Cut The Confusion With Security Advice From Yale

Standards and legislation surrounding windows and doors are constantly evolving, and Yale understands the importance of complying with the very latest developments. As a result, the team is on hand to offer their expert advice to ensure you are manufacturing and installing compliant products.

One such standard that has recently been revised is PAS24:2016. The updated door standard now stipulates that any external doors to be fitted with a letterplate must meet the new criteria set out in TS008. In order to meet the TS008 testing requirements, the letterplate must eliminate the risk of a potential burglar gaining access by means of physical force or through ‘fishing’ and unlocking of the door through the letterplate aperture.

Notably, this is being enforced by Police approved scheme, Secured by Design, who are making it compulsory for all OEM license holders to meet the revised PAS24:2016 standard. This will drive demand for high-end letterplate solutions and create an increased awareness of the TS008 standard across the industry.

PAS 24 is a primary reference in the Building Regulation’s Approved Document Q, which relates to security in residential properties. Changes to the latest specification include more robust, stringent requirements for letterplates and a wider scope that increases the range of security doorsets.

Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale Door and Window Solutions, said:
“Security standards are continually revisited and rewritten to keep up with the new and sophisticated ways burglars are employing to break into our homes. We understand that this can be confusing for our customers, so we’re on hand to offer insight and advice to ensure they’re providing compliant products to homeowners.
“Not only can we help bring you up to speed with the latest revisions for TS008, we can also provide information and advice on a range of other industry standards and schemes including Approved Document Q, TS007 and Secured by Design.”

Yale offers expert advice on safeguarding residents and properties with its updated RIBA accredited CPD seminar - ‘Specifying Windows and Doors Safety, Security, Means of Escape and Best Value’ .

For further information about the latest standards or compliant products available, please call 01902 366800 or visit www.yaledws.co.uk. Here you will also find a dedicated ‘specification’ section that details each of the CPD seminars on offer from Yale. You can also submit an enquiry to arrange your free CPD presentation.

DHF produces comprehensive guide to benefits of complete Timber Doorsets

Door & Hardware Federation’s (DHF) Timber Doorset Group has produced a comprehensive guide to the benefits of ‘factory prepared complete timber doorsets’.

The group actively promotes the commercial and legal benefits of specifying complete timber doorsets, as opposed to purchasing individual components from various sources; they are then made up on site.  And with an all-inclusive list of benefits now available in an easy-to-download publication, it is anticipated that building professionals such as specifiers, architects and contractors will achieve a wider understanding and recognise the advantages to purchasing a complete product, including those involved in the modular build market.

The new DHF publication lists the many benefits of choosing a complete timber doorset, primarily, that these products derive from one single source of supply, are quality-controlled products and will ultimately, result in cost-savings as all necessary items are included.  In addition, using a complete timber doorset is a greener option, as they are engineered for energy efficiency and sustainability.

“In everyone’s minds, recent events have brought to the fore, the premise that a poorly fitted door, or one that has had the integrity compromised, can be a liability,” explains DHF Marketing Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.  “DHF believes that installing a complete doorset that has been tested as a complete unit, manufactured under a third-party certification scheme, installed and maintained by a company certified to do so under third-party certification, provides peace of mind, reduced installation time and ultimately, costs.

“It is a 'no fuss' solution, with no need to purchase separate components as everything is included.  In addition, complete doorsets can be installed later in the building process, reducing the risk of on-site damage whilst works are on-going and are a perfect solution for modular builds.  There are so many advantages to purchasing a complete doorset and we believe that DHF’s latest publication will enable a greater understanding of the benefits of selecting these products.”

With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service. They all operate within a Code of Conduct governing standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety, business integrity and CE marking compliance.

dormakaba to Showcase Newly LPCB-Accredited Padlocks at Security & Counter Terror Expo

Leading manufacturer of access and security solutions, dormakaba, has achieved a new quality standard with the approval of LPCB (Loss Prevention Council Board) for its range of CEN-rated padlocks.

Delegates at the Security & Counter Terror Expo 2018, taking place at Olympia London on the 6th March and 7th March, will be able to see the extensive range - now certified to LPS 1654: Issue 1, at booth K61.

