DHF strengthens quality credentials with ISO 9001:2015 certification

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has been awarded ISO 9001:2015 certification, reinforcing its commitment to quality, professionalism, and continual improvement across all areas of its operations.

The certification, awarded in August 2025 by Citation ISO Certification, confirms that DHF has in place robust management systems designed to ensure consistency, compliance, and continuous improvement. Recognised internationally as the benchmark for quality management, ISO 9001 demonstrates that an organisation operates to the highest and most consistent standards of service delivery.

Achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification reflects DHF’s organisational commitment to maintaining clear internal systems and controls, adopting a structured approach to service delivery, embedding a culture of ongoing evaluation and improvement, and responding to the needs and expectations of stakeholders.

The accreditation provides external assurance to DHF members, partners, and the wider industry that the federation continues to operate to recognised standards of quality and professionalism. It builds upon DHF’s existing credentials, which include Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, further establishing the organisation as a trusted and credible body within the sector.

“This is a significant milestone for DHF and a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire team,” said DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “ISO 9001 not only validates the high standards we maintain, but also reinforces our credibility and professionalism within the industry. Our members, partners, and stakeholders can be assured of our commitment to quality at every level.”

Extraordinary season for Maserati in GT2 European Series by Pirelli

Philippe Prette in the no. 1 Maserati GT2 continued his dominance of the Am Class in the GT2 European Series Powered by Pirelli, taking two more victories at the Spanish track in Barcelona and bringing the total to 10 wins out of 12 races.

The Monegasque LP Racing driver crossed the finish line sixth overall in Saturday's race and fourth in Sunday's, placings that earned him class successes. Another outstanding result in the Am Class for the second Maserati GT2 fielded by LP Racing, the no. 8 driven by Stéphane Ratel and Jean-Denis Delétraz, with second place in class on its debut. However, it was a more difficult weekend for Dinamic Motorsport’s Maserati GT2 no. 7, which after a fourth place overall and in Pro Am Class in Saturday's race was forced to retire in Race 2 despite starting from pole position.

In Race 1, Philippe Prette started from second position overall, rising to first when the car in pole position failed to start. The Monegasque LP Racing driver first gave up the lead and then second place, moving back to the front following a contact between the leader and the no. 7 Maserati GT2 driven by Roberto Pampanini.

The time penalties to be served for the double victory in Valencia brought Prette down: he crossed the finish line sixth overall and first in the Am Class after a comeback in the final. Close behind him, the sister car no. 8 driven by Stéphane Ratel and Jean-Denis Delétraz, making their season debut. Fourth place overall and in the Pro Am Class for Dinamic Motorsport’s no. 7, due to a drive-through penalty while in the lead.

Sunday's race saw Mauro Calamia's no. 7 Maserati GT2 start from pole position, but a contact at the first corner damaged the car, eventually forcing him to retire. Philippe Prette, who started from seventh position, maintained the lead in the Am Class throughout the early race and kept it even after the stop. He retained a margin of over 20 seconds over the drivers on his heels and crossed the finish line fourth overall. Forced to retire after a good start to the race, LP Racing’s Maserati GT2 no. 8 was in fourth place in the Am Class before having to stop.

Overall in the 2025 season, Maserati collected the drivers' (with Prette) and team (with LP Racing) titles in the Am class, 13 pole positions (three in Pro Am and 10 in Am), 13 victories (three in Pro Am and 10 in Am), 5 runner-up positions (five in Pro Am) and 2 third places (two in Pro Am).

Maserati was the big name throughout the Barcelona weekend of the GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS: the spotlight was also on the MCXtrema as the official Leading Car for the event.

Maria Conti, Head of Maserati Corse: “The Barcelona weekend was the ideal end to an extraordinary season for Maserati in the GT2 European Series. We racked up pole positions, victories and podiums, demonstrating extraordinary performance, reliability and a true racing spirit. For the second year running, we are proud to celebrate the title in the Am Class, but there are many moments we will remember: the honour of providing the official Safety and Leading Cars for the GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS 2025; the celebration of 20 years since the MC12’s first victory at the 24 Hours of Spa, with our MCXtrema in celebratory livery on the same legendary track; most of all, the passion we brought to every race.”

Skilled, safe, sustainable: Strategies for training and recruiting in construction and maintenance

Nicola John, Managing Director of FDM – Training & Development, explores the key facets companies must consider in addressing the skills gap in construction and maintenance, focusing on the importance of responsible training and recruitment practices.

