Assa Abloy’s Timber Doorsets Have Proven Longevity

Tackling the needs of buildings that have a high frequency of use, ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions’ timber doorsets not only address safety and access, but whole life costing too.

ASSA ABLOY timber doorsets have been proven to enhance a range of busy commercial and public sector buildings across the country, by reducing maintenance and replacement expenditure. One example of this can be seen in Royal Blackburn Hospital in Lancashire, where the doorsets have proven to be robust, delivering ‘Best Value’ over the project’s lifetime.

The hospital opened in 2006 and was supplied with over 2,200 ASSA ABLOY doorsets, since then the site has been inundated with visitors, including around 70,000 A&E attendances per year. The ASSA ABLOY doorsets were installed as part of the initial CapEx budget, but their ability to withstand the wear and tear of high-density through-traffic and heavy equipment, is providing value over time.

Allan Thomson, Commercial Manager for ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, said:
“Specifiers for projects such as Royal Blackburn Hospital can no longer afford to make large project investments without justifying the long-term cost implications, particularly due to the widespread cuts across the NHS. With the implementation of BIM and Whole Life Cost modelling it has become imperative to understand better that low-value product quality selection ultimately has a negative impact on the building’s running costs.

“It is important not to risk investing in a doorset that offers an attractive initial saving, if the quality of the product isn’t fit for purpose and durable enough for its continual application. We independently test our timber doorsets to ensure they match the industry’s key performance standards, providing specifiers with an indication of the products durability and life cycle, so they can make the best decision with regards to TotEx cost.

“With regard to Whole Life Costing the general allowance for building managers to have a repair/redecoration programme is every seven years, so our doorsets are now saving this hospital money thanks to their long-lasting performance.

“We have a history of offering complete doorset packages to architects and contractors, including fully finished doors and frames, ironmongery and seals, which are all prepared and ready to use. We are one proven source of supply and have become a ‘one stop shop’ for our customers to depend on.”

ASSA locks were also supplied as part of the integrated doorsets in the hospital, the heavy duty locks have ensured that minimal maintenance will be required over the planned 30-year lifespan of this PFI project.

A complete master key system was installed, covering both internal and external doors and giving access tailored to the individual users, the system allows a flexible response to suit the Trust’s developing requirements. ASSA’s 4800 cylinders, door automation systems, electromechanical floorsprings and door magnets completed the project specification.

ASSA ABLOY is the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of door opening solutions and the timber doorsets match the relevant industry standards including durability, acoustic, fire, whole life costing and sustainability. ASSA ABLOY can provide doors that are fire rated to 120 minutes, achieve an acoustics rating of up to 43 decibels and performance ratings up to ‘Severe duty’, as well as assisting in meeting the requirements under the Equality Act.

World’s oldest functioning Lancia motorcar to be auctioned for charity

A 1912 Lancia 20/30 HP Tipo 58 “Epsilon” Corsa went under the hammer at Coys auction at the famous Techno Classica event in Essen, Germany, yesterday.

This car is understood to be the world’s oldest functioning Lancia motorcar and the marque’s only surviving racing car of that period.

It was once owned by Oscar Capellano, one of the most esteemed marque authors and historians, who located it in an un-restored and original state in storage at the Lancia factory museum. Capellano determined that it was one of the 1913 TargaFlorio team cars, due to its unmistakeable VersioneCorsa competition components, and managed to buy it in the late 1970s. He then set out to restore it using all original components where there were none.

Oscar passed away last year and in his honour his daughter decided to sell this car at auction to fund “Progetto Gnekko”. This is a project to build up a nature park in Chivasso in the outskirts of Turin, Italy, where handicapped kids and children who had a bad upbringing will be able to interact with animals and learn to appreciate nature.

Chris Routledge, Managing Partner at Coys, said:
“This is unique opportunity for the courageous veteran car adventurer not only to own a pre-World War I vehicle from the pioneering days of competition motoring but to help one of the noblest causes.”

He added: “This Lancia was built as a pure race car with no passenger protection, a huge fuel tank and racing gearbox. Today it is still capable of running at modern motorway speeds. We estimate it will sell between €300,000 and €380,000.”
The model was initially available in various versions. It had a mono block engine with a fixed head and unilateral valves pushing out a respectable 60 HP out of the 4.1 litre displacement. It could be ordered in four different chassis lengths to accommodate bodies for trucks, limousines, coupés, Landaulets, torpedos or spiders.

Only 312 chassis were produced and only two of these are known today, including this car and a limousine that is in the SchlumpfMuseum.

Also featuring in the sale is a highly original 1948 Nardi-BMW Gilco that remains absolutely untouched. According to the famous authority on these cars, Johnde Boer, this is an early Nardi, which used the BMW engine in the front and the ultimate chassis technology at the time, the Gilco chassis. It is estimated at €130,000 - €150,000.

