Driving home for Christmas

Road safety charity the IAM is offering weekly motoring tips from Britain’s top advanced driver, Peter Rodger.

This week, he is advising you on safely making your journey home at Christmas:

•    Prepare your vehicle beforehand: check tyre pressure, top up your washer fluid and make sure all your lights are working.

•    Plan your journey by checking the weather conditions both the start and end locations of your journey. Check updates on the radio during your journey, and take a map so you can re-route if necessary.

•    Share the driving on long journeys, as fatigue is likely to set in.

•    Take regular breaks, ideally every two hours or less.

•    Pack enough food, books and games to keep the kids occupied.

•    Let someone at home know what time you expect to arrive.

•    Watch out for other road users - give them plenty of room and consideration.

•    In case the worst happens, ensure that you have plenty of fuel. Pack an emergency kit of spare clothes, a shovel, water, food, an ice scraper, a reflective jacket and a fully charged mobile phone with your breakdown provider’s details programmed in. It is also a good idea to carry with you any regular medication you take as your journey may take longer than planned.

Peter said: “The last thing you need at Christmas is to be caught out and held up on your way to see the loved ones. Take the time to prepare and plan your journey from start to finish to drive your way to festive harmony.”

To help drivers stay safe this winter, the IAM has launched a new website, drivingadvice.org.uk, with traffic updates, weather forecasts and tips on how to drive safely in winter.

Tips cover rain, snow, ice, fog and wind – everything you can expect in a typically unpredictable British winter. Check it out before you travel.

Looks like it’s going to rain-dear

Driving home on the M4

Road safety charity the IAM is offering weekly motoring tips from Britain’s top advanced driver, Peter Rodger.

In response to the current severe weather warnings, he gives advice on driving in heavy rain:

•    Before you set off, set your heater controls – rain makes the windows mist up in seconds. You don’t want to be fiddling with controls when you should be concentrating on the road.

•    Watch your speed – In the rain your stopping distance should be at least doubled. Giving yourself more space will help to avoid spray; especially important when following a large vehicle.

•    Keep your eyes on the road ahead and plan your driving so that you can brake, accelerate and steer smoothly. Be aware that harsh manoeuvres can unbalance the car.

•    If you have cruise control, avoid using it on wet roads – it may create problems if you start to aquaplane.

•    See and be seen. Put your lights on – as a rule of thumb, whenever you need to use your wipers you should also turn your headlights on, and before overtaking put your wipers on their fastest setting to allow for spray.

•    Making sure your car is properly maintained will make a difference too. Check your windscreen wipers, tyre pressure and tread depth, and that all of your lights work and are clean. Make sure that as well as keeping your washer fluid topped up, you also clean the inside of your windscreen as not to hinder your view.

Peter said: "There’s nothing quite like getting to your car in the rain. It’s a haven from the elements. But be cautious, especially after prolonged dry spells – rain on a dry road is dangerously slippery.

“The prospect of waiting for a bus in the pouring rain after your work Christmas party is a daunting one, but don’t fall into the temptation of driving home after drinking – a drink-driving conviction is not worth the avoidance of soggy trousers.”

An Historic Celebration for DHF Garage Door Group Joint Chair, Julie Chester

Thousands of runners braved wet and windy weather to take part in Preston’s first Guild Marathon. Amongst them was Julie Chester, joint chair of the DHF Garage Door Group who was running her first 26.2 mile event.

A total of 4650 competitors took part in a full and half marathon, and crowds of well wishers lined the streets to offer support. Whilst no comparison in scale to other big city races, a number of roads were closed in Preston to allow runners to fully experience the city. The undulating course wasn’t made any easier by the poor conditions but Julie was pleased to complete the distance in a credible 4 hours 10 minutes.

The Marathon was organised as part of the Guild series of races. Preston Guild is an historic celebration, which dates back to 1179 - sharing a heritage of over 800 years. It is the only Guild still celebrated in the UK and, as such, is truly unique. Held only once every 20 years, Julie reckons she has an excuse not to run the Preston Guild Marathon again – at least not until 2032.

Hörmann on top of the world

Earlier this year the MD of Hörmann's largest reseller in Norway unfurled a Hörmann flag on the top of the world as he fulfilled his dream to climb Mount Everest.

54 year old Arvid Lahti is a passionate mountaineer and has scaled many peaks over 16,000 ft including the Cho Oyu the world's sixth highest peak at 26,906 ft. However the challenge and danger of an ascent of Everest was always his goal.

Sponsorship from Hörmann was a key part of the fundraising package needed for the two month trip. Acclimatisation at base camp prior to the climb is essential and the dangers are ever present. Only days before this ascent, two climbers lost their lives on the dangerous descent from the mountain.

On returning to his home town of Masfjorden, Lahti was both exhilarated and exhausted, “It was a long trip and was actually much harder than I thought it would be,” says Lahti. “I had read several reports from others who had made it to the top, but I have to say that the trip was much more difficult than anything you can read about in a book.”

He blocked out the actual dangers of the journey whilst on the mountain. “It was only clear to us after we reached the bottom again that we had been in mortal danger each and every day.

“This is a dream come true and I will remember it for the rest of my life. Reaching the peak of Mount Everest is the greatest experience for most mountaineers and standing at the top and looking out over the entire world is a feeling like no other,” he adds.

Lahti is also thankful for the support provided by Hörmann. “I never would have been able to finance this journey without such a sponsor. Hörmann played an important role in my reaching the top of Mount Everest.”

Master Locksmiths Association - 2012 roundup and looking ahead for 2013

Comment by Dr Steffan George, development director for the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA).

2012 has been an eventful year for all of us within the security industry – with the crowds at the Olympics and changes in legislation surrounding squatting being just a couple of the high profile issues that drew attention to the importance of effective security this year.

