wants to enhance the experience of the people who use its products. Of course, they have always been on the radar, and iLOQ has made it easy for them to move around all their access points using just their smartphone as a key. Now, it is taking the user experience to the next level.

A new ecosystem

iLOQ will continue to provide access, albeit with solutions that go way beyond the traditional lock and key. What is changing is that it will offer a new ‘ecosystem’ that brings so much more.

The revolutionary business model comes from providing a B2B solution that can be commanded, used, and managed by the consumer. By working hard to understand their environments and tasks and identify their needs, iLOQ has adopted a user-centric design to fulfil their requirements and promote mutually beneficial products, services, and solutions.

With its own hardware (for example, locks and padlocks), phone keys, apps, Online readers, administration solutions and portals, iLOQ has mastered the whole portfolio and end-to-end opening process.

iLOQ is also enabling value-adding integrations and co-creating its new offering with ecosystem partners. This is an exciting era for iLOQ and a step change for its customers and partners.

About iLOQ

iLOQ is a technology disruptor that has revolutionised the locking industry by replacing mechanical locking to make life limitless. Battery- and cable-free smart locks maximize security, minimize lifecycle costs and enhance the value and sustainability of properties and infrastructures. iLOQ operates in more than 55 countries with over 1,800 partner locations globally. In 2023, iLOQ had a turnover of €141,3 million and more than 320 employees.

Mazda supports 2024 Race of Remembrance with Mazda MX-30 R-EV course car in unique poppy ‘art car’ livery

The tenth running of the Race of Remembrance sees Mission Motorsport once again mark Remembrance Day with their now established and unique motorsport event held at Anglesey Circuit in North Wales.

This year 57 teams will compete for 12 hours across two days with the respectful pause for reflection at 11.00am on Sunday when the cars head to the pitlane for a Service of Remembrance.

Mazda UK has been a supporter of Mission Motorsport since its founding in 2012 and of the Race of Remembrance since its inception a decade ago.

In 2015, the Mk4 MX-5 poppy ‘art car’ took part in the race honouring the sacrifices made by service personnel and their families.

This year Mazda is once again proud to collaborate with Mission Motorsport to create a second Mazda poppy ‘art car’.

Designed and implemented by the livery team at Mission Motorsport, this special Mazda e-Skyactiv MX-30 R-EV will lead the field as the course car at the 2024 Race of Remembrance.

The race started at 3pm on Saturday, running into darkness until 10pm, the cars and drivers rested and repaired overnight before racing resumed at 9am on Sunday.

Most importantly, the circuit falls silent at 11am on Sunday when more than 1,000 people will pay their respects, before resuming racing to the finish.

Across the weekend, competitors, spectators and officials will not miss the poignant livery of the Mazda e-Skyactiv MX-30 R-EV course car.

Commenting on Mission Motorsport’s latest ‘art car’ creation and Mazda’s involvement in the Race of Remembrance, Mission Motorsport CEO, James Cameron, said:

“We adore this project, back in 2015 we sought to combine art therapy with a motorsport build and were astonished at the end result - and to develop that theme this year our second Mazda art car has involved a group of injured servicemen and women to produce a design that reflects remembrance, but also new life, energy and hope.”

He added:

“This MX-30 R-EV will be in use across the country in support of the Armed Forces Community and will have a particularly poignant role as the course car at the centre of the 10th running of the Race of Remembrance at Anglesey Race Track this weekend”.

The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV and its rotary generator provide a unique series plug-in hybrid that offers new ways of using a car as a battery electric vehicle.

The R-EV has a 17.8KWh battery and a 53-mile pure electric range, while using Mazda’s unique rotary engine technology, the all-new 830cc single-rotor petrol engine acts as a generator to enable longer distance drives without range or charging anxiety.

With no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels, the rotary unit simply acts as a generator, ensuring the MX-30 R-EV always drives via the electric motor to deliver a seamless EV driving experience.