Another important car coming up for sale at this auction is a 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport Zagato ex-Scuderia Ferrari with extensive Mille Miglia history. This car competed several times in the famous race with some outstanding results, including finishing second in class and 16th overall in 1933 and first in class and 10th overall in 1937.

For more information and to find the prices achieved on these and other lots, visit: www.coys.co.uk

Record Results Show a Successful Year for IronmongeryDirect

IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s biggest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, enjoyed a successful 2013 with record year-end results, showing significant increases in both turnover and profit.

The company saw a ninth consecutive year of growth, with a rise in both new customers and sales, and a turnover of £22.1 million - a 22.2 per cent jump when compared to 2012.

Highlights:

• Turnover £22.1 million (up 22.2 per cent on 2012)
• 9th year of consecutive growth
• Profit rises at faster rate than turnover
• Acquired by Manutan Group in July
• 53,000 new customers
• Online sales grow by 42 per cent (from £7.2m to £10.2m)
• Over 11,000 App downloads since its launch in April
• Mobile sales grow by 115 per cent
• Order cut-off extended 8pm for next day delivery
• Free returns guarantee introduced

IronmongeryDirect has supplied architectural ironmongery to builders, joiners and shop fitters for 45 years, having been founded as a traditional ironmonger’s shop. It now stocks more than 14,500 products and last year extended its cut-off time for next day delivery to 8pm and introduced a free returns guarantee, making it even more convenient for tradesmen to order.

The business attracted over 53,000 new customers in 2013 and will continue to focus on enhancing the service, to maintain its high customer retention rate and welcome even more over the coming 12 months.

As tradesmen increasingly embrace digital technologies and mobile devices, the firm’s omnichannel retail strategy contributed to a further boost. IronmongeryDirect’s app, which launched in April, had over 11,000 downloads, plus there was an increased overall use of the company’s mobile site to place orders following the introduction of this service in 2012. The free app was launched to mark the 10th anniversary of IronmongeryDirect’s website and complements the mobile and desktop sites, while customers can still browse and order products from the firm’s 900 page catalogue.

Last year also saw the company get acquired by Manutan Group, a leading European mail order supplier to business and local authorities. With this, IronmongeryDirect continues to strengthen its position in the UK market and Manutan will further support the on-going, strong growth of IronmongeryDirect.

IronmongeryDirect’s managing director, Wayne Lysaght-Mason, said:
“These results reflect a strong year for IronmongeryDirect and reinforce our position as the UK’s largest specialist distributor of ironmongery for the trade.

“Our performance has been driven by focusing on what our customers want and we have reached out to new and existing customers via a more flexible ordering process. In particular, we have extended our already market-leading cut-off time for next day delivery, introduced a free returns guarantee, as well as building upon the success of our mobile site by introducing our new app to enhance our offering. All of this has taken place against the background of a highly successful and mutually beneficial relationship with Manutan Group.”

Doors are opening for Allegion’s new Briton 2300/2400 range

Leading global provider of security and safety solutions, Allegion (formerly Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies), has launched a new range of door closers, specifically designed to offer market-leading cam-action technology at a competitive price point.

The Briton 2300 Series Surface Mounted Closers and 2400 Series Concealed Closers comprise a host of innovative solutions to meet the needs of the healthcare, education and commercial sectors; delivering high quality, precision manufactured units for exceptional ease of use and reliability.

The Briton 2300 series incorporates the same high efficiency cam-technology as the popular Briton 2700 series, allowing users to enjoy the same ease of use and is available with either a slide in trimplate or with a curved ‘softline’ all-over cover. The 2300 model comes with adjustable power sizes 2-4.

For environments requiring concealed cam-technology door closers, the Briton 2400 series is suitable for doors 44mm thick. Delivering the same product quality as the new door mounted options, this model offers an aesthetically pleasing solution with additional protection from vandalism.

Demet Tunc, Vice President of Product Management for Allegion comments:
“We are delighted to bring this new range of cam-action door closers to market, after extensive sector research, product development and rigorous testing procedures.

“As a top manufacturer of traditional door closers, Briton has a heritage reaching back decades, putting us in good stead to create a high quality collection of cam-technology products suited to any commercial or public sector environments such as schools or hospitals.

“Specification of these products is increasing, and there was a gap in the market for a product range that could meet the strictest guidelines for quality and functionality, at an affordable price. We have risen to the challenge and delivered a collection of closers that boast high quality materials, durable components and careful design.”

The 2700 series is an existing part of the Briton cam-technology portfolio. The heavy-duty, slide-action channel door closer, in an overhead surface fixed unit is available in three models; standard, mechanical hold-open and electromagnetic hold-open.

As with all Briton cam-closers, the 2700 series conforms to the requirements of EN1154 and comes with adjustable power sizes 2 through to 5. The range incorporates an optional mechanical hold-open device and an electromagnetic hold-open model.

