State-of-the-Art Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Spearheads New Era in Top-Flight GT Racing

Timed to coincide with the international debut of the new Vantage road car, the spectacular new Vantage GT3 mirrors the latest showroom model’s intensified performance, sharpened dynamics and eye-catching style, translating those qualities into a formidable new GT racer and starting the next chapter in Aston Martin’s illustrious motorsport history.

Speaking of the exciting new GT racer, Marco Mattiacci, Global Chief Brand and Commercial Officer of Aston Martin said:

“Simultaneously revealing the new Vantage and Vantage GT3 race car underlines Aston Martin’s commitment to building the world’s finest sports car, and then proving its capabilities on-track.

“It also signals a closer relationship between our road and race programmes, with Aston Martin Racing benefitting from the exceptional pool of talent, experience and knowledge forged in Formula 1® and found throughout Aston Martin Performance Technologies.

“The result is a truly state-of-the-art GT racer; one that clearly shares its DNA with the latest Vantage road car, yet is perfectly evolved to suit the latest GT3 regulations.

“Descended from a succession of multiple world championship-winning predecessors, the new Vantage GT3 is proving irresistible to an impressive international roster of leading GT racing teams.

“Hungry for victory and poised to build upon Aston Martin’s extraordinary track record, the world’s greatest endurance races are firmly in the Vantage GT3’s sights.”

The Vantage GT3 is a comprehensive evolution of the ultra-successful and recently retired Vantage GTE and GT3 cars, which made their debuts in 2018.

Sharing their mechanical architecture – and that of the new Vantage road car – the Vantage GT3 is built around Aston Martin’s proven bonded aluminium chassis structure and powered by its fearsome twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine.

Boasting a dramatic, all-new nose-to-tail aerodynamic package, comprehensively revised suspension and state-of-the-art electronics, together they endow this latest-generation Aston Martin GT racer with world-beating potential.

Built to comply with all FIA GT3 class regulations, including the new-for-2024 LMGT3 category, the new Vantage GT3 is a truly global competitor.

One that will battle for honours in the world’s most competitive GT series, including the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship (IMSA), Fanatec GT World Challenge, European Le Mans Series (ELMS) and the Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie (NLS).

The Vantage GT3 is the first product of the pioneering collaboration between Aston Martin Racing (AMR) and Aston Martin Performance Technologies (AMPT).

Adam Carter, Aston Martin’s Head of Endurance Motorsport, explains:

“The new GT3 is our first opportunity to use AMPT to play a role in leveraging the capabilities, attitude and methodologies of all of Aston Martin’s various nerve centres,  which we’ve then combined with the unrivalled GT programme management expertise of AMR.

The GT racing programme will serve as a development lab that will lead to an increasing transfer of knowledge and approach into future Aston Martin road cars”.

Developed to a strict set of objectives set by AMPT and implemented by AMR, the new Vantage GT3 upgrades centred upon addressing some of the old car’s more challenging handling characteristics with the aim of making the new GT3 as driveable as possible for both professional and amateur drivers alike.

An extensive development programme – including a gruelling 30-hour test – was completed late last year with a combination of Aston Martin’s contracted professional drivers, plus selected amateur racers.

All reported the new Vantage GT3 to be a super-fast-yet-forgiving machine with no vices and a usefully wide set-up window that’s perfectly suited to the unique demands and ultra-competitive nature of top-level GT racing.

As lead engineer on the GT3 programme, Aston Martin Racing’s Head of Performance Gustavo Betelli was charged with ensuring the Vantage GT3 delivered the desired combination of ultimate pace and approachability.

Finding that sweet spot while staying within the FIA’s tightly prescribed and strictly policed Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations was key to hitting AMPT’s transformative objectives:

Adam Carter continues:

“The focus on the new Vantage GT3 was to increase their performance window and make something that would work at any circuit, on any tyre and with any driver.

“We also had to work to the new regulations, so this required additional changes.

“These new generation GT3 cars are more dependent than ever on aerodynamic downforce, so we wanted to make the car more stable under braking.

“The old car would dive a lot under braking, so we had to try and control the pitch with the rear suspension set-up.

“But this meant it was stiff, which made it quite snappy and, also over-worked the tyres.

“Working heavily on damper tuning, we have found a much better balance with the new car so we can generate the downforce without compromising the suspension set-up.

“The result is much-improved progression and greater stability in all conditions. It also works its tyres much more evenly, so teams have more options on strategy.

