What is driving demand for modern front door designs?

Traditional composite doors continue to perform strongly, but homeowner tastes are evolving. Drew Pearson, sales director at Door-Stop explains why installers who understand the design trends shaping customer decisions will be better placed to offer advice and add value to every project.

A front door has always been one of the first things people notice about a house. Today it plays an even greater role in shaping first impressions and reflecting the overall character of a property.

Whether homeowners are renovating their entire property or simply looking to refresh their exterior doors, they are paying attention to how every element of their property works together. They are placing a greater emphasis on design and looking for products that reflect the style of their property

When choosing their front door, homeowners are now increasingly making style and colour decisions based on how it will look alongside other features in their home such as windows, brickwork, cladding, pathways and landscaping.

For installers, understanding these changing preferences is important. Offering a varied range that is supported by informed advice where needed, will help installers meet that demand.

Looking beyond the door itself

Homeowners are drawing inspiration from more places than ever before. Social media platforms, home improvement television programmes, design magazines, and property websites have made design ideas and trends more accessible. As a result, many homeowners are approaching front door replacement as part of a wider home improvement project, rather than just a like-for-like replacement.

These changing preferences are reflected across the wider construction products market. The recent Door and Window Fittings UK Market Report by Barbour ABI notes that today's mix of architectural styles requires products that are "adaptable and versatile". Homeowners are expecting more design choices that allow them to create an entrance which reflects the style and character of their property.

Traditional designs continue to have a strong place in the market, particularly for period properties, but demand for contemporary designs continues to grow as more homeowners look to create a clean, modern entrance that complements wider renovation and improvement projects.

What defines a modern front door?

Modern door designs utilise clean lines, flush finishes, symmetrical panel layouts, and ladder-style designs. These features all contribute to a simpler, more balanced appearance that suits both new build homes and modern renovation projects.

Glazing has followed the same direction. Rather than bold, decorative glazing patterns, many homeowners are choosing slim, geometric glazing that lets in natural light while maintaining privacy. This reflects the wider move towards minimalist design, with Barbour ABI’s report also noting that minimalist and slimline frames that maximise natural light continue to be in demand.

The same trend can be seen in colour choices too. Traditional favourites such as red, blue and green remain popular, but anthracite grey, black and Chartwell Green are increasingly being selected to match windows or provide a contrast to render and modern brickwork.

From fitting doors to giving advice

For installers, these conversations often extend beyond simply replacing a front door. Homeowners are looking for advice on styles, materials and glazing options that complement the property while meeting their practical requirements.

Manufacturers are responding with broader ranges of modern styles and configurable options. Door-Stop’s new Modern Collection is one example, bringing together eight contemporary door designs with a choice of glazing and hardware options, allowing installers to tailor each entrance to the property rather than steer homeowners towards a limited set of standard options.

The collection reflects the more contemporary designs many homeowners are looking for. Exclusive to the Modern Collection, the Modern 4 Square with Tahoe glazing and the Modern Mid Square with Aurora glass designs address the growing demand for doors that meet multiple homeowner needs.

Small details, lasting impressions

One of the biggest opportunities lies in helping customers appreciate how small design choices influence the finished result.

Door furniture has become more than a functional necessity. As Barbour ABI’s report shows, hardware has evolved into "a major design feature", making the finishing touches just as important as the door itself.

The growing choice of contemporary long bar, square, and bow handle, alongside more traditional handle styles, gives installers more flexibility when helping homeowners achieve the look they want. Matching the style of the hardware to the character of the property helps create a more cohesive appearance, while the choice of finish can complement other exterior features such as lighting.

While appearance is important, homeowners also expect secure and durable hardware, with high security products also being a key driver shaping today's market. For installers, that means specifying doors that combine contemporary styling with robust construction and high-quality hardware.

The opportunity for installers

Design trends will continue to evolve, just as they always have. Contemporary styles may be growing in popularity today, but homeowner expectations will continue to change as architecture, technology and lifestyles develop.

The installers best placed to meet changing homeowner expectations will be those who understand the trends shaping purchasing decisions, ask the right questions and recommend products that suit both the property and the customer's priorities.

