DHF announces the launch of its virtual learning programme

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced that from September 2024, it will be launching a new virtual learning facility; courses will be delivered via an online classroom, connecting DHF trainers and delegates in real-time to complete training wherever they might be.

At the very heart of DHF’s operations is its extensive training programmes, created to keep the industry informed on the importance of putting safe and compliant products on the market.

“Over the past 10 years, DHF has trained more than 5,000 delegates on DHF courses either face-to-face or via the Distance Learning Programme,” explains DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “Virtual learning will combine elements of both and provide delegates with the opportunity to complete a DHF training course remotely at a location of choice but still receive live interaction from a DHF trainer and other delegates attending the course. Our trainers are renowned experts in the industry (a reputation we are extremely proud of) and provide a wealth of experience and knowledge.”

Examinations will be completed remotely throughout the course via the Online Training Academy, enabling delegates to receive instant results. Once the course has been completed, successful delegates will be able to download their certificates from the Online Training Academy.

“Virtual learning eliminates the need to travel and provides accessibility to DHF training courses wherever delegates might be located,” says Patricia. “These enable savings on travel costs, time away from site, and contribute to the reduction of carbon footprint.”

Virtual learning is currently only available for the Level 2 Awards in Safety for Automated Gates & Traffic Barriers and Industrial & Garage Doors, and as with face-to-face training this course will run from 9am - 5pm with given breaks throughout the day. ABBE Accreditation can still be added onto virtual learning courses starting from £40+ VAT.

The first virtual Level 2 Award for Industrial & Garage Doors is Thursday 19th September: https://bit.ly/3SqjLBN

The first virtual Level 2 Award for Automated Gates & Traffic Barriers is Monday 30th September: https://bit.ly/4di4I5b

National Home Security Month from Yale is back to boost security sales this autumn

National Home Security Month (NHSM) from Yale is back from 1st October, with the campaign in its twelfth year of encouraging UK homeowners to upgrade their home security.

When the clocks go back, crime goes up by as much as 34%i  as opportunist burglars make use of the darker nights.

NHSM runs throughout October, raising awareness of the need to prioritise home security as we head into the colder months.

The first line of defence for homeowners is the front door. One of the easiest and most effective ways to secure it is to invest in a maximum-security cylinder that will prevent lock-snapping – one of the most common techniques used by criminals.

Solutions with the TS007 BSI Kitemark and three-star protection, such as the Yale Platinum 3-Star Cylinder, do exactly this.

Another common entry point is through the window, meaning window security should also be a high priority.

Window handles such as Yale’s TS007 2-star security handle provide the highest level of security available, and when combined with a 1-Star Cylinder, offer the ultimate protection against a range of known attack methods.

Allowing users to monitor their homes remotely, high-quality smart security solutions also offer powerful protection against the threat of opportunistic burglars.

Yale SensCheck™ integrated smart window and door lock sensors, for example, provide homeowners with the option to check the status of their doors and windows on their smart devices and phones, wherever they are.

Yale has also recently announced the launch of its new Smart Security Ecosystem, designed to provide trade professionals with a range of devices to suit all customer needs, providing seamless integration and heightened security for homeowners.

The Smart Security Ecosystem includes new Smart Security Cameras, one camera for indoor security protection and one for outdoor use, and for additional front door protection, the inclusion of the new Smart Video Doorbell.

Karl Woolley, Head of Product Management, Yale Retail UK, comments:

“Raising awareness of home security vulnerabilities at this time of year continues to be hugely important, and the reason why we created the National Home Security Month campaign in 2013.

“After 12 years, NHSM is back once again to make homeowners aware of the current threats, providing advice, support and product recommendations to encourage a necessary home security upgrade.

“This provides a fantastic opportunity for merchants and trade professionals to benefit from increased demand and therefore sales during this profitable autumn, winter period.”

For more information and handy tips and advice from this year’s National Home Security Month from Yale, visit www.homesecuritymonth.com or search #NHSM2024 on Facebook, X, and Instagram.