Commenting on the reveal of the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV poppy ‘art car’, Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda Motors UK, said:

“The poignant and stunning livery of this Mission Motorsport poppy car is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices and bravery of our service personal and their families.

“I’m delighted that once again Mazda can play a small part in assisting Mission Motorsport to honour this with the Race of Remembrance and their fantastic ongoing work with service veterans”

Jeremy added:

“it will be great to see the Mazda MX-30 R-EV on track as the course car at this unique motorsport event.”

Taking place in aid of Mission Motorsport and their work to provide respite, rehabilitation, vocational training and support to veterans, the 10th running of the Race of Remembrance takes place this weekend at Anglesey racetrack in North Wales.

Mission Motorsport

The Forces' Motorsport Charity, whose motto is “Race Retrain Recover” is MoD's competent authority for motor sport as a recovery activity initiative and is supported by Help For Heroes and Walking with the Wounded.

As part of the MoD's Career Transition Partnership, the charity helps those leaving the military under medical discharge to find employment in the automotive industry.

A City and Guilds training provider, Mission Motorsport's Training Wing delivers Level 3 Diploma courses and full apprenticeships which allow service leavers to bridge the gap between military service and second careers as civilians, beyond injury.

A New Leading Lady at Garador

Leading British garage door manufacturer Garador has just enhanced its management team with the appointment of Sam Todd as the company’s new Commercial Manager.

Sam has been with the company since 1998, when she joined Garador after studying business at college. Working her way up through various roles, including Customer Centre Manager and Internal Accounts Manager, Sam brings to her new position a wealth of hands-on experience.

Now, as Garador’s Commercial Manager, Sam will be involved in a wide range of commercial aspects, including financial and growth strategies, and will also support Garador’s national sales management team.

Sam says she wouldn’t have progressed so far in her career without the support of Garador.

“In my 26 years with the company, I have seen first-hand how training and flexibility can really help all aspects of a workforce and business,” she said. “Garador supported me through adapting work requirements when my children were young and also sponsoring further training for me; thanks to their support, I was able to return part-time to college to obtain my HNC in Business  and Finance.”

In her years with the company, Sam says one area of change that has been particularly noticeable has been the range of products.

“Of course, a lot of this change is thanks to advances in technology,” Sam said. “This has affected almost all parts of the company, from the new technically advanced paints that we use today, with their superb durability, finishes and depth of colour and the computer-controlled machinery we use in our manufacturing and production processes right up to our communications with customers and even energy sourcing from the solar panels on the roof here.

“It has all come in gradually, but looking back to when I first started, the changes in the company over the years have been really quite dramatic,” she added.

Sam’s appointment will allow Emma Hannam the opportunity to focus on the future strategic direction of the business and the wider elements within the organisation, with ongoing support for the Sales and Commercial functions.

“We are delighted with Sam’s new appointment,” said Emma. “Her experience with Garador will bring additional expertise into our current management team and we wish her every success in her new position.

Sam's appointment as Garador's new Commercial Manager adds to an already well-established management team with over 117  years of combined experience within the manufacturing industry. This move is sure to strengthen Garador’s existing management structure.

Home Security Needs Solved with Ironmongerydirect

With the dark winter months approaching, IronmongeryDirect is encouraging trade professionals to talk to their customers about a belt and braces approach to home security.

Here are some recommended and reliable solutions available from the UK’s leading online ironmongery specialist.

For properties with external wooden doors, IromongeryDirect has a wide choice of nightlatches available from top trade brands to help ensure they’re well secured.

The Yale 89 Double Locking Nightlatch features a key-operated double locking mechanism, which prevents the handle from turning on the inside if intruders break the door glazing or an adjacent window in an attempt to gain entry.

IronmongeryDirect’s range also includes over 1,000 mortice locks, latches, cylinders, and multipoint door lock solutions to suit a range of project requirements.

For uPVC or composite doors, installing a Yale 3-star anti-snap double cylinder provides greater defence with anti-pick, anti-bump, anti-screw, anti-pull, and anti-drill lock protection.

