Escape Door System benefits for retail environments

Abloy UK has launched a new video demonstrating how its Escape Door System (EDS) can help retailers balance security measures with safe, compliant escape routes in retail environments.

Retail environments are under increasing pressure to tackle issues such as run-out theft and unauthorised access to restricted areas. The video demonstrates how the ASSA ABLOY Escape Door System enables authorised personnel to move efficiently through secure spaces while maintaining control over sensitive areas and exit points.

It highlights how the EDS provides controlled egress and access through panic and emergency escape doors, helping to prevent unauthorised exits without compromising life safety.

A key feature explored in the video is the system's ability to resist forced exits and tampering. Doors remain secure even when subjected to physical pressure, helping to reduce losses, minimise risk and provide security teams with time to assess and respond to incidents.

The video also showcases delayed egress functionality, an important feature for retail settings where attempts at unauthorised exits can be deterred while maintaining compliance with escape regulations.

In addition, viewers can see how the system integrates with Central Management Control (CMC), allowing security personnel to monitor activity, remotely release doors and override delays when required.

During a fire evacuation event, the system automatically releases doors within one second, enabling occupants to exit quickly and without restriction. Even in the event of power loss or certain fault conditions, doors remain accessible for safe egress.

Neil Hughes, Business Development Manager at Abloy UK, said: “Retailers are under constant pressure to reduce losses while ensuring people can leave a building safely and without delay in an emergency.”

“The Escape Door System is designed to meet both of these requirements, providing strong control over unauthorised egress while maintaining compliant escape routes. This video shows how the system works in practice and why it has become an important part of modern retail security strategies.”

DHF is set to transform the industry with Building Hardware training launch

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has launched a new accredited training programme designed to give professionals across the building hardware sector the knowledge and recognised qualifications needed to support competence and career development.

DHF Core Competencies: Understanding Building Hardware is an innovative online learning programme leading to an Ofqual-regulated Level 2 certificate, accredited by the Awarding Body for the Built Environment (ABBE).

Developed for product managers, customer service teams, trade counter operatives and anyone working in or looking to enter the building hardware sector, the flexible programme provides a solid grounding in building hardware fundamentals while enabling learners to build specialist knowledge through a range of product-specific modules.

It is also ideal for employee induction and ongoing professional development. All learners complete a mandatory Core Module, comprising six guided learning units and multiple-choice assessments, before selecting at least one of 12 Product Modules. Additional modules can be purchased at any time, enabling learners to tailor their learning to their role and responsibilities.

On successful completion, learners receive a DHF Level 2 Certificate in Core Competencies: Understanding Building Hardware, as well as an Ofqual-branded certificate from ABBE. The certificate also lists every product module completed, providing employers with clear evidence of an individual's knowledge and achievement. To support learning, every participant can download a dedicated study guide containing module learning outcomes, guided note-taking sections and prompts to reinforce key concepts throughout the course.

"This programme, which launches on 30th July, represents a step change for the building hardware sector and is, without doubt, one of the most significant investments DHF has made in developing the competence of our building hardware industry," explains DHF’s Chief Executive, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.

"From the outset, we listened carefully to our members to understand the knowledge gaps that existed across manufacturing, distribution, technical support, and sales. We then developed a programme that directly addresses those needs while aligning it with the CPA's White Paper on Construction Product Competence, which has since evolved into the draft BS 8670-2 standard. As an industry, we believe we are ‘ahead of the curve’ by providing a qualification that reflects both current and emerging competence expectations."

The ABBE Level 2 Certificate in Core Competencies: Understanding Building Hardware is an Ofqual-regulated qualification, giving learners a nationally recognised qualification that provides employers with clear evidence of the knowledge element of the Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours (SKEB) framework. It creates a credible, structured route for individuals to develop professionally, while giving employers confidence that their people have acquired knowledge that is directly relevant to their role.

The programme is delivered through the DHF Training Academy, built on the digital learning platform that DHF invested in back in 2019. This provides learners with the flexibility to study at their own pace, while enabling managers, HR teams and training professionals to monitor learner engagement, progress and achievement through a dedicated management portal. It ensures organisations can actively manage competence across their workforce rather than simply delivering one-off training.

“We are incredibly proud to add this qualification to DHF's portfolio,” concludes Patricia. “We believe it will transform the way building hardware competence is developed, providing our industry with a robust, future-proof training pathway that supports individuals, strengthens businesses and ultimately raises professional excellence throughout the entire supply chain.

"We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this publication, particularly our Working Group Committees (WGCs), members, industry experts and partners, whose knowledge, time and commitment continue to strengthen our work and help promote standards across the industry.”

