Laidlaw: trusted to deliver on large, complex developments

When architects and contractors need a business they can trust to deliver a value-added service on large or complex building projects, they turn to Laidlaw Ironmongery’s Major Projects Division.

This specialist division has a proven track record of successfully completing work on landmark projects, including those in the residential, commercial, healthcare and education sectors, ensuring specifiers receive the best product for the given application.

Managing Director Peter O'Brien said:

“We’ve worked on many highly prestigious schemes across the country and it is clear that our commitment to providing a value-added service, on time and within budget is a crucial factor when it comes to fitting out and completion.

“Because of our experience and attention to detail, we’ve developed strong relationships with architects, main contractors, developers and installers because they know we can be relied upon to achieve the results they are looking for in their projects.”

The expert Laidlaw team played a key role in the £180 million Fitzroy Place development in the City of Westminster, London, providing a range of premium ironmongery for the prestigious scheme, which is built on the site of the former Middlesex Hospital and comprises commercial office space, retail and restaurants, and 235 luxury apartments.

Working for Sir Robert McAlpine, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands Architects and Sheppard Robson, the Major Projects Division delivered more than £400,000 worth of stainless steel and real bronze ironmongery through specialist joinery and fit-out contractor Houston Cox Limited.

Peter O'Brien commented:

“As to be expected on a development of this scale and calibre, there is no compromise on quality and we demonstrated yet again that we have the capacity and expertise to deliver premium products that enhance the overall aesthetic quality of the building.”

Other work by Laidlaw’s Major Projects Division includes the supply of performance doors and ironmongery to Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool. A range of products, including door closers, mortice locks, lever handles, digital locks and ancillaries, were included as part of the £237 million scheme, while for x- ray areas of the hospital, Laidlaw supplied nylon ironmongery because it offers exceptional levels of strength and durability.

Laidlaw was also involved in the development of One St Peter’s Square, the prestigious Grade A commercial building in Manchester's central business district. It supplied Glenn Howells Architects with integrated ironmongery, including lever handles made from grade 316 stainless steel. It also worked with the architect to devise a high-security locking system.

Clients working with the Laidlaw Major Projects Division can expect a full range of services, including:

  • Initial project consultation. We listen to the design brief, budgetary requirements, and agree timelines for specification and cost-plan deliverables.
  • Cost-planning options and life-cycle advice.
  • Sample submittals / mock-up installations and technical data submissions.
  • Detailed door-by-door scheduling / site surveys.
  • Programme management, creating a timeline for actions from first meeting through to on-site deliveries, ensuring that complexity is considered and the relevant trades are engaged in good time. For bespoke products, testing is also accounted for.
  • Project management – we appoint a dedicated project manager to liaise with your design and operations teams and to ensure programme requirements are met.

It also works closely with many of the UK’s leading door suppliers, which means it can provide a full doorset, where required.

To find out more about Laidlaw’s services or to book an initial consultation, telephone 01902 600406.

Wakefield Town Hall is a People’s Palace

The refurbishment of an ornate Victorian Town Hall has breathed new life into a Grade I listed building and allowed it to open its doors as a place of celebration as well as administration.

GEZE UK has helped restore a sense of civic pride to Wakefield Town Hall which has undergone a major refurbishment and added a touch of modernity to its grand interiors.

The installation of automatic doors – powered by GEZE operators - within the redesigned interior has given the building, which originally opened in 1880, additional safety, security and convenience while maintaining the authenticity of the elaborate Victorian decor. The old and the new are subtly blended – each contemporary element gives a nod to its surrounding heritage.

The creation of a glazed inner lobby, within an original open archway which frames the town hall’s traditional heavy, wooden-leaf doors, provides access to a waiting area and beyond into offices and function rooms.

A Slimdrive SL NT operator powers these bi-parting doors which incorporate etched glass panels. These allow visitors to see the ornate detail of the building’s interior while providing a practical draught lobby. The pattern of squares on the glass mirrors the ornate plasterwork in the ceiling above. They are one of the attentions to details that blend together, the old and new so seamlessly.

Another key aspect in the design has been to make the mechanisms of modern-day convenience as unobtrusive as possible. Due to their slim design and a drive unit height of just 7cm, the Slimdrive range can be discreetly installed so they are barely noticeable, and as with all GEZE’s automatic operators, they assist with the demands of the Equality Act and are BS 8300 compliant – helping make the town hall accessible to all.

The work on the automatic doors was undertaken through Laidlaw and Door System Installations which GEZE UK has worked with on many occasions.

Also, fitted to the building are six pairs of Slimdrive EMD-f electromechanical swing door operators, two pairs to each floor. Like the Slimdrive SL NT, at just 7cm high, the Slimdrive EMD-F operator is extremely discreet and sits neatly on the frame. It provides assisted manual or automatic opening using the operating button with guaranteed constant opening and closing speed.

