Assa Abloy Security Doors Continue to Secure Work in The London Underground

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, a division of ASSA ABLOY UK, the global leader in door opening solutions, is continuing to help upgrade London Underground Stations with the installation of its specialist steel doorsets.

The London Underground has 1.265 billion passengers per year and has been an iconic part of the capital for over 150 years. ASSA ABLOY Security Doors has recently supplied its doorsets to various tube stations, including Bond Street, Canary Wharf, Kings Cross, Westminster and Waterloo, as part of a regeneration and maintenance programme.

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors’ high specification doorsets, which comprise high performance steel doors, London Underground approved ironmongery and hold a 60 minute fire rating audited by Exova Warringtonfire under the Certifire Compliance scheme were supplied to the projects. In addition, some steel doors using electro-magnetic hold open devices were fitted to help with high traffic on fire escape routes.

Chris Cole, Area Sales Manager for ASSA ABLOY Security Doors commented:
‘’We are very pleased to be associated with a number of projects currently taking place within London Underground.“Due to the nature of the London Underground project, internal steel fire doors are an essential safety feature within busy public developments. Compared to alternative materials, steel doors can provide a higher level of fire protection, helping to prevent the spread of fire and maximise evacuation time.

“Additionally, steel doors demonstrate superior strength and durability, combined with relatively low maintenance requirements making them an ideal choice for high traffic areas.”

Loopless Loop Detector for Automated Gates and Barriers

The Dynamite VD909 mini-loop from Diablo by Forematic - The loop detector without a loop’, this 6” long yellow stick replaces exit loops.

Huw Jones, Managing Director of the UK Distributors, Diablo Controls explains:

“Ever since the electric carving knife in the 1980’s, technophiles have been fitting electric motors to everything from tin openers to pencil sharpeners.

“It seems everything these days has a digital display. My daughter is experimenting with a sous vide machine, a sort of modern slow cooker with a digital display. Meat comes out of the machine tender and succulent because, the brochure promises, the digital display controls the cooking conditions. This machine is another kitchen device that will deliver quality grub, until we run out of kitchen work surface again.

“Now, I’m not against progress, but I like to see technology that delivers a benefit, so I was interested to hear from an American Company claiming to have a unique solution to a messy job”.

“In short, it’s an exit device that is placed in the road or driveway, to trigger a barrier or gate to open. It is not a safety device. That would be the Holy Grail, but as a replacement to standard loops (for free exit only) it saves hours of installation time”.

“We believe Dynamite to be unique. This is not an aspirational boast – it really is the only device of its type (that we are aware of) in the world”.

Billed as ‘The loop detector without a loop’, this 6” long yellow stick replaces exit loops. The device uses conventional loop detector technology, so it is resilient to vibration or large off-road metal objects. The detector module is small and well packaged, promising compatibility with any control panel, and without a digital display.

A video can be found on the company’s website www.diablocontrols.co.uk .

The manufacturers claim that the value in terms of time saving and reliability is confirmed by the 5000 units sold in USA this year.

For installers though, we imagine that having his lunch free from concrete dust might be a good enough reason to fit a Dynamite!

New Customer Contact Centre Launch For Dorma UK

On the 9th July 2015, Thomas Wagner, CEO of the DORMA Group officially opened the new DORMA Customer Contact Centre in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The centre will play a fundamental role in the Service business moving forward – providing the highest levels of customer support to help maintain access all around the building.

The new DORMA Customer Contact Centre is one of many investments the company has made in its door service and maintenance business since its acquisition of Ascot Doors in 2013 - which allowed DORMA to expand its industrial door support and increase its national reach through regional branches to provide local support and knowledge, plus faster response times.

Since the acquisition, the integration process has led to the evolution of DORMA’s customer servicing offering to help customers maintain access all around their building and the new centre is integral to this. A dedicated freephone number directs customers to this single point of contact for all service calls, whatever the door type, including 24 hour emergency response, planned maintenance, contract administration and billing services.

A new telephone system and ServiceMAX field management software allows the centre team to quickly connect customer and engineer, responding to requirements efficiently for all door types. With 10 regional branches, calls to the centre are logged and sent to the relevant branch for action.

Craig Gilmour, Regional Director, at DORMA UK & Ireland commented:
“When it comes to customer service – our aim is to exceed all expectations. The DORMA business is absolutely committed to innovation and reliability and we take pride in offering a single source for all door service requirements. Our new contact centre will play a vital role in the trusted, added value support we provide.”

Manual Sliding Wall system from GEZE UK

GEZE has enhanced its Manual Sliding Wall (MSW) system eradicating the need for a swing door end panel so all the leaves can be hidden from sight when not in use.

