From pioneering electric strikes to intelligent systems

For more than 90 years, ASSA ABLOY has pioneered electromechanical locking technology, continuously innovating since the first effeff electric strike was patented in 1932 and Abloy began developing high-security electric locks in 1978.

Today, electromechanical locks represent the intelligent evolution of mechanical security, combining trusted engineering with seamless digital connectivity for safer, smarter, more efficient building management.

Modern electromechanical devices transform the way buildings are secured. Their embedded intelligence enables reliable communication between door and system, remote operation, and data insights. They give facilities managers new levels of control and convenience without the need to be physically present at every opening.

“When ASSA ABLOY´s effeff brand patented their first electric strike in 1932, it set a new standard for intelligent building security,” explains Julian Riester, Director & Head of Product Unit eStrikes & egress at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA.

“Electromechanical locking and opening were born. Doors became electrically controlled and remote operation was a new reality. We have continued innovating and setting new standards for this technology ever since.”

Electric strikes are compact, reliable electromechanical devices that upgrade existing mechanical locks by enabling controlled, remote unlocking and seamless integration with intercoms, access control, and digital systems. They are mounted discreetly within the door frame for smarter, more flexible entry.

For installers, OEMs, and resellers, they offer easy integration, broad application versatility, certifications, and high customer demand, making them simple to specify, sell, and deploy across commercial and multi‑residential buildings.

Effeff electric strikes are engineered for universal fit and long‑term reliability, offering more than 10,000 strike and latch‑plate combinations as well as customized solutions for specialized environments.

They deliver trusted security through rigorous DIN‑certified and TÜV‑audited production, high holding forces, extensive cycle testing, and durable components designed for harsh or high‑frequency conditions.

A compact, installer‑friendly design enables fast, clean, cable‑free integration into almost any door, supported by adjustable alignment, sustainable EPD‑verified construction, and low power consumption for energy efficiency.

Extending the applications for electromechanical locking

E‑strike technology laid the foundation for modern electromechanical locking, which ASSA ABLOY’s ABLOY brand advanced in the late 1970s by embedding electricity and intelligence deep within the door leaf to enhance mechanical security and meet demanding regulatory and architectural requirements.

ABLOY Electric Locks are trusted worldwide for meeting the highest security and compliance standards. They deliver a premium door experience, even in demanding, high‑traffic, or high‑security environments. They integrate seamlessly with access control, alarm, and building‑management systems to make every door intelligent and controllable, enhancing functionality, efficiency, and real‑time awareness across complex security ecosystems.

“The long service life of our electric locks gives building managers the peace of mind that comes with products designed for maximum reliability,” adds Mika Savolainen, Director & Head of Product Line Management ELMECH PU at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA. “These locks are backed by ASSA ABLOY’s global network of experience and expertise. They have proven performance over decades in a whole range of access control environments.”

Designed with concealed installation, architectural flexibility, sustainability, and low energy consumption in mind, they provide a durable, future‑proof, and aesthetically pleasing solution in both new-builds and retrofits, including for emergency escape doors meeting EN179 and EN1125 standards.

ABLOY offers one of the widest electric‑lock ranges on the market. Their premium single‑ and multi-point solutions fit virtually any door, sector, or security requirement while ensuring seamless retrofit and design flexibility.

ASSA ABLOY’s range of eStrikes and electric locks are part of a wider portfolio of digital access solutions, bringing intelligent, secure, and seamlessly integrated electromechanical locking to virtually any building type, including multi‑residential, healthcare, offices, manufacturing, education, public institutions, and critical infrastructure.

EG Direct Introduces the Aqara Smart Lock Range to the UK Door and Gate Industry

EG Direct is pleased to introduce the growing Aqara Smart Lock range to the UK door, gate, lock and security industries.

As an official Aqara distributor in the UK, EG Direct is bringing a new generation of smart access control products to trade customers, offering flexible solutions for gates, glass doors, rim lock entrances and everyday domestic doors.

With customers increasingly looking for keyless access, app control, remote management and integration with wider smart home systems, smart locks are becoming a valuable opportunity for installers, locksmiths, gate automation specialists and security professionals.