“The feedback from drivers who’ve tested it has been overwhelmingly positive. Especially the amateur racers, who have been able to achieve lap times that are much closer to the Pros.

“Now we need to go racing!”.

Visually the Vantage GT3 combines the striking design of the new Vantage road car with the extreme downforce-generating aerodynamics that make GT3 racing so popular with racers and fans alike.

Extensive use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) achieved the desired targets for aerodynamic performance and efficiency – while remaining within the FIA’s downforce limits – and input from Aston Martin’s Design department ensured this pure function was matched by perfect form.

The result is a truly breath-taking machine. One that combines the muscular and unmistakable design language of the Vantage road car with the awesome aggression and poise of a purebred racer.

Amongst the most striking aspects of the Vantage GT3 is the new nose.

Not only does the road car’s new wider grille aperture look fabulous, but it afforded AMR the opportunity to increase the volume of ducted cooling air to the brakes, which now give drivers more consistent performance.

The nose itself is a large one-piece clamshell made from carbon fibre.

A quick-release design to facilitate rapid removal and replacement in the event of mid-race accident damage, it houses a full-width laser light and a shorter splitter; the effect of which moves the centre of pressure rearwards to reduce pitch sensitivity and aid stability.

Large louvres in the top of the front wheel arches evacuate high-pressure air to reduce lift, with an even larger stack of louvres in the rear arches allowing high pressure to escape from the rear to reduce drag.

Thanks to its widespread eligibility, the new Vantage GT3 is the weapon of choice for an impressive and ever-growing worldwide roster of Aston Martin Racing partner teams.

This sees long-standing AMR partners Heart of Racing and D’station Racing joined by newcomers such as Germany’s Walkenhorst Motorsport and Belgian team ComToYou Racing.

Flying Lizard Motorsports, already a Vantage GT4 partner team, will now step up to the Vantage GT3 in the US.

It is projected that as many as 30 Vantage GT3s will be actively racing by the end of the 2024 season.

This immediate popularity is the best possible endorsement for the AMR-built machine, which has already been seen in action at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, and will be fighting for victory at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours and - most iconic of all – the 24 Hours of Le Mans later this year.

The Vantage GT3 will also see action in a host of national GT championships around the globe – including the Japanese Super GT Championship and British GT Championship – underlining Aston Martin’s leading role in world motorsport.

Through its various generations since arriving on the world stage in 2012, the Aston Martin Vantage has consistently been a force to be reckoned with at the very highest levels of GT racing.

With an incredible 52 class wins – the first of those scored on its WEC debut - and 11 world championship titles, plus a plethora of victories in a host of other national and international series, the Vantage name is synonymous with GT racing success.

A tradition the new Vantage GT3 is set to continue.

Codelocks Stress the Wide-Ranging impacts of Fire Door Regulations on UK businesses

Newbury-based lock manufacturer, Codelocks was visited by Laura Farris, Newbury MP, last week to discuss the critical implications of proposed changes to fire door testing requirements for UK businesses.

The proposed changes from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (DLUHC) will see a move away from testing to the British Standard BS47622 in favour of testing solely to the European Standard EN1634-1. The change is expected to have negative consequences for UK businesses. According to the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI), which represents lock and hardware manufacturers within the UK, the proposed changes could incur multi-million-pound costs for UK firms, cause potential job losses and remove product choice, all without delivering any meaningful life safety benefits.

During her visit, Laura Farris toured the Codelocks facilities, learned about its digital lock solutions, and heard about the impacts that the proposed changes would have on its UK employees and the wider business.

Colin Campbell, Managing Director at Codelocks commented on the issue:
“If the proposal goes ahead, then many organisations, including our own, will be unable to specify or sell a significant portion of our products without huge investment in re-testing products that are already approved. The consequences for independent hardware businesses in the UK will be significant, affecting the livelihoods of employees in Newbury and other communities across the UK. It may seem like a technical issue, but without raising awareness before it’s too late, there could be significant delays to projects and increased costs for UK businesses. Laura Farris’s visit was important and it’s great to see the government taking time to listen to industry experts on the matter. We’re hopeful that together we can raise further awareness of this pressing issue.”