Part of the Building Research Establishment (BRE), the LPCB works with the government and industry professionals to set minimum standards to ensure that fire and security products perform effectively.

LPS 1654: Issue 1 is the latest physical security standard and includes the highest level of attack testing for padlocks. The crucial difference between this and other testing standards – such as CEN – is that the security rating classification is determined by the time it takes to remove a padlock based on different types of commonly used tools.

Accreditation is only received through rigorous third-party testing and is designed to offer maximum protection for the UK’s infrastructure sectors. Manufactured from hardened steel, the dormakaba padlocks, which have achieved LPS 1654: Issue 1, will be on display at this year’s Security & Counter Terror Expo.

Clive Baker, Director of Security Locking at dormakaba commented:
“For those looking to make a robust specification for high security locations – this is an important accreditation to look for. Achieving LPS 1654: Issue 1 status provides our customers with reassurance of the reliability, security and performance of dormakaba padlocks and highlights our continued commitment to industry best practice.”

For further information on dormakaba’s range of LCPB-certified padlocks, please visit: www.dormakaba.co.uk

HRH the Duke of Cambridge rides in to visit Triumph Motorcycles

Triumph Motorcycles welcomed His Royal Highness, the Duke of Cambridge last Monday, to its UK factory in Hinckley.

Prince William viewed a brand new, £6 million paint shop facility and even took to the saddle himself on one of Triumph’s newest and most exciting adventure motorcycles, the Tiger 1200.

The paint shop, a major new investment at Triumph’s Leicestershire headquarters, will be pressed into operation in the spring of this year. Meanwhile, the Duke took a tour of the rest of the factory as well as Triumph’s Factory Visitor Experience (FVE), which was recently opened to the public.

Later, he unveiled a commemorative fuel tank emblazoned with a Union Jack design in Triumph’s striking colours which was hand painted on site by one of Triumph’s official tank painters, to mark the visit and the opening of the FVE.

Triumph employs 900 people in the UK and, alongside further plants in Thailand, builds around 67,000 bikes every year.

Triumph CEO, Nick Bloor, who hosted the Duke during his visit, said:
“It was a delight to welcome His Royal Highness to Hinckley.”
“Thanks to the dedication and hard work of everyone at Triumph, our export business continues to grow and our outstanding design engineering team, in which we have invested heavily in recent years, is producing a stream of exciting motorcycles that captures the imagination of riders all over the world.”

During the visit, the Duke fixed a Triumph badge to the engine of a Triumph Tiger 1200 adventure motorcycle, one of the most recent new Triumph models launched. Known to be a keen biker, Prince William even tried out a Tiger 1200.

RAF Nursery Secured with Assa Abloy UK Specification

ASSA ABLOY UK Specification, a UK division of ASSA ABLOY, has specified a range of solutions for a new RAF nursery in Oxfordshire, delivering assured access and safety for children using the facility.

Working in partnership with designers Frankham Consultancy Group and contractors Antac, the company specified a series of door opening solutions to the new nursery at RAF Benson.

The RAF base required an extension to its existing nursery facilities, increasing its capacity to cater for more than 100 children. As a result, the specification process demanded products that were fully compliant and tailored to the needs of the young children that would be using this facility.

Products specified by ASSA ABLOY UK Specification include the DC500A CAM-Motion® door closer, delivering a low opening force while providing sufficient closing forces to satisfy fire legislation, and ASSA modular high-security deadlocks, delivering a strong locking solution for doors.

Other solutions specified include P600 cylinders, patented to ensure keys cannot be duplicated by unauthorised parties, and ScanFlex door furniture, offering classic Scandinavian design in a hard-wearing stainless steel.

The doorsets provided are all oak laminate with a horizontal grain, complete with PVC edges – making them easy to clean – and factory-painted frames, meaning the products arrive to site in their finished condition, ready for a quick installation. ASSA ABLOY UK Specification also supplied the graphics for the toilet doors in a self-adhesive vinyl.

With access and safety for young children of paramount importance, solutions such as ASSA finger guards – protecting children from accidentally trapping their fingers in doors – and thumb turn locks for the toilets, installed at a lower height, were other crucial considerations.