The programme is initially available exclusively to DHF members from July 2026 , with broader industry access planned as part of the next phase of the programme’s rollout.

DHF launches new best practice guide to help members navigate PSTI requirements

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has published a new Best Practice Guide, A Beginner's Guide to PSTI for members of DHF, to help them understand and comply with the requirements of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act 2022 and associated regulations.

Developed in response to growing concerns around cyber security and the increasing use of connected technologies within the door, gate, hardware and access control sectors, the guide was produced at the request of DHF's Cyber Security Committee Chair, Dave Herbert.

The publication has been designed to provide members with a concise introduction to the PSTI Regulations. It explains which products may fall within scope, clarifies the responsibilities of manufacturers, importers and distributors, and offers straightforward guidance on achieving compliance. The guide also encourages businesses to adopt best practice beyond the minimum legal requirements while helping them avoid potentially significant enforcement action and financial penalties.

“As more products become connected to the internet, cyber security is no longer solely an IT issue,” explains DHF’s Deputy CEO, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “It is increasingly a product compliance and business risk issue. Indeed, many businesses may be unaware that products incorporating connected technology are now subject to specific legal requirements under the PSTI Regulations.

"This is particularly relevant to the door and hardware sector, where technologies such as automated doors and gates, smart locks, access control systems, connected cameras, remote monitoring systems and connectivity hubs are becoming increasingly common. Many of these products may fall within the scope of the legislation.”

The PSTI Regulations came into force on 29th April 2024 and apply to relevant consumer connectable products placed on the market in the UK. The regulations establish a minimum cyber security baseline for connected products, helping to address the growing threat posed by cyber criminals targeting internet-connected devices.

Importantly, responsibility for compliance does not rest solely with manufacturers. Importers and distributors also have legal obligations and must undertake appropriate due diligence to ensure products placed on the market meet the required standards. Businesses throughout the supply chain should therefore review their products, determine whether they fall within scope and ensure that appropriate compliance procedures are in place.

The guide highlights that compliance should not be viewed simply as a regulatory burden. Demonstrating strong cyber security practices can improve customer confidence, strengthen business reputation and help organisations prepare for future regulatory developments.

Among the most important actions identified within the guide are the removal of default or easily guessable passwords, the establishment of a clear vulnerability reporting process, and the communication of how long security updates will be provided for connected products. These measures form the foundation of the mandatory PSTI requirements.

The publication also encourages businesses to review their role within the supply chain, use ETSI EN 303 645 as a benchmark for compliance, prepare robust Statements of Compliance, establish effective vulnerability reporting processes, and consider Secure Connected Device accreditation where appropriate. Members are also reminded that PSTI compliance information must accompany the product and should not simply be published on a website.

The guide notes that financial penalties for non-compliance can reach £10 million or 4% of global turnover, whichever is greater. It also highlights previous research showing that only 27% of manufacturers had a basic vulnerability reporting mechanism in place, underlining the need for greater awareness and action across industry.

“We are encouraging all members to download and review the guide and assess whether their products and business processes meet the requirements of the PSTI Regulations,” concludes Patricia.

The guide is available to members through the members' area of the DHF website: https://bit.ly/4xfVxwU

Standing Out in a Crowded Market: The Value of Secured by Design

In a highly competitive marketplace, product differentiation is one of the greatest challenges facing manufacturers and suppliers of doors, windows, and hardware. With hundreds of companies competing for the attention of architects, developers, and specifiers, the question remains: how does a brand truly stand out?

For more than 700 forward-thinking companies, the answer lies in Secured by Design (SBD). As the official UK police security initiative, SBD offers the only way for products to achieve formal police recognition. It serves as a powerful market differentiator - a clear statement to customers that products are engineered to the highest recognised security standards.

What is Secured by Design?

A boom in housing construction during the 1980s had left a legacy of poorly designed estates where criminal activity could thrive. Recognising that the police service needed to move beyond reactive enforcement, the SBD initiative was created to embed crime prevention directly into the heart of building and landscape design. The driving force behind this success is a national network of police specialists: Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs).

DOCOs are highly trained police staff who provide specialist guidance to architects, developers, and local authority planners. Engaging at the earliest stages of a construction or refurbishment project, they apply proven design principles to minimise criminal opportunity - ranging from optimising natural surveillance to specifying robust physical security products.

The value of SBD membership

Through collaboration with DOCOs, developers can achieve SBD awards for their buildings. Because these standards are now integral to satisfying the official security requirements of Building Regulations across the UK, SBD-accredited products are consistently in high demand.