Douglas Masterson, Technical Manager at the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers, illustrated the scale of the costs, saying:
“We are trying to protect the interests of UK businesses against a significant industry change. The typical cost of the new fire test is about £11,000, with many members having to do substantial amounts of re-testing, for example we have one member with 600 affected products. Test times are estimated to be at least six months with a further six months to receive the test reports. It’s clear to see how quickly those costs would add up for independent UK firms while also causing massive delays and disruption. Whilst large global manufacturers can afford these re-testing costs, the knock-on effect could be large swathes of business leaving the UK.”

The consultation on the proposed changes has gathered over 270 responses so far, and the government will carry out an impact assessment ahead of any changes to the law. The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) has claimed there is no evidence to suggest that this change will make fire doors any safer. It could also introduce the risk of value-engineering and reduced specification for fire doors, effectively making them less safe as a consequence.

“There is broad consensus that the British Standard BS47622 is fit for purpose,” said Colin Campbell. Adding: “Many believe the introduction of a mandatory standard or training for fire door installation and maintenance will better address any safety issues.”

Research from the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) indicates that 75% of fire doors fail to meet the required standards. The top three reasons for failure are fitting, sealing, and maintenance and repair.

Laura Farris MP said of the visit:
“There are many thriving companies in my constituency, and it was a privilege to visit Codelocks and learn about its business. I have heard the potential impacts of the changes to fire door safety regulations and their importance. I will help them to raise awareness of this issue as I do with the many local businesses that I represent.”

Garador’s Solar Energy System Outperforms Expectations

Garador, one of the UK’s first garage door manufacturers to start using a renewable power source for its factory, has announced that its solar-based energy system is outperforming all expectations.

Last summer, Garador installed a vast array of 1600 solar panels on the roof of its Somerset factory as part of the company’s long-term strategy to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. Initially, the solar panels performed well as expected, but energy contribution was predicted to drop in the shorter darker days of winter.

In fact, the latest reports coming in now show that even during the winter months, Garador’s new renewable energy system has not only continued to make a significant contribution towards providing power for the Garador factory, but the system has in fact been steadily outperforming predictions and expectations.

Garador’s Managing Director, Jon Watson says:
“With the latest figures in, we are delighted to see that our solar energy system is continuing to make a strong contribution to our power requirements. Obviously, we had been prepared for changes in input in shorter winter days, but the latest results are very pleasing and a good endorsement of the entire system.”
Garador has installed sophisticated monitoring equipment and specialised software to keep track of power supply and usage, and while the company currently use solar power only for their production machinery, with the good performance figures now coming in they may in the future look at installing a battery bank to store surplus electricity generation.
“With the strong benefits of helping to reduce our carbon footprint and also keeping our overall manufacturing costs down; without doubt our plan last year to invest in solar energy was the right decision,” said Jon.

Mul-T-Lock Gears up for New Commercial Vehicle Protection Range

With commercial vehicle crime continuing to rise according to the latest crime survey statistics, security specialist Mul-T-Lock has introduced a new portfolio of vehicle security solutions, designed to offer the ultimate protection.

Latest figures show that 11,7141  vans were stolen in the UK over the past year, and £3.5bn2  worth of equipment was taken.

With Police Forces and insurance companies citing the need for extra precautionary measures, Mul-T-Lock presents its MVP commercial vehicle locks.

The new range includes the MVP1000, an entry-level locking system suited for almost any type of van door, both rear and sliding.

It also has a push-to-lock design, for quick and easy keyless locking.

MVP1000 is a user-friendly system that can be installed without the need for expert help, making it ideal for most commercial vehicle models.

It is available for purchase either individually or as a pair of two keyed alike on our patented MTL300 key system.

The new system joins the popular MVP2000, designed for ease of installation.

As an active visual and physical deterrent, MVP2000 can be used in conjunction with default vehicle locks or as a retrofit to an existing vehicle and supplied with secure fixings.

The all-in-one, non-corrosive lock body solution offered by MVP2000 has no hanging parts and has a dedicated mounting bracket to protect paintwork beneath the lock.

Says Jamie Jagpal, Mechanical Product Manager of Mul-T-Lock:

“With so many UK businesses relying on their van or multiple vans to operate smoothly, the latest van theft statistics paint an alarming picture.

“The figures speak for themselves and are only predicted to rise, with as many as one in three drivers falling victim to vehicle intrusion, costing workers billions of pounds in lost revenue and replacement tools.

“Our new MVP launch has been designed to specifically address this and offer an affordable proposition to our customers and the market in general.

“We are presenting a portfolio that can offer the ultimate protection for most commercial vehicle models, whilst being quick and easy to install.