Discussing the requirements of this project, Matthew Beech, Associate at Frankham Consultancy Group, explains:
“For this kind of environment, the products specified needed to be completely fit for purpose and robust. Young children will be using this facility, and so products need to be built to last and ensure users can move about safely and easily.
“A key benefit to working with ASSA ABLOY UK Specification has been the fact they supply factory-fitted ironmongery doorsets. While not only reducing the amount of on-site workmanship required, this offering also means the risk of specifying incorrect ironmongery is significantly reduced.
“The service we have received from ASSA ABLOY UK Specification has been excellent. The team has been very efficient in following up any queries, ensuring there were no delays to site throughout the whole process.”

Doug Swadling, Site Manager from Antac, said:
“Specifying and installing ASSA ABLOY’s products could not have been a smoother process. We always received regular contact with the project manager and any questions I had were answered straight away, which was brilliant.
“The end result is fantastic – the building looks great. We’re so pleased that we managed to deliver a new nursery for RAF Benson with some of the best door solutions available on the market.”

David Shields, Specification Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY UK Specification, adds:
“The plans for the build were incredibly multifaceted, but – as we have access to such a wide range of products – we were able to adapt and supply a bespoke specification.
“On a project like this it’s not just about the products but also the added value that the team can provide. Performance guarantees, door scheduling and an understanding of the building’s ongoing use are invaluable.”

For those operating in the education sector, ASSA ABLOY UK Specification offers a range of sector-specific solutions, derived from thorough research into product usage and the flow of traffic for specific markets. Other insights, such as BIM objects and whole life costing, ensure the organisation can work with architects and design-led contractors to specify solutions that meet individual requirements and needs.

DHF stresses the importance of training following Roller Shutter door accident

Tamworth-based trade association, the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), is emphasising the significance of proper training, following the fining of a principal contractor, after a roller shutter door damaged a market stall in Walthamstow.

‘Flex D B Construction Ltd’ of Rydal Gardens, London, was found guilty of breaching Regulation 13 (1) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, and was ordered to pay a fine of £45,000, plus £4,064 costs, together with a victim surcharge of £170.

The accident, which took place in August of 2016, involved employees removing a roller shutter door on the boundary of a site on the High Street, when the door fell onto the pavement, badly damaging a market stall.  A subsequent investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that there was no risk assessment for the task of removing the roller shutter door and that the site manager was not on-site when the incident occurred; there was therefore no supervision of the workers.  The investigation also found that the site issues could have been rectified by appropriate planning, managing and monitoring of the construction work.

The fine follows the death of a man crushed by a roller shutter whilst engaged on shop fitting work at retail premises in Woking, in October 2017.  An investigation is underway.

Raising standards through on-going training has long been the clarion call underpinning DHF’s drive for higher quality and compliance.  Widely regarded as the ‘go-to experts’ with regards to technical expertise, information, knowledge, advice, and practical help, the organisation, which now has more than 400 members, has very recently launched a new code of practice (DHF TS 012:2018) designed to raise standards of safety in the industrial door industry.  It also offers a two-day Industrial Door Safety Diploma course for both members and non-members, as part of its continuing efforts to encourage a greater understanding of legislation affecting the supply, installation, inspection, risk assessment, maintenance, and repair of industrial doors.  A one-day Industrial Door Safety Diploma course for installers and engineers will be launching soon.

“It is absolutely essential that those with responsibility for installation, maintenance, repair and dismantling of potentially dangerous equipment are properly trained and working within the framework of the law,” says DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry.

“Fortunately, in this particular instance, there were no injuries, but this accident and the subsequent legal proceedings should serve as a stark warning that work on roller shutters should be carried out by trained operatives with careful planning.  Those who use DHF members can do so in the knowledge that the level of safety, quality and compliance we insist upon, is reinforced by comprehensive training and is subject to rigorous audit and inspection.”

For further information about industrial door training, please see: www.dhfonline.org.uk

Union Announces Launch of new HD72 Lockcase

UNION, has announced the launch of its new HD72 modular euro-profile lockcases, delivering unrivalled performance while meeting essential security standards.

Designed for areas where high performance, strength and durability are paramount, the new HD72 lockcases cover an extensive range of specifications, including sashlock, deadlock, mortice latch, deadlocking nightlatch, bathroom lock and an emergency escape lock.