SBD membership delivers several strategic advantages:
  • Official police recognition: SBD is the sole route to achieving UK police endorsement for products via its Police Preferred Specification accreditation scheme
  • Specification: SBD-accredited products are the go-to choice for Police DOCOs. They are specified in new builds and major refurbishments daily, creating a consistent demand for your products
  • Visibility: SBD members receive a dedicated profile on the SBD website, directly signposting buyers, architects, and large-scale developers to members products
  • Industry connections: Membership grants access to the annual ATLAS conference, providing a unique platform to showcase innovations directly to these police officers who advise on security solutions at a local level
SBD does not merely award a logo; it maintains a strict partnership model. Ongoing requirements for re-testing and factory inspections ensure that the integrity of the brand remains protected, sheltering members from competition against substandard products.

The PSTI Act: Turning Regulatory Compliance into Advantage

The security landscape is no longer limited to physical barriers. For door and window manufacturers incorporating smart technology - such as keyless digital locks, status sensors, or smart home automation integrations - the regulatory environment has shifted.

The Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act is fully in force and while some manufacturers may not view their products as traditional IoT devices, the legislation defines ‘connectable products’ broadly. In addition, responsibility under the act extends across the entire supply chain, from manufacturers to distributors and retailers.

Compliance is mandatory, and the enforcement body, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), holds the authority to issue substantial penalties for non-compliance. However, proactive businesses are viewing this legislative shift not as a regulatory hurdle, but as an opportunity to build digital trust.

The Secure Connected Device Accreditation

To assist companies in navigating this digital transition, SBD developed the Secure Connected Device accreditation in consultation with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

This rigorous program goes beyond the baseline requirements of the PSTI Act, assessing products against all 13 provisions of the ETSI EN 303 645 standard. Achieving this accreditation grants products the SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation badge, signalling to specifiers that their smart technology is resilient against modern cyber threats. Furthermore, an annual appraisal process ensures continued compliance as cyber threats and government frameworks evolve.

Lead the Market. Gain a Competitive Edge. Become Secured by Design

Secured by Design offers a path to demonstrating excellence in both physical and digital security. By aligning with the UK's official police initiative, you translate a commitment to quality into a market advantage, positioning your products as the trusted choice for specifiers and consumers alike.

Hörmann Truedor Roadshows Showcase Installer Growth Opportunities

Hörmann Truedor has successfully completed a series of roadshows across the UK, designed to demonstrate how entrance door installers can unlock new business growth through its composite door offering and comprehensive dealer support package.

Held as informal early morning events, the roadshows brought together installers over coffee and breakfast to explore opportunities to expand their product portfolios. The Hörmann Truedor team were on hand to outline how the range of UK-manufactured composite doors, backed by Hörmann’s engineering expertise, strong brand reputation and nationwide infrastructure, can provide a high-quality, consumer-focused addition to existing offerings.

A key highlight of the events was the introduction of Hörmann’s latest consumer marketing initiative, Hörmann Street. This targeted social media campaign, inspired by popular UK soap operas, features a fictional street and a cast of recurring characters navigating everyday drama, relationships and suspense. Each episode subtly integrates the features and benefits of Hörmann Truedor composite doors, aiming to drive traffic to the company’s website and generate genuine homeowner enquiries.

Attendees were given an exclusive preview of the campaign, which received an overwhelmingly positive response. Installers praised both the creativity and execution, recognising its potential to engage homeowners and support lead generation.

Hörmann confirmed that all enquiries generated through the campaign will be directed to approved dealers via its new online Installer Finder, offering installers a clear commercial advantage. To help maximise conversion rates, the company has also implemented a suite of practical sales tools and support, including an advanced online Door Designer, product training, marketing resources and ongoing technical assistance.

In addition to the long-term growth potential, installers attending the roadshows were offered a range of launch incentives, including a £1,500 door voucher package, a 750-point sign-up bonus for the Hörmann Rewards programme and free access to the Door Designer for the first year.

Overall, the roadshows provided installers with a concise and engaging introduction to partnering with Hörmann Truedor, highlighting how the company can help drive demand, attract new customers and increase profitability within the composite door sector.

Competence and Transparency: A New Era for Fire Door Safety

As the built environment navigates a period of significant reform, Karen Trigg of Allegion UK examines the two principles that are proving fundamental in reshaping fire safety standards.

The fire door safety model is changing. Improved building safety requirements and the demand for greater accountability have been the driving force behind new regulation and guidance. However, it is the growing relevance of competence and transparency that is redefining how responsibility is understood across the supply chain.

