Section 35: An Opportunity for Excellence

As the call for demonstrable competency continues, Nicola John, Managing Director of Fire Door Maintenance (FDM) Training and Development, discusses what this means for the fire door industry, how we must stop working in silos and how, with Section 35 of the Building Safety Act, the government is offering us all an opportunity to rise to excellence.

The Building Safety Act (BSA) has raised the bar on competency and operational and professional standards; yet much confusion around what this looks like in practice continues throughout the industry.

Safer Environments Through Shared Commitment

Eight years after Dame Judith Hackitt’s pioneering report and amid the ongoing implementation of the BSA, the construction sector stands at a key moment of opportunity, as many professionals have yet to fully understand how the BSA shapes their responsibilities. 85% of respondents in a recent Constructionline survey revealed that many industry professionals misunderstand the legislation. This current ambiguity offers an opportunity to promote better understanding and encourage shared accountability across the industry.

The fact is, everyone involved in a building project has an essential role to play in upholding compliance and safety. Regulators also now have new means to sustain these standards, signalling a shift from simply meeting minimum requirements to embracing a culture of proactive safety leadership. By embedding safety as a core value, businesses can transform operations in ways that help protect people and improve reputations.

Together, the construction sector can turn this moment into lasting progress, building safer environments through shared values and innovation.

Building Industry Values

Much of the lack of clarity and current confusion around the BSA comes from the fact that it doesn’t provide prescriptive, step-by-step instructions and instead offers a goal-setting framework. And while this approach may allow for uncertainty, we need to view it as an invitation.

Rather than waiting for a regulator to hand us a checklist, we have the opportunity to help write the rules. Rather than rigid guidelines stifling innovation, we can help create the standards as experts and professionals in the industry. Section 35 asks us to think about buildings as complex, interconnected systems rather than a series of isolated trades and insists that our buildings are safe and that we can prove it.

Dame Judith Hackitt referenced other high-risk sectors as the model to follow. In oil and gas, it was industry that led the charge, not government. ‘They sorted themselves out and then went back to government,’ she said. ‘That's how systemic change happens.’ The construction and fire safety sectors should learn from the post-Piper Alpha reforms and adapt those principles to the sector’s fragmentation and existing building regulation regimes.

This is our chance to build a commercial environment where quality wins contracts, making competency a distinct competitive advantage.

Untangling the Thread

For fire doors, this requires provable competence and confidence around specification, installation, and maintenance. Not only installers, everyone involved in the lifecycle of a fire door holds a piece of the puzzle, and competency must start at the very beginning.

The BSA requires a ‘golden thread’ of digital information, which creates an accurate, up-to-date, and secure record of a building’s safety data across its entire lifecycle. With fire doors, the building owner needs to know exactly what the door is, who installed it, what components it uses, and how to maintain it. Unfortunately, the golden thread is currently tangled, as the market remains fragmented and disconnected. This working in silos was part of Dame Judith Hackitt's criticism of the pre-Grenfell construction landscape, and it must change to allow the golden thread of information to become the brilliant safety concept it was intended to be.

Creating a Legacy of Safety

To achieve industry excellence, we must stop operating in silos. Manufacturers, specifiers, and installers should work together in a way that proves competence, helping ensure that everyone who walks onto a site knows exactly who’s accountable and can trust they have the necessary skills to do the job right. If we take the lead with this now, we’ll help to shape the future of our sector and start building a legacy of genuine safety.

Individuals and organisations now have a duty to demonstrate competence across the construction supply chain. This means having the appropriate skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours needed for the role, and organisations must ensure their teams have the right support, capacity, skills and resources to meet the requirements of the BSA.

For the fire door industry, demonstrable competence is required from everyone involved in the lifecycle of the door, from specifiers and buyers to installers and responsible persons. The British Standards Institution (BSI) has a defined framework to outline what competency looks like through its four core pillars of skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours (SKEBs), demonstrating how each can be evidenced in practice. However, published in February this year, the Government’s Construction Products Reform Whitepaper stated there’s still a widespread lack of competence across the supply chain from product design through to installation, highlighting a continued lack of clarity around what competency actually means.

Demonstrable Competence is Key

For fire door installers, maintainers and responsible persons, competency must come from practical, hands-on learning and assessments, along with vital up-to-date theory. While installation qualifications can be gained from online or exclusively classroom-based courses with no product-handling element at all, let alone the real-world experience of installing or inspecting a fire door in actual site conditions, we need to ask: does this really deliver the competence the BSA demands?