Despite their period appearance, the sets of double doors were a bespoke addition manufactured from hardwood by Longdon Doors to blend with the original Victorian design aesthetic. They are fire-rated and were independently tested with the ironmongery and have intumescent seals which expand in the event of a fire and seal off the gap between the door and the frame - preventing the spread of fire and smoke. This combined fire and smoke seal prevents the spread of smoke prior to the fire seal activating. The Slimdrive EMD-fs have also been fire tested and holds the Certifire Certificate of Approval CF 860 and has fire resistance of up to 120 minutes.

The ornate leaded fanlights which sit over each set of doors are also new additions and reflect the geometric patterns within the original glazing around the front doors. The operators for the swing doors were completed with brass covers to complement the finish of the original ironmongery.

Access control was fitted to each of the Slimdrive EMD-fs which incorporate rebated electrical shear locks, hidden within the frame. This was for aesthetic reasons - the architect did not want to see anything more than was absolutely necessary on the ornate doors. Proximity readers allow staff to flash a fob at a reader on the wall to open the door – providing a vital security element to safeguard the council chambers and offices.

For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic operators, manual door closers and window technology products call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk.

Allegion UK Offers New Meeting Hub facility for Building & Architectural Industry Professionals

Allegion UK, global pioneers of door hardware plan to use their central Birmingham HQ as an industry meeting hub for door, building and architectural professionals.

Based in Aston, Birmingham, the offices house what they call their ‘Security and Safety Learning Centre’. Capable of holding up to 24 people at any given time in the meeting space, the aim is for the centre to be used as a hub for learning and discussion.

Launched in October shortly after relocating from Walsall, the Centre has already held a function for industry body the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers, and the Door Hardware Federation has chosen the venue for an event in January. Plans are now in place to host more regular networking events, with the aim of improving dialogue amongst industry professionals.

The Centre was developed after Allegion recognised that many of their customers and trade partners would benefit from a centrally located and serviced meeting area to discuss industry issues.

“Choosing Birmingham as our UK headquarters was a strategic decision meant to help unite professionals working within the industry,” said Suzanne Taylor-Turnbull, Allegion marketing, communications & brand leader in the EMEIA region. “The central location is key for us to bring together industry leaders and businesses for regular networking events, and by doing so we’ll be improving the relations between vendors, users and suppliers. It’s our hope that collaboration and knowledge across the industry improves overall, in turn helping to ensure the safety and security of building occupants.”

The Security and Safety Learning Centre offers a suite of around-the-doorway safety and security solutions set out by market sector, and contains working models of Allegion’s latest innovations and most successful products. Catering can be arranged for guests wishing to host a meeting or event.

Jim Clark’s Lotus 33 R11 makes first Public Appearance in over 40 years at Race Retro 2017

In the annals of motor racing, few machines are as iconic as the Lotus-Climax Type 33, chassis number R11, the car driven by Jim Clark to first place in the 1965 Belgian, British, German and Syracuse Grands Prix and the Lotus in which he won his second World Championship.

It is only right that this amazing piece of motorsport history be the centrepiece of the Motor Sport Hall of Fame at Race Retro, the international historic motorsport show, held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from 24 – 26 February, where R11 will make its first public appearance in over four decades.
“Jim Clark can lay claim to being the greatest British driver and to discover one of his most successful, championship winning cars in unrestored condition is genuinely remarkable. It is a missing link back to the golden age of motor racing," explains Nick Trott, Editor of Motor Sport Magazine.
When the Type 33 made its first appearance in 1964, it represented the peak of monocoque chassis design and Clark’s Lotus, the second of six models to be completed, was powered by a 1.5 litre Coventry Climax V8 engine.

Victory at Syracuse in April 1965 commenced R11’s racing career and four months later 320,000 spectators at the Nürburgring saw Clark breaking the track record from a standing start on the opening lap before taking the world title. For countless enthusiasts, to see the newsreel footage of the Lotus crossing the finishing line was to witness the culmination of one of the greatest years in the career of any racer.

In 1966 the 33 was fitted with a 2-Litre BRM engine, and in the following year, its body and dashboard were modified to accommodate Graham Hill, who drove the Lotus to second place in Monaco.

R11 was then sold to a Canadian privateer and, now fitted with an Oldsmobile V8 plant, was last raced at the Seattle 200 in 1969. After then, it was dismantled and stored before returning to the UK in 1978 when R11 was acquired by its current owner, who realised that he was presented with the unique opportunity to acquire the ‘Mona Lisa’ of the racing world.

At that time the Lotus’s condition was ‘effectively as original, and it was then carefully stored for 38 years. Today R11’s custodian believes that ‘the time has come for it to be returned to its one-time home base’ and it is to be refurbished by Clive Chapman, who will also appear at Race Retro to discuss the project, and his crew at Classic Team Lotus.