For more information on the range of products available from Yale, get in touch via trade@yale.co.uk or reach out to your Yale representative.

HorizAL Aluminium Gates Now Guaranteed for 25 Years

Alucorb, the Stockport-based firm with sole UK distribution rights for premium French gate manufacturer HorizAL, recently announced that buyers will now benefit from an astonishing 25-year guarantee!

Darren Weatherill, Operations Director at Alucorb explains:

“We’ve always offered a 10-year guarantee but it’s now more than doubled.

“That’s testament to the amazing quality of the product.

“All these gates are coated with marine-grade Qualicoat thermal lacquering for longevity and reliability.

“They are then rigorously tested at HorizAL's production facility in France before being CE / UKCA marked and shipped to the UK.”

Darren continues:

“We're dedicated to helping our installers avoid the pitfalls of inferior quality aluminium gates,”

“HorizAL gates provide a combination of durability, performance and aesthetics that sets them apart from lower-quality alternatives.

“Sadly, the popularity of aluminium gates means there are now many inferior models on the market.

“Whereas every HorizAL gate is properly engineered, other models are often ‘tek-screwed & glued or welded’, which can cause problems down the line.

“However, post-sales support is often lacking - so if there’s a problem, installers are being left on their own.

“By contrast, we offer full post-sales support, so the installer is never left with any unanswered questions or unsolved problems.”

Alucorb support includes access to an exclusive 3D app that lets installers demonstrate how a gate will look on the client’s driveway before installation.

This helps the client to decide on the correct style and colour, whilst giving a personal touch to every quotation.

It’s an excellent sales tool that installers can use to help the customer decide whilst conducting their site survey.

To further enhance its service offering, Alucorb has implemented new internal improvements, including advanced enquiry software and a CRM system.

The company's commitment to growth is evident in its ever-expanding network of installers.

Alucorb regularly conducts meetings and training sessions at its headquarters, ensuring that installers are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed with HorizAL products.

To support this expansion, Alucorb has welcomed Annie Ramsden as Operations Coordinator, who will manage the ever-increasing demand and help maintain the high level of service that Alucorb is known for.

Darren concludes:

“Our message is a simple one – there is no better aluminium gate on the market.

“And we’ve put our money where our mouth is with this new guarantee.”

Installers interested in joining the HorizAL network are encouraged to contact Alucorb for a full information pack and to arrange a meeting.

Darren himself is on hand to visit interested parties at their premises and explain the benefits of installing these best-in-class gates and working with Alucorb.

For more information, installers can also visit the ‘Installer Portal’ on the HorizAL website, which provides access to a wealth of resources and support materials.

To discover more about the HorizAL product range or Approved Installer programme, call Alucorb on 0161 406 5910 today, or visit www.horizal.co.uk

Oldest known surviving Ford Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) car heads to auction

A 1970 Ford Escort Mexico, believed to be the oldest known surviving Ford Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) car, is up for auction with H&H Classics.

The highly significant model, which is just one of a handful of ‘launch’ Mexico’s built in October 1970 the month before official production began, is expected to fetch between £60,000-£70,000 when it goes under the hammer at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, on Wednesday 9th October.

AVO produced Ford’s high performance road production cars and were hugely popular at the time and continue to attract intense interest today.

The model for auction has an ‘LVX’ Ford press registration plate and between 2006 and 2017 it was comprehensively restored to exacting original specification with over £60,000 reputedly spent.

It is also offered with a large history file including a very rare Escort Mexico sales brochure, a copy of ‘Classic Ford’ magazine featuring the car, plus a copy of the original buff logbook and DVLA ownership history.

During its time with Ford, the car was lent to Hendon police college to test against trainee pursuit drivers, and subsequently bought by a police officer from the driving school.

Paul Cheetham, motor car specialist at H&H Classics, said:

“It’s a privilege to offer this 1970 Ford Escort Mexico AVO car for auction.

“It is an unmissable opportunity for any fast Ford fanatic as opportunities to acquire AVO cars with such provenance are truly unrepeatable.”