Tested to more than three and a half million cycles - twelve times greater than the industry standard - the range's assured strength is supported by its superior durability, meeting the BS EN 12209 standard and offered with a 15-year guarantee.

The HD72 also features heavy duty springing and a one degree follower. This allows the HD72 lockcase to support handles weighing up to 930g, giving specifiers the freedom to be more design-led in projects, while helping to banish drooping levers. This is a common issue raised by property owners soon after the installation of lockcases provided by other manufacturers.

Its stylish design is enhanced via a two-piece square or radius forend, plus a splinter guard for a professional finish. Cast steel latches and deadbolts are also supplied with a durable chrome plated finish as standard throughout the range, with a further five optional finishes available in stainless steel, chrome and brass.

Karen Hubbard, Product Manager for Mortice Locks at UNION, explains:
"Our brand is synonymous with quality, reliability and expertise, and the new HD72 modular lockcases range are no exception. Ideal for both first-fit or easily retro-fitted to all doors, helping to save time and money, we are so confident in the HD72's capabilities that we're offering the range with a 15-year guarantee.
"Offering a long service life and proven reliability, our HD72 modular euro-profile lockcases are truly a 'fit-and-forget' solution."

DHF releases new Code of Practice for Industrial Door sector

A new code of practice (DHF TS 012:2018) designed to raise standards of safety in the industrial door industry has been announced by Tamworth-based trade association, the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF).

The Code of Practice for the Design, Manufacture, Installation and Maintenance of Industrial Doors and Domestic Garage Doors (DHF TS 012:2018) is the 13th in a series of DHF technical specifications covering the range of industry sectors represented by DHF and is available as a free download from www.dhfonline.org.uk

Providing a framework to ensure the safe and compliant installation of industrial doors and roller shutters, the code draws on safety legislation, European standards, and industry best practice.  It gives practical help to all those involved with industrial doors by providing clear guidance on their legal obligation and responsibilities.  The code took more than nine months to develop and going forward, will form the basis of the DHF comprehensive two-day Industrial Door Safety Diploma course.

The DHF’s Industrial Door Group now represents more than 273 UK manufacturers, suppliers, installers or maintainers of industrial doors and industrial door equipment.

“We welcome the release of DHF TS 012:2018 and see this as the ‘bible’ for those working with industrial doors and roller shutters,” says DHF Industrial Door Group Chairman, Dave Lewis.  “Currently, there are too many untrained people working in the sector and with some of these products weighing up to three tonnes, safety is absolutely vital.  If a door falls from 25-30 foot in the air causing an accident, the consequences can be life-changing for all concerned.”

“This new DHF code of practice condenses and refines information from UK and European law and standards to provide accurate, clear reference and guidance for those working with industrial doors,” says DHF CEO, Bob Perry.  “Reducing the ‘grey areas’ and supporting the requirements for competence and training at all levels in the process, we are confident that DHF TS 012:2018 will become the benchmark reference document setting standards across the industry.”

The Code of Practice DHF TS 012:2018 is available now from the dhf website

Email the DHF on info@dhfonline.org.uk or telephone 01827 52337 for further information.

Jacksons Fencing on the right approach to border security

The recent news of British Prime Minister, Theresa May’s commitment to an additional £44.5m in government funding to reinforce security at the UK’s border in Calais came during French President Emmanuel Macron’s first visit to the UK since his election in May 2017.

The two leaders met to discuss plans for a joint operation to manage the European refugee crisis and improve asylum claims processing at the French border.

The French and UK government’s aim is to prevent the creation of additional refugee camps in the channel port by investing in further safety and security measures as a chief priority. This investment will be spent on fencing, CCTV and detection technology in Calais and other ports along the channel.

In 2017 alone there were around 115,000 attempts to illegally cross the Anglo-French border from Calais, resulting in five recorded fatalities from crossing related incidents. The planned security enhancements will help to keep people safe and deter dangerous and illegal crossing attempts.

UK fencing manufacturer and security experts, Jacksons Fencing, has commented on how to approach border security to effectively mitigate risk and prevent any further tragic loss of life.