Door-Stop's Modern Collection has been developed to reflect many of the design trends highlighted in this article, offering installers a wide choice of contemporary styles, colours, glazing options and hardware.

Inspiring future female talent

Endurance® Doors has demonstrated its commitment to nurturing future talent by supporting the WiME Raising Aspirations Programme in partnership with Women into Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME) and The Vale Academy.

The initiative is designed to encourage more young women to consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), showcase the breadth of opportunities available within modern manufacturing and engineering, and provide practical insight into modern industry, helping to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world careers. Confidence building is another key aim of the programme.

The programme reflects Endurance® Doors' wider focus on investing in local communities, developing the workforce of tomorrow and helping to promote greater diversity across the manufacturing sector.

Students were inspired by female industry professionals, including Endurance® team members, Emma Sloan and Jessie Meakin who led a series of workshops designed to help participants identify their strengths, develop confidence and think about their future ambitions.

Other speakers included Sarah Cook from Wood and Lisa Carter from Munich Re who shared their own career journeys and experiences and highlighted the value of determination, resilience and self-belief.

The second phase of the programme included a visit to the Endurance® Doors manufacturing facility where students were given a guided tour of the extrusion department by Ryan Clarkson.

The visit offered valuable first-hand insight into a modern manufacturing environment, allowing students to observe production processes, ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse range of roles available across the sector, including engineering, manufacturing, operations, quality, logistics and business functions.

Russell Hensman, Brand Engagement Manager at Endurance® Doors, said: “As one of the UK's leading composite door manufacturers, we are passionate about supporting the next generation and helping young people understand the exciting opportunities available within modern manufacturing and engineering. Programmes such as WiME play a vital role in raising aspirations, building confidence and challenging perceptions about careers in STEM and we are proud to champion and be a part of the initiative.”

“It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and engagement from the students throughout the programme. By opening our doors and sharing real-world experiences, we hope we have helped inspire some of the future talent that our industry will rely on for years to come.”

Manufacturing and engineering continue to face a significant gender imbalance, with women remaining underrepresented across many technical and leadership roles. First Impressions Start with the Finish

Kerb appeal is no longer created by the door alone. As homeowners become increasingly design-conscious, the hardware that completes an entrance has become an important part of the overall specification.

Handles, letterplates, numerals, knockers and accessories are no longer viewed simply as functional components. They are finishing details that help define the character of a property, creating a first impression that reflects the quality and style of the installation.

For fabricators and installers, this shift presents an opportunity. Rather than treating hardware as the final selection before installation, bringing the conversation forward can help customers create a more considered and complete entrance.

Coordinated door furniture has become an important expectation of a quality installation. Matching finishes create a sense of order and attention to detail, avoiding a mismatched appearance and helping deliver the premium look homeowners increasingly expect.

From function to design feature

The role of residential hardware has evolved significantly. While performance, durability and security remain essential, customers are increasingly looking for products that complement the wider design of their home.

The move towards coordinated hardware reflects a wider trend for complete entrance solutions. Rather than choosing individual components separately, homeowners increasingly want their door furniture to work together, with consistent finishes across handles, letterplates, numerals and accessories.

For HOPPE (UK), this changing expectation has shaped the development of the ARRONE range, providing fabricators and installers with a complete selection of complementary hardware designed to combine visual appeal with reliable performance.

The range includes door handles, pull handles, knockers, numerals, security letterplates and window handles, allowing fabricators to create a consistent look across the complete installation.

 The substance behind the style

While appearance is increasingly important, hardware specification is about much more than aesthetics. Door furniture is one of the most frequently used elements of an entrance, meaning long-term reliability, durability and performance are essential.

The ARRONE range has been designed to meet these demands, combining a choice of finishes with products developed for everyday residential applications.

The AR7550 longplate lever handle sets provide a versatile solution for PVC and composite doors, featuring an integrated spring cassette, colour-matched fixings and a 10.7mm backplate depth designed to accommodate a range of cylinder options. The handle sets have been durability tested to 200,000 cycles and corrosion salt spray tested to Grade 5-480 hours, supporting both reliable operation and long-lasting appearance.