The Aqara Smart Lock range includes the newly launched U500 Series, covering the Smart Gate Lock U500, Smart Glass Door Lock U500 and Smart Rim Lock U500, alongside the Smart Lock U200 Lite & U200+ Kit. The upcoming Smart Lock U600 is also expected to arrive in the UK later this year.

Built for Smarter, More Flexible Access

Aqara smart locks are designed to give users more ways to manage access without relying solely on traditional keys.

Depending on the model, unlocking options can include fingerprint, passcode, NFC, app control, Apple Home Key, mechanical key access and remote operation through compatible smart home systems.

For trade professionals, this provides a practical way to add value to existing door, gate and security projects. Whether the requirement is for a domestic front door, an external gate, a frameless glass office door or a traditional rim lock entrance, Aqara offers a smart lock solution for a wide range of applications.

Matter Support for Future-Ready Installations

A key advantage of the Aqara Smart Lock range is support for Matter, the smart home connectivity standard designed to improve compatibility across leading platforms.

With Matter support, Aqara smart locks can work with ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant and more, depending on the lock model and required compatible hub, Matter controller or Thread Border Router. This gives customers greater flexibility and helps installers offer a more future-ready access control solution that is not limited to one single platform.

Aqara U500 Series: Smart Access for Gates, Glass Doors and Rim Lock Entrances

The Aqara U500 Series has been developed to bring smart access control to a wider range of entry points, including external gates, frameless glass doors and traditional rim lock applications.

The range includes the Aqara Smart Gate Lock U500, Smart Glass Door Lock U500 and Smart Rim Lock U500. While each model is designed for a specific installation type, they share many of the same core benefits: keyless access, smart control, multiple unlocking methods and integration with compatible smart home systems.

The Smart Gate Lock U500 is particularly relevant for the gate and access control industry, bringing smart locking technology to external entrances that have traditionally relied on mechanical keys, keypads or separate access control systems. It supports dual-side access control, with fingerprint and key unlocking available from both sides, making it suitable for iron gates, grille-style gates and controlled entry points where secure access from both directions is required.

The Smart Glass Door Lock U500 is designed for frameless glass doors, making it ideal for offices, showrooms, studios, retail spaces and modern residential projects. Its clamp-on, drill-free design makes it a practical retrofit solution where customers want smart access control without replacing or damaging the existing glass door.

The Smart Rim Lock U500 is designed for classic entrances and surface-mounted lock applications. Unlike mortise-based solutions, it offers a front-and-back surface-mounted design, making it suitable for doors where a rim lock style installation is required.

Across the U500 Series, users can benefit from convenient unlocking methods such as fingerprint, NFC, app control, Apple Home Key and mechanical key access, depending on the model. For trade professionals, the range provides practical upgrade options across a variety of door and gate applications, helping customers modernise access without always needing major structural changes.

Aqara Smart Lock U200 Lite & U200+ Kit

The Aqara Smart Lock U200 Lite and U200+ Kit are designed for standard domestic doors and retrofit installations. Both options allow users to upgrade compatible existing locks without drilling, making them suitable for many residential projects.

The U200 Lite provides an accessible entry point into smart access control, offering app control, smart automation and keyless convenience.

The U200+ offers a more complete smart lock experience, with additional unlocking methods such as fingerprint, passcode, NFC and Apple Home Key support.

For installers, the U200 range is a practical solution for homeowners, landlords and property managers looking to modernise access without replacing the complete door system.

Coming Soon: Aqara Smart Lock U600

Later this year, Aqara is expected to bring the Smart Lock U600 to the UK market. This slim smart lock has been designed specifically with UK applications in mind and is expected to offer Apple Home Key support, allowing compatible users to unlock using an iPhone or Apple Watch. The lock is also expected to support Matter over Thread, helping it integrates with major smart home platforms.

Planned features include fingerprint unlocking, numeric password entry, NFC access, app control, auto-locking, emergency unlocking methods, USB-C emergency power and up to 10 months of battery life.

A New Opportunity for Installers

Smart locks are no longer just a consumer smart home accessory. They are becoming part of the wider access control conversation. For door, gate, lock and security professionals, the Aqara Smart Lock range offers a clear opportunity to add value to projects, provide modern access solutions and meet growing customer demand for connected security.