The comprehensive restoration to original factory specification included keeping as many original parts as possible, with any parts that needed replacing being carried out with genuine parts.

Paul added:

“This Mexico is one of the first handful of Escort Mexico’s produced, believed to be one of four, before official production began.

“It is also the joint second Mexico registered, being registered new to Ford Motor Company on December 4th 1970.

“We expect there to be strong interest in this very special model at our auction in October.”

Those wishing to bid on the 1970 Ford Escort Mexico AVO car or any of the other lots can do so on the day in person, via online or telephone bidding, or by leaving a commission bid.

For further details or to register to bid, visit www.handh.co.uk.

Martyn’s Law Could Drive Demand for Emergency and Panic Hardware

Martyn’s Law – the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill - is set to drive public safety requirements across the UK.

This proposed legislation, named after Martyn Hett, a victim of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, will mandate stricter security measures in publicly accessible spaces to protect against the threat of terrorism.

As venues and public spaces prepare for these changes, the need for reliable panic hardware is set to rise dramatically.

From shopping centres to entertainment venues and transport hubs, the bill is expected to categorise these venues based on their capacity, with different security requirements depending on the size and type of venue. All must implement comprehensive security measures, including efficient evacuation and lockdown procedures.

The reliability of panic hardware, particularly devices that can integrate with wider building management and security, will become key to facilitating safe and swift lockdown or evacuation procedures.

Strand Hardware’s Antipanic range could help venues comply with these new requirements. Its solutions meet the rigorous demands of public spaces, ensuring both safety and durability.

These include:
  • PH (modular push bar/push pad products)
  • PHT (touch bars)
  • PHTM (motorised touch bars)
The type of device chosen for installation must reflect occupancy levels and the nature of the building. Other considerations may include the creation of clear opening requirements, the proposed door use, whether it is fire-resisting and the operating environment.

For day-to-day use, doors can be opened from the outside with an outside access device. These can be locked or opened from the outside, while still being able to be freely released from inside – maintaining security without compromising the basic panic function.

Motorised panic devices are often used on escape doors, which require external access control to restrict who enters a building.

Said Craig Fox, Strand Hardware Sales Director:
“They can enhance security and enable efficient building management. They can be linked to a variety of access control systems such as swipe card, digital keypad, or proximity readers to allow controlled access from outside.”
It is vital that any panic exit device can operate safely and is durable. All Strand Hardware panic and emergency exit devices have achieved Grade 7 durability standards and are UKCA-marked.

Having been highlighted in the King’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament, Martyn’s Law is set to swiftly become a legal reality. Architects, building designers and facilities managers will need to prioritise the installation of compliant emergency and panic hardware, whether for retrofitting existing buildings or specifying systems in new constructions and planning should begin now.

Incorporating advanced emergency and panic hardware will not only help venues comply but also enhance safety for building occupants.

DHF provides Guidance on ‘Powered Gate Hinge Safety’

To assist its members and the wider industry, the Tamworth-based trade association, the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), has provided advice on powered gate hinge safety, in particular, about gate hinge failure, and has created a members-only publication on this subject entitled, ‘Powered Gate Hinge Safety’.

As Nick Perkins, Senior Training & Compliance Officer at DHF, explains, when gate hinges suffer a failure, heavy gates can fall over, which can prove fatal to those in the vicinity.