The ARRONE range also extends across window applications, helping fabricators maintain a coordinated appearance throughout the property. The AR720 inline and AR722 cranked espagnolette window handles have been designed specifically for the demands of today’s volume window market, available in finishes including polished brass, polished chrome, anthracite grey, jet black, traffic white, satin chrome, silver enamel and graphite.

Both models feature a positive stop at closed and 90-degree positions and are supplied with the necessary fixings for straightforward installation. With a standard 7mm spindle and multiple spindle length options available, they provide flexibility across a range of side-hung window applications.

Security is also a key consideration. The ARRONE AR708HS TS 008 tested letterplate combines enhanced protection with a clean, coordinated appearance, allowing fabricators to support modern security expectations while maintaining the overall aesthetic of the installation.

Together, these products allow fabricators to specify a complete hardware solution where every detail has been considered.

Delivering PAS 24 Compliance with UAP Hardware: TS008 Letterplates, Fullex Locks and Beyond

In today’s construction landscape, compliance with PAS 24 is no longer optional; it is essential. Developed as a benchmark for enhanced security performance, PAS 24 provides a rigorous testing method to ensure that doorsets can withstand opportunistic and forced-entry attempts commonly encountered in the UK.

However, one of the most important, and often misunderstood, aspects of PAS 24 is that it tests the entire doorset as a complete system, not just individual components. This means that every element, from the locking mechanism to the letterplate, plays a critical role in achieving compliance. UAP’s integrated approach to hardware specification addresses this challenge, ensuring that all components work together seamlessly to meet and exceed PAS 24 requirements.

Understanding PAS 24

PAS 24 has been developed to assess how doors and windows resist attack methods typically used by opportunistic intruders. These attacks are often low-skill but highly effective if weak points exist within the doorset.

Unlike component-level standards, PAS 24 evaluates the combined performance of hardware, glazing, locks, and accessories. A failure in any one component, no matter how small, can result in the entire doorset failing the test. This approach makes hardware selection critical. Manufacturers and specifiers must ensure that every piece of hardware is not only individually robust but also compatible within a tested configuration.

Adam Dixon, Senior Technical Manager, added, “PAS 24 assesses the performance of the entire doorset under simulated attack conditions, so every component must function as part of a cohesive system. Multipoint locks, cylinders and letterplates all need to maintain structural integrity and resist manipulation without creating weak points. Our approach is to engineer hardware that works together to deliver consistent, repeatable performance in PAS 24 testing.”

The Role of Multipoint Locks in PAS 24 Testing

At the core of any secure doorset is the locking system. Fullex’s multipoint locks are engineered to deliver exceptional performance across multiple attack points.

Multipoint locks distribute the locking force across several positions along the door frame, significantly increasing resistance against forced entry. Features such as opposing hooks, anti-lift bolts, and reinforced keeps provide enhanced security, helping doorsets withstand the physical attack elements of PAS 24 testing.

Crucially, these locks are designed for both durability and security. PAS 24 testing includes repeated mechanical operations and attack simulations, meaning locks must maintain performance throughout these tests. Fullex locks are built with long-term reliability in mind, ensuring consistent operation even under demanding test conditions.

Freezeguard 3 Star Cylinder: Performance in All Conditions

Alongside the locking system, the cylinder plays a critical role in both security and operational reliability. UAP’s Freezeguard 3 Star cylinder is designed to perform in challenging environmental conditions, helping to ensure that doorsets remain functional even in extreme cold.

As part of a PAS 24-compliant doorset, consistent cylinder performance is essential not only to resist attack but also to maintain usability during testing and in real-world applications. By combining enhanced security credentials with durability and resilience, the Freezeguard cylinder supports the overall integrity of the door system, ensuring that environmental factors do not compromise compliance or performance.

TS008 Letterplates: A Critical Security Component

While often overlooked, letterplates are a common vulnerability in residential doors. PAS 24 testing specifically evaluates whether intruders can exploit openings, such as letter plates, to gain access.

UAP’s TS008 Soterian letterplates are designed to mitigate this risk. TS008 certification refers to enhanced security standards developed to resist manipulation techniques such as fishing and tool-based attacks through the letterplate aperture.