With Aqara’s wider ecosystem of doorbells, sensors, cameras, switches, screens and many other devices, installers can also create more complete smart entrance solutions for homes, offices, rental properties and light commercial environments.

As an official Aqara distributor in the UK, EG Direct can support trade customers with access to the Aqara Smart Lock range, helping installers bring smarter, more flexible access control to homes, businesses and entry points across the UK.

Growing Through Downturn - Leadership, Innovation and Opportunity in Challenging Markets

It is easy to be optimistic when markets are buoyant. Demand is strong, order books are healthy and growth can sometimes feel like it is happening naturally. The real test of leadership comes when economic conditions become more challenging. When investment decisions are delayed, projects are scrutinised more heavily and businesses across the supply chain face increasing pressure on costs, confidence and margins...

The entrance systems sector, like many parts of the construction industry, has experienced its share of challenges in recent years. Economic uncertainty, inflationary pressures, skills shortages and shifting regulatory requirements have all influenced the environment in which businesses operate.

Yet difficult markets should not simply be viewed as something to endure. They can also provide an opportunity to rethink, innovate and strengthen the foundations for future growth.

"The businesses that emerge strongest from challenging periods are often those that continue to invest, adapt and focus on delivering genuine value to customers," says Ken Price, Managing Director of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA). "Growth doesn't stop during difficult periods. It simply requires a different approach."

Looking Beyond Products to Solutions

One of the most significant shifts across many sectors is a move from selling individual products to delivering complete solutions.

Customers are increasingly looking for partners who can help solve problems rather than simply supply components. Whether that relates to accessibility, compliance, fire safety, security, energy efficiency or user experience, the conversation is often broader than a single product specification.

For manufacturers and suppliers, this presents an opportunity to review product portfolios and consider how products can be grouped and positioned around customer needs.

Product lifecycle management is not simply about introducing new products. It is about understanding which products provide added value, which have reached the end of their commercial lifecycle (technically, aesthetically or through lack of customer demand) and where investment should be focused to meet emerging market requirements.

Rationalising product ranges can improve efficiency, simplify customer choice and create clearer market propositions. At the same time, investment in innovation remains essential.

"The most successful innovations are often those that respond directly to identifiable challenges faced by customers, installers, building owners and end users," says Ken. "The businesses that maintain a clear understanding of customer needs are often the ones best positioned to identify opportunities, even during periods of economic uncertainty."

Innovation Born from Necessity

Some of the most significant innovations in entrance systems have emerged not during periods of prosperity, but during periods of challenge.

COVID-19 is an obvious example. Faced with unprecedented restrictions, the industry responded quickly and creatively. Existing technologies were adapted, new applications were developed and businesses found practical ways to help society reopen safely.

Functions around powered pedestrian doors became part of wider strategies to reduce touchpoints and improve hygiene. Entrance systems were incorporated into solutions designed to manage foot traffic, control occupancy levels and support social distancing requirements. Products were adapted and repositioned to solve new challenges almost overnight.

"What began as a response to an immediate crisis demonstrated something important about our sector. Innovation is often born from necessity. Businesses adapted incredibly quickly to help organisations manage access, control movement through buildings and create safer environments."

Many of those developments delivered benefits that extended far beyond the pandemic itself. It shone a light on the importance of regular maintenance, technical integration and smart building development.

"The lesson remains relevant," reflects Ken. "Challenging markets should not simply be viewed as obstacles to growth. They can also become catalysts for innovation, collaboration and change."

Culture Matters More Than Ever

While products and services are important, organisational culture often becomes the defining factor during difficult trading conditions.

When markets become more challenging, it is natural for businesses to focus heavily on financial performance and operational efficiency. These are clearly important considerations. However, organisations should be careful not to overlook the role people play in driving long-term success.

Motivated, engaged and empowered teams are more likely to identify opportunities, solve problems and deliver exceptional service.

Leadership during uncertain times requires visibility, communication and trust. People need to understand not only the challenges facing a business but also the strategy for navigating them.

The most resilient organisations are often those where employees understand how their individual contribution connects to wider business objectives, invests in supportive cultures including motivation and morale. This can help create ‘an employer brand’ which in itself can support recruitment.

