New Ford Mustang Causes Internet Stampede in Europe as Half a Million Configure Iconic Car in First Month

It was a web stampede a half century in the making. Potential customers flooded Ford websites to design, specify and price nearly 500,000 new Ford Mustang models in the first month Mustang was available to order across Europe.

During the first week, more Mustang models were specified online than any other Ford vehicle. Ford Mustang websites, enabling customers to build and price a Mustang to a chosen specification attracted more than 1.1 million visits from mid-January to mid-February.

Data for that period indicated that the new Mustang equipped with the 314PS 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine accounted for half of all configurations. The other half were specified with the 418PS 5.0-litre V8 engine.
“The rush to configure Mustang online represents 50 years of pent up demand across Europe,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “For some people, the new Mustang is the car they have waited for their whole lives.”

Confirming European tastes for sports cars with accessible performance, the most popular specification overall was the EcoBoost-equipped model with six-speed manual transmission, chosen for 37 per cent of models configured. Manual transmissions overall accounted for two-thirds of models specified.

Of the five largest European sales markets – UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain – the powerful 5.0-litre V8 engine was most popular in the UK (54 per cent) and Germany (60 per cent). The EcoBoost engine was most popular in Italy (61 per cent), Spain (59 per cent) and France (55 per cent).

The top colours were Race Red and black, each accounting for 20 per cent. In the biggest five sales markets, the most popular colours were:

•    U.K. –  Race Red (22%) and Deep Impact Blue (17%)
•    France – Race Red (24%) and black (19%)
•    Germany – black (21%) and Race Red (18%)
•    Italy – black (27%) and Race Red/Deep Impact Blue (13%)
•    Spain – black (27%) and Race Red (19%)

In China, where more than five million consumers have visited the Ford site to learn more about Mustang, Race Red is the leader, accounting for more than a third of Mustang orders. In the U.S., black is the number one colour.

The Ebony leather interior finish was chosen by 61 per cent across Europe, and 28 per cent of those who configured models online also chose to specify the Custom Pack, which includes:

•    “Shaker Pro” premium audio system with navigation
•    Climate controlled seats, reverse parking sensors
•    Lustre Nickel multi-spoke 19in alloy wheels
•    Side window chrome surrounds on the fastback model

Engineered to deliver world-class performance, driving dynamics and usability, the new Ford Mustang is available in 10 exterior colours, equipped with standard with 19in wheels, a performance brake package, automatic Xenon headlamps, LED tail lamps, and a rear diffuser. Further standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, nine-speaker sound system, and SYNC 2 voice control connectivity with eight-inch colour touch screen.

The Ford Mustang is exclusively available to order in Europe at new FordStore locations  opening across the region primarily in metropolitan areas. Never before has Mustang gone on sale worldwide and the new Mustang will be available to customers in more than 100 markets. First shipments are headed for Asia, with vehicles arriving in continental Europe mid-year and in the U.K. with right-hand drive in the second half of the year.

Ford made the first 500 Ford Mustangs for Europe available to reserve during the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final. More than 9,300 people registered online for a chance to reserve one of the models during the match, the first 500 registrations placed in just 30 seconds.

Ten Ways Mums’ Lives Have Transformed in 50 Years

With Mothers Day coming around again this Sunday, we couldn't resist publishing this brilliantly written and researched article produced by International courier ParcelHero who have taken a look at how Mum would have spent her day back in 1965.

1 - Washing nappies
Terry cloth nappies, fastened with large safety pins, were by far the main type of nappy in 1965; leaving Mum the gory task of scrubbing and washing baby’s best efforts in her Rolls Razor Twin Tub. By the end of the 1960s Pampers disposables had become hugely popular – one of the fastest switches in consumer buying patterns ever. We wonder why?

2 - Slaving over a stove
With no ready-meals or microwaves, Mum spent much of her time cooking. Meat and veg was the staple meal, with take-away fish n’ chips a weekly treat. ‘Instant’ food was limited to Spam and other tinned items. Mum didn’t launch into spaghetti bolognaise or prawn cocktails until the 1970s.