“And we will continue to expand the range so that more van owners can benefit from a comprehensive, true innovation in modern commercial vehicle security and lock design.”

MVP1000 and MVP2000 will be joined later in the year with an advanced model MVP3000 to present van owners with a choice of solutions to suit their bespoke van and business requirements.

MVP2000 was recently installed by On Point Electrics, after experiencing a van break-in that resulted in a significant loss of tools, time and work.

Jon Dawson commented:

“The crime was committed in less than 20 seconds, with my van in full view of obvious CCTV systems, in broad daylight, in front of a busy leisure centre.

“The loss of tools for myself and my Apprentice was significant and meant a huge amount of time and resource had to be invested in insurance claims, with the potential loss of work.

“We had to rely on friends and work colleagues to ensure we could continue to meet customer requirements, whilst we replaced all the tools that were stolen.”

Jamie Jagpal concludes:

“Our MVP portfolio sets the standard when it comes to commercial vehicle security.

“We are extending our high-performance commercial vehicle locking solutions to an even wider number of people to ensure the safety and security of their vans and assets with the introduction of the MVP1000, continuing the powerful physical and visual deterrent trend our MVP2000 has demonstrated.

“The imminent launch of MVP3000 demonstrates how we consistently innovate to protect our customers, their assets and help in the fight against commercial vehicle crime.”

Link Controls: Your Trusted Partner for CS-320 Support

Link Controls, take pride in offering outstanding service and technical support to its valued customers. Their mission is to ensure that you have a smooth and hassle-free experience with our products.

As you often have questions about the products - we have done a Q&A session with technical support engineer, Mark Hughes, to answer some frequently asked questions about the CS-320 control panel and provide you with the information you need.

Q1: Can I use the CS320 to replace a CS300 or CS310?

A: The CS320 is a direct replacement for the CS300 and CS310.

The terminal layout and connections are the same so the existing cable set should plug straight in. The CS320 can also be used to replace the discontinued CS250.

Q2: What type of operators can I connect to the CS320?

A: The CS320 is compatible with any three-phase mechanical limit operators up to 2.2kW.

For electronic limits, the CS320 connects to the Kostal DES-B encoder. The CS320 can replace comparable controllers that are compatible with the Kostal encoder.

Q3: I’ve powered the control panel but it doesn’t operate from the enclosure buttons?

A: The controller doesn’t work from the enclosure buttons until the limits have been set.

Use the internal programming buttons or LCD programmer to set limits, then the enclosure buttons become active.

Q4: Do I need the LCD programmer to set limits?

A: No, the limits can be set using the integrated programming buttons on the circuit board.

In fact, fully automatic operation is possible without needing the LCD programmer due to the automatic detection functions for safety edge and photocell.

Q5: Why does the LCD programmer show ERROR SKS CLS but the door operates normally?

A: This means that a safety edge has not been detected, in this case only dead man closing is possible.

If dead man closing is required this message won’t affect the operation of the door or any safety functions but if required; it can be removed by changing the door operating mode using the LCD programmer.

Q6: I retrofitted the CS320 to an older mechanical limit operator, why is the red light flashing 3 times?

A: This usually occurs because the manual override has been activated.

Try turning the power off, disengaging the manual override then powering up to check the fault has cleared. The 3 red flash indication is a limit switch fault, in this case, caused when the limit common is broken by the manual override interlock switch.

Q7: Why has the door stopped part way open and the red light is flashing 6 times??

A: This means the run time has exceeded, this only happens with mechanical limits.

When setting mechanical limits always use adjustment mode, it’s safer and ensures that the run time is automatically learnt.

Q8: The internal red light is flashing continuously, why won’t the door operate?

A: This is a safety circuit activation.

This could be caused by manual override activation or thermal trip. It could be anything connected to one of the safety circuit connections e.g. Safety brake switch, external E-Stop button or ground lock isolator.

Q9: Why does the internal green light flash continuously or it displays PERMANENT INPUT on power up and I can’t operate the door?

A: One of the external commands is permanently activated.

Disconnect the external commands one by one to identify the source of the fault.

Q10: Can the CS320 output door position information?

A: The CS320 has 4-volt-free relay outputs and numerous functions that can be selected using the LCD programmer.

By default, the relays are enabled to give the door an open or closed position for easy interlocking with other equipment.

Q11: Can I connect Light Curtains to the CS320?

A: The CS320 can accept OSE or PNP/SSR type light curtains though we prefer the OSE type.