Being competent to fit a life-saving piece of engineering simply can’t be achieved by clicking through a multiple-choice test on a tablet. A computer can’t teach a fitter or maintenance worker how to deal with a warped frame, an uneven floor, or a non-standard wall structure. Real competency requires practical proof, and those who deal with fire doors need to get their hands on the materials. They need to feel the tolerances, understand the hardware, and physically work with the systems they are signing off on. Unfortunately, theoretical knowledge doesn’t stop fires.

A Driver for Change

The continued call for demonstrable competency offers a powerful leadership opportunity for large contractors, who have the ability to steer substantial change and establish new standards for the entire supply chain. By advocating accredited practical training and regulated qualifications, industry leaders can establish a culture of safety in which every site requires provable expertise. As this new benchmark ripples throughout the sector, professionalism, quality and trust will be strengthened across the industry.

With Section 35 of the BSA, the government is giving us the space to help define what excellence looks like, and the industry needs to take on this task as true experts and thought leaders. We have an important chance as a collective to set standards high for the built environment of the future and an opportunity to rise to excellence.

Polar NE secure NHS contract on ‘completely unique’ £65m hospital project

A window and door specialist has secured a major new contract to help construct a £65m NHS mental health hospital.

Middlesbrough-based Polar NE will install more than 150 reduced-ligature windows and doors at Bradford's Lynfield Mount Hospital.

Yet incredibly, the team won't initially step foot in Yorkshire.

Instead, Polar NE will install the windows over 300 miles away at a factory in Lisburn, near Belfast - before each 'living room-sized' unit is carefully shipped across the Irish Sea.

It is another example of this unique style of construction - known as modular - being used to build an NHS mental health hospital.

"We have worked on modular builds for traditional hospitals, but this is a complete unique mental health space, and we hope it will act as the blueprint for other projects going forward," said Polar NE's Partnership Manager, Nick Sutton.

"Many trusts will want to see the result, because there is so much belief in the modular approach. It is safer, quicker and provides a much more controlled environment throughout the build.

"Securing another key NHS contract shows the trust repeatedly placed in Polar NE on projects like this, where innovation is so crucial."

The project - headed up by main contractor McAvoy Group - will see the current central building refurbished, with en-suite facilities added across two wards, while an extra two-storey ward will be added to the existing site.

Outdoor garden spaces and recreational areas are also set to be added as part of the redevelopment, which is expected to be complete in 2028.

According to Polar NE's Operations Manager Rob Lofthouse, the work will see the award-winning company "use a bit of everything" from its innovative range of unique products.

These include Polar’s secure window and door products, developed specifically for demanding healthcare environments.

"This is exactly the type of project where our experience and product range come together," added Rob.

"Time and time again, we find solutions that meet the very specific needs of mental health environments, and if we don't have them, we are uniquely skilled in that we can create them from scratch.

"Additionally, Lynfield Mount Hospital marks the latest collaboration between Polar NE, P+HS Architects and Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, and it shows the confidence and trust repeatedly placed in us when it comes to delivering complex projects.

"These projects require close collaboration, innovation, and a genuine understanding of what healthcare providers need - it is a sector we've pushed the envelope in for over 25 years - and we are thrilled to once again be doing that at Lynfield Mount Hospital."

Novoferm Insulated Roller Door Achieves SBD Accreditation

Security is an increasingly important consideration in residential design, particularly when it comes to garage doors. Often used to store valuable items, and in many cases providing direct access into the home, garage doors can represent a potential point of vulnerability if not properly secured.

To address this, Novoferm’s Novorol 77 insulated roller garage door has now been added to the company’s range of Secured by Design (SBD) accredited products. The roller garage door incorporates 77mm insulated slats, providing enhanced strength and durability compared with standard roller door systems. The door is suitable for openings up to 3 metres wide and is designed and accredited for behind fit installation, while still offering flexibility for a wide range of garage structures.

Novoferm’s Novorol 77mm roller garage door has been tested to STS222 and achieved BR1 classification, demonstrating resistance to realistic intrusion attempts. Certification is independently verified through Element, a UKAS-recognised certification body, ensuring the product meets recognised industry security standards.

As part of the SBD accreditation process, the product is subject to regular re-testing and factory inspections, helping ensure that manufacturing standards and security performance remain consistent over time. This ongoing verification provides reassurance to installers, specifiers and end users that the door continues to meet the required security criteria.