One particular example was in 2013 when a heavy steel gate fell and killed 67-year-old Myra Goldman when its bottom hinge failed. The coroner investigating her death issued a regulation 28 report to HSE and BSI, ‘to prevent future death’, and demanding that standards be improved. In his discoveries, the coroner had noted that a common practice used to prevent gates from being lifted off their hinges had led to critical vulnerability and then to failure.
“At the time of the incident, it was common to fit gates with two hinges, the lower one with the hinge pin facing up, and the top one with the hinge pin facing down. In this design, the lower hinge bears the vast majority of the weight, wear and stress caused in normal use; subsequently, it is the most likely hinge to suffer damage or a structural failure,” explains Nick. “If and when it fails, there is nothing remaining to support the gate resulting in it falling.”
In 2016, the British standard for gates and fences, BS 1722, was revised to prevent this practice leading to further fatalities.
“The case of Myra Goldman had a knock-on effect for powered gates,” continues Nick.
“Many powered gates originate from manual gates provided by fencing contractors that are later automated by others, with the effect that several have unsuitable and potentially unsafe hinge arrangements.
“In fact, the standard for powered gates, EN 12453, has since its first publication in 2000, required the structure of the system to conform to EN 12604, which has always required that failure of any one suspension element (e.g. a hinge) should not allow a gate to fall. EN 12604 was later revised in 2017 to allow a degree of flexibility of design with the effect that it also provided a safe and compliant means to upgrade existing sub-standard systems.”
The standard currently allows a limited amount of falling over from the fully upright position, and therefore, there are now at least three means of providing a safe and compliant hinge design; firstly, two hinges and a safety lanyard (limited fall), three hinges (no movement or fall), and two reinforced hinges, any one of which will keep the gate from falling (providing some movement, but no fall).

A splash of colour from SWR and Hörmann

Hemel Hempstead based SWR has recently completed a stunning installation of two automated Hörmann LPU 42 sectional garage doors.

Supplied in a Silkgrain finish, the doors were custom coloured in RAL 4008 Signal violet, a vibrant shade from the RAL Classic collection.

The striking violet colour was specifically chosen by the homeowners to complement and contrast with their light pink character cottage. The finished doors create a strong, eye-catching first impression and add a real ‘Wow’ factor to the beautiful property.

Commenting on the installation, Jason Lee from SWR:
“I think it is fair to say that in over 30 years in business, this is the most colourful installation we have ever carried out.
With such a wide colour palette available it was really great to work with a customer who was happy to be brave and try something a little bit different. The finished job is visually amazing, and the homeowner is thrilled with the outcome.”

RollMatic T – Another Blockbuster from Hörmann

The marketing team at Hörmann UK have been out on location producing yet another blockbusting video to support their RollMatic T roller garage door.

Determined to show the end consumer that not all roller garage doors are the same, the team have taken a daring route and is pleased to introduce their ‘Door Secure Team’ to the market.

Starring ex-Gladiator The Wolf and adopting an amusing approach to a serious subject, the Door Secure Team set about demonstrating in a dramatic fashion that some roller doors on the market are just not up to the job, lacking in even the most basic quality and security features. Filmed in ‘real life’ conditions at a recent roller door installation, the company wants to point out that no operatives were injured during the video's filming.

Available to view on the Hörmann YouTube channel, the ‘Door Secure Team’ video is being supported by an extensive paid social media campaign which will link consumers to the video, and then onto the Hörmann dealer network with the ultimate aim of generating extra sales volume. The video is also available to the Hörmann dealer network for use in their own promotional activities.

David O’Mara, Marketing Manager at Hörmann UK, comments:
“Our new ‘Door Secure Team’ video is the next stage in our continued promotion of what Hörmann considers an important message to the end consumer – not all roller garage doors are the same. In fact, some of the doors that are being offered in the market at increasingly low prices are not fit for purpose.
Our Door Secure Team simply highlights the key issues, especially how easy it is to break into a cheap door - an issue that has been circulating via online trade forums for some time.
All we have done is to package it in a clear, understandable, yet creative way so that this message can be easily explained to end users and to make them aware of some of the pitfalls currently being seen in the market. We want to encourage a value for money approach, charging a fair price for a secure, reliable roller door rather than continuing to see a drive to the bottom both in terms of price and quality.”

This latest video follows the launch earlier this year of RollMatic T ‘Watch before you buy’ - a factual and informative film produced to provide advice to end consumers on what to look for when choosing a roller door.

Widely distributed via Hörmann social media channels, the campaign has already generated well over seven thousand views of the video, and the company reports that they have seen sales of their RollMatic roller doors increase by 40% when compared with this time last year

Aston Martin Vanquish Unveiled with Stunning World Premiere in Venice

Aston Martin last night heralded the arrival of Vanquish, its new V12 flagship sports car set to redefine driving dynamism for a new generation of drivers.