The LCD programmer is essential as the automatic learning functions won’t correctly detect the light curtain.

Additionally, two sets of light curtains can be connected to the CS320 to ensure full coverage when it is not possible to mount a single set within the door guides.

Q12: Can I connect traffic lights to the CS320?

A: The volt-free programmable relays can be used to control 230Vac or 24Vdc traffic lights.

Using the LCD programmer, pre-warning delays and various light functions can be selected. The CS320 can also offer directional traffic light control.

Q13: Do I need the LCD programmer to turn off the Automatic Closing Timer?

A: No, the closing timer can be turned off by fitting a link to the INPUT 1 terminal just above the safety edge connections.

The CS320 has a default 15-second closing time, to extend the time the LCD programmer is required.

Q14: Can I still use existing remotes from a Mini Standard with the CS320?

A: Unfortunately, the plug-in radio cards used in our Mini Standard cannot be connected to the CS320.

However, we can supply a compatible standalone receiver allowing existing remotes to be re-used.

Q15: Is there a plug-in loop detector for the CS320?

A: We have a 1-channel plug-in loop detector that requires no additional set-up giving an open command.

Ideal for free exit.

Q16: Can I program the CS320 to ignore a safety edge spiral cable/junction box?

A: When electronic limits are used the object passing through the photocell can be ignored by using the PEB POINT function.

Activating the function using the LCD programmer will ignore the photocell below this point.

Q17: Does the CS320 have a cycle counter?

A: The cycle counter can be found in the DIAGNOSIS menu, it shows complete cycles.

Additionally, the CS320 can tell you how many open commands or safety reversals have occurred along with the number of times the open position was reached.

This gives a more realistic indication of usage, particularly in high-duty applications.

Q18: Does the CS320 record fault and safety activations?

A: In addition to showing the status of command, position and safety inputs the DIAGNOSIS menu records faults and safety activations while the door is in motion.

The number of times a particular event occurred and the cycle count of the last event is displayed.

Q19: Does the CS320 offer draw-in protection?

A: We can supply a version of the CS320 with additional plug-in modules and compliant draw-in photocells.

Securing museum collections using digital access control

In response to recent news of theft and misplacement of museum artefacts, Abloy UK is highlighting the challenges of securing buildings and assets in the heritage sector and how access control can reduce these risks.

Lisa O’Flynn, Account Manager at Abloy UK, explains:

“We are seeing an ongoing trend of museum artefacts becoming a target for crime. A report has revealed that more than 1,700 items are currently missing from museums in England1.

“What’s more, an estimated 18.7% of all listed buildings are physically affected by crime annually, equating to over 70,000 listed buildings2.

“Inferior key management systems are providing no record of who is accessing collections or buildings, creating a significant vulnerability in the sector.

“With invaluable artefacts at increasing risk of theft or loss, digital access control solutions are enabling those in charge of collections to ensure their security and have greater peace of mind.”

Abloy UK offers a range of high security solutions to keep heritage buildings and assets safe. One system proving particularly popular is PROTEC2 CLIQ® - a user friendly access management system that enables remote key management and provides comprehensive audit trails on locks and padlocks.

The real-time audit trails show who has accessed which lock and at what time, making staff accountable.

Access rights for keys can be updated remotely from anywhere in the world using the web-based management software, meaning keys can be immediately revoked if required.

The PROTEC2 CLIQ® system is suitable for many different types of locking point, securing artefacts no matter where in a building they are exhibited or stored.

The versatile system also offers flexibility and multiple access points are available, meaning constantly changing access needs can be managed with ease.

The system can grow with a museum’s infrastructure too.

For example, if a museum is constructing a new storehouse, access control can be added to internal and external doors, as well as cabinets, display cases and other storage areas with ease.

The system can be implemented on mobile gallery cabinets too, enabling off-site access management.

PROTEC2 CLIQ® is simple, efficient, and easy to install and maintain, with no wiring needed on cylinders or padlocks, making it an easy retrofit solution even on heritage and grade listed doors.

If a specific heritage aesthetic needs to be retained, locks and cylinders can be provided in an appropriate finish to match the design of a door or cabinet.

PROTEC2 CLIQ® also meets BS EN 15684, which specifies requirements for performance and testing of Mechatronic Cylinders and their keys and/or electronic keys.

It’s practical for everyday use in high traffic environments, withstanding a large volume of people visiting a building.