Competence and transparency are far from new concepts, but in the wake of regulatory updates, their interdependence is helping to form a framework through which higher standards can be achieved. More than ever before, the ability to specify, install and maintain effective fire safety systems - such as fire doors and their hardware - hinges on demonstrable expertise. Crucially, that expertise must now be reinforced by clear, accurate and accessible information.

Whether approaching a new development or retrofit project, displaying a sufficient level of capability and clarity is now a prerequisite for compliance. Not only must decision makers show confidence in the products specified and installed on fire doors, but also in the data that underpins those choices. Whilst legislation outlines what is expected of responsible parties, how are competence and transparency defined in theory? And in what way can professionals translate this into practice?

Concepts defined

In the context of fire doors, both safety and compliance are compromised when gaps emerge between regulatory expectations and execution. A certified fire door will typically compartmentalise a space for 30 to 60 minutes, preventing the spread of smoke and fire and providing occupants with a critical opportunity to escape. However, an ineffective fire door system can lose its integrity within minutes, with common failures often identified as the result of incorrect specification, poor installation and inadequate maintenance.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that fire doors should be installed by a ‘competent person’, yet the demand for competency extends beyond installation alone. Specifiers, maintenance professionals and responsible persons must all demonstrate capability past general awareness. In fact, individual competence is defined as possessing the appropriate skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours (also referenced as SKEB), as outlined in The Building Safety Act, BS 8670-1:2024.

The Building Safety Act also stresses the importance of transparency, whereby those involved in building design and the management of high risk buildings must refer to the ‘Golden Thread of Information’ as part of their duties. Following years of legislative reform, there is a higher expectation for clear product documentation, with greater transparency able to support more informed decision making. For this, the ‘Golden Thread’ acts a single source of truth, providing clear, accessible and accurate records of buildings and the systems used within them.

Further emphasis is being placed on product information through the Construction Products Reform Green Paper and the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI). These initiatives focus on how manufacturers communicate product information and aim to eliminate misleading claims by ensuring performance data is clear, verifiable and up to date. The emergence of Digital Product Passports (DPP) - expected to become a legal requirement for CE marking - will strengthen this approach further and, when implemented, will enable stakeholders to access product performance records and testing data in real time.

Converting theory into practice

These evolving standards send a clear message: both competence and transparency must be embed into every stage of the decision-making process. Professionals across the supply chain must demonstrate that fire door assemblies meet the required standards, and in doing so, it is critical to recognise that these two principles go hand in hand.

From specification and installation to inspection and maintenance, even the most capable individual is limited without access to accurate information. Equally, comprehensive product data holds little value if it is not understood or properly applied. In line with the SKEB framework, continuous learning and professional development are essential, with ongoing training helping to ensure that individuals maintain and enhance their capabilities as industry standards, products and regulations continue to evolve.

Manufacturers also play a pivotal role in advancing the relationship between competence and transparency. Many conscious manufacturers are investing in end-to-end product support, including detailed technical literature, installation guidance and training resources. These efforts are helping to build awareness and skills in key areas, whilst assuring capability and raising industry benchmarks. The implementation of digital tools is making information more accessible too, and is equipping professionals with the means to specify, install and maintain fire door safety products with confidence.

In practice, professionals are encouraged to review fire door hardware specification, installation and maintenance as specialised tasks. During installation, for example, installers must look to follow manufacturer guidelines and fitting instructions, which should be supplied with all third-party certified fire doors and hardware. Similarly, competent fire door assessors must ensure that the entire assembly is fit for purpose, reviewing certification, door integrity, glazing, gaps, seals, hinges and closing mechanisms in the process. When a fire door is not operating as intended, it is essential to seek out expert advice where required, ensuring maintenance is carried out both quickly and professionally.

With this in mind, reliable fire door systems should always be supplied with comprehensive product information, including performance records, third-party certification, technical product data sheets and installation guidelines. Transparent, accurate construction product information verifies whether a system complies with necessary standards, and by combining this with the development of SKEB, professionals are making the right steps toward effectively managing fire door safety across the built environment.

The relationship between competence and transparency is about more than compliance, however. By following both principles, professionals will be equipped with the right knowledge and are supported by reliable information, fostering a much-needed culture of trust. Ultimately, this integrated approach may contain the key to raising fire door safety standards and delivering a safer built environment for all.

Entrance Systems Alliance launches Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction)

Entrance Systems Alliance (ESA) formed by two well-known and established trade organisations, the Automatic Doors Suppliers Association (ADSA) and the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), has announced the launch of a new Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction). It is designed to support the development of skilled supervisors across the construction sector.