When incorporated into PAS 24-compliant doorsets, TS008 letterplates provide resistance against intrusion attempts through the door aperture, robust construction to withstand physical attack, compatibility with fire-rated and security-rated door systems.

UAP’s range includes TS008 fire-rated letterplates, ensuring that both security and fire performance requirements can be met in a single solution.

Because PAS 24 assesses the full doorset, the inclusion of a compliant letterplate is essential. Even the strongest lock can be undermined by a weak or poorly specified auxiliary component.

Supporting Hardware: The Complete Security Ecosystem

Beyond locks and letterplates, PAS 24 compliance depends on a complete ecosystem of hardware. UAP offers a comprehensive portfolio of complementary products including: high-security escutcheons, door handles engineered for durability, cylinders and masterkey systems, door viewers, and door chains.

Each of these elements contributes to the doorset’s overall performance. For example, security escutcheons protect cylinders from attack, while reinforced handles prevent forced entry attempts from compromising access points.

Importantly, many UAP products are also accredited by recognised schemes such as Secured by Design and BSI Kitemark, providing additional assurance of quality and performance.

Achieving First-Time PAS 24 Success

One of the biggest challenges for door manufacturers is achieving PAS 24 compliance on the first test attempt. Failure can result in high costs, delays, and reputational impact.

UAP addresses this by taking a customer-led approach, working with manufacturers to specify complete hardware packages that have already undergone extensive testing and validation.

By combining proven components, such as multipoint locks, TS008 letterplates, Freezeguard cylinders, and compatible accessories, UAP reduces the risk of failure and helps streamline the path to certification.

Integrated Security You Can Trust

PAS 24 compliance is about more than meeting a standard; it’s about delivering real-world security performance. Because the standard evaluates the doorset as a whole, every component must work together flawlessly.

UAP’s range of TS008 letterplates, multipoint locks, Freezeguard 3 Star cylinders, and supporting hardware is designed with this principle at its core. By offering a fully integrated solution, UAP enables door manufacturers to achieve compliance efficiently, confidently, and cost-effectively.

In an environment where security expectations continue to rise, choosing the right hardware partner is essential. With UAP, every component contributes to a stronger, more resilient doorset, ready to meet the demands of PAS 24 testing and beyond.

Zoo Hardware Launches New RT070 Idro Lever

Zoo Hardware has launched the RT070 Idro lever, its latest addition to the premium Rosso Tecnica range of architectural hardware.

A modern interpretation of the ever-popular RT060 Orta lever, the RT070 Idro introduces a precisely machined linear knurled pattern on the grip. This delivers a more subtle and refined decorative aesthetic compared to the Orta’s more industrial diamond knurling. The linear detailing perfectly complements the clean, minimal lines of the modern T-bar silhouette, resulting in a sleek and contemporary design.

Available in seven colours; powder coated black or white, PVD satin brass, bronze or black, antique brass, and satin stainless steel, the Idro levers will instantly elevate any space with a smart and stylish aesthetic.

Made with SS304 cast stainless steel rose, the lever has a 4-point fixing into rose and screw on rose cover to elevate its look. It comes supplied with bolt-through and wood screw fixings and an improved allen key for improved installation. It is suitable for 35-54mm doors in both domestic and commercial applications.

In addition to looking the part, the Idro lever provides peace of mind with its BS EN 1906 Grade 3 rating, performing robustly in high-traffic settings. It is also BS EN 1634-1 30/60 rated to ensure it works reliably in the event of a fire.

Andy Hullock, Product Support Manager at Zoo Hardware, said: “Our new RT070 Idro lever reflects the continued evolution of the Rosso Tecnica range, combining refined aesthetics with high-performance engineering.

“We’ve taken the strong foundations of the RT060 Orta and introduced a more precisely machined knurled detail to create a cleaner, more contemporary look, without compromising on durability.

“With a wide choice of premium finishes and robust certifications including BS EN 1906 Grade 3 and 30/60-minute fire rating, the Idro lever is designed to meet the demands of both commercial and residential environments while delivering a truly elevated design statement.”