For trade professionals, specifying an SBD accredited garage door can provide additional reassurance for clients, particularly where security is a key consideration. It also helps demonstrate that reasonable security measures have been implemented, which can support insurance requirements and compliance with local authority guidance in certain developments.

By combining independent security testing and police-recognised accreditation, the new SBD Novorol 77 Roller garage door offers a solution designed to meet the demands of modern residential security, while still maintaining the convenience and aesthetic appeal expected from a roller garage door system.

The value of partnership

In the door and hardware sector, the most effective solutions rarely come from a catalogue alone. They come from conversation and a clear understanding of what a customer is wanting to achieve. There also needs to be willingness to work through challenges that are faced by the customer together.

Karen Nelson, business development manager at HOPPE (UK), details the company’s approach to customer collaboration, with insight from Robust’s commercial director Paul Williams.

For HOPPE, success is not simply about supplying hardware. It is about listening to customer needs, applying technical expertise and helping customers reach the right outcome for their market.

Its long-standing relationship with steel door manufacturer Robust UK is a strong example of that approach in action.

Over the past decade, the conventional supplier relationship has developed into something deeper. It is a prime example of a working partnership built on trust, continuity and a detailed understanding of a customer’s business.

Learning through collaboration

That depth of knowledge matters when a new requirement emerges. Robust recently identified a need for a cost-effective PAS 24-compliant panic exit hardware solution for its single and double steel security doors, bridging the gap between a basic low-cost offering and significantly more expensive higher security options.

The collaborative process began with exploratory testing using standard panic hardware from ARRONE, a HOPPE brand, and a typical door from Robust. This provided a benchmark and helped the team better understand the test itself. The early result provided valuable insight and was a crucial stage in development to help shape the solution required.

That first stage gave both businesses a clearer picture of what needed to change. Robust gained a better understanding of what was needed from the door, while HOPPE used the findings to refine and develop a more appropriate hardware solution. It was a process rooted in openness and problem solving.

As Paul Williams, commercial director at Robust, explains: “Both sides needed a clear understanding of the project goals and the flexibility to adapt their part of the solution to achieve them.”

Engineering support that adds value

Dan Savage, product engineer at HOPPE, played a central role in that development journey.

His involvement spanned research, design and testing, giving the project a more streamlined path from concept to refinement. The company invested in additional test equipment so it could build its own testing capability further, carry out more indicative work in-house and go into third-party testing with greater confidence.

From Robust’s perspective, that practical support was important. Paul added: “HOPPE took the lead in arranging early test fitting and indicative testing of the new SECUR-DOR 2.1, helping to prove the approach before Robust committed it to a full-scale test programme.”

All of that speaks to one of the biggest strengths HOPPE brings to customer relationships, which is practical support backed by technical expertise. Huge investment is made in training to help staff achieve the widely respected qualifications from the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI).

A relationship built to last

In the case of Robust, the relationship already had strong foundations. Years of liaison with the same team had created familiarity, responsiveness and mutual confidence.

Paul said: “HOPPE has demonstrated over time that it understands the Robust business, its product requirements and where value can be engineered into a solution without compromising quality.”

The wider benefits of partnership working are clear. There is the pooling of resources, with each side contributing what it knows and what it can do. Shared knowledge and learning help to improve the final outcome.

There is also the longer-term value that comes from the process including the confidence, capability and insight that can be taken into future projects.

“This strengthened partnership sets the scene for future collaboration and a better understanding of how to define the initial specification at the outset of a development project,” adds Paul.

Partnerships like this bolster HOPPE’s position, not just as a supplier, but as a responsive, solution-led partner with the engineering flexibility to tackle new challenges.

The relationship with Robust reflects a mindset that HOPPE wants to bring to customer partnerships more broadly.

It is a mindset built around listening first, staying engaged and being open to new ideas. Not every project follows a straight line. But when both sides are prepared to share expertise, work through obstacles and keep sight of the end goal, the result is often better than either could achieve alone.

Why partnership matters

In a market shaped by regulation, performance demands and commercial pressure, that kind of partnership has real value. The relationship between HOPPE and Robust shows that finding the right solution is not about forcing a standard answer. It is about understanding the challenge, bringing the right knowledge to the table, and working together to achieve the best possible outcome.

A major transformation and revitalisation of a Newport city centre shopping district has been supported by specialist independent trade fabricator Fentrade Limited.