3 - Shopping, shopping, shopping
Much of Mum’s time was spent shopping. In 1963 only 3% of UK homes had freezers. She probably visited the corner shop and the grocer daily; and the local butcher, the fishmonger and baker more than once a week.  There were only 572 supermarkets in the UK in 1961. By 1969 there were 3,400 including Gateway, Fine Fare, Tesco and Sainsbury. Thrifty Mum was careful to collect her Green Shield Stamps.

4 - NOT going to work…
Most women either chose to give up work or were ‘let go’ when pregnant! In 1960 only 35% of married women worked at all, and most chose to give up work when they had babies. It was still legal to sack someone who was pregnant until 1975. Only 17 percent of mums who worked during pregnancy in 1961 went back to work before their children were five, compared to 65 percent of women today.

5 - Leaving kids in front of the TV – but only for 15 minutes!
There was no all-day TV and no DVDs, so Mum looked forward to 1.30pm when, despite its name, she could leave the kids to view Watch with Mother on their own while she enjoyed a rare break. Andy Pandy and The Flower Pot Men were great for keeping toddlers entertained. For older kids Doctor Who was already a Saturday favourite and Thunderbirds proved to be a F.A.B. hit from lift-off in 1965.

6 - Not doing much for Mother’s Day!
Poor Mum wasn’t likely to receive a Mother’s Day gift from her grown-up kids. There were no courier services to pick up the parcel from the senders’ door, no choice but Royal Mail’s prices, and definitely no Sunday delivery! Few families ever went out to a restaurant or drank wine, so no big celebrations. It wasn’t until the arrival of Bernie Inns and Mateus Rose, Black Tower and Blue Nun in the 1970s that eating out and enjoying a glass or two became popular.

7 - Wearing a wedding ring
It may be thought of as the permissive swinging ‘60s, but only 5.8% of babies were born to unmarried mums in 1961; today 44% of mums have not tied the knot.

8 - Pushing a heavy pram Heavy metal Pedigree prams were still most popular for babies, their basic design hadn’t changed much since the Edwardian era. They needed a hefty push to climb kerbs, and forget getting them on a bus – especially as lowfloor buses weren’t introduced until the 1990s.

9 - Having a cigarette
Half of all women smoked in the 1960s, compared to 1 in 5 today. It wasn’t until 1964 that the first major report into smoking health issues appeared. Women continued to smoke during pregnancy and, if they were anaemic, doctors would also often prescribe them free Guinness on the NHS!

10 - Collapsing in front of Corrie!
Busy Mum picked up her kids from school in her shiny new Mini, Ford Anglia, Fiat 500 or Beetle, helped with homework, fed them Birds-Eye Fish Fingers, kept them amused with Thomas the Tank Engine, Barbie and Batman toys, before she finally collapsed in front of Coronation Street, complaining Dad didn’t help out much. How times have changed… Or maybe not!

David Jinks, ParcelHero’s Head of Public Relations, says:
‘Mums certainly had it tough 50 years ago, and, despite modern conveniences, it’s still massively hard work for today’s mothers, and they are probably holding down a career too!

‘Mum deserves a treat so, rather than sending parcels, we’re sending one lucky mother and her guest on a pampering £400 spa visit. She can choose from a wealth of luxurious Wahanda spa venues, with indulgent treatments, breakfast, bubbles and dinner.’
David explains:

Entering our #senditwithlove Mother’s Day competition is simple. Just visit the ParcelHero Facebook page and tell us why your mum deserves her spa break.

- What’s the most wonderful thing she has done for you?

- In what way is she the Queen of Mums?

We’d love to hear.

New Manufacturing Process Offers Speed and Energy Efficiency

Security Doors, a division of ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door opening solutions, has made significant investment in a new manufacturing process that will decrease lead times for customers, have positive impact on the environment and further improve product quality.

Using the auto-feed and seamless punching and folding capabilities of the Salvagnini CNC equipment, combined with a fast, heat cured bonding system, ensures improved precision and accuracy, reduces manual handling of products and improves the throughput time of products.

