UK’s security industry throws its weight behind automated gate safety campaign

Influential organisations within the security sector are continuing to join the growing campaign to improve the safety of automated gates.

Secured by Design, the flagship UK police crime prevention initiative and the European Fencing Industry Association (EFIA), which promotes safety within the fencing industry, are the latest to support Gate Safety Week (www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk October 13 - 19).

The Master Locksmiths Association has already joined the Gate Safety Week campaign which is committed to raising public awareness of the dangers posed by poorly installed and maintained powered gates.

Gate Safety Week is being organised by the Door & Hardware Federation Powered Gate Group which comprises Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment.

Neil Sampson, chairman of the DHF Powered Gate Group, said:
“We’re delighted the security sector has put its weight behind our campaign. They are joining a large number of influential organisations in the safety, enforcement, inspection and education sectors that are determined to help us promote this vitally important powered gate safety message.
“Gate Safety Week is all about making as many people as possible aware of the dangers posed by a poorly installed or maintained powered gate.
“We estimate that more than two thirds of all automated gates in the UK fail to meet current safety standards and could be potentially unsafe. In recent years three children and three adults have been killed in gate accidents. As an industry we are determined to minimise the risk of further tragic accidents happening.”

What the security professionals are saying:
“Secured by Design and the DHF have a long history of working together. As well as needing to be secure, it is vital that gates are regularly inspected and maintained so that they perform properly and at the same time are safe to those using them. Gate Safety Week is a great way of raising awareness in this area.” - Mick Reynolds, senior development officer at the Association of Chief Police Officers Secured by Design.
“EFIA actively works to raise standards of safety, quality and professionalism within the fencing industry, and therefore wholeheartedly supports DHF’s Gate Safety Week and its significant efforts to date in developing professional standards for powered gate installers and suppliers.” - Bernard J KilBride, general secretary of European Fencing Industry Association.

The DHF Powered Gate Group was set up with the encouragement of the Health & Safety Executive following fatal accidents involving unsafe gates. Its Gate Safety Week campaign is raising awareness of the potential dangers that powered gates pose and advising that existing powered gates should be checked for safety and legal compliance. It is also stressing that correctly installed and properly maintained gates are perfectly safe to use.

There is comprehensive guidance for security professionals, other professionals and the general public on the website www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk . This includes a guide to safety legislation and a detailed rundown of the safety features to look for on a powered gate.the safety features to look for on a powered gate.

German engineering and British know-how - a winning combination for Teckentrup

2014 has been a very successful year in the UK for Teckentrup Gmbh the German manufacturer of domestic garage doors, steel doors sets and commercial doors. This will culminate in the announcement of the forming of Teckentrup Ltd in association with its UK distributor Signature Doors Ltd.
“This is an obvious and logical step for both businesses,” said Jim Rodger, managing director of the new business. “Not only is it logical but it’s great news for all of our customers as it reaffirms the brand’s commitment to the UK and gives the market some real choice!

“Now, both our garage doors and commercial doors will be marketed under the Teckentrup name. We confidently expect that commercial door sales will grow swiftly and eventually form the major part of our business - as is the case already in the German market."

He said Teckentrup's complete commitment to certification will be the catalyst behind their sales growth in the UK steel hinged doorset sector.

“The company completely supports and is driven by the introduction of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) that was introduced on July 1, 2013 with regards to external doors and EN14351-1. We believe third party testing and declaration of performance not only delivers business benefit, but also raises standards across the industry.

“It delivers a level playing field upon which specifiers of external doors can evaluate the quality and characteristics of products to ensure they will deliver the required performance. This is even more vital when the harmonised standard for fire resistance performance characteristics EN16034-1 comes into play during 2015.

“It is hugely important that installers of these types of product not only believe - but can prove that - they are fitting compliant product. Teckentrup products are exactly what they need, in terms of quality, consistency and conformity.

“One of the reasons why membership of the Door & Hardware Federation is so important to us is that the federation has long been promoting the need for both performance declaration and certification to both specifiers and legislators.”

For more information about Teckentrup’s wide range of steel doorsets, visit www.teckentrup.co.uk .

It has been announced that Teckentrup is to be a Gold Sponsor of the DHF Gala Dinner Dance being held in October at the Carden Park Hotel in Cheshire.

Meeting the challenges of the leisure sector

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s extensive leisure sector experience and expertise ensures it is able to deliver performance doorset solutions that meet the specific needs of each project.

The company’s Plasform range is particularly popular with leisure sector clients because it has been developed to meet the hygiene, safety and operational demands of environments such as swimming pools, sports halls, gyms and spas.

The PVC encapsulation of the Plasform door provides protection against the daily challenges of leisure environments, in which fixtures are exposed to humidity, water and chlorine based disinfectants. Rounded postformed edges and the lack of visible lippings minimise the build-up of airborne particles, allowing easy cleaning and offering increased impact resistance.

The range includes Plasform WR which has fully sealed cores and glazing systems that offer enhanced water resistance making it ideal for swimming pool applications.  For even higher performance, Plasform Extended Performance provides all the benefits of the Plasform range with up to 90 minutes fire resistance and 38RwdB acoustic performance.

Group Marketing Manager, Shafiq Sharif said:

“We’ve worked with the leisure sector for a long time and understand the demands it places on doorsets. The Plasform range has been developed to cope with the severe duty use and hygiene requirements of such environments. Our expert staff work with specifiers to identify the best solutions for each situation, which we then manufacture in a quality-controlled factory and supply fully-formed to provide guaranteed certified performance once on site.”