Last year, the Construction Industry Training Board forecast that 252,000 extra construction workers will be required by 2028 to meet industry demand. This offers great opportunities, but also plenty of risk: companies can’t afford to cut corners with their training in an effort to recruit the people they need. After all, the skills gap has plagued the construction and maintenance industry for far too long.

The Grenfell tragedy illuminated the risks of siloed working practices and incomplete fire safety knowledge. The Hackitt Report further underlined the widespread lack of competency, recommending a move towards the “golden thread” principle of digitised product information. Although promising steps are being taken, raising safety standards nationally remains a big issue for the industry to tackle.

But macroeconomic challenges, including the cost-of-living crisis and hike in National Insurance contributions, are making it much harder for businesses to plan for expansion. Unfortunately, this may also exacerbate the skills gap – particularly if training and recruitment are sidelined. This is not a risk businesses can afford to take.

 Skilled and safe

Firms have a duty to ensure their workforce is skilled and safety conscious. The best way to accomplish this? A long-term commitment to training opportunities boosting competency and promoting continued development. Training is not a tick-box exercise: it verifies that your employees are working safely and complying with legislative requirements.

This is why the importance of hands-on learning cannot be overstated. While online-only training is beneficial for distance learning and refreshing theoretical knowledge, it is not as well-suited to teaching practical people how to do practical work. It’s much more difficult for people to grasp the processes, complexity, and time needed to complete physical tasks – like installing and maintaining fire doors – without actually undertaking these actions themselves. By prioritising physical training with plenty of guided learning hours (or complementing online education with in-person elements), trainees can apply their knowledge of safe working practices more readily to real-world settings.

Holistic training is also vital in raising industry safety standards. Without teaching construction and maintenance professionals about the trades preceding and following their own, the siloed practices dragging the industry down are likely to remain. Training that educates about all stages of the building lifecycle stitches a golden thread of best practice across the industry, as it prompts tradespeople to work with others’ processes in mind. This allows more consideration of safety requirements across the supply chain, raising safety standards holistically.

But this education can’t be a one-off. The nature of the industry necessitates regular training, as legislation on safety standards is constantly changing. Businesses are responsible for keeping their teams updated on changes to legal requirements, so they can strategise on how to exceed standards and make the industry safer for everyone.

Ensuring workforce sustainability through recruitment

By embedding comprehensive training measures into your workplace culture, you won’t just be upskilling your current workforce: you’ll also attract new talent. The BBC’s 2025 Bitesize Careers survey found that, for almost a third of the more than 4,000 teenagers surveyed, “opportunities for training and development” would make a workplace most appealing. A quarter of respondents wanted to undertake an apprenticeship, while a job in construction was one of the top ten most-desired careers. The appetite is there: we just need to harness it.

With the recent focus on paths into vocational careers – including the introduction of T Levels, and the rise of AI highlighting the importance of jobs that can only be done by humans – there has never been a better time to engage the next generation. Offering apprenticeships for under-25s closes the skills gap by training people on the job, and it reduces companies' National Insurance contributions. It’s a win-win.

Businesses should also be establishing relationships with schools and colleges offering vocational courses, such as the newly announced Construction Technical Excellence Colleges, to establish a long-term pipeline of potential new recruits. By engaging young, enthusiastic professionals, we can ensure the sustainability of an industry that is skilled and working safely.

Looking forward

Businesses must demonstrate their steadfast commitment to responsible training and recruitment practices to address the skills gap. It’s no longer enough to simply say the right things: you must lead the way with tangible actions to upskill your workforce.

By ensuring your employees' competency in fire safety and beyond, you can provide the groundwork for the next generation of construction and maintenance professionals to flourish. The result? Safer working practices, construction sites, and built environments for us all.

Benefits for installers and end users

Integration is intuitive, fast, and requires no programming. Electricians save time and resources during installation. End users enjoy maximum convenience: one app, one controller, one system.

Thorsten Hammele, Head of Technology at TEKKO, emphasises: “The cooperation between DoorBird and TEKKO combines smart technology with ease of use – creating door communication that ensures security, comfort, and future readiness alike.”

DoorBird CEO Sascha Keller adds: “With DoorBird and TEKKO, door communication can be conveniently controlled and easily integrated into existing building automation systems – an efficient solution for both new and existing buildings.”