The improved process is being used at the Lisburn facility for the production of existing products, but the full impact of the investment will be seen through the launch of a new door design that incorporates a full interlocking seam on all sides of the leaf. The new door platform reduces the manufacturing time and improves the aesthetic qualities of the door leaf; by removing unsightly spot-weld marks. The new design also eliminates processes such as welding and grinding, significantly improving the environmental impact.

Seamlessly linking all parts of the CNC production process with the design software ensures consistent accuracy, speed of production and ease of replication should replacements be required in the future. With a unique serial number assigned to each door, customers have the opportunity to simply quote the number and an exact replica of the existing door can be produced through the line.

Doorframes are supplied as knock down structures, that are easier to pack and to move around site, reducing the possibility of the damage. The structures can be compacted for transportation; therefore less packaging is needed, lowering the environmental impact of products. The ready-to-assemble design, also takes up less space in pallets on lorries, further lowering of the carbon footprint of the product.

The knockdown frame format also enables better utilisation of space on the automated powder coating line, reducing powder paint consumption and improving energy efficiency.

Neil Chambers, Production Manager at Security Doors, said:
“Each stage of our new manufacturing process requires little or no manual handling compared to the old production line. As a result of this, we have greatly improved the speed that we can manufacture products such as our knock down frames and new glazing design, as well as the quality.
“ASSA ABLOY is running a Group Sustainability Program until 2015, aiming to reduce energy consumption intensity by 15% and carbon emissions by 10%. The introduction of our new manufacturing process is a great example of how sustainability is embedded in the manufacturing and logistic elements of our value chain.”
Security Doors is a division of ASSA ABLOY UK, the global leader in door opening solutions.
Security Doors comprises Powershield steel doors, and Safeguard high security timber doors, providing a single point of contact for well-known high performance security door brands.

Yale Door and Window Solutions is encouraging its fabricator and installer partners to ‘Yale it’ in 2015.

This is the theme of a new Yale consumer marketing campaign, which will run across both print and online, along with videos and social media, generating greater consumer awareness of home security.

With the recovery of the consumer economy in UK, the prospects for the replacement door and windows market are looking brighter and so Yale Door and Window Solutions is using this opportunity to link in with the consumer campaign more closely, to help increase sales for its partners in the retail door and window installation market.

Kevin Hill, Managing Director of Yale Door and Window Solutions, comments:

“Yale has always been known as the most trusted name in home security, but we recognise that now is the time to really harness the power of the brand by putting together a true retail focused campaign that will benefit our customers.

“We are working tirelessly to highlight the importance of home security to UK house owners, creating 1.7billion opportunities to see the Yale brand through marketing activities in 2014.

“We are now looking to build on this platform with the new ‘Yale it’ campaign, which works seamlessly across all sectors of the industry, and reinforce the power of the Yale brand to our fabricator and installer partners.”

Vufold unveils new wider-glass bi-fold door range

The new three door sets of the wider Vufold Ultra range

Vufold, the leading British manufacturer of bifold sliding doors is transforming its Ultra range by increasing the glass size in all of its large size sets; and it predicts they will be a massive hit with homeowners across the UK.

The company has taken its 10ft to 16ft versions of the Ultra range and effectively taken a full door out to create more spacious looking sets with no impact on door stability and security. This means that the 10ft set can now be supplied with three instead of four doors, the 12ft has four instead of five while the 14ft and 16ft sets reduce from six doors to five. All of the sets will be available in the original configuration while stocks last apart from the 16ft set will be available in both.

The new range additions will be in stock at the company’s warehouse from the beginning of April 2015 and available for free delivery within 7-14 days

Kerry Murphy-Kaytan, Marketing Manager for Vufold said:
“Our Ultra range door sets are completely unique and have proven very popular with customers. They are stylish and low maintenance which means they look good for a long time with little or no additional effort needed by the home owners. What we have done with the new sets is to substantially increase the glass area so that views out into the garden and beyond are better than ever – something we know our customers appreciate. We are very confident the new Ultra sets will be a big hit this coming summer.”
The Ultra range is weather resilient with aluminium cladding on the outside which maintains the external looks while the ultra-fashionable oak on the inside can be made to match interior flooring, doors and furnishings. The sets are available in white or grey powder-coated aluminium outside and natural clear oak inside; all sets are triple glazed as standard to provide extra insulation and heat retention.

