HOPPE (UK) Ltd becomes first manufacturer certified by Element under new STS217 scheme

Element Materials Technology (Element), which acquired Exova Group Limited (Exova) last year to create one, world-class global testing services partner, has announced that HOPPE (UK) Ltd is the first manufacturer to become certified under its newly introduced STS217 certification scheme for TS007 lever handles.

The STS217 certification scheme, which tests security handles for burglar resistance, is a recent addition to the testing offering at Element’s supersite in Wednesbury.

The process involves a manual attack test, designed to combat cylinder snapping – one of the quickest and most popular methods of breaking into doors and windows. The successful testing will certify HOPPE (UK)’s handles as a secure product.

John Prosser, marketing services for product range and assortment at HOPPE (UK), said:
“HOPPE (UK) is committed to ensuring its products are tested to the highest standards. The STS217 certification scheme is a fantastic way to prove to our customers that our products won’t be compromised by common methods of attack used by opportunist burglars.
“As TS007 is one of the only standards to cover the retrofit market, it also allows us to offer our customers a more flexible approach to retrofitting security hardware without having to worry about performance.”

Rob Veitch, EVP Fire & Building Products at Element, comments:
“Element is leading the way in door and window testing in the UK and has some of the foremost expertise in the industry. We are committed to offering our clients a complete range of testing services approved to the very highest levels of excellence.

“Now that HOPPE (UK) Ltd has become certified under the scheme, buyers can have confidence that its handles have gone through a rigorous testing process, are of the best quality and functionality and, most importantly, are burglar resistant.”

Element provides security testing of external doors and windows, to PAS24 and European burglary resistance standards. The expert teams provide assessments of security performance based on existing test evidence and agreed principles.

New Sapa Sliding Door Meets Demand for Transitional Living

Driven by the trend for transitional indoor-outdoor living, aluminium systems specialist Sapa has launched its high-end sliding door – the C160S.

Belonging to an entirely new generation of sliding systems, this energy efficient door combines a great aesthetic with high thermal performance - ideal for urban apartments and traditional homes alike.

Achieve better energy efficiency

Reflecting increasing product performance requirements within building regulations, the C160S delivers the thermal values required for tomorrow’s residential needs, today.

Energy performance is designed into the heart of the lift and slide door system coupling profiles with 50mm glass fibre reinforced polyamide strips to reduce thermal conduction.

Further improvements to thermal performance, if required, can be achieved by the use of customised thermal barrier elements within the profile cavities of the door and frame.

Frame exceptional views with large glass panels

The improved thermal performance does not compromise the system’s strength. Capable of glazing areas up to 2.8m high, its range of track configurations provide multiple opening and fixed glaze options.

Acoustic needs are also well catered for with glazing depths of up to 53mm making it ideally suited for environments where external noise might be problematic.

Utilising stainless steel rails and polyamide rollers ensures the lift and slide system provides a light touch and ease of operation on even the largest of doors.

Integrate interior and exterior design effortlessly

Design and style within residential apartments and houses play a key role. The C160S design allows for dual colour options meaning exterior building requirements need not affect interior design choices.

With over 400 powder coated paint colours available in matt, gloss or satin and an optional anodised finish, accessories can also be supplied in corresponding colours to match the profiles for a coordinated look.

Designed with attention to detail

Real attention has been paid to both finishing details and building integration; for example, integration of the frame into the building structure renders the outer frame near invisible, maximising the available light while allowing a flush finish to the internal floor.

Where such integration is not possible a range of standard and low threshold options are available. The C160S also features an ingenious reverse locking principle, with elegant locking plates on the frame side, eliminating unattractive and protruding locking bolts whilst protecting the operator from risk of snagging.

Excellent weather performance

Featuring integrated sealing with two levels of drainage for efficient water evacuation and EPDM gaskets throughout the lift-slide door ensures water and draft free closure, whatever it faces.