The innovative Escape Door System (EDS) from Abloy UK is also ideal for museums, offering easy access and egress while ensuring compliance, security, and the ability to implement dynamic lockdown procedures.

With the EDS, it is possible to provide a compliant solution for an escape door when read-in / read-out access control is specified, combining the three components required for BS EN 13637 - Blocking, Control and Trigger.

The Intelligent Control within the EDS allows connection to fire alarm systems or other building control systems to ensure escape in an emergency, and the Trigger unit incorporates a key-switch and a push button that tells the controller to release the locking mechanism to allow safe escape.

Lisa adds:

“With some artefacts worth millions of pounds, the investment in a digital access control system offers an incredible ROI – not just in terms of the value of assets secured but the peace of mind that is gained.

“By implementing a solution such as PROTEC2 CLIQ®, staff efficiency is increased and costs are reduced, as there’s no need to invest in extra monitoring devices.

“The EDS is also an excellent access solution that those in the museums and heritage sector should consider.”

Goodwood Revival to celebrate the legendary John Surtees

Goodwood is proud to announce that the exceptional career of John Surtees – to this day the only person to win World Championships on two and four wheels – will be celebrated at this year’s Goodwood Revival, taking place over the weekend of 6-8 September.

2024 marks 60 years since Surtees won his Formula 1 World Championship, and would have seen the eight-time World Champion celebrate his 90th birthday, this coming Sunday, 11 February.

Reflecting a truly extraordinary motorsport career – which included seven motorcycle World Championships between 1956 and 1960, the 1964 Formula 1 World Championship, and the 1966 Can-Am Championship – the tribute to John Surtees will include everything from 250cc, 350cc and 500cc motorcycles to Grand Prix winners, unlimited sports cars and GTs. In April, the 81st Members’ Meeting will assemble an incredible array of Can-Am cars, Surtees having won the inaugural championship with his eponymous team in 1966.

John Surtees is a key figure in the annals of Goodwood’s unique motorsport history. It was at Goodwood that he tested a car for the first time, in 1959. The following year, it was here that he made his four-wheeled debut in a Formula Junior Cooper, racing for Ken Tyrrell, at the 39th Members’ Meeting in March 1960, finishing a close second to none other than Jim Clark.

That 1960 season was remarkable. Having taken part in his first race on four wheels in March, he made his F1 debut in May, scored his first podium with second place at the British Grand Prix in July, and his first pole position at the Portuguese Grand Prix in August! All while fitting in around his two-wheeled commitments, where he won the 350cc and 500cc World Championships for MV Agusta!

In 1993, Surtees became a Patron of the very first Festival of Speed, utilising his extensive contacts to organise the motorcycle classes for the event and riding his 1952 Vincent up the Hill. Returning to race at the early Goodwood Revivals, ‘Big John’ entertained a new generation of Goodwood motorsport fans, as fiercely competitive in the RAC TT Celebration as he had been on the Circuit during its heyday.

Shortly after his passing in March 2017, the 75th Members’ Meeting paid a moving tribute to Surtees, on the anniversary of the day of that first race in 1960, with a minute’s noise reverberating through the paddocks and The Duke of Richmond leading a commemorative lap in a Team Surtees Lola T70.

We now look forward to honouring the remarkable achievements of an enormously talented driver and rider, as well as the life and legacy of a great friend of Goodwood.

Doug Nye, motorsport historian, co-founder of the Festival of Speed and friend of Goodwood, said:
“John Surtees was simply unique. Despite having spent my entire adult life amongst such ultra-competitive racers as Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart and many more, he was the most competitive personality of them all! He won motorcycling World titles seven times, and the Formula 1 Driver’s World Championship once. On a motorcycle he was magic to watch, just man and machine merged into one - while in a car he took no prisoners yet was still visibly a master - a total perfectionist. From first sampling a racing car at Goodwood in 1959-60 he became one of our first Festival of Speed Patrons in 1993. He was – on two wheels and four – a total star.”
The Duke of Richmond, said:
“As an eight-time World Champion and the only man to achieve the honour on both two and four wheels, John Surtees was not only a huge figure in the history of the Goodwood motor circuit, but also played a big part in the establishment of our modern events. Along with Stirling Moss, John was a Patron of the Festival of Speed and was deeply involved from the very beginning. More than anything, he was an exceptional racer and a great friend.”
Taking place across the weekend, the Surtees tribute will join the full race schedule which is set to run exclusively on sustainable fuels.