The sets come in a comprehensive range of widths from six foot (1790mm) with three doors to 16 foot (4790mm) with six or five doors; all sets are universal in height. Prices range from £2,699.00 to £5,599.00#

Vufold has been manufacturing and supplying bi-fold, sliding doors and room dividers since 2006. The company is based in Macclesfield where it stores manufactured units that are made abroad under precise construction instructions.

Center Parcs Coup for Carl F Groupco

A prestigious contract awarded to West Port Windows and Doors Ltd - manufacturers of high performance, bespoke timber windows and doors, has resulted in one of Carl F Groupco’s largest orders for fittings.

Carl F Groupco is preferred window hardware supplier for a West Port contract supplying Center Parcs’ new 362 acre woodland Woburn Forest site in Bedfordshire: the facility features 625 lodges, a 75 bedroom hotel and six Spa Suites for overnight spa stays.

West Port was awarded the contract to supply 4,000 timber windows and 2,000 timber doors, including sliding patio doors with electronic locks to maximise natural light and provide outdoor access. Fittings provided by Carl F Groupco for West Port’s “System X” window included Peder Nielsen Side Swing gearing, the MACO RAILespagnolette and MK 1 shootbolt locking systems and Hoppe Tokyo espag handles.

As part of Carl F Groupco’s service that supported West Port’s delivery on time and to specification, the hardware supplier provided a solution for fire escape windows by specifying the Trojan Mega Egress hinge with 90º opening: this allowed West Port to supply windows on time and to specification.

Commenting, Sean Parnaby, West Port’s Managing Director said:
“The contract is an excellent example of Carl F Groupco’s ‘one stop’ service, partnership approach to hardware supply and ability to provide high volume orders to meet exacting lead times. The company’s contribution included working with West Port over a 13 month period developing specifications for all window systems fitted on site. The resulting data sheets, which are designed to ensure consistency and accuracy of orders, are used by West Port’s factory and purchasing staff, as well as Carl F Groupco’s sales teams.”
In line with West Port’s stringent criteria to control impact on the environment, all Carl F Groupco hardware is supplied using a Kanban system: this provides West Port with a customised, returnable packaging design to reduce carbon footprint and comply with the company’s environmental policy.

115-Year-Old Benz Ideal Offered at Bonhams Mercedes-Benz Sale

A rare, fully restored, 115-year-old Benz Ideal is the oldest motor car offered at Bonhams single-marque Mercedes-Benz Sale. The annual auction takes place 28 March in Stuttgart, Germany, and will feature more than 40 lots of collectors’ motor cars.

The Benz Ideal was an early development of the original, groundbreaking combustion-engined motor car, the Vélocipede (commonly known as the Velo). The impressively restored Ideal featured in Bonhams sale dates back to 1900. Its estimate is €230,000-280,000 (£170,000-200,000).

Introduced in 1898, the Ideal was designed to compete with models produced by the growing number of manufacturers in the turn-of-the-century car market. It offered a steel chassis and a respectable 4½ horsepower (1899-1901) single cylinder engine.

It is believed to have been sold new in the U.K. through British Benz Agents, Hewetson’s Ltd. and still wears its brass supplier’s plaque confirming this.

From its very earliest days the car was registered in Shropshire, UK, and it was in this area of the British Isles that it was found in the 1950s. Its discoverers, Ralph Wilde and Jack Moor, subsequently restored the car and it remained in Moor’s family for more than 50 years before coming into the present ownership.

Philip Kantor, Bonhams Head of European Motorcars, said:
“A regular entrant and successful finisher on the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, this definitive Patent Motorwagen is now 115 years old and going strong – a testament to the strong foundations of Mercedes-Benz engineering.”

Bonhams Mercedes-Benz Sale will take place at 14:30 on 28 March in the Mercedes-Benz Museum, Stuttgart, Germany. The Mercedes-Benz Museum charts the entire history of the world’s oldest car manufacturer, with a total of 1,500 unique exhibits featured in the museum.