Dependent upon configuration, the C160S achieves impressive weather performance; 600 Pa for air permeability (EN 12207), 900 Pa for water tightness (EN 12208) and 1800Pa for wind resistance (EN 12210).

Commenting on the launch of the new door system, Sapa’s Market Manager James Wilson said:
“Trends in increased daylighting require larger glass sizes and weights; however, when these are applied to sliding doors the system strength and ease of operation are critical.
“Our C160S offers specifiers and homeowners a highly attractive aesthetic line, exceptional performance and remarkable ease of use.
“Recent C160S developments means we are now ideally placed to advise on optimised large sliding glazed solutions and we would urge customers to contact us for any specification support required.”

About Sapa Building Systems

Fire door safety campaigners stepping up the first line of defence

Fire door safety campaigners are, through Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW), working to ensure public and private sector landlords and building owners stop risking the lives of tenants and ensure fire doors are correctly inspected, specified, fitted and maintained.

Fire doors are the first line of defence against devastating fires and when properly built, installed and maintained, they save lives and protect property. Despite this, fire doors across the UK are still badly fitted, non-compliant, left propped open or damaged and, as a result, could be putting millions of lives at stake.

The team behind FDSW (24-30th September 2018) is gearing up for its 2018 campaign that will continue to educate about the critical role that fire doors play in delaying the spread of smoke and fire, and keeping occupants and fire fighters safe.

Now in its sixth year, this year’s FDSW campaign - Fire Door Five: Shutting the door on fire and smoke – aims to draw attention to the importance of properly-fitted and accredited fire doors as well as raising awareness of the dangers of smoke inhalation and the role that correctly installed fire doors can do in preventing the spread of both fire and smoke.

Part of the activity will see campaigners explore the need to establish a Building Safety Fund to help pay for vital and life-saving fire safety improvements in Local Authority and Housing Association accommodation.

Hannah Mansell, spokesperson for FDSW, as well as British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Head of Technical Research and Insight, chair of the Passive Fire Protection Forum and a trustee of the Children’s Burns Trust, says:

“Through Fire Door Safety Week, we will once more renew our efforts to ensure that residents, landlords and building owners across the UK are armed with the information they need to make informed decisions that will improve safety. There is no doubt that fire doors, fully fitted with their correct and compatible components, that are properly installed and maintained play a crucial role in saving lives in the event of a fire.  The legacy of neglect means more lives could be lost as a result of substandard fire protection measures. We know that the necessary corrective actions will cost and that is why we are asking the Government set up a Building Safety Fund for Housing Associations and Local Authorities to carry out replacement and repair works. Finance should not be used as an excuse. The stakes are too high.
“Tenants and the general public will, as always, play a key part and get their voices heard by reporting doors that are propped open, damaged or in poor condition, rather than waiting for landlords or building owners to inspect fire doors. As part of Fire Door Safety Week, we have created a Five Step Fire Door Check to help people check their fire doors and empower them to report faulty doors.
“Over the last year, there has been significant discussion about the responsibility of landlords, councils and Housing Associations to ensure the safety of their tenants but there is still a massive learning curve in terms of awareness about how fire doors that are correctly specified, installed, maintained and of course closed can limit the effect of fire and smoke, and what to do in the event of a fire.  Because of this uncertainty, our focus for fire door safety week this year is “shutting the door on fire and smoke” and we want to educate everyone on how effective fire doors can be in stopping the spread of fire and smoke.”

FDSW, a national campaign, is run by the British Woodworking Federation, the BWF-Certifire Scheme and the Fire Door Inspection Scheme, in partnership with the Home Office’s National Fire Safety campaign.

Throughout the week (24-30th September 2018), there will be numerous events and campaign activity to raise awareness about the importance of fire door safety. To access a free toolkit of fire safety advice resources to help run your own FDSW activities, visit www.firedoorsafetyweek.co.uk

Garador introduce New Operator for Canopy Garage Doors

The UK’s leading garage door manufacturer, Garador, have just introduced a slick new operator to automate their range of canopy geared up and over garage doors

The aptly named, GaraMatic Canopy Operator, has been designed specifically to electrically operate Garador’s canopy garage doors.