Jacksons has earned an enviable reputation over many years of manufacturing experience in the perimeter protection sector, developing products that have passed stringent testing by the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) and Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) which culminated in the winning of a government tender to supply and install an earlier upgrade of security fencing and access control systems at the Eurotunnel terminal in Calais in 2015.

The project was successfully completed in 2017, contributing to reducing fatalities which had amounted to 23 deaths in 2016.

Cris Francis, Jacksons’ Security Consultant comments:
“Busy crossing points such as the ferry port and Eurotunnel terminal at Calais need to be treated like any other high-risk commercial site. With the high volumes of vehicle traffic and heavy machinery operating within these areas, it’s important to reduce risk by eliminating unauthorised access, as the consequences could result in serious injury or death.

“Investing in threat-specific, certified and proven high security products is of critical importance in these scenarios and, at a minimum, we would advise installing products that have been certified to an LPS1175 Security Rating (SR) from the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB).

“Currently we are the only company able to offer LPS1175 certified fencing and gate systems from LPS1175 SR1 through to SR5 ratings and while our SR4 and SR5 rated products would be over-specified for the majority of the sites in and around the Calais terminals, they would certainly come into play in areas where surveillance coverage and manned response is difficult or where breach would lead to loss of life or cause catastrophic disruption to services.”

Jacksons Fencing designs and manufactures the highest quality perimeter security and access control solutions in the UK and its team of technical and engineering experts are readily available to provide support to the most complex and challenging perimeter security projects.

Astra Closers take starring role at Denham Studios

3000 series concealed door closers from Astra are playing a starring role in making fire doors safe yet stylish at a prestige residential development of an iconic former film studio.

Door manufacturer ABL Doors used Astra closers to help create sleek, elegant entrance doors for apartments at Denham Film Studios in Buckinghamshire.

Developers Weston Homes asked doorset manufacturer ABL to supply wide range of cutting edge door designs in the most modern finishes that would complement the development’s retro aesthetic, including 30-minute fire-rated doors for apartment entrances.

ABL’s MD Andy Williams said:
“It was incredibly important for us to achieve an effective balance of modern functionality and old-style glamour. The flat entrance doors needed to be Secured by Design accredited FD-30 fire doors that would function brilliantly yet look refined to suit their surroundings. We opted for CE-Marked Astra 3000 closers to avid the obtrusive institutional look of an overhead closer.”

In its 1940s and 50s heyday, Denham Studios was a thriving film production studio producing classic British films such as Brief Encounter and Great Expectations.

The site has now been lovingly developed to provide 224 conversion and new build homes, including 154 one, two and three-bedroom apartments and 70 four and five-bedroom family townhouses. Features within the new development include a cinema with bar and a community hall/fitness space.

The cinema – which was originally used to screen movies to Hollywood directors including Stanley Kubrick, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Steven Spielberg – has been refurbished and turned into a cinema theatre and club for residents, while the main Grade II listed building has been converted into 49 apartments.

In keeping with the high specification of the site, sleek aesthetics were a top priority for Weston Homes whose watchword for the development was luxury. This made concealed closers the obvious choice since they are not visible when the door is closed, avoiding the somewhat institutional and ungainly appearance of overhead closers.

ABL selected the Astra 3000 series closers because they had worked very successfully with Astra before and because, with full adjustability, they were powerful enough to handle the doors’ weight and width. Every apartment entrance door on the project features an Astra concealed closer.

The Astra 3000 series of fully-controlled concealed door closers are a range of groundbreaking products developed by Astra to offer all the adjustability and control of an overhead closer, even for fire doors. Unlike other concealed closers on the market, the CEMarked Astra 3000 series is fully controlled and adjustable, making it a truly viable alternative to overhead products at a sensible price.

Manufactured in the UK, in four different power sizes with adjustable closing speed and latching action for different size and weights of doors, they feature a unique hydraulic piston assembly designed in-house by Astra. This offers an adjustable, controlled rate of door closure together with a variable ‘snap action’ for overcoming the latch. The closers’ quality design and build makes it perfect for high traffic applications, both commercial and residential.

Astra is well known for its door closer range including the popular Gibraltar range. The Lancashire-based company can demonstrate many years’ experience in the sector and carries out all of its own R&D in-house. It exports its British door closers across the globe via a network of distributors and partner companies.