The qualification is a workplace-based programme that enables learners to demonstrate their competence in a real construction environment. Built around National Occupational Standards, it assesses practical ability through evidence gathered on site, rather than through classroom-based examinations.

Learners complete a structured portfolio of evidence, supported and assessed by a qualified assessor, with the qualification graded on a pass or fail basis. Candidates must be employed in a relevant role, ensuring that assessment reflects genuine workplace responsibilities. The course is aimed at individuals currently working in construction who are supervising teams or preparing to move into supervisory positions. It is also suitable for those with existing industry experience, or those who have already achieved a Level 2 qualification or equivalent occupational competence.

To achieve the diploma, learners must successfully complete the six mandatory units and two optional units from a selection of four, covering the core responsibilities expected of a construction supervisor. These include monitoring progress against work schedules, maintaining health, safety and environmental standards, co-ordinating work operations, confirming work activities and resources, and developing effective working relationships on site.

Optional units enable learners to tailor the qualification to their role, with areas such as team performance, quality standards, dimensional control, and the use of plant and equipment.

The qualification has been developed to reflect the realities of modern construction sites, ensuring that learners gain relevant, practical skills that can be applied immediately in their roles. It also provides a clear pathway for progression into more senior supervisory or management positions.

“Our Work with the CITB super sector groups has highlighted the need for a route to professional competence; this level 3 qualification offers an opportunity for supervisors in the door, gate and shutter systems industry to demonstrate their competence and gives them a clearly defined pathway towards future management positions”, says Ken Price, Managing Director at ADSA. “We are delighted to be working with NOCN to be offering this qualification."

From an employer perspective, the qualification offers a structured way to support workforce development and confirm the capability of supervisory staff. By aligning with recognised standards, it provides assurance that individuals are operating at the expected level within their role.

“Developing competent, confident supervisors is critical to the future of our industry,” explains DHF’s Deputy CEO, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “This qualification provides a practical, accessible route for individuals to demonstrate their ability in a real working environment, while giving employers confidence in the skills and standards of their teams. It reflects the realities of the construction sector and supports progression at a time when strong leadership on site has never been more important. Through this launch, ESA continues its commitment to raising standards across the industry by supporting skills development, improving competence, and strengthening the pipeline of future construction leaders.”

ADSA leads industry-wide initiative to ensure safe automation of fire-rated doors

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has launched a collaborative industry initiative to address a growing technical challenge: how to safely automate existing fire-rated doors without compromising their fire performance.

Automation is increasingly used across healthcare, education, transport and commercial buildings to improve accessibility, manage footfall and support safer movement. However, retrofitting automation to manual fire doors is not always a simple upgrade. Modifications such as installing operators, routing cables or replacing closing devices can alter the door’s construction and potentially affect its integrity as a fire-resisting system.

In response, ADSA has brought together a cross-industry steering group including leading manufacturers: record UK, dormakaba and GEZE UK, alongside the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers, the British Woodworking Federation and a leading fire test house.

Controlled testing will be carried out to replicate common retrofit scenarios - initially focusing on timber fire doors. The aim is to understand how typical modifications, such as drilling for cabling or changing hardware, influence fire performance and to build a robust evidence base for the industry.

Darren Hyde, Technical and Training Manager at ADSA, said: “Many of the questions we receive now relate to automating existing fire doors. When you retrofit automation, you’re potentially changing the construction of the door. What we want to do as an industry is understand exactly how those modifications affect fire performance.”

While new-build projects benefit from tested, fully specified door systems, retrofit environments are far less predictable.

“In new-build, manufacturers can provide clear test evidence for complete systems,” Darren added. “In retrofit situations, that level of certainty doesn’t always exist. We want to close that gap in understanding.”

Findings from the programme will inform new guidance for engineers, specifiers and building owners, expected later this year. Rather than prescribing a single solution, the guidance will help professionals assess the impact of common modifications and apply practical measures - such as appropriate cable routing, fire-stopping and installation methods - to maintain door integrity.

The initiative also reinforces the need to consider accessibility and fire safety together. While automation delivers clear benefits, it must be implemented with a full understanding of its impact. At the same time, ADSA recognises that full door replacement is not always necessary; with the right technical approach, many existing fire doors can be adapted safely and responsibly.

By bringing together industry expertise, testing and practical guidance, ADSA and its partners aim to close the knowledge gap around retrofit automation and support safer, more informed decision-making across the built environment.