Garador’s Managing Director, Simon Hipgrave comments:
“The new GaraMatic Canopy Operator has been designed specifically for Garador’s range of canopy up & over doors and we believe it is an excellent new addition to our existing range of operators.”
In the past, canopy bow arm conversions have tended to involve the use of a rather bulky and very intrusive lifting arm which was attached to the back of the canopy door. This would reduce the drive through height into the garage by at least 140mm and was not the most elegant device to look at either.

Garador’s engineering team have been working hard over the last few years to develop a more streamlined version and are really pleased to announce the new GaraMatic Canopy operator which includes a sleek new activating arm.

When in the open position, the activating arm sits behind the top edge of the garage door, enabling full opening height as well as full drive through height. Another unique feature is that the door is fully operational in manual mode.

Garador have also produced a short video on their YouTube channel, showing how quickly and easily the GaraMatic Canopy Operator can be installed.

The GaraMatic Canopy operator is quick and easy to retrofit to existing canopy garage doors and is therefore expected to be a huge success, providing homeowners with a more convenient way to open their Garador canopy garage door.

To view the full range of Garador Up & Over garage doors, please visit www.garador.co.uk

Abloy asks, “When is a key more than just a key?” in New Video

Security expert Abloy UK has launched a new video aimed at key Critical National Infrastructure decision makers, asking the question, “when is a key more than just a key?”

The informative video centres on how much time, money and energy is wasted by companies who have contractors travelling between sites only to find they don’t have the correct key to access assets. It also looks at the implications that lost keys can have, including the negative impact on operational efficiency and possible disruption to critical services.

Offering a solution in the form of CLIQ® technology, Abloy explains that with this system service jobs can easily be assigned, and audit trails can be tracked while contractors are on the move. What’s more, service job costs can be verified meaning spend can be effectively controlled.

With CLIQ®, access to multiple sites and equipment can be validated and controlled, with anomalies reported in real time for enhanced security. Access rights can even be updated securely via a smartphone, utilising highly encrypted Bluetooth technology.

CLIQ® also integrates with existing systems such as H&S, Compliance and Permit To Work, so competencies can be verified before access is granted.

All this means aborted journeys can be substantially reduced, improving operational efficiency and reducing costs, while offering an excellent return on investment and contributing to corporate sustainability targets. Downtime is also minimised and the risk of lost keys is eliminated, offering a future-proof security solution - CLIQ® technology has converted the key into a Credential.

To learn more, watch the video here: www.youtube.com

dormakaba Operator Chosen by Smart to Launch Security-Rated Smart Wall Auto Slide Door

Leading manufacturer of access and security solutions, dormakaba, has partnered with Smart Architectural Aluminium to aid in the development of a PAS 24 Tested Automatic Sliding Door system.

Smart Architectural Aluminium has introduced a PAS 24 option to its auto-slide Smart Wall door system, featuring standard and fire escape door variants, the new auto-slide door is the first in the UK to be fully tested to the latest PAS 24 standards.

Representing the latest security upgrade to Smart’s established Smart Wall system, the new auto-slide door provides architects, designers and facilities managers with even more flexibility when working on both new build and refurbishment projects.

In developing the new door, Smart Architectural Aluminium worked with dormakaba’s ES200 operator to develop a sliding door system that would provide a robust solution ideal for high traffic environments and emergency exits.

Kevin Cole, Smart’s Senior Project Engineer, said:
“Having elected to use the dormakaba ES200 sliding door operator system, our team undertook some re-design work of the existing Smart Wall door system to ensure that the auto-slide product delivers the same demanding performance and aesthetic requirements as the rest of the system, including the achievement of the new PAS 24 standards.”
Lee Chandler, Product Marketing Manager at dormakaba commented:
“Our ES 200 operator offered the perfect solution for the Smart Wall door, enabling it to operate smoothly, quietly and efficiently with a wide range of widths, weights and functionality. We have worked with Smart for many years on a number of projects and it has been great to work in collaboration again, to successfully bring this new product to launch.”