The company has developed SmartGuide technology, which allows the leaves to glide easily around corners and be stored away, making it ideal for creating large open entrances or for spaces that need temporarily dividing.

MSW offers a solution that’s both aesthetic and functional and is designed for use in high traffic, public locations such as retail environments, airports, offices, conference rooms, hotels and restaurants.

It is modular in design, giving architects the flexibility to tailor the design to the environment. Walls are lockable when closed, giving utmost security and can be fully or partially opened as required ensuring ease of access for all.

GEZE’s Manual Sliding Wall (MSW) system features SmartGuide
technology which eradicates the need for a swing door end panel
so all the leaves can glide around corners for storage.

The SmartGuide carriage features enhanced rollers and guiding, which allows individual sections to be moved with the minimum of effort. The switching guide side on the carriage means that a swing door end panel is not required because all the leaves can be moved and stored within the stacking area.

A choice of three profile designs is available to complement the decor. Classicline profiles fit directly on to the glass at a slight angle and have a profile height of only 107 mm; Pureline profiles can easily be combined with existing systems and have a modern, angled design; while Protectline provides increased protection against glass damage such as that caused by cleaning machines.

The covers are designed to be clipped in place after the leaves have been installed meaning no drilling is required. They are available in a variety of finishes and colour schemes to reflect the interior design.

Alternatively if an all-glass solution is required, MSW can be combined with GEZE’s integrated all-glass system (IGG).

The beauty of IGG is that it invisibly integrates the profiles and fitting system between the panes of glass.

The inside of the pane is printed at the edge of the glass so that the fitting technology is hidden and there are no visible or bulky parts on the glass surface.

Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK explained that MSW can be used to create a sweeping and inviting entrance. He said:

“Thanks to the SmartGuide technology, MSW can be opened up completely to create an expansive open entrance or partially opened to create a flexible space. Alternatively, MSW can be installed internally to create an attractive partition wall to temporarily separate different areas.

“For entrances, leaves usually feature glass to allow a clear line of site, while internal partitions can be screen printed to reflect the interior design or an organisation’s corporate identity.”

For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic and manual door closers call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk .

Bentley that took Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg on Drug Fuelled Marrakech Trip to be sold by Bonhams at Goodwood Revival Sale

Keith Richards and Bentley, 'Blue Lena'

In the swinging sixties, each member of the Rolling Stones had his own statement vehicle – a car that announced the arrival of a rock star. For Keith Richards, this car was a beautiful blue Bentley S3 Continental ‘Flying Spur’, a car that he affectionately named ‘Blue Lena’ after legendary jazz musician, Lena Horne.

In 1965, Richards purchased the car new from London dealer H.R. Owen, and later had it modified with a secret compartment in which he and the band could conceal their much loved, and highly illegal, narcotics. In the heady days of the Rolling Stones’ early fame, the car not only transported the band to various parties and gigs, but also took them on some astonishing adventures around Europe, and most famously, North Africa.

“It was a car meant to be driven fast at night,” Richards said, in his 2010 autobiography, Life. “My dark blue Bentley, my S3 Continental Flying Spur – an automobile of some rarity, one of a limited edition of 87. Having this car was already heading for trouble, breaking the rules of the establishment, driving a car I was definitely not born in to. ‘Blue Lena’ had carried us on many an acid-fuelled journey.”

In 1967, police raided Keith Richards’s country home, Redlands, an estate in West Wittering, Sussex, just a stone’s throw away from Goodwood where Blue Lena will now be sold. As the police arrived the band were in the middle of one of their famously hedonistic parties, and were found high on various illegal substances. Notoriously, Marianne Faithfull, Mick Jagger’s then girlfriend, was found lying on a sofa, wearing nothing but a fur rug, prompting the infamous newspaper headline: ‘Nude Girl at Stones Party’.

Richards was charged with possession of illegal substances. In the run up to his court date, and no doubt to escape the media buzz, he and the band decided to go on an overseas adventure, to a place where drugs were, at the time, more freely available – Marrakech.

Whilst Jagger and Marianne Faithfull flew in, Richards and Brian Jones decided to go with Blue Lena, along with model Anita Pallenberg, Jones’ girlfriend at the time, and friend Deborah Dixon.

Early on in the 1,800mile journey Jones, his tempestuous relationship with Pallenberg at breaking point, was struck down with pneumonia and hospitalised in Albi, France.  Dixon was the next to go – in Barcelona – leaving Richards and Pallenberg alone in Blue Lena marking the beginning of a relationship which only ended, three children and 23 years later, in 1980.