The project saw the creation of a complete new shopping area within the Kingsway Centre with nine sets of shopfront doors and screens manufactured in RAL9005 matt black finish from Jack Aluminium profiles. The new shopping area will make more space available for small local traders to access start-up retail units and complement the recent addition of a traditional market and entertainment area in the Kingsway.

Commenting on this latest commercial undertaking, Chris Reeks, Fentrade’s Managing Director, was pleased with the outcome: “Newport is one of the fastest-growing cities in Wales and it's been a pleasure to work with the Kingsway Centre to help them develop a shopping experience that will drive more visitors to the city centre. Working closely with their team we provided open, bright and welcoming entrances to appeal to traders and shoppers alike.”

Fentrade’s commercial offering has continued to grow and it has become a go-to fabricator for trade installers requiring high-quality GFT shopfronts and screens suitable for multiple applications. The Kingsway project required non-thermally broken screens with easy-to-use yet secure locking and single glazed laminated panes, but Fentrade’s portfolio also encompasses thermally broken profile systems with multiple options of standard, secure and emergency-access locking.

“Being involved in such a project in our home town is a great source of pride for our team and us as a company”, continues Chris, “and it is also exciting for our products to form an integral part of a drive to increase footfall into the city centre when other high street shopping areas are struggling.”

ROBUST UK LAUNCHES NEW ADJUSTABLE DOOR HEAD EXTENSIONS

Robust UK, one of the UK's leading manufacturers of steel door solutions, now offers adjustable head extensions free of charge on all non-certified doorsets on request.

This innovative solution is designed to cover gaps of up to 15mm between the frame header and the structural opening. Unlike conventional solutions such as spacers and mastic that simply fill gaps, the adjustable frame header extension creates a professional-looking installation, every time, enhancing the overall appearance.

Fitters will welcome the fact that the adjustable extensions for door headers avoid the need for frame packers, and dispensing of the need for mastic will also ensure a more aesthetically pleasing result for the end customer.

Ultimately, Robust’s new adjustable header extensions reduce the risk of remakes or unsightly gaps following site survey mis-measurements or in the instance of particularly out-of-square structural openings, supporting smoother project delivery and avoiding unnecessary cost.

Installation is simple and efficient thanks to the use of jacking screws, and each unit is manufactured so that it can be trimmed on-site to the exact required length, ensuring a precise finish every time.

Previously, gaps of up to 10mm would have required filling with mastic, a process that could delay projects, look unsightly, increase costs and often involved specialist trades. Robust’s new adjustable header extensions eliminate these issues and increases the gap tolerance by 5mm, allowing fitters to complete installations quickly and efficiently while maintaining a high-quality finish.

Paul Williams, Commercial Director at Robust, explains: "Our new adjustable head extensions provide installers and project managers with the ability to achieve an aesthetically pleasing finish to a doorset, even on challenging projects. It was developed in response to customer requests for a completely flexible solution, allowing customers to overcome any issues with mis-measurements up to 15mm between the frame header and structural opening.”

Growing Through Downturn - Leadership, Innovation and Opportunity in Challenging Markets

It is easy to be optimistic when markets are buoyant. Demand is strong, order books are healthy and growth can sometimes feel like it is happening naturally. The real test of leadership comes when economic conditions become more challenging. When investment decisions are delayed, projects are scrutinised more heavily and businesses across the supply chain face increasing pressure on costs, confidence and margins...

The entrance systems sector, like many parts of the construction industry, has experienced its share of challenges in recent years. Economic uncertainty, inflationary pressures, skills shortages and shifting regulatory requirements have all influenced the environment in which businesses operate.

Yet difficult markets should not simply be viewed as something to endure. They can also provide an opportunity to rethink, innovate and strengthen the foundations for future growth.

"The businesses that emerge strongest from challenging periods are often those that continue to invest, adapt and focus on delivering genuine value to customers," says Ken Price, Managing Director of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA). "Growth doesn't stop during difficult periods. It simply requires a different approach."

Looking Beyond Products to Solutions

One of the most significant shifts across many sectors is a move from selling individual products to delivering complete solutions.

Customers are increasingly looking for partners who can help solve problems rather than simply supply components. Whether that relates to accessibility, compliance, fire safety, security, energy efficiency or user experience, the conversation is often broader than a single product specification.

For manufacturers and suppliers, this presents an opportunity to review product portfolios and consider how products can be grouped and positioned around customer needs.

Product lifecycle management is not simply about introducing new products. It is about understanding which products provide added value, which have reached the end of their commercial lifecycle (technically, aesthetically or through lack of customer demand) and where investment should be focused to meet emerging market requirements.