A wide choice of facings and finishes also leaves scope for innovative design and enhanced performance. Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s Envision facing, for example, enables the intricate detail of high definition, photographic images to be incorporated into a factory assembled doorset. The image or design is digitally reverse painted and encapsulated behind 2mm of material, providing protection against wear.

Meanwhile its Hygieniform Eco door facing offers environmentally-friendly PVC-free protection against the spread of infection, which is a key concern in warm, damp environments. The anti-bacterial additive Hygienilac is integrated throughout the material thickness, continuing to combat infections even if the material is scratched.  Hygienilac kills 99.9% of bacteria including MRSA, Listeria, Clostridium Difficile and Salmonella, and has passed BS 6250 tests for severe usage. Its active ingredient has approvals from the Food and Drug Administration, Health & Safety Executive and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw recently supplied Plasform performance doorsets to Ockenden Manor Spa in Cuckfield, West Sussex. Plasform was chosen because of its high performance in humid environments and finished with Hygienilac. Furthermore Envision door facings were used to display images of the surrounding forest.

General Manager Adam Smith said:
“One of the key attractions here is the beautiful countryside that surrounds us. Being able to bring that environment into the building in such a creative and contemporary way is really effective.”

As well as licensing its approved company locksmiths to ensure they’ve been vetted, are regularly inspected and have met minimum competence requirements, the MLA promotes locksmiths’ standards of conduct and practice. It is the latest in a number of influential groups in the security, enforcement, inspection, education and safety sectors who are lending their support to Gate Safety Week - October 13 - 19 www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk .

It is being organised by the Powered Gate Group of the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) which comprises Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment.

Said Steffan George, the MLA’s director of business development:
“The MLA has always worked closely with the DHF and we’re delighted to promote this important message of automated gate security. With locksmiths doing more and more in the realms of general security, and a number getting involved in installing powered gates, we’re keen to promote the message of ensuring all gates are safe and therefore happy to back Gate Safety Week.”
The Gate Safety Week campaign is raising awareness of the dangers that powered gates pose and advising that existing powered gates should be checked for safety and legal compliance. It is also stressing that properly installed and maintained gates are perfectly safe to use. There is comprehensive guidance for security professionals, other professionals and the general public on the website www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk This includes a guide to safety legislation and a detailed run down of the safety features to look for on a powered gate.

Fire and Smoke Protection - A Complete Solution from Aluprof

Aluminium remains the most widely specified material for commercial windows, doors and curtain wall, so it should come as no surprise that leading European systems company, Aluprof, offer a comprehensive range of fire rated systems.

Aluprof have designed each of their fire rated products to perfectly complement their standard systems. So for any part of any screen, window, door or curtain wall aluminium framing can be fire rated and can still retain the slim sight lines of standard systems. Some solutions are unique to the industry and available only from Aluprof such as the fire rated, silicon joint curtain wall system MB SR50NEI Efekt tested to EI60 class.

The company’s new brochure entitled, 'Fire Rated and Smoke Exhaust Systems', explains in detail each product and rating. Aluprof systems offer some of the highest fire protection ratings in Europe, some reaching EI120 - that's two hours fire and smoke protection. Each system has been tested according to UK industry standards with various specialist glasses and all are fully covered by the UK's 'Certifire' certificate of approval.

Frames are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies across the UK. Aluminium frames using a combination of machined plasterboard slips, ceramic cores, stainless steel clips and intumescent strips, ratings can be adjusted to suit any application.

Smart new door closer is clever innovation.

The new Agrippa wire-free, intelligent, digital fire door closer
launched by fire technology specialists Geofire.

A new wire-free, digital fire door closer that uses unique, smart technology to ‘learn’ the sound of a specific fire alarm has been launched by fire technology specialists Geofire.

Easily retrofitted to any door, this intelligent wire-free closer learns the sound of your specific fire alarm, releasing the door in the event of a fire. The closer is swing-free too, making the door responsively light to handle, and the simple answer to legally holding open fire doors to ease access.

The advanced digital technology that’s behind Geofire’s new Agrippa wire-free fire door closer uniquely ‘listens and learns’ the sound of a specific fire alarm. This ensures the closer’s releasing trigger reacts only to the precise sound of the fire alarm rather than extraneous loud noises, so false activations are virtually eliminated.

The Agrippa’s closing speed is adjustable, with a holding angle of 65-105 degrees, and it can be programmed for daily release. It requires only two C cell batteries (which last for 12 months). The closer is approved to EN1155, EN1154 and CE Marked, with additional features that include a seven segment LED display, manual release button and a low battery warning display.

The reaction from Installers, Specifiers and End Users has been very enthusiastic, seeing the Agrippa door closer as an exceptional product that combines innovation, functionality and good looks.

The Agrippa door closer is being successfully specified in a range of key sectors that includes care homes, schools, hospitals and hotels, where it is essential to have doors in an open position at certain times of the day to aid access, but equally as important to ensure the doors are closed in the event of a fire.

This advanced closer is part of the Agrippa Acoustic Products Range that includes an acoustically triggered fire door holder. UK manufacturer Geofire specialises in the manufacture of a wide range of electromagnetic door holders and other activation devices used widely as part of fire, security or ventilation systems.

For more information on the new Agrippa wire-free, intelligent, digital fire door closer from Geofire please email enquiries@geofire.co.uk or visit  the Geofire website at www.geofire.co.uk

To have your story published - just send us your news item, logo and image(s) and we will review the material, make any necessary changes to the wording / wordcount and then advise you when it will be published.

If you take display advertising or product and literature features in our printed and online publications, you will qualify for regular free postings on this blog while you continue to advertise with us.

For details on features and advertising rates please contact us or visit our website.