Plus, with built-in anti-snap, if an intruder attempts to break the lock, the front of the cylinder will be sacrificed to give way, leaving less of the cylinder vulnerable to attack.

It’s also important to ensure the security of any outbuildings on the property, such as garages, sheds, or offices, in addition to securing doors and windows.

For this, the easy-to-install Yale Wireless PIR Motion Detection / Sensor Shed & Garage Alarm which sounds a 100dB siren to alert when motion is detected within a 12m range is ideal.

Alternatively, the Yale Wireless App Enabled Alarm, which is also simple to install, has a 30m range, making it convenient to monitor the central property and external buildings close by remotely from a smart phone.

The system is also expandable with up to 30 HAS alarm accessories, helping ensure any property is thoroughly secure and protected, providing peace of mind.

IronmongeryDirect is the UK’s leading online ironmongery specialist, with over 50 years of trusted experience and over 18,000 products in stock.

Partnered with leading couriers, customers can order by 9pm for next day delivery (4pm on Saturdays) or choose Click & Collect from over 10,000 DPD parcel shops nationwide.

Find out more about IronmongeryDirect’s selection of security products here: www.IronmongeryDirect.co.uk

Enhancing Internal Spaces, Adding Light & Luxury!

Residential and commercial property owners always seek to improve and enhance how they utilise their internal spaces, making more rooms for increased multi-purpose whilst maintaining natural light and maximising the space available.

Demand for internal glazed doors is on the increase; due to their slim sightlines and sleek contemporary design, end users are increasingly requesting to include them in their renovations and designs. Internal glazed doors have several benefits:

  • They enable maximum light into any room as opposed to other options of partitioning
  • Internal glazed doors are highly energy efficient; the flow and distribution of natural sunlight minimises the need for artificial lighting reducing energy bills and consumption
  • Glass panels are also excellent insulators which in turn help in the noise reduction and soundproofing between spaces

Astra Windows Director, David Jackson explains:

“Trade interest for internal glazed doors has soured in recent years; homeowners are regularly being drawn to the use of incredible looking aluminium internal glazed doors to create more aesthetically pleasing living spaces.”

He continues:

“Our internal door & fixed glazed screening system have super slim sightlines and a luxurious modern heritage look, which the trade informs us that their customers are loving!

“These features make them the ideal product for end users and homeowners who want to create a bespoke glazed interior partition to separate rooms whilst maintaining optimum levels of natural light and the pleasant aesthetic of an open-plan ambience.”

Astra Windows can fabricate an entire suite of matching internal doors produced from the same door profile to ensure consistency across the range.

Their internal doors are available as hinged, pivot, sliding, pocket or bi-fold configurations, allowing for design continuity across your projects.

Additionally, Astra Window’s internal door & fixed-glazed screening system offer:

  • Full range of door configuration options using a single system
  • Soft-close and soft-open options
  • Lock solutions available
  • Easy installation
  • Concealed hinges
  • Minimal sightlines
  • Fast lead times
  • Suitable for domestic and commercial projects

David continues:

“At Astra Windows, we fabricate only the highest quality materials made available to us from the best systems houses in the UK.

“This provides our trade installers with complete peace of mind that you can fit and forget every time you buy from Astra Windows - knowing that your end user will always be fully satisfied and delighted with their new install.

“Regardless of specification, design or end-user taste, our fabricating excellence and customer service will ensure that any trade project requirements are not simply met; they are exceeded!”

Garador says it is indeed All About Size!

When Garador started manufacturing garage doors over 75 years ago, cars were small, and garages were of a standard size.

Today, with cars coming in a vast range of sizes and the use of garages changing, demand for different-sized garage doors is increasing. Top-of-the-range developers build larger garages for discerning customers; individual homeowners may be looking to renovate a specifically sized garage; standard-sized doors simply don’t address modern needs.