Motor Sport Magazine writer Doug Nye believes the Lotus to be ‘one of the mouth-wateringly significant of all surviving, British Formula One cars’, as featured in the latest issue, and the chance visit to the Motor Sport Hall of Fame at Race Retro and pay tribute to the car indelibly associated with the driver described by Sir Jackie Stewart as ‘the epitome of excellence’ should not be missed.

The Motor Sport Hall of Fame at Race Retro will feature a wealth of stunning racing cars and motorcycles as well as heroes of rallying. It will also host the Motor Sport Live Stage with interviewees including Classic Team Lotus’ Clive Chapman, Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen, Cosworth designer Mike Costin, and a stunning line up of racing and rallying heroes.

Tickets are now on sale for Race Retro, held from 24th to 26th February 2017 at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, with free parking and a free show guide for all visitors. For the latest updates and ticket information, visit www.raceretro.com

New accreditations for Exova Willenhall

Exova, the specialist fire and security testing provider, is currently the first and only testing body in the UK accredited to provide TS008 letterplate testing, alongside three other new accreditations.

Following a recent UKAS audit at the Exova laboratory in Willenhall, TS008 testing has been added to its wide scope of security standards accreditations. As a result of involvement in developing the new standard, which aims to combat ‘fishing style’ burglaries, the expert team will be offering the testing service to manufacturers and developers.

In addition, the testing lab also now has accreditation for:

• PAS24:2016 - Enhanced security performance requirements for doorsets and windows in the UK

• EN1191:2012 - Windows and doors. Resistance to repeated opening and closing on pivoting doorsets, horizontal sliding doorsets, casement windows, & vertical sliding windows

• EN1303:2015 - Building hardware. Cylinders for locks. Requirements and test methods

Door & Window Laboratory Manager, Mark West, comments:

“Exova is leading the way in door and window testing in the UK and has some of the foremost expertise in the industry, having been instrumental in the development of the TS008 test. The enhanced TS008 standard, which falls within the PAS24:2016 standard for domestic security, is mandatory for new dwellings and manufacturers will need to confirm compliance, so we are well placed as the only lab that can offer this test.
“The three other accreditations confirm our position at the forefront of the industry and are a further example of the expertise held within Exova and our ability to provide technically demanding services in response to customer demand.”

The TS008 letterplate testing aims to combat burglaries where thieves ‘fish’ for keys via the letterbox, or enter the house via manipulation of a thumb turn. The UK Building Regulations’ Document Q requires all new and change of use dwellings to comply with security standards.

Exova provides security testing of external doors and windows, to PAS24 and European burglary resistance standards. The expert teams provide assessments of security performance based on existing test evidence and agreed principles.

Agrippa fire door closers easing the way at care home

Agrippa fire door closers have played a key role in ensuring fire compliance at Ard Cuan Residential Home in Northern Ireland, eliminating the need to hard wire in a system to the building.

The care home, based in Portaferry, required the door closers to be installed to ease access whilst protecting elderly residents in the event of a fire.

Billy McClintock, joint owner of Ard Cuan Residential Home had a total of twelve Agrippa fire door closers installed into the care home, where 17 residents are currently living.

He said: “Having just installed a new fire alarm system we were informed by our fire engineer that we had to install door closers on every bedroom door. It looked as though we would have to install magnetic closers which would have necessitated additional wiring for each closer. It was then I came across the Agrippa closer which operates by battery, acoustically and also allows the door to be held open fully or at any point between fully open and closed. They were easy to install and we were able to program them ourselves.

“I would have no hesitation in recommending the Agrippa fire door closer. I would also say we found the staff at Geofire very helpful and understanding.”

The Agrippa fire door closer has been particularly successful within the care home industry due to its quick installation. The device can be installed with minimal disruption to the building and its residents.

Fire door activation devices have been recently recommended by the Care Quality Commission, and are installed to internal fire doors so that in the event of a fire, the spread of smoke and fire is contained rather than spreading throughout the building.

The door closer is part of a range of Agrippa products that ‘listen and learn’ the sound of a building’s specific fire alarm significantly reducing false activations. The range also includes an acoustic door holder and pillow alarm.

The Agrippa range is one of many electromagnetic fire door products designed and manufactured in the UK by British manufacturer Geofire.

Low Cost and Free Publicity - Your company can easily benefit from some publicity like this in return for a contribution towards our layout costs (£35 to £55 plus VAT), payable via PayPal or credit card  or receive the service absolutely free of charge if you advertise (see below).

We post articles up to twice a day and never delete them - we only archive them each year so that they continue to remain visible to search engines.

To have your story published - just send us your news item, logo and image(s) and we will review the material, make any necessary changes to the wording / wordcount and then advise you when it will be published.

If you take display advertising or product and literature features in our printed and online publications, you will qualify for regular free postings on this blog while you continue to advertise with us.

For details on features and advertising rates please contact us or visit our website.
