The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is pointing out the benefits of specifying doorsets that carry the CE mark. The Federation is also informing architects that from July 1, 2013 new legislation that governs CE marking of doorsets is coming into force.
The DHF is providing information and support to architects and specifiers via RIBA’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme. CPD gives RIBA members the chance to stay up to date by receiving information from organisations such as the DHF.
The DHF has produced a presentation on CE marking under the new Construction Products Regulation and its specific application to doorsets. This will be presented to architects and specifiers around the country.
The CPD presentation makes the point that a doorset carrying the CE mark gives architects the assurance that the doorset conforms to consistent performance standards and meets health and safety requirements.
In addition, by choosing a CE marked doorset, the architect is giving an added benefit to the building owner or occupier. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, the owner or occupier has to carry out risk assessments on fire doors. However, if the door has a CE mark he does not have to carry out a risk assessment concerning the fire resistance of the doorset as supplied.
Said DHF general manager and secretary Michael Skelding: “At the moment, CE marking of construction products such as doorsets is governed by the Construction Products Directive under which CE marking is voluntary in the UK. When the Directive is replaced by the new Construction Products Regulation, CE marking will be compulsory.
“We are working closely with RIBA to inform their members that there are real benefits to specifying CE marked doorsets. We are also taking the opportunity of telling them that the CE mark on the door gives them and the building owner peace of mind.
“It indicates health and safety conformity, simplifies risk assessments and establishes that the building owner or occupier has applied due diligence under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.”