British garage door manufacturer Garador is recognised as one of the leading companies that offer a full range of different-sized garage doors. Most of these doors don’t carry any surcharge for specialist sizing, they are part of Garador’s extensive standard garage door collection, and with widths right up to 5500mm and over, it means sourcing a garage door for a specific development or build has never been easier.

As a general rule of thumb, the dimensions of a standard single garage door used to be considered to be 2,134mm x 2,134mm and a double door 4,267mm x 2,136mm, but today really, there is no average size as housing and requirements change.

Instead, Garador offers a massive choice of heights and widths for its garage doors. A good example of its flexibility in sizing is the number of different dimensions available on its top-selling steel panel up and over the Carlton door.

This popular door is available in an astonishing selection of 57 standard single-door sizes, from 1984mm x 1830mm right up to 3049mm x 2136mm. Standard double-door sizes also come in an extensive range, up to 4879mm x 2136mm. At slightly more cost, purpose-built Carlton range doors can be built right up to 5000mm x 2136mm.

And this is just for the traditionally popular Carlton design. Doors from other ranges are available with an even greater selection; for instance, a standard door in Garador’s linear up-and-over range goes right up to 5500 x2250, or you move up to the fabulous looking GaraRoll timber effect roller doors, and they can go right up to 6162mm width.

AC Cars to unveil AC Ace Classic electric at SEMA 2024 with TREMEC

AC Cars, Britain’s oldest active vehicle manufacturer, will unveil its brand-new sports car, the AC Ace Classic electric at the SEMA 2024 show with electrified performance technologies partner TREMEC Electric GT.

A new version of the recently announced AC Ace Classic and AC Ace Bristol Classic, the car was conceived at AC Cars’ advanced facility on the UK’s south coast, before completion in the US, to deliver a timeless style of motoring energised by the latest electric powertrain technology.

TREMEC’s unmatched heritage in Performance Technologies, which includes its Advanced Electrification Capabilities, made it the obvious partner for this new roadster from the British company that can trace its roots back to 1901.

Evocative of the origin story of the famous car that the original AC Ace evolved into, the AC Cobra, the chassis, coachwork and interior of each vehicle will be hand crafted before receiving their electrified performance powertrain.

TREMEC Electric GT’s turnkey eGT413 Modular EV platform is fully integrated into the AC Ace and is designed to elicit a powerful driving experience in this most iconic of sports cars.

With 300 eHorse Power (225 kW), a 72 kWh battery package, and a sub 1,134 kg (2,500 lb) curb weight the AC Ace delivers excellent performance.

DC Fast Charging combined with a 200+ miles of range per charge provide an extremely functional and reliable roadster.*

Pairing traditional skills pair with advanced carbon-fibre for the bodywork, and the electrified powertrain providing staggering speed, all vehicles will arrive with a hand-finished interior.

Speaking ahead of unveiling David Conza, CEO of AC Cars, said:

“We are extremely excited to have TREMEC as our electrified performance technologies partner for the new AC Ace Classic electric.

The calibre of its work, and the depth of knowledge has been instrumental in developing a car both companies are incredibly proud of.”

Antonio Herrera, Managing Director of TREMEC added:

“To be working with such a historically significant marque as AC Cars and to be delivering Electrifying Performance to such an iconic design, really demonstrates our approach to revolutionising automotive powertrains.”

Reservations and orders for the new AC Ace electric are now open, with the unique sports car starting at $275,000 before local sales and state taxes.

Deliveries will start in 2025 for a limited number of cars. More details and advance registration will be available here.

The Return of the AC Ace

The AC Ace Classic electric and AC Ace Bristol Classic electric are a new chapter for one of the all-time great British sports cars.

Capturing the halcyon days of roadsters, it uses cutting edge construction techniques to deliver benchmark ride and handling.

An original-type chassis, carbon-fibre bodywork and a modern powertrain blend seamlessly with the iconic styling to deliver an unmatched driving experience.

Throughout the company’s 123-year history, no other model from AC Cars’ past has the same significance as the AC Ace.