To ensure optimum efficiency the Briton 2700 series allows installers to see the current power setting and adjust the spring power to suit door conditions. The naturally high inherent graphite content of the closer’s cast iron body lubricates inner components with every use, aiding durability and longevity.

All Allegion products are offered with industry needs in mind and are backed up by the company’s full design and project capabilities, providing end to end solutions for all security needs.

The Briton 2300 and 2400 series are now available nationwide through Allegion’s extensive network of distributors. For further information visit www.allegion.co.uk

Spring security advice from the Master Locksmiths Association

Dr Steffan George, development director of The Master Locksmiths Association – the leading trade association for the locksmithing profession – provides advice for customers on how to review their home security for the longer and brighter days ahead.

Firstly, check your house from the outside in. It’s advisable to tidy away and securely store items from the garden such as ladders, bins, gardening tools or other objects that could be used by intruders to gain entry to your property. If you have external storage such as sheds, outbuildings and garages, make sure they are secured with high quality padlocks, locks and hasp and staples. Look for 3rd party approval such as the Sold Secure quality on security products.

Secondly, make sure the areas surrounding your property are well maintained. Consider trimming back any trees and obstructing bushes which could be used as ‘cover’ for burglars. Check the condition of your fences and gates, which can be prone to neglect, as any weak points can make it easier for would-be thieves to gain entry to your property.

We are all guilty of leaving keys lying around in draws or on hooks. To minimise the number of keys you have and limit the chance of them going missing, it is worth having locks keyed alike, so the same key opens multiple doors and locks. This can also be applied to padlocks used on sheds and outbuildings.

Ensure that all valuables such as laptops, jewellery and keepsakes are stored away out of sight, as leaving these items on show tempts potential burglars to break in.

If you haven’t already, make sure you have an alarm professionally installed as this can be a powerful deterrent to would-be thieves. Make sure that you install a system which has a box that is visible on the outside of the property. It is also worth changing your alarm code if you haven’t done so recently.

Consider fitting door chains, spy holes, top / bottom bolts and even CCTV as these can all boost security and as well as preventing break-ins they can increase your sense of security.

Sensor lights or dusk-to-dawn lighting are additional deterrents and help you gain access to your home late at night. Opportunist thieves can often approach houses that look like nobody is at home, by installing a number of light timers around the house it appears that the house is occupied.

Check that all your ground floor windows and any accessible windows above ground floor have window locks. It is important to check the quality and integrity of the locks on doors and windows as well as the structural condition of the doors and windows themselves. Locks are prone to rust while rotten and cracked frames can make doors and windows easier to break through. If you have any doubts a local qualified locksmith - such as a Master Locksmith Association member - will be able to advise on which locks will be the most suitable, and ensure that they’ll meet insurance requirements.

It’s obvious advice, but do remember to lock all doors and windows before you leave, and set your alarm – a large number of burglaries take place because doors and windows have been left unlocked. Taking time to do this properly as you leave will significantly increase home security, as well as giving you peace of mind.

A third party accredited, licensed locksmith, such as an MLA member, will be able to assist in reviewing a property’s security and install effective security measures, helping to save money in the long term.

The World’s Rarest Aston Martin To Be Offered At Bonhams Goodwood Festival Of Speed Sale

Landmark 1939-1940 prototype Aston Martin Atom offered for sale
by auction for the first time ever

The unique, 75-year-old Aston Martin Atom is to be a star Lot in Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on June 27, 2014.

This avant-garde, lightweight and highly original aerodynamic Coupe concept car has been both renowned and revered for decades by Aston Martin collectors and the wider world of confirmed classic car enthusiasts. But while it is less well-known to the public at large, this 1939-1940 one-off prototype from the legendary British marque is in fact a hugely significant and influential landmark within motoring history.

The frontier-technology Aston Martin Atom – surviving as one of the world’s earliest fully running concept cars - featured:

• A fully-patented, lightweight yet rigid integral body and tubular spaceframe chassis structure
• Lightweight aluminium body panelling, permitting speedy design changes
• Patented parallel-linkage coil-sprung independent front suspension
• The first UK use of the later almost universal Salisbury back axle
• Cotal electromagnetic semi-automatic gearbox – forerunner of modern ‘paddle’
• Aerodynamic ‘fastback’ style Coupe coachwork
• Aeronautical-style ‘hammock’ seats
• In 1945 the first use of Aston Martin’s newly patented 2-litre (DB1) engine

The Atom was finished and registered only six weeks after the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. Aston Martin’s contemporary owner, enthusiast businessman Gordon Sutherland, had the car designed and built by a dedicated design team under engineer Claude Hill. At that fraught time when park railings, pots and pans were being melted-down to aid the War effort, the Atom was amongst fewer than 750 private cars to be UK registered in the entire year.