This is particularly relevant in sectors such as entrance systems, where technical expertise, customer service and specialist knowledge remain critical differentiators.

"Investment in human resources, workplace culture and professional development should not be viewed as a luxury that can be postponed until conditions improve," reiterates Ken. "The skills developed during difficult periods often become the foundation for future growth."

Within ADSA, this commitment is reflected through training programmes, qualifications, apprenticeships and professional development initiatives designed to support competence across the sector.

"If we want to grow as an industry, we have to continue investing in people," he says. "Competence, professionalism and technical expertise will remain critical differentiators."

Can You Market Yourself Out of a Downturn?

Marketing alone cannot overcome fundamental business challenges. However, effective marketing can play a significant role in helping businesses maintain visibility, build confidence and position themselves for future opportunities.

One of the most common mistakes businesses make during difficult trading periods is reducing marketing activity at precisely the moment when it becomes most important.

When markets contract, competition for available opportunities inevitably increases. Customers become more selective and decision-making processes become longer and more complex.

Businesses that continue to communicate consistently, demonstrate expertise and remain visible often place themselves in a stronger position when investment decisions are eventually made.

There are encouraging signs that many organisations recognise this. Recent industry research suggests marketing investment is expected to increase despite ongoing economic uncertainty, reflecting a growing recognition that visibility and brand strength remain critical drivers of business growth.

"One of the biggest mistakes organisations can make is disappearing from view when conditions become more difficult. Visibility creates confidence. Confidence creates opportunity,” states Ken.

Marketing should not be viewed solely as promotion. It is about education, engagement and leadership. Technical content, thought leadership, case studies, training events, webinars and industry collaboration all help reinforce credibility and demonstrate value.

The question businesses should ask is whether they can afford not to market themselves while competitors remain visible.

The Role of Manufacturers in Driving Growth

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have a particularly important role to play in supporting growth across the entrance systems sector.

Manufacturers often sit at the centre of innovation, technical development and product advancement. Their investment decisions can have a significant influence on the wider market. However, their role extends far beyond simply bringing new products to market.

To drive sustainable growth, manufacturers need confidence in their product ranges and a clear understanding of where future opportunities lie. That requires continual assessment of product lifecycles, identifying where products continue to meet market needs, where ranges may need rationalising and where investment in new product development can deliver the greatest value.

"Product development should never happen in isolation," reflects Ken. The most successful manufacturers are constantly gathering intelligence from customers, installers, specifiers and the wider market. They are looking at what people want today, what they are likely to need tomorrow and where challenges are emerging.”

Understanding customer wants, needs and aspirations has become increasingly important as building requirements evolve. Issues such sustainability, for example, continue to shape purchasing decisions and specification requirements.

Manufacturers that actively monitor these trends are often better placed to anticipate demand rather than simply react to it.

"In many respects, this is where marketing becomes far more than a communications function. Good marketing is about insight. It's about understanding the market, identifying opportunities and using that intelligence to inform business decisions."

This intelligence can then be used to shape product strategies, guide investment decisions and support future innovation.

"The strongest businesses are constantly listening," he continues. "They are gathering feedback, analysing trends and using that information to evolve their offer. That might mean adapting existing products, developing entirely new solutions or grouping products differently to better address customer challenges."

This approach has become increasingly important as customers move away from purchasing individual products and towards seeking integrated solutions.

"Customers rarely wake up looking for a product," Ken adds. "They are looking for a solution to a problem. The manufacturers that understand those problems and design their offer around solving them are often the ones that create long-term growth."

Looking Ahead

Economic cycles are inevitable. Markets rise, markets fall and external factors will continue to influence the operating environment for every business. The challenge for leaders is not to predict every change but to build organisations that are resilient enough to adapt.

That resilience comes from maintaining a clear strategic focus, investing in people, understanding customer needs and continuing to innovate even when conditions are difficult.

For the entrance systems sector, there remains much to be positive about. The need for safe, accessible, secure and compliant entrance systems is not diminishing. If anything, the importance of these considerations continues to grow.

"The opportunity for all of us is to ensure we are ready to meet those needs, not only when conditions improve, but while the challenges remain," concludes Ken. "The businesses that achieve that balance will be the ones best positioned to lead the next phase of growth for our sector."