Curvaglide® System Coolly Slides past Bi-Folds

Massive sliding curved glass doors with class-leading Low-E values have been developed for the luxury housing market by Surrey specialists Balconette.

Curved sliding patio doors may well replace the Bi-Fold phenomenon over the next decade, with a new system pushing the boundaries wider than ever before.

Described as an architect’s dream design flourish, Balconette have re-engineered sliding curved glass from the ground up. The newly-launched Curvaglide® system is bespoke built for the curved facades that are becoming ever more popular in the luxury housing market. The range also benefits from Balconette’s new in-house development of Soft Low-E coating application, which brings energy efficiency levels for curved glass up to leading levels for flat glass for the first time.

Exclusive product

The newly-launched Curvaglide® system is bespoke built to fit curved facades. Enhanced tracks and rolling mechanisms mean previous width limits have been greatly expanded, with installations of up to 19 metres already completed. Customisable options mean the doors can be overlapped in a variety of different configurations.

Effi Wolff, CEO of Balconette
“Curved patio doors are a high-end, exclusive product” says Balconette CEO Effi Wolff. “Bi-fold patio doors have become commonplace, but curved building facades are rare, and demand something special. The system is aimed at architects designing high-end new builds and luxury extensions.

“We engineered a new support structure and rolling mechanisms to handle these extreme widths. For properties lucky enough to feature curving walls, the new Curvaglide® doors are the perfect complement. Owners get to feel as if they are in the landscape, not just looking at it.”

Both the curved glass and matched frames are made to measure in-house by Balconette, who have UK headquarters 40 minutes outside London. The sliding mechanism uses 2 or 3 tracks, allowing customised configurations of fixed and sliding doors. The smallest configuration uses just 2 panes, both sliding to reveal a 50% opening. For larger installations, up to 4 doors can be slideable.

“All our curved glass doors come with 28mm double-glazing with low E glass and toughened safety glass on both sides”, continues Wolff. “Comparing this with a standard pane of glass, our double-glazing units stop at least half the heat transferring through the glass itself. The curvature also provides a lower heat transference."

Low Energy Curve

The ‘Low-E’ glass used in the Curvaglide® system is another unique feature developed by Balconette, providing greater comfort and much better energy efficiency. Curved glass is usually provided with a ‘hard’ Low-E coating to cut down heat transference. The soft Low-E coatings used by Balconette are far more advanced and reduce heat transference by an extra 30%.

The Curvaglide® system uses Guardian SN51/28 glass, with a centre pane U value of 1.0 W/mK – significantly better than the best hard coat Low-E U-value of 1.5 W/mK.

Wolff explains: “Manufacture of curved glass is significantly more challenging than flat glass, particularly in the application of Low-E coatings. We don’t know of anyone else in the UK who is able to offer curved glass with the extra efficiency of a Low-E Soft coating.”

Featured at Tate St. Ives

The system has already been used in the refurbishment of Tate St. Ives, where the curved glass fa├žade now overlooks the beach. Wolff continues:“ Architects as far away as California have asked us for these doors. They simply have not been available. Besides the coating improvement, we had to design and engineer a structural system that could support the physical stresses and remain smooth, quiet and strong. Because we manufacture both the curved glass and frames in house we can be sure of smooth movement of the doors and a “hand in glove fit.

“Curved facades are rare but they have long been popular with architects. Charles Deaton, famous for the curved house featured in the Woody Allen film “Sleeper”, famously said: ‘If people do not have angles then we should not live in boxes’.”

“The Curvaglide®range is undoubtedly a luxury item, but it opens up completely new possibilities for architects. If you have a wonderful view and want to really make the most of it, nothing else comes close”.

“Our doors can be curved to complement, highlight or harmonise with the lines or features of the building design. We have long experience working with architects and builders and give thorough technical support and advice from conception to installation”.