DHF Powered Gate Group expands its online safety guidance

The Door & Hardware Federation Powered Gate Group has confirmed its position as the UK’s leading authority on powered gate safety following its publication of more safety guides.

The guides give comprehensive guidance across a broad range of powered gate safety issues. They can be downloaded by both DHF members and non members at www.dhfonline.org.uk.

They are the latest additions to the large online library of advisory documents which include the DHF Guide to Gate Safety Legislation & Standards.

The online resource is for the benefit of all those involved in the installation, inspection and maintenance of powered gates and all those responsible for the safety of gates, including owners and facilities managers.

The DHF Powered Gate Group produced the guides following a number of inspections of unsafe gate installations carried out by the federation’s inspectors.

Nick Perkins, DHF training officer said:
“The publication of these latest guides is part of our continuing drive to raise standards of safety in the industry.”

“There have been a number of incidents involving powered gates reported to us and our own inspectors have carried out many checks on non compliant gates. As a result we’ve significantly expanded our online library of advisory documents to cover the problems we have encountered.

“This expansion of our onlilne library, and the continuing success of our training course for installers and inspectors, underpins our commitment to significantly raising levels of powered gate safety in the UK.”
The guides detail the safety hazards found during inspection and give comprehensive advice on how the hazards can be controlled. Topics covered in the guides include telescopic sliding gate safety, care in the use of safety circuits and how sliding gate rolling gear and swing gate ram mounting geometry impacts on safety. There is also a detailed guidance document for domestic, commercial and industrial owners of powered gate systems.

New appointments to deliver AluK’s ambitious sales strategy

Graham Hurrell, Commercial Director.

Capitalising on its continued business expansion, leading aluminium systems manufacturer, AluK (GB) has made a number of new senior appointments to bolster its growing sales team and support its new sales structure. The three new appointments will oversee the delivery of a new sales strategy as the company seeks to achieve further growth and prominence in the aluminium building systems sector.

Heading up the new senior sales and marketing team is Graham Hurrell (pictured above), who joins as Commercial Director. He will build on AluK’s impressive growth with the implementation of an ambitious new sales growth strategy which will see the sales team split into two specialist functions; specification sales to the construction industry and account sales to fabrication companies.

This new structure identifies the skills required on each team, ensuring the delivery of a unique sales approach that differentiates AluK from other manufacturers. The strategy is designed to further establish AluK as the industry leader amongst both direct and indirect customers in both product offer and customer service by supporting the sales and marketing management teams with new tools, processes and initiatives.

Graham has worked in the fenestration industry for 30 years with the past 16 years spent at a leading international aluminium systems house in the UK, Asia and Australia. His extensive experience covers the specification sales process, sales team development, CRM implementation, marketing and communications.

Graham Roche, National Architectural Manager

Covering the UK, his role will see him lead a team of Architectural Project Managers to build and promote AluK’s new and updated product offer and extensive accreditation, establishing them as highly respected and recognised leaders in the industry. Graham will be responsible for the integration of his team’s activities into the overall AluK (GB) business.

Having worked in the commercial glazing industry for nearly 30 years, Graham first joined AluK as the Specification Manager (North), where he further enhanced his experience working alongside architects, specifiers, commercial fabricators and installers on a wide range of projects.

Julie Hanson, National Sales Manager
Heading up the account sales team will be Julie Hanson, as National Sales Manager (pictured left). She will manage a team of Area Sales Managers to support and develop existing accounts and to open up new areas of opportunity in line with the sales growth strategy In addition, Julie and her team will work closely with the specification team to develop further opportunities for the business.

Julie has worked in customer service and customer facing roles over the past 20 years, with her previous role spent at a multi-national glass company as National Sales Manager for 4 years. At this company she was directly responsible for a team of Regional Sales Managers, covering the UK and Ireland.

Graham Hurrell, Commercial Director, AluK said:
“This is a really exciting time for AluK as it seeks to be the most successful aluminium building systems manufacturer in the UK. Working to a new sales growth strategy and a strong senior sales team with the additions of Julie and Graham, we are very well placed to continue our business expansion. We have bolstered our team even further with two fantastic new Sales Managers who will lead our new specification and account sales divisions to meet and exceed their targets.”