James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director, said:

“Richards sold Blue Lena in 1978, and it has since changed hands just three times. Following a five-year restoration, Blue Lena has been returned to its former glory, and will be offered at Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale – very near to the scene of that famous 1967 raid – at estimate £400,000-600,000.”
Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale takes place on the 12th of September in Chichester, West Sussex.

Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) recruits a fire safety lifer

Kevin Hulin, a fire safety specialist who has been involved in the industry throughout his career, has been appointed as the new manager of the UK’s Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS). He replaces Neil Ashdown who is still involved with the scheme in an ambassadorial role.

Kevin takes the helm at a pivotal time. The demand for FDIS certificated inspectors to help property managers meet their legal obligations under the Fire Safety Order is at its highest rate ever, having doubled over the past year.

In addition, for the first time fire door inspection expertise is being offered online so that anyone can now locate their local specialist through the FDIS website at www.fdis.co.uk/inspector .

Kevin Hulin says:

“The correct specification, maintenance and management of fire doors can be the difference between life and death for building occupants. Unfortunately they remain a significant area of neglect, too often mismanaged throughout their service life, propped open, damaged and badly maintained. Fire door breaches are still one of the most common fines implemented under the Fire Safety Order, 10 years since this law was introduced.

“I am very excited to be taking over the reins from Neil Ashdown. He has done a fantastic job in raising the fire door management agenda with property and health and safety managers and I am looking forward to building on what he has achieved.”
Kevin will also remain chairman of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) Fire Resisting Glazing Group, a member of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Management Committee and an active participant in the Institute of Architectural Ironmongers London group.

The Fire Door Inspection Scheme was established by leading fire door authorities BWF-CERTIFIRE and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers to provide a comprehensive source of information and learning about fire doors and how to manage them, backed by an online education programme and test that leads to a recognised Diploma. Diploma holders can also choose, subject to successful assessment of their knowledge and skills, to become Certificated Fire Door Inspectors.

CE marking of fire resisting doorsets and shutters decision welcomed by DHF

The timescale for the introduction of CE marking for fire resisting doorsets and shutters has finally been announced. The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) says it welcomes the long-awaited announcement after a lengthy period of uncertainty within the door industry.

Compulsory CE marking of external pedestrian doorsets was introduced in 2013 when the Construction Products Regulations became law, but fire resisting doorsets and shutters could not be CE marked until the harmonised standard for those products became available.

Now the timescale of CE Marking to EN 16034:2014 has been defined by the European Commission. From 1 December, 2015, new fire resisting doorsets and shutters complying with the new standard can be voluntarily CE marked.

There follows a three year period of coexistence during which fire resisting doorsets and shutters that are not CE marked can continue to be supplied alongside CE marked products.

After 30 November 2018, all fire resisting doorsets and shutters supplied in the EU (including the UK) must be CE marked in compliance with the standard.

Michael Skelding, general manager and secretary of the DHF said:
“We welcome this announcement. There have been years of debate leading up to the announcement over timescales and so the decision brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding the issue.
“In line with our commitment to raising standards in the industry we have supported the introduction of CE marking and have been giving our members guidance and support on CE marking.”
Doors undergoing fire testing
Before a door company can CE mark fire-resisting doorsets and shutters, they must carry out product testing, implement a factory production control system, obtain product certification from a notified body and issue Declarations of Performance.

Technical guides and comprehensive information on CE marking is available from the DHF website, www.dhfonline.org.uk .

Council is open to everyone thanks to GEZE UK

When the most prominent grade II listed building in Derby was renovated more than 200 reliable and efficient manual and automatic door operators were needed that would ensure ease of use, whilst closing effectively to allow electronic locking for security reasons.

Satisfying this requirement was the challenge faced by GEZE UK at Derby City Council’s offices when it was commissioned by architectural ironmonger Eisenware Limited on behalf of the project architect Corstorphine and Wright to supply a range of automatic door operators as well as manual door closers.

For the Council Chamber, which features large 2.4m high wooden doors, and for specific wooden and glass doors in the corridors, GEZE’s Slimdrive EMD-F electromechanical swing door operators were specified. While it is unusual for automatic operators to be fitted to internal glass doors, the slimline design of the EMD-F operator means that at just 7cm high, it is extremely discreet and sits neatly on the doors’ patch rails.

In this case, automatic door operators were chosen for the internal doors so that swipe cards could be used to restrict access to certain areas of the building and also to assist with the vigorous demands of the Equality Act.

Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK said:
“By redesigning the interior of the Derby City Council offices, the architect has provided a workspace for 2,000 staff, as well as for visiting groups and members of the public. Eisenware worked closely with the client to understand the architectural ironmongery needs throughout the entire building, specify the right solution and schedule installation in line with the build process.