 Advantages of system integration

Abloy UK calls for urgent action on fire door compliance amid rising fire related incidents

To mark Fire Door Safety Week 2025, Abloy UK called for action to improve fire door compliance, following new statistics that show a concerning increase in fires and fire-related deaths and injuries across England.

The latest figures reveal that in the year ending March 2025, Fire and Rescue Services attended 142,494 fires, which is a 2.5% increase compared with the previous year (138,973). 271 fire-related fatalities were recorded, up from 251 in the previous year, highlighting an 8% increase[1].

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, said: “This year’s Fire Door Safety Week came at an important time with the rise in fire-related incidents. A compliant fire door can be the difference between safe escape and tragedy, but only if it’s installed and maintained to the correct standards.”

Doors must be installed, maintained and regularly checked to meet compliance standards as a faulty or non-compliant door can compromise safety, increasing the risks for building occupants in the event of a fire.

The Abloy Academy is continuing to educate the industry through its free RIBA approved Electrical Locking Fire and Escape Doors CPD course. For over a decade, the Academy has provided training on how to specify and maintain compliant fire doors, particularly when integrating access control systems.

The CPD covers the fundamental requirements when incorporating access control systems in commercial buildings, including the electric locking options available, and how to design standard compliant access control systems.

It also explains how to ensure that electric locking specifications meet the requirements of both fire door and escape door legislation. This includes BS EN 179 Emergency Escape (for when the building occupants are aware of the building environment), BS EN 1125 Panic Escape (for environments used by the general public) and BS EN 13637 Electronically Controlled Escape Systems (for use on escape routes).

As well as providing free courses on fire door compliance, Abloy UK also offers a range of compliant security product packages that are specifically designed for panic and escape doors. Its range of electric locks includes motor and solenoid locks, which are the most effective forms of electric locking and adhere to the mandatory fire and escape standards.

Pat added: “By ensuring that individuals are educated about the role of fire doors and the standards they must meet, we can help to prevent avoidable failures. Awareness, correct specification, installation and regular maintenance all come together to keep escape routes protected and people safe in the event of a fire.”

HOPPE hardware specified for Goldfinger House refit

Hungarian-born Ernő Goldfinger was a renowned modernist architect who moved to Britain
in the 1930s. Typical examples of his work include high-rise housing blocks, such as
London’s Trellick Tower, post-war schools and office blocks. He had a distinctive style using
concrete frames and grids of windows.

Ernő’s designs caught the attention of author Ian Fleming, but for all the wrong reasons. The
James Bond author disliked some of Goldfinger’s projects so much he named the villain in
his novels after him.

Many of Ernő’s projects were in London but he also ventured out of the capital to design
Goldfinger House in Solihull, near Birmingham. Originally constructed as the office
headquarters for Carr’s Paper Works in 1955, the Grade II listed building became home to
The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) in 2014.

A view to a refurb

Following a fire risk assessment in 2024, improvements relating to fire doors were
recommended. The building’s owners subsequently worked with local architectural
ironmonger 1st Call Lock and Key Shop Ltd (LKS) to specify new fire door products to help meet building regulations.

Established in Birmingham, in 2004, LKS has grown from a small key cutting trade counter supplying local trade to a full-service architectural ironmonger servicing the Midlands and distributing products throughout the UK. Following a management buyout in 2014 by current managing director Joshua Kambo and business partner John Camp, the company now offers a complete suite of services including survey, design, supply and installation.

LKS conducted a full site survey to establish what products would be required for the
building, where many of the rooms are named after James Bond characters. After developing a schedule of works incorporating products from ARRONE, a HOPPE brand, work began on site.

 Licence to refit

Over the course of a few weeks and multiple phases, with a works schedule and project management devised by LKS, all fire doors throughout the building were removed, the frames were repaired with the correct fire lining, and replaced, bringing the entire building into compliance with all regulations. All finishing works were completed, including decoration, working around CIPP’s hybrid working pattern. This meant that some works had to allow for staff being present.

For the new fire doors, LKS specified the popular AR1500 overhead surface-mounted door
closer. The category of the AR1500 has recently been upgraded from three to four, providing
a controlled closing of a door from at least 180 degrees compared to the previous lower
angle of 105 degrees. It is particularly suited to applications on doors where wider openings
are needed.