ADSA: Joint Competency Initiative Nears Completion

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has flagged that its partnership work to deliver a competency framework Initiative for the door, gate and shutter industry is nearing completion, following two years of intensive collaboration to define clear, role-specific competency pathways.

Final outputs are now undergoing industry consultation. This marks a significant step forward in establishing nationally recognised, structured competence frameworks across the construction industry, aligned with the requirements of the Building Safety Act and wider regulatory reform.

As part of the programme, ADSA has played a central role in the development of fire-rated and non-fire-rated installer competency frameworks for door, gate and shutter systems.

A key upshot has been the clear separation of these two product areas – recognition that fire-rated systems require additional, specialist knowledge and skills beyond those needed for standard installations. These include enhanced understanding of product performance, installation tolerances, compliance evidence and the implications of failure in life-safety scenarios.

This group has involved collaboration between ADSA, the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), supported by CITB, spurred on by a shared aim of raising competence, consistency and accountability throughout the supply chain.

It has undertaken a root and branch review of existing National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is now completing a new National Occupational Standard which will be a formal benchmark for training, assessment and qualification development across the sector.

Ken Price, Managing Director of ADSA, said: “This has been a substantial piece of work and one that the industry genuinely needs. Separating fire-rated and non-fire-rated competencies was essential – fire performance products demand a higher and more specific level of knowledge, and that must be clearly recognised.

“This will give employers, training providers and individuals a clear, structured route to understanding and demonstrating competence in line with modern regulatory expectations.”

The final frameworks and National Occupational Standards will support future qualification development, employer assurance and regulatory compliance, helping the sector respond to increasing scrutiny around competence and life safety.

ADSA will continue to support the rollout and implementation of the frameworks, ensuring members are fully informed and able to align their training and workforce development strategies accordingly.

The Next Generation of Industrial Door Control Panels by GfA

GfA has officially launched a new range of next-generation control panels, built specifically to deliver seamless, compliant, digital connectivity, with simplicity and consistency at its core. The launch represents a strategic technological advancement that addresses the demands of modern industrial environments while retaining the familiar operation that engineers already know and trust.

GfA boasts it has trained hundreds of engineers to use the TS range of control panels, and crucially the learning they have gained is transferable to this new range.

Seamless, Compliant, Digital Connectivity with the evodo Ecosystem

At the heart of the TS-C platform is smarter connectivity, enabled by GfA's new digital ecosystem, evodo. The platform integrates secure WLAN and Bluetooth® capabilities directly into the hardware, enabling seamless communication without interrupting door operation. This ecosystem connects building operators and door service companies through three key components:

● evodo-Sync: A dedicated application that enables wireless, on-site software updates, ensuring that controllers remain current with the latest enhancements.

● evodo-Toolkit: A mobile application that connects via Bluetooth to provide local parameter access, time and date configuration, and the ability to read and upload diagnostic information directly from the panel.

● evodo-Web: A web-based platform that allows for continuous remote monitoring of installed TS-C Control Panels, displaying asset data and diagnostic information based on whether the account belongs to a building operator or a door service company.

Built-In Compliance for the Future

With long-term system evolution in mind, the TS-C range has been engineered to provide the reliability and futureproofing required to maintain high standards of safety. Compliance has been built into the heart of the development process. Crucially, the TS-C platform is designed to meet the requirements of the new EU Machinery Regulation coming into effect in January 2027, which the UK is expected to align with. This ensures specifiers and end users are investing in a system that meets not just today’s regulations, but tomorrow’s as well.

Simplicity and Consistency for Engineers

Despite introducing an advanced digital architecture, the transition to TS-C is effortless. It retains the familiar functionality and user interface of legacy TS controls, allowing service teams to apply their existing knowledge immediately.

Hardware has been carefully redesigned to provide significant installation efficiencies. The TS-C features a compact, robust enclosure equipped with integrated snap-off mounting brackets for flexible placement. Inside, engineers will find lever terminals that minimise the risk of wiring errors and reduce installation time, along with a QR code that provides convenient access to installation instructions and fault guides.