Amidst the starlit backdrop of the Venice International Film Festival, Aston Martin unveiled its highly anticipated new Vanquish with a stunning reveal moment on the waters of the Venetian Lagoon.

An intimate audience spanning the worlds of cinema, the arts, fashion and business gathered at the Marina Militare for the grand premiere and headline music performances from Grammy-nominated musician Masego, multi-award-winning Italian jazz performer Walter Ricci and international DJ James Righton.

Stars of cinema in attendance included five Academy Award winning actors. George Clooney, alongside wife Amal, joined Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Douglas, Kevin Costner and Adrien Brody.

They were joined by celebrated personalities from the worlds of entertainment, the arts and culture, including Australian actor and filmmaker Joel Edgerton, American actresses Haley Bennett and Cailee Spaeny, and BAFTA award-winning director Joe Wright.

In the year that Aston Martin celebrates the 60th anniversary of its iconic association with the James Bond films, other talent present included Bond actor Daniel Craig, alongside fellow British stars Joe Alwyn and Micheal Ward.

The world of fashion was represented by three-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell and models Bianca Brandolini and Poppy Delevingne.

The evening began with a cocktail reception lining the canal whilst guests enjoyed an array of famous film scores with traditional Venetian Bellinis.

Guests were treated to a three-course culinary experience by restaurant Dolada, which holds the longest-standing Michelin Star in Italy, with cuisine responsibly sourced by Chef Riccardo De Prà in the surrounding areas of his Pieve d'Alpago restaurant.

With a history dating back to 1104, the Arsenale di Venezia provided a fitting location for Aston Martin’s brand, sitting at the intersection of storied hand manufacturing, culture and art.

The Arsenale was at the forefront of shipbuilding innovation, noted for its early use of assembly-line production techniques.

Today, as well as being an operational base for the Italian Navy, it proudly embodies culture as the host venue of the acclaimed Venice Biennale international art exhibition, which celebrates its 60th edition in 2024.

The Arsenale is considered by historians as one of the earliest large-scale industrial enterprises, accommodating 2,000 workers a day during the Middle Ages, each contributing by hand to the fleets of La Serenissima.

An automotive piece of art, Vanquish completes Aston Martin’s portfolio of next-generation front-engine sports cars, capping one of the most intensive periods of product development in the company’s rich 111-year history.

Revealed by Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso just 24 hours after the chequered flag at the Italian Grand Prix, the Vanquish launch further solidifies Aston Martin’s connectivity between road and track and the brand’s ambition to be the leading force in high performance.

It follows on from the successful launches of DB12 in May 2023 - revealed on the eve of the amfAR Gala Cannes - and Vantage in February 2024, launched on the same day as Aston Martin’s 2024 Formula One® car, at the home of British motorsport, Silverstone.

Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin, said:
“The arrival of Vanquish is a seminal moment for Aston Martin, completing the newest and strongest portfolio in our segment and reinforcing our ultra-luxury positioning.
“This launch toasts the renaissance of our iconic brand and the unique combination of timeless design, craft mastery and engineering innovation which defines our new generation of sportscars.
“Our flagship product, Vanquish embodies our commitment to both ultra-luxury and high performance, bringing Aston Martin to a new generation of drivers.”

Delivered with scarcity, Vanquish will be Aston Martin’s highest-performance sports car in its core product line-up and its most exclusive, with production limited to no greater than 1,000 examples per year.

Unique in this portfolio, Vanquish is the sole model to feature a bespoke, Aston Martin developed 12-cylinder engine.

Revived for the first time since 2018, this will be the third Aston Martin generation christened with the famous Vanquish nameplate.

The original V12 edition launched in 2001 has played a prominent on-screen role in cinema, driven by James Bond in the 2002 film Die Another Day and making appearances in other films of the 2000s such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The Italian Job. Now, it steals the spotlight once again.