‘Forever home’ renovations drive demand for premium aluminium

Economic uncertainty has changed the way many homeowners now approach major spending decisions. Rather than upsizing or relocating, increasing numbers are choosing to improve the homes they already have, investing in spaces designed to meet their long-term needs and lifestyles.

While the ‘move or improve’ debate is nothing new, the concept of the ‘forever home’ is becoming increasingly influential with homeowners placing greater emphasis on quality, durability and timeless design choices that will continue to add value and enjoyment for years to come.

For the fenestration sector, this shift is creating a growing demand for premium products and materials, particularly aluminium systems, as consumers look beyond short-term costs and focus more heavily on long-term performance and aesthetics.

As Scott Foster, group marketing director at Endurance® Aluminium explains, homeowners are becoming far more considered in their purchasing decisions as they pursue the perfect ‘forever home’...

“People are thinking much more carefully about where they invest their money. For many homeowners, moving house is either financially unattractive or simply not the right solution anymore, so instead they’re investing in improving the property they already love.

“When customers take that long-term approach, priorities naturally begin to shift. Rather than looking purely at the upfront costs, they start focusing on quality, durability, appearance and how products will perform over many years. These days, creating a space that is ‘Instagrammable’ is increasingly becoming part of the checklist too.”

This changing mindset is particularly evident in the growing popularity of aluminium glazing systems. Once viewed primarily as a commercial product, aluminium has become increasingly desirable to homeowners thanks to its slim sightlines, contemporary appearance and long-term resilience.

Modern homeowners are also increasingly design conscious with glazing playing a major role in the overall look and feel of a property. Large expanses of glass, minimal frames and clean architectural lines continue to grow in popularity across renovation and extension projects, particularly as homeowners seek to create brighter, light living spaces.

“Where once windows and doors were seen as functional, they are now a key part of the overall aesthetic vision for many homeowners. Aluminium is increasingly viewed as a premium solution because it delivers on both performance and aesthetics, offering strength, durability and low maintenance alongside the sleek, modern appearance many customers are looking for,” Scott continues.

“Homeowners want products that look exceptional but also stand the test of time, and aluminium gives them that combination.”

Energy efficiency also remains a major driver behind renovation activity, particularly as homeowners continue to face rising energy costs and increasing awareness around sustainability. Premium glazing systems can play a significant role in improving energy efficiency and comfort, making them an increasingly important part of renovation plans.

Importantly, the shift towards premium home improvement products is also creating new opportunities for installers.

As consumers become more willing to invest in quality, conversations are moving away from purely price-led selling and towards long-term value. Installers who can confidently demonstrate the benefits of premium systems, including durability, aesthetics, efficiency and lifecycle performance, are often better positioned to secure higher value projects.

“The most successful installers are increasingly those who can sell on value rather than simply competing on price,” says Scott. “Homeowners undertaking major renovations are typically making emotional as well as financial investments into their homes, so they want reassurance they’re choosing products that genuinely deliver.

“That creates significant opportunities for installers who understand premium products and can clearly communicate the long-term benefits to customers.”

The trend also reflects wider changes within the home improvement market, where consumer expectations continue to evolve. Homeowners now carry out extensive online research before making purchasing decisions and are increasingly influenced by quality, reputation and overall customer experience rather than headline pricing alone.

For manufacturers and installers alike, this means premium positioning, product quality and service standards are becoming increasingly important competitive differentiators.

While economic uncertainty may have slowed some areas of discretionary spending, the ‘forever home’ trend demonstrates that homeowners are still prepared to invest when they see genuine long-term value. For the glazing industry, and particularly for premium aluminium systems, that shift is helping to reshape both consumer expectations and future market opportunities.

ORION ICE Keeping Criminals in the Cold

VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson
tells us about the company’s product of the moment – the ORION ICE® 3 star profile cylinder...

VBH (GB) has a long history throughout our 44 years of trading of providing the market with a line of top quality profile cylinders. They have all been immensely popular, and the latest in that line, ORION ICE by greenteQ, is proving to be no exception.

ORION ICE is fully tested and accredited to the latest revision to the TS007 Kitemark, TS007-1:2024, and is recognised by Secured by Design as a Police Preferred Specification.