Rationalising product ranges can improve efficiency, simplify customer choice and create clearer market propositions. At the same time, investment in innovation remains essential.

"The most successful innovations are often those that respond directly to identifiable challenges faced by customers, installers, building owners and end users," says Ken. "The businesses that maintain a clear understanding of customer needs are often the ones best positioned to identify opportunities, even during periods of economic uncertainty."

Innovation Born from Necessity

Some of the most significant innovations in entrance systems have emerged not during periods of prosperity, but during periods of challenge.

COVID-19 is an obvious example. Faced with unprecedented restrictions, the industry responded quickly and creatively. Existing technologies were adapted, new applications were developed and businesses found practical ways to help society reopen safely.

Functions around powered pedestrian doors became part of wider strategies to reduce touchpoints and improve hygiene. Entrance systems were incorporated into solutions designed to manage foot traffic, control occupancy levels and support social distancing requirements. Products were adapted and repositioned to solve new challenges almost overnight.

"What began as a response to an immediate crisis demonstrated something important about our sector. Innovation is often born from necessity. Businesses adapted incredibly quickly to help organisations manage access, control movement through buildings and create safer environments."

Many of those developments delivered benefits that extended far beyond the pandemic itself. It shone a light on the importance of regular maintenance, technical integration and smart building development.

"The lesson remains relevant," reflects Ken. "Challenging markets should not simply be viewed as obstacles to growth. They can also become catalysts for innovation, collaboration and change."

Culture Matters More Than Ever

While products and services are important, organisational culture often becomes the defining factor during difficult trading conditions.

When markets become more challenging, it is natural for businesses to focus heavily on financial performance and operational efficiency. These are clearly important considerations. However, organisations should be careful not to overlook the role people play in driving long-term success.

Motivated, engaged and empowered teams are more likely to identify opportunities, solve problems and deliver exceptional service.

Leadership during uncertain times requires visibility, communication and trust. People need to understand not only the challenges facing a business but also the strategy for navigating them.

The most resilient organisations are often those where employees understand how their individual contribution connects to wider business objectives, invests in supportive cultures including motivation and morale. This can help create ‘an employer brand’ which in itself can support recruitment.

This is particularly relevant in sectors such as entrance systems, where technical expertise, customer service and specialist knowledge remain critical differentiators.

"Investment in human resources, workplace culture and professional development should not be viewed as a luxury that can be postponed until conditions improve," reiterates Ken. "The skills developed during difficult periods often become the foundation for future growth."

Within ADSA, this commitment is reflected through training programmes, qualifications, apprenticeships and professional development initiatives designed to support competence across the sector.

"If we want to grow as an industry, we have to continue investing in people," he says. "Competence, professionalism and technical expertise will remain critical differentiators."

Can You Market Yourself Out of a Downturn?

Marketing alone cannot overcome fundamental business challenges. However, effective marketing can play a significant role in helping businesses maintain visibility, build confidence and position themselves for future opportunities.

One of the most common mistakes businesses make during difficult trading periods is reducing marketing activity at precisely the moment when it becomes most important.

When markets contract, competition for available opportunities inevitably increases. Customers become more selective and decision-making processes become longer and more complex.

Businesses that continue to communicate consistently, demonstrate expertise and remain visible often place themselves in a stronger position when investment decisions are eventually made.

There are encouraging signs that many organisations recognise this. Recent industry research suggests marketing investment is expected to increase despite ongoing economic uncertainty, reflecting a growing recognition that visibility and brand strength remain critical drivers of business growth.

"One of the biggest mistakes organisations can make is disappearing from view when conditions become more difficult. Visibility creates confidence. Confidence creates opportunity,” states Ken.

Marketing should not be viewed solely as promotion. It is about education, engagement and leadership. Technical content, thought leadership, case studies, training events, webinars and industry collaboration all help reinforce credibility and demonstrate value.

The question businesses should ask is whether they can afford not to market themselves while competitors remain visible.

The Role of Manufacturers in Driving Growth

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have a particularly important role to play in supporting growth across the entrance systems sector.

Manufacturers often sit at the centre of innovation, technical development and product advancement. Their investment decisions can have a significant influence on the wider market. However, their role extends far beyond simply bringing new products to market.

To drive sustainable growth, manufacturers need confidence in their product ranges and a clear understanding of where future opportunities lie. That requires continual assessment of product lifecycles, identifying where products continue to meet market needs, where ranges may need rationalising and where investment in new product development can deliver the greatest value.