With an innovative chassis for its time, and a lightweight aluminium body it gained the respect of enthusiasts and racers alike for its everyday drivability and competition pace.

This is the car that would eventually transform into AC Cobra of legend.

The AC Ace was no stranger to racing success in the US, and proved highly effective at the SCCA National Championships.

Very popular amongst private owners, it dominated the E Production class - winning three years running at the Sebring 12-Hour race.

The AC Ace was clearly highly respected, and in 1958 influential magazine Sports Car Illustrated declared the car: “…as close to a racing sports car you can get and still have a ‘streetable’ machine.”

The new electrified AC Ace will be available in two distinct personalities of car – reflecting the evolution of the original AC Ace over its 10-year production run 1953-1963.

For fans of the later cars the AC Ace Classic electric uses the open grille design of the AC Ace before its transformation into the famed AC Cobra, while the AC Ace Bristol Classic electric employs the earlier ‘smiling face’ that graced the model for its launch in 1953. Both models feature graceful rolling flanks and wheel arches, in contrast to the flat-sided original design.

As befitting the return an archetypal name, the AC team have employed traditional techniques to create and refine the car’s graceful lines.

However, this will still allow for a precision carbon-fibre bodywork to be crafted at the company’s facility on the UK’s south coast.

Immensely strong, yet light, the work employs the same techniques as AC Cars’ flagship model, the AC Cobra GT Roadster.

Cars for US customers will be shipped to TREMEC’s North American Manufacturing Facilities where the electric powertrain will be fitted and the cars readied for delivery.

The new AC Ace electrification project is the beginning of an Electrified Performance partnership between TREMEC and AC Cars.

Unveiled at SEMA 2024 on the TREMEC stand (#21455), the new AC Ace Classic electric and AC Ace Bristol Classic electric will be delivered as brand new, road registered cars.

Priced at $275,000 before tax and any personalisation or bespoke options, they will be available as left-and-right-hand drive and intended for US as well as UK clients.

Each car will bear an official chassis number, denoting it as a true AC and a descendent of the historic AC Ace.

More details and advance registration will be available here.

European Door Sets appoints new Managing Director

EDSi is delighted to announce the appointment of David Oldfield as their new managing director, effective in October.

David has over 34 years of experience and knowledge not only from the Timber merchant and Door manufacturing sector but also from his work in the industry with the British Woodworking Federation and other trade associations.

Starting his career as a wood machinist in the timber industry at the age of 16 with Arnold Lavers, David has worked in a variety of areas in the business, including operations, sales, purchasing and lately into senior management.

After 34 years of working for one organisation, he is now set for a new challenge with EDSi.

David will be working closely with Paul Bailey, who have many years of working together as Directors of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF).

Both Paul and David have been very pivotal in the woodworking and joinery industry, with a long list of achievements.

Both have held the position as President of the federation, with Paul also working as Treasurer for several years.

David has been involved in developing the BWF’s Fire Door Alliance, serving as Chairman for over 10 years, working in collaboration with timber door manufacturers and its suppliers, championing third party certification.

Paul Bailey said:

“We are excited for David to join the business, his wealth of knowledge and industry expertise only adds to our own, and further supports the team so the business can continue to develop and grow.

“Given that David worked so long for his last employer, over 34 years, and our business is in its 34th year of trading we are pleased he chose to come to EDSi to continue his career.

“He will resume the day to day running of the business, alongside the rest of the Directors from November and we are all looking forward to working with him.”

David Oldfield said:

“Having been with my previous employer for so long, it was always going to take something special and unique to make that move away.

“I have known Paul and the business for over 20 years, and I am proud that they have asked me to join and continue to develop what is already a great business.”

EDSi has spent over 30 years delivering high-performance, bespoke, expertly manufactured timber fire door sets and associated joinery products to exciting projects across the United Kingdom.

Manufacturing everything in-house enables them to have full control of their expertly developed processes as they work with you every step of the way.

From initial concepts through to practical completion EDSi offer highly professional services and solutions unique to your project’s requirements.