Furthermore, troubleshooting has been vastly improved. The TS-C features a revised fault code structure (F.c codes) that clearly differentiates between faults, warnings, and status messages, resulting in faster fault identification and reduced downtime. To simplify stockholding, the control units also offer extensive I/O (input/output) configurability, allowing a single panel to support a wide range of door types and complex site requirements, from EV charging integration to interlocking systems.

A Clear Upgrade Path

The rollout of the new line-up began in May this year with the TS 96.25, which replaces the previous TS 981 model. Throughout 2026, GfA is introducing a total of five new panels, each serving as an enhanced replacement for an existing model to ensure a clear upgrade path: the TS 959 transitions to the TS 91.11, the TS 970 to the TS 92.12, and the TS 971 to the TS 93.13 & TS 93.25. Importantly, the replacement range also captures customer feedback in the design process, resulting in a range of panels that are aligned to the needs of our customers.

By combining fitter-friendly design, future-ready compliance, and an innovative digital ecosystem, the TS-C platform empowers engineers, service teams, and specifiers to work more efficiently today while seamlessly preparing for the future.

Solar Gates becomes SG in strategic evolution of the business

Solar Gates UK, the solar safety and security company serving construction, highways, and infrastructure sectors across the UK, has officially retired - making way for SG. The change is a natural reflection of how far the business has come.

Over 25 years, SG grew well beyond its origins - evolving from a solar gate specialist, then creators of the market-leading SOSEC and INSTABOOM solar barriers, into a company delivering a wide ranging portfolio of safety and infrastructure solutions. The name Solar Gates, while an important part of the company's story, no longer captures the full picture of what the business has become.

"Solar Gates built something real - a trusted team, strong relationships, and solutions that perform in some of the toughest environments in the industry. SG is the natural next step. Over 25 years, we grew far beyond what the original name suggested. This isn't a rebrand. It's the business finally introducing itself properly,” said Anna Blake, Commercial Director – SG.

At the heart of that introduction are four values SG has always lived by: innovative, passionate, capable, and compassionate. These aren't aspirations - they are commitments, visible in every project delivered, every partnership formed, and every client relationship maintained. The name changes. Nothing else does.

As SG grows, that commitment grows with it. The refreshed website reflects the same philosophy as the change itself: cleaner, clearer, and built to help specifiers, contractors, and procurement teams understand the full scope of what SG can offer.

"The challenges facing infrastructure and construction projects are becoming more complex - from safety and sustainability to technology and operational efficiency. SG has evolved to meet those demands,” added Anna.

“With a broader solutions offering together with Torquay Group companies, stronger partnerships, and a team focused on solving real problems for customers, this marks both where the business is today and where it's heading next."

A LETTER TO THE INDUSTRY FROM ANDY COLLETT, MANAGING DIRECTOR, GfA UK

The industrial door industry is entering a defining period of change. Across the UK and Europe, businesses are facing a growing shortage of skilled installation and service engineers. Experienced professionals are retiring, fewer apprentices are entering the trade, and companies are under increasing pressure to do more with less.

For manufacturers, installers and service providers alike, this presents a serious operational challenge. Margins are already under pressure. Time on-site is costly. Training new engineers takes time and investment. And as systems become more advanced, there is a growing risk that technology itself becomes viewed as another obstacle.

But this is precisely the moment when the industry must avoid paralysis through resistance.

The future of industrial doors will not be secured by avoiding change. It will be secured by helping engineers and businesses adapt to it confidently.

At GfA, this has long shaped our philosophy toward product development and training.

The Industry Cannot Afford Resistance to Innovation

There is often a natural hesitation whenever new control technology enters the market. Engineers who have spent years mastering familiar systems can understandably worry that “next-generation” products will mean complexity, disruption, or extensive retraining.

That concern is not unique to industrial doors. Every technical industry faces the same challenge: how to modernise without alienating the very people responsible for installation and service.

The danger comes when resistance slows progress.

Modern industrial doors are increasingly expected to deliver more than simply opening and closing reliably. Customers now expect smarter diagnostics, better compliance visibility, remote support capability, faster commissioning and more efficient maintenance processes. Regulations are evolving. Digitalisation is becoming unavoidable. Service expectations are rising.