While the mighty American General Motors Corporation’s 1938 Buick Y-Job is widely accepted as having been the first concept car of all, at the other end of the size spectrum the then-tiny Aston Martin marque had the Atom in public road use during 1940.

Gordon Sutherland himself explained that “The whole point of the Atom was to make the smallest, lightest, enclosed saloon possible”. It was intended to combine the performance, roadholding and handling of the finest contemporary sports car with quietness and the comfort of an aerodynamically efficient saloon body, easily modified and economically produced.

The ‘atom’ being the smallest, most powerful thing conceivable – the essence of everything – it was chosen as the perfect name for this technically advanced, futuristic Grand Touring car.

The Aston Martin Atom’s wartime press reception was ecstatic.
‘The Autocar’ described it as: “The future in the present…a complete breakaway from existing Aston Martins and the general run of British cars…The saloon body breaks with British car convention…see it as the comfortable, convenient sports car of the future...”

‘Motor Sport’ magazine enthused:
“This is a machine which convinces you it is all the way a winner…”, while ‘The Motor’ was emphatic that “…in this car we can see the new order of motoring…”.

This unique frontier-breaking 90-100mph 2-plus-2 Coupe was used by Mr and Mrs Gordon Sutherland both for personal and private transport, their children often travelling in its cosy rear seats.

Lack of publicly available fuel during wartime saw the Atom stored at his factory for up to three months at a time, but Gordon Sutherland knew its technology-proving value for a postwar resumption of Aston Martin production. He drove it personally for more than 100,000 test miles and immediately postwar the experience of driving the Atom persuaded industrialist David Brown to buy the company that had created it.

Amongst the developments Gordon Sutherland listed for the time when materials might again become available were many incorporated postwar into the first of the David Brown-owned Aston Martin company’s DB-series Grand Touring cars, the now-renowned Aston Martin DB1, DB2, DB2/4 and 3.

Today the Atom, taxed and tested, has completed some 250,000 miles. Its discerning ownership - including two distinguished race/rally drivers - has changed only once in the last 49 years, and this unsung little jewel has long been painstakingly conserved and maintained by one enthusiast owner. He has now entrusted it to Bonhams for the Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on June 27.

Bonhams holds the World record for the highest price achieved for any Aston Martin sold at auction and Group Motoring Director James Knight describes the Atom as: “Plainly one of Aston Martin’s absolute landmark designs, and certainly one of the most exciting one-off British cars we have ever been asked to offer. It is unique, it is super sophisticated, and when one considers it within the context of 1939-40 it represents a monumental achievement. That the Atom has survived in almost constant use, and is today so beautifully conserved in highly original order, is a great tribute to the enthusiasm and taste of the Aston Martin connoisseurs who have fostered it for so many years.

“Placing a value on such an important and unique motor car is nigh on impossible but it has all the right credentials: a well respected and international marque; concours condition; originality, provenance, useability, rarity and of course its historical significance. Our initial thoughts are that it will realize many hundreds of thousands and certainly has the potential to achieve more. Time will tell though, and by offering Atom publicly at auction, we will let the market determine the value.”

Major Milestones are being Celebrated by Europe's First Fire Door Safety and Qualifications Scheme

Two years since it launched, the UK's Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) now has more than 400 candidates registered on its online training programme and more than 150 fire door experts who have passed the FDIS Diploma and are using the designation DipFD. People are signing up to the Diploma programme at an increasing rate – including 50 in the past quarter alone.

There are now 15 certificated inspectors who are working with property owners and facilities managers to carry out full fire door audits and to provide appropriate recommendations for repair, maintenance and improvements. A campaign is being launched this year to get more of these inspectors approved through the FDIS certification process in order to meet the huge client demand.

FDIS has also received strong industry and public support for Theodore Firedoor, a fire door safety campaign using Facebook, YouTube and other social media to bring attention to the widespread problems of ill-fitting, damaged and poorly maintained fire doors in public buildings.

One of the drivers of the success of the scheme has been the numerous fines handed out to property owners for breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, also known as the RRO, because of incorrectly specified, installed or poorly maintained fire doors. The RRO identifies the property owner or representative as the ‘Responsible Person’ accountable for implementing a fire safety plan for the property, including the installation and maintenance of fire doors.

FDIS general manager Neil Ashdown says:
“The last two years have seen the scheme go from strength to strength as more building owners and managers become aware of their fire door responsibilities and look for expert advice to help them stay on the right side of their professional, legal and moral duties.”

FDIS Certificated Inspectors can be found at: http://fdis.co.uk/inspector

Pictures of dodgy fire doors can be sent in to Theodore Firedoor’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/theodorefiredoor or via his Twitter account @Theodore_Firedoor. His email address theodore.firedoor@gmail.com.