“By working in partnership with Eisenware we were able to provide a range of door operators that would assist with accessibility and security, whilst meeting the conflicting demands of aesthetics, performance, energy efficiency and cost.”
Throughout the rest of the building, doors were fitted with GEZE’s manual range of overhead closers. More than 175 TS 2000 NVs were installed. These are ideal for public buildings because they feature an over pressurisation valve, which protects the operators from damage caused by abuse. They are also highly efficient and feature fully adjustable closing speed, hydraulic latching action and adjustable closing force making it easier to conform to the requirements of Approved Document M and BS 8300.

A further 21 TS 4000 manual overhead closers were used. The TS 4000 offers fully adjustable power EN 1-6 and is suitable for doors from 750 - 1400mm wide. It is also fitted with an adjustable backcheck as standard.

Finally, 11 fire doors were fitted with the TS 4000 E, which has been specifically designed and approved for use on fire and smoke protection doors. It features an electrohydraulic hold open device, which is released in the event of a fire allowing the door to close safely. This compartmentalises the building, holding back fire and smoke, allowing occupants to escape safely.

All of GEZE’s closers are tested to EN 1154 are CE marked and have a DoP. Furthermore, they all have the same styling and match the finish on the automatic operators giving conformity of design throughout the building.

Paul Martin, sales director at Eisenware Architectural Ironmongery Limited added:
“GEZE’s team should be commended on the service that they gave to Eisenware. We employed them to fit ten automatic doors and supply over 200 manual closers within the build, as well as to undertake a full onsite survey. They worked closely with our team throughout to ensure that the right products were specified for each element of the build while ensuring the design was in keeping with the architect’s vision.”
The building refurbishment, which has subsequently won the Refurbished / Recycled Workplace category at the 2014 BCO (British Council for Offices) Awards, was designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent and an A rated Energy Performance Certificate. Electricity is even generated by a hydro-electric system that harnesses power from the River Derwent. It was, therefore, important that all contractors were equally committed towards this aim. GEZE UK has achieved ISO 14001 and is committed to minimising environmental impact both through its products and processes.

For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic and manual door closers call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk .

One St Peter’s Square

Grade A commercial buildings such as the prestigious One St Peter’s Square in Manchester requires doorsets that combine performance standards along with high quality finishes.

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw supplied 550 doorsets with integrated ironmongery to the recently completed BREEAM ‘Excellent’ Grade A office development in the heart of Manchester’s business district. The contemporary building is part of a wider £185 million transformation and redevelopment of the Square, Library Walk, Central Library and The Town Hall extension.

All Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw doorsets supplied to the project were FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) supporting One St Peter’s Square BREEAM ‘Excellent’ status – this scheme is the world’s most established and widely used method of assessing and certifying a building’s sustainability. The American Black Walnut veneer on the doorsets provides a high quality look and finish for the contemporary office development.

The FD 120 doorsets ensure that the fire regulations within the building are met, in compliance with Approved Document B for fire safety. The doorsets supplied not only provide contemporary finishes but also optimum performance standards to meet the requirements of current building regulations for access, fire and acoustics.

The integrated doorsets proposition combines Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s ironmongery to provide the client with a complete doorset solution. The architect Glenn Howells specified bespoke lever handles in grade 316 stainless steel; this robust and non-corrosive steel ensures a clean and sturdy appearance combined with structural simplicity on the lever handle.

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw worked alongside Glenn Howells Architects to devise a locking strategy, the locking cylinders provide a high level of physical security whilst combining simple master keying. This option is ideal for One St Peter’s Square which was designed to combine good levels of security with convenience - ideally suited to employees moving freely between offices without being over specified.

Commenting on Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s work at One St Peter’s Square Stephen Hutsby, Head Of Marketing and Product Development, said:

“Working on a project as prestigious as One St Peter’s square requires a doorset that is durable yet stylish, at Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw we have the ability to produce high quality technical solutions to suit any design requirement, ensuring the right product for the right application”.

Low Cost and Free Publicity - Your company can easily benefit from some publicity like this in return for a contribution towards our layout costs (typically £30 plusVAT), payable via PayPal or credit card  or receive the service absolutely free of charge if you advertise (see below).

We post articles up to twice a day and never delete them - we only archive them each year so that they continue to remain visible to search engines.

To have your story published - just send us your news item, logo and image(s) and we will review the material, make any necessary changes to the wording / wordcount and then advise you when it will be published.

If you take display advertising or product and literature features in our printed and online publications, you will qualify for regular free postings on this blog while you continue to advertise with us.

For details on features and advertising rates please contact us or visit our website.