"Product development should never happen in isolation," reflects Ken. The most successful manufacturers are constantly gathering intelligence from customers, installers, specifiers and the wider market. They are looking at what people want today, what they are likely to need tomorrow and where challenges are emerging.”

Understanding customer wants, needs and aspirations has become increasingly important as building requirements evolve. Issues such sustainability, for example, continue to shape purchasing decisions and specification requirements.

Manufacturers that actively monitor these trends are often better placed to anticipate demand rather than simply react to it.

"In many respects, this is where marketing becomes far more than a communications function. Good marketing is about insight. It's about understanding the market, identifying opportunities and using that intelligence to inform business decisions."

This intelligence can then be used to shape product strategies, guide investment decisions and support future innovation.

"The strongest businesses are constantly listening," he continues. "They are gathering feedback, analysing trends and using that information to evolve their offer. That might mean adapting existing products, developing entirely new solutions or grouping products differently to better address customer challenges."

This approach has become increasingly important as customers move away from purchasing individual products and towards seeking integrated solutions.

"Customers rarely wake up looking for a product," Ken adds. "They are looking for a solution to a problem. The manufacturers that understand those problems and design their offer around solving them are often the ones that create long-term growth."

Looking Ahead

Economic cycles are inevitable. Markets rise, markets fall and external factors will continue to influence the operating environment for every business. The challenge for leaders is not to predict every change but to build organisations that are resilient enough to adapt.

That resilience comes from maintaining a clear strategic focus, investing in people, understanding customer needs and continuing to innovate even when conditions are difficult.

For the entrance systems sector, there remains much to be positive about. The need for safe, accessible, secure and compliant entrance systems is not diminishing. If anything, the importance of these considerations continues to grow.

"The opportunity for all of us is to ensure we are ready to meet those needs, not only when conditions improve, but while the challenges remain," concludes Ken. "The businesses that achieve that balance will be the ones best positioned to lead the next phase of growth for our sector."

Design & Supply: Committed to Safer Buildings Through Secured by Design

For nearly 40 years, Design & Supply has remained committed to one simple principle: delivering steel doorsets that perform as intended. Through continued investment in testing, certification and manufacturing expertise, the company has built a reputation for supplying independently verified solutions that meet the demands of modern construction.

Since 1986, Design & Supply has been manufacturing and supplying steel door solutions from its facility in Merthyr Tydfil, supporting projects across the UK. From security-rated and fire-rated doorsets to flood protection and Slimline architectural systems, independent testing and certification have remained central to the company's approach.

As security requirements continue to evolve across the construction environment, architects, specifiers and contractors are increasingly looking for products that offer more than manufacturer claims alone. They need confidence that the products they specify have been independently assessed, tested and proven to perform in real-world applications.

For Design & Supply, this commitment to independently verified performance is reflected through its membership of Secured by Design (SBD), the official police security initiative that promotes the use of products and standards proven to reduce crime and improve security.

Secured by Design works to create safer places through effective security standards and the specification of accredited products. Its Police Preferred Specification accreditation provides reassurance that products have undergone rigorous testing and meet recognised security requirements.

The principles behind Secured by Design closely align with Design & Supply's approach to manufacturing. Across utility compounds, national defence installations, substations, critical infrastructure and public-sector facilities, security forms a fundamental part of the overall building specification.

These environments often require security, fire protection, thermal performance, durability and architectural considerations to work together without compromise. Where unauthorised access can have significant operational and safety implications, independently tested security solutions provide confidence that buildings, assets and essential services remain protected.

To support these applications, Design & Supply manufactures a range of security-rated steel doorsets independently tested and certified to LPCB LPS 1175 SR1, SR2, SR3 and SR4 levels. These ratings provide clearly defined levels of protection, allowing architects and specifiers to select the most appropriate solution for the specific risks associated with a project.

Tom Grother, Director at Design & Supply, said: "For architects, specifiers and contractors, independent testing provides confidence that a product has been assessed against recognised standards and will perform as expected. Our membership with Secured by Design reflects our commitment to providing proven, tested solutions that support safer buildings and environments."

For Design & Supply, continued investment in testing, certification and product development remains central to the company's long-term strategy. By maintaining independently certified products through UKAS accredited test bodies and supporting initiatives such as Secured by Design, the business continues to provide solutions to meet the evolving demands of modern construction.

By combining proven manufacturing expertise with independently certified products, Design & Supply continues to support safer buildings through Secured by Design principles.