The controlled power can be altered by adjusting the spring. This can help in obtaining
acceptable opening forces required to open the door which is a consideration for those less
physically able. The unit also has adjustable closing speed to control the doors closing
speed which can assist wheelchair users. This was an important consideration for LKS to
help accessibility at Goldfinger House and was also specified for the ground floor toilets.

Locks and latches from the ARRONE range were also chosen including the AR8102 mortice
deadlock and both the AR910 and AR8100 mortice sashlocks.

To allow easy operation, the AR3616 straight pull handle in stainless steel is featured on all
fire doors.

From Goldfinger with love

Joshua Kambo, managing director, LKS said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to work on Goldfinger House. This project showcases where we are going as a business. We have the technical know-how and the complete end-to-end solution, from initial survey and specification, through to design, full management, remedial works and sign-off.

“Where we can, we always lead with HOPPE products. The quality of the hardware is
excellent and they always provide the most appropriate onsite and after-service technical
support.”

Andy Syms, senior business development manager, HOPPE (UK) said: “We have worked closely with LKS for many years. In addition to supplying HOPPE and ARRONE products we support with technical advice at every stage from specification to aftercare. Goldfinger House has been an excellent project to not only showcase our products, but the complete service offered by LKS.”

The project was completed in October 2024.

Raising Safety Standards in Automatic Doors

When it comes to building safety, automatic doors may be one of the last elements to be installed — but they’re among the most important. Poorly fitted or maintained doors create real risks for the public.

That’s why the Automatic Door Installation Association (ADIA) is setting the benchmark for safety and compliance across the UK.

Our members access City & Guilds–accredited training, including the BS EN16005 course — ensuring compliance with the Machinery Directive, a legal requirement for powered doorsets.

All qualified engineers are listed on the DoorSafe Register, giving contractors, facilities managers, and building owners confidence that they are working with trusted, accredited professionals.

With training in a variety of courses including fire door safety, industrial doors, access control and more, compliance tools, and industry expertise, ADIA helps members deliver safer, more reliable, and more professional automatic door services.

Find out more at www.theadia.co.uk or visit www.doorsafe.co.uk to find a qualified engineer

Japanese Debut of Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Reimagined by Singer at Fuji Speedway

The Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Reimagined by Singer represents the latest services from Singer, the California-based luxury specialist that restores and reimagines classic Porsche 911s in collaboration with their owners. Cornes Day is an annual celebration of automotive culture, organized by Cornes Group and for 2025 is being held at the iconic Fuji Speedway on October 19, 2025. The event will include both static displays and dynamic displays on the famous racetrack.

Rob Dickinson: Singer’s Founder, Executive Chairman and Creative Director explains: “In the 1980s you could order a new 911 Carrera with the pumped-up bodywork of the Turbo but powered by the company’s latest, naturally aspirated flat six. It became known as the Carrera with Super Sport Equipment. Our services reference this car and celebrate the era with a vision for an ultimate, naturally aspirated, G model 911, reimagined for the twenty-first century.

"At its heart is a remarkable flat-six, bringing together our learnings from the last fifteen years, and adding variable valve timing. The 911 has an incredible following in Japan, so we’re excited to be showing a Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Reimagined by Singer to enthusiasts here for the first time, and to be back with our friends at Cornes Group, who do such a wonderful job of supporting owners here.”

The restoration process

The process begins when the owner of a Porsche 911 (Type 964) sends their car to Singer with the request to carry out a personalized restoration. Originally manufactured by Porsche more than thirty years ago, these sports cars have been on the road ever since, covering thousands of miles in the hands of many drivers.

The first step of the restoration involves the owner’s car being carefully disassembled. The interior is removed, as is the exterior bodywork and all mechanical components, until the steel monocoque (chassis) is revealed. The chassis is painstakingly assessed, cleaned, and prepared so that it is in optimal condition for the next stages of restoration. During this phase, chassis strengthening, developed in consultation with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, is applied to enhance the rigidity of the original Type 964 monocoque.

Leather working

The car displayed at Cornes Day features a remarkable leather working technique. The interiors have been specified with stitched and burnished leather seams – achieved through a long and precise hand-applied, edge sanding and painting technique, requiring 400 hours to complete for each car. This stitch style is derived from the world of luxury leather goods and highlights Singer’s mastery of leather working techniques. The car being shown at Cornes Day is presented in Celeste Passalacqua and combines the stitched and burnished leather seams with velvet corduroy cloth in Mars Pink.