Opening Doors to the Future

There is a big change happening to doors right now, throughout the design world.

Doors used to be a designers nightmare, the last design item to be resolved. Just finished a fantastic room design, contemporary, modernistic and then, a compromise....how to find a door design that fits in with the overall room design.

This problem has been solved by the use of flush finished doors, a trend that is changing Interior doors.

A door panel that is flush to the wall means it can be completely incorporated into the room design whatever that design is. No more compromises.

The door can now be painted or wallpapered so the design runs over the door surface effectively completely integrating it into the design. Alternatively it can be painted the perfect contrasting colour for a stunning effect that adds to the overall picture.

Rocket Door Frames are at the forefront of this interesting trend having developed a galvanised steel door frame with invisible hinges that cannot be seen and are 3-way adjustable for a perfect fit every time. The frame fit UK standard size doors so you can choose your own door.

The frame has perforated edges for plastering perfectly flush with the wall and can be adjusted to fit a wall width from 88 to 125 mm finished wall thickness. With a pull left or pull right opening you have the flexibility to achieve the result you are looking for.

The Rocket Door Frame has been approved for use with a wide range of FD30 door panels with the simple addition of the Rocket Fire Door Kit, this includes the intumescent strips which fit to the framework so no need to rout out the door edges.

Long-lost ’68 “Bullitt” Movie Mustang to Feature at Goodwood Festival of Speed

The iconic 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in Warner Bros. Pictures’ classic film “Bullitt” – and lost to history until the beginning of this year – will make its first appearance outside of the U.S. at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, U.K., July 12-15.

The car that starred in the Warner Bros. film’s legendary 10-minute chase sequence – setting the standard for every movie car chase to follow – is set to feature on the 1.16-mile (1.9-kilometre) Goodwood Hillclimb course alongside the new special edition Ford Mustang Bullitt, now available to order in Europe and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the classic film.

One of two identical 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks used in the filming of “Bullitt”, the historic vehicle driven by McQueen resurfaced after more than three decades in storage.

To fulfil his family’s lifelong dream, owner, Sean Kiernan, who inherited the car in 2014 from his late father, Robert, contacted Ford and the two parties worked together to reveal his movie star car at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Detroit, in January. Kiernan is accompanying the car during its European debut at Goodwood.

Another very special Ford Mustang in one-off Eagle Squadron livery has been co-created by Ford Performance and Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s RTR Vehicles to pay tribute at Goodwood to American fighter pilots who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II.

World champion drifter Gittin Jr. will pilot the 700 horsepower Eagle Squadron Mustang GT on the Hillclimb course before the unique sports car is returned to the U.S. to be auctioned at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s largest fundraiser, The Gathering – with proceeds supporting the Association’s youth education programmes. Gittin Jr. also returns to the Hillclimb in his bespoke Mustang RTR drift car.

Visitors to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed can also witness the ultra-high-performance Ford GT supercar perform on the Hillclimb course driven by Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team World Endurance Championship drivers Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell – fresh from competing at the Le Mans 24 Hours race.

Making its Hillclimb and Forest Rally Stage debuts, the rally-winning performance of M-Sport Ford Fiesta World Rally Championship car will be demonstrated by M-Sport Ford World Rally Team drivers Sebastien Ogier – five-time winner of the World Rally Drivers' Championship, and Elfyn Evans – former British Rally Championship winner.

In addition to the track and rally stage action, visitors to the Ford stand at Goodwood have the opportunity to discover new models including the all-new Ford Focus and Ford’s comprehensive sport utility vehicle line-up that includes the compact EcoSport, mid-sized Kuga and flagship Edge models.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed runs from Thursday, July 12 to Sunday, July 15 at Goodwood House, West Sussex, England.

For updates on Ford’s activities in the run-up to and during the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed – including the arrival of the iconic original Bullitt Mustang in Europe for the first time – follow www.twitter.com/FordEu and www.youtube.com/fordofeurope.