If the industry resists these developments, the burden on already-stretched engineering teams only becomes greater.

Technology should reduce pressure on engineers — not create more of it.

That principle has guided the development of GfA’s new TS-C platform.

Familiarity Matters

One of the biggest mistakes manufacturers can make when introducing new systems is forcing installers and service engineers to completely relearn how they work.

That creates downtime, uncertainty and frustration.

The TS-C range was designed differently.

While the platform introduces major technological advancements, the operational logic remains intentionally familiar. Engineers already experienced with the TS Control Panel range will immediately recognise the structure, functionality and workflow of the new TS-C Control Panels.

This matters enormously in today’s labour environment.

Businesses do not have the luxury of removing engineers from site for lengthy retraining programmes. They need continuity. They need confidence. They need products that allow experienced engineers to transfer their existing knowledge directly into newer systems.

The TS-C platform delivers exactly that.

Instead of creating barriers to adoption, it creates a bridge between traditional engineering expertise and future-ready digital functionality.

Technology Should Support Engineers, not Replace Them

There is sometimes concern that increasing digitalisation removes control from engineers in the field. In reality, the opposite should be true.

Done properly, smarter systems empower engineers.

The introduction of GfA’s new digital ecosystem evodo, alongside the TS-C range, has been designed specifically to simplify commissioning, diagnostics and ongoing service support.

With tools such as:

● evodo-Sync for on-site software updates

● evodo-Toolkit for Bluetooth parameter access and diagnostics

● evodo-Web for remote monitoring and fault analysis

engineers can work more efficiently, identify issues earlier and reduce unnecessary return visits.

Importantly, these systems are designed to enhance field expertise — not replace it.

A skilled engineer remains central to the process. The technology simply removes inefficiencies that waste time and reduce profitability.

In a market suffering from labour shortages, this becomes critically important.

Faster Onboarding for the Next Generation

The industry also needs to think carefully about the next wave of engineers entering the sector.

If apprenticeship numbers remain lower than required, businesses must focus on reducing the time it takes for new engineers to become productive and confident on-site.

This is where intuitive product design becomes commercially valuable.

Features such as:

● integrated QR-code access to instructions and fault guides

● simplified wiring layouts

● lever terminals

● modular plug-and-play expansion

● USB-C parameter backup functionality

helps reduce avoidable installation errors and speed up familiarisation for newer engineers.

These are not simply “technical features.” They are tools that support workforce development.

The easier it is for engineers to commission, diagnose and maintain systems confidently, the stronger the industry becomes overall.

Compliance is Coming — the Industry Needs to be Ready

Another major driver of change is regulation.

The new EU Machinery Regulation coming into effect in January 2027 — with the UK expected to align closely — means businesses must prepare now for future compliance expectations.

This is not something the market can ignore or postpone.

The TS-C platform has been designed with future compliance already built in, helping manufacturers and installers protect both their stockholding and long-term product strategy.

Again, preparation matters.

Businesses that embrace change early will place themselves in a far stronger competitive position than those forced into rushed reactive transitions later.

Training Remains the Foundation

Technology alone is never the answer.

The real differentiator will always be people.

For many years, GfA has championed high standards of technical training because well-trained engineers do not just improve safety and quality — they improve profitability.

Confident engineers work more efficiently. They diagnose faults faster. They reduce costly callbacks. They strengthen customer relationships. And they help businesses protect margins in increasingly difficult trading conditions.

That philosophy continues with the rollout of the TS-C platform.

The objective is not simply to introduce a new control panel. It is to support the industry through a wider period of transition — giving businesses the confidence to modernise without fear of disruption.

A Moment for Leadership

The industrial door industry is undoubtedly facing challenges. Labour shortages, changing regulations and increasing technical expectations are real pressures for every business.

But periods of change also create opportunity.

Companies that invest in training, embrace smarter systems and support engineers through technological transition will be the businesses best positioned for long-term success.

The key is ensuring that innovation feels accessible — not intimidating.

That is why GfA’s message to the market is simple:

Change does not need to be disruptive.
Modernisation does not need to create barriers.
And engineers do not need to fear the future of control technology.

With the right support, training and product design, the industry can move forward confidently together.