Engine and transmission

The engine in a 911 Carrera Coupe Reimagined by Singer draws on long experience with the 911 and learnings from the DLS program, where the company’s first four-valve cylinder head was born. This expertise allows Singer to continue exploring the performance potential of the Type 964’s iconic flat-six, on behalf of its clients, through a continuous process of careful optimization and the development of a revised four-valve cylinder head. Singer have jointly developed the execution of this engine with Cosworth, who have deployed their unparalleled experience, specifically in the areas of variable valve timing, combustion chamber design and intake and exhaust path.

The engine represents multiple firsts. It is the first engine restored for a Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer to feature variable valve timing, optimizing drivability at low speeds, and power at high revs. It is also the first naturally aspirated engine restored by Singer to use water-cooled cylinder heads combined with air-cooled cylinders, and an electrically powered fan, utilizing learnings from the DLS Turbo program.

Together, these features help the 4.0L flat-six to develop 420HP and broaden the torque delivery across a wider range of engine speeds, while enabling owners in a growing range of countries to restore their cars through Singer’s services.

The engine will rev to over 8000 rpm and, to encourage drivers to explore that range, an optimized, six-speed, manual gearbox can be specified, sending power to the rear wheels. A raised gear shifter may be specified with an exposed shift mechanism, underlining the engineering craftsmanship. A newly developed titanium exhaust system provides free breathing for the flat-six and its famous soundtrack.

Chassis

On behalf of owners, Singer joined forces with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the high-performance engineering arm of Red Bull Technology Group, to increase the strength and torsional rigidity of the original 964 chassis through the restoration process.

Red Bull Advanced Technologies assessed the 964 chassis using their world-class capabilities in simulation and structural analysis. Their work led to the development of a chassis strengthening system, using composite and steel reinforcement, applied to the 964 monocoque at the beginning of the restoration process.

The original Type 964 monocoque remains at the heart of the car, augmented with this strengthening to provide an optimized foundation for each subsequent stage of the restoration, with increased rigidity benefitting handling, braking and overall refinement.

Heritage and cutting edge

Singer’s experience with carbon fibre enables careful balancing of iconic DNA with cutting-edge engineering and material science. While inspired by the G model cars of the 1980s, the bodywork is reimagined for aesthetic and functional performance. The use of carbon fibre allows reduced mass and enhanced stiffness, further sharpening dynamic responses in the manner that Singer’s clients have come to expect.

Inspired by the Super Sport Equipment available in period, the carbon fiber body accommodates wide front and rear bodywork. A deep front spoiler optimizes cooling and airflow at the front of the car, while intakes in the leading edges of the rear fenders direct cooling air to the engine compartment.

The 911 Carrera could be specified in period with or without the famous whale tail rear wing, and Singer’s restoration services allow today’s drivers the same choice. A fixed wing or speed-activated wing manage airflow over the rear of the car for stability at speed. High-performance auxiliary driving lights may also be specified, rising from the front hood when activated and folding down flush when not in use.

Ground control

In common with the 911 Carrera cars in period, the dynamic performance of the engine is enhanced with a sophisticated approach to suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres, enabling drivers to cover ground rapidly, where the conditions allow.

Suspension developed for Singer’s turbocharged services provides the foundation for compliant, sporting handling. New, four-way adjustable dampers with electronic damping control can be adjusted from the driver’s seat and incorporate a nose lift system.

Carbon ceramic brakes developed through the DLS services may be specified, sitting behind 18” centre-lock wheels, providing deep reserves of stopping power.

Tyre technology has developed dramatically since the end of the twentieth century and the use of the latest Michelin Pilot Sport tyres allows the restored car to transmit its power effectively to the road. The driver may select from five drive modes (Road, Sport, Track, Off and Weather) to adjust the levels of intervention from the traction control and electronic stability control, depending on the road conditions and their own capabilities.

Driver-focused interior

Singer’s restoration and modification services enable owners to personalize the interior presentation of their car according to their personal preferences, through bespoke paint, leather, and material finishes. Lightweight sports or track seats may be requested, providing the perfect driving position in combination with the raised gear shifter mechanism.

In front of the driver, the familiar 911 instrument layout is reimagined, with hand-built gauges bringing high-watchmaking standards into the cabin. Singer’s mastery of traditional leatherworking techniques allows owners to request stitched and burnished leather seams throughout the cabin for the first time. Technology is incorporated with restraint, allowing for discrete navigation and phone connectivity.