It is rated as a 3 star cylinder, offering full protection against thermal (freeze) attack, glue attack, snapping, bumping, drilling and picking without the need of supplementary hardware.

The name ICE not only reflects the freeze attack element of the 2024 revision’s test criteria, but is also an acronym for In Case of Emergency, signalling the cylinder’s protective credentials. ORION ICE really does keep criminals out in the cold!

ORION ICE builds on the success of the original greenteQ Orion cylinder, which has proven to be immensely popular with fabricators, installers, locksmiths and, of course, the general public since its own launch in 2020.

VBH offers the proteQ10 guarantee on the snap element of ORION ICE. The guarantee promises to pay £5000 in compensation direct to the homeowner in the event that a break in proves successful as a direct of the ORION ICE profile cylinder being snapped from outside when it is fitted within a closed and locked door.

Moving away from the security and safety aspects of ORION ICE, each cylinder is supplied with five keys as standard, which is very well received by homeowners as it reduces their need to cut additional keys.

ORION ICE is available in nickel and brass finishes, in key/key, thumbturn and keyed alike variants. The thumbturn features a push button that will override the interlock that is activated when the cylinder is snapped at its sacrificial break point.

The interlock protects the cylinder against manipulation and further damage from outside. By pushing the button, inhabitants inside the building are able to exit safely in the event of an emergency. ORION ICE is both secure and safe. The same result is achieved on a standard key/key cylinder by simply turning the internal key through 360°.

ORION ICE is the latest addition to VBH’s schedule of SBD approved hardware, joining products such as the greenteQ Alpha door handle, greenteQ Velocity door hinge and a wide choice of door locks from respected manufacturers including Avantis and Yale.

The schedule also features a wide range of hardware for windows and sliding doors from brands including greenteQ, AGB, Roto, Yale, Securistyle and Avantis. Specifiers, fabricators and installers have a full basket of SBD approved products at their fingertips when they source their hardware from VBH.

Further information on ORION ICE, Velocity or any other product can be found at www.vbhgb.com or by emailing info@vbhgb.com

Staff Cooke, Technical Director at ASSA ABLOY, comments: “We’re thrilled to be opening our expanded Test Centre, now with UKAS accreditation to give our customers absolute assurance that our testing meets strict, nationally recognised standards. Hörmann Truedor Roadshows Showcase Installer Growth Opportunities

Hörmann Truedor has successfully completed a series of roadshows across the UK, designed to demonstrate how entrance door installers can unlock new business growth through its composite door offering and comprehensive dealer support package.

Held as informal early morning events, the roadshows brought together installers over coffee and breakfast to explore opportunities to expand their product portfolios. The Hörmann Truedor team were on hand to outline how the range of UK-manufactured composite doors, backed by Hörmann’s engineering expertise, strong brand reputation and nationwide infrastructure, can provide a high-quality, consumer-focused addition to existing offerings.

A key highlight of the events was the introduction of Hörmann’s latest consumer marketing initiative, Hörmann Street. This targeted social media campaign, inspired by popular UK soap operas, features a fictional street and a cast of recurring characters navigating everyday drama, relationships and suspense. Each episode subtly integrates the features and benefits of Hörmann Truedor composite doors, aiming to drive traffic to the company’s website and generate genuine homeowner enquiries.

Attendees were given an exclusive preview of the campaign, which received an overwhelmingly positive response. Installers praised both the creativity and execution, recognising its potential to engage homeowners and support lead generation.

Hörmann confirmed that all enquiries generated through the campaign will be directed to approved dealers via its new online Installer Finder, offering installers a clear commercial advantage. To help maximise conversion rates, the company has also implemented a suite of practical sales tools and support, including an advanced online Door Designer, product training, marketing resources and ongoing technical assistance.

In addition to the long-term growth potential, installers attending the roadshows were offered a range of launch incentives, including a £1,500 door voucher package, a 750-point sign-up bonus for the Hörmann Rewards programme and free access to the Door Designer for the first year.

Overall, the roadshows provided installers with a concise and engaging introduction to partnering with Hörmann Truedor, highlighting how the company can help drive demand, attract new customers and increase profitability within the composite door sector.