At the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) we have been incredibly busy ourselves – work towards launching a nationally recognised qualification and apprenticeship scheme has been ongoing and we have had major input into the content of the qualification, with Skills for Security and the MLA’s chosen awarding body HABC due to officially launch both the apprenticeship and qualification next year.

Furthermore we have significantly invested in our website to create a more user friendly site to enable customers to find a reputable locksmith in their local area.  In addition to providing a more customer-focused front our new site provides simple yet effective advice on domestic and commercial security, making it a one stop shop for security advice.

Sadly we are still hearing reports of scam operations who are positioning themselves as MLA members or using the names and addresses of genuine local firms despite not being in the area they claim to be – our new website, PR and marketing activity as well as work with third parties such as Trading Standards, aims to combat this and prevent the general public from being taken in by rogue traders.

2012 has seen us continue a sustained PR campaign which promotes the importance of security and the benefits of MLA members to both consumer and business audiences – commissioned articles range from health press (Caring Times, Learning Disability Practice) to Property (GSPC, Property Investor Today, Landlord Zone) to consumer press (J Life, Your Home, Real Home, The Sunday Mirror) and trade (Public Sector Build Journal, Building Engineer, The Jeweller, Retail Digital.)

Furthermore our security regular column has been highly successful in press all over the country and regularly features in publications including Yorkshire Post, The Wells Journal, Derby Telegraph, Coventry Telegraph, The Newcastle Journal, Nottingham Evening Post and The Lincolnshire Echo to name just a few.

The year also saw the successful launch of a new membership category for practicing locksmiths which has seen great take up by those who meet the criteria. We also enjoyed record retention rates evidentially the significant benefits of being an MLA member are proving their worth.

In 2012 we have seen more regional training and member events than ever before, allowing members to get first hand advice and build up relationships and even partnerships with fellow locksmiths with a shared interest.

2013 is shaping up to be another busy year for all at the MLA with further work on Search Engine Optimisation to the website and even more information and articles offering security advice on a wide range of issues to consumers.

In addition we are developing an e-newsletter campaign which we aim to launch in 2013 to offer members, partners, customers and the media alike regular updates on security matters, MLA news and topical industry updates.

We will also be working on developing yet more members’ benefits to ensure we provide maximum value to our members.  In addition our 17th incarnation of the MLA Expo in 2013 is shaping up to be one of the biggest locksmith exhibitions yet – with 20 per cent of space sold within just 24 hours of launch.  The 2013 event will see the not only great deals for those looking to purchase locksmith related products, but will also see the usual highly acclaimed Expo training and this year a fantastic prize draw for visitors – the top prize being a trip to Las Vegas.

Also, back by popular demand for the 2013 event we will have various evening social events to enable locksmiths, suppliers and trainers to get to know each other and network in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.  We hope to see those of you in the trade at the International Centre in Telford on 13-15 September 2013 and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy, prosperous and secure 2013.

One Piece Garage Doors in Demise, According to Garage Door Systems

Anthracite Grey M-Rib Sectional Door
from the Garage Door Systems Linear Collection
During the past decade the garage door industry has embraced the ever-increasing popularity of sectional garage doors leading to the demise of the one piece garage door.

But what did we do before sectional garage doors? Well, the old traditional one piece door was standard for years. A one piece door is a solid leaf that swings up and kicks out when you open it up and close it. Not long ago, the solid one piece doors where the industry standard and the idea of a sectional garage door was mostly seen in commercial facilities only.

So the question is - why are sectional garage doors, now seen as the optimum solution for garages and what has led to the demise of the one piece door?

Firstly, unlike the traditional one piece that was not draught proof, the sectional garage door can be insulated and draught proof.

There is no need to worry about space or clearance when pulling up to the garage in a vehicle. A sectional garage door is hinged in three or 4 places and opens vertically in sections allowing for greater room in the driveway.

Opening vertically their design allows for maximum headroom within the garage unlike the reduced headroom with a one piece door, ideal installation for 4x4s and MPVs.

One piece doors were not well regarded for their rigidity and security in nature. Security however is inherent at every stage of the more modern sectional garage door design.

Mark McEvoy of Garage Door Systems adds
“Many reasons can be attributed to the transition from the older one piece garage door to the sectional garage door, not least of all progress. The sectional garage door operates vertically allowing full use of the driveway, plus there is also enhanced security with the door sections.”

“In a more energy conscious environment there are the additional benefits of insulation. The UK garage door market also required buy in from the specialist base who would be installing this NEW type of door. Today the sectional garage door has carved out a significant installation base within the UK assisting garage door specialists win additional sales and helping establish itself as the new norm.”

Ultimately the demise of the one piece door was destined from the beginning. Customers have demanded more, and value the added benefits a sectional garage door has to offer.

Dying for a drink?

Road safety charity the IAM is offering weekly motoring tips from Britain’s top advanced driver, Peter Rodger.

This week, he is giving advice on avoiding the consequences of intoxication behind the wheel this Christmas time.

Peter said:
“This time of year brings with it brandy pudding, mulled wine and Christmas parties. If you’re heading out for a few drinks, make sure you have planned your journey home before you set off.”

Here are some tips on driving over the Christmas period:

  • Don’t try and calculate whether or not you have consumed enough to tip you over the drink-drive limit.
  • Drinks poured at home are usually larger than pub measures – don’t underestimate how much you’ve had.
  • If you drive to a party and drink more than you expected to, don’t risk it. Book yourself a taxi or arrange for a friend or family member to collect you.
  • If you are involved in a road accident you will be breathalysed – don’t risk it, or somebody else’s mistake could become your problem.
  • A drinking session the night before can easily put you over the legal limit the following morning. Organise alternative travel plans for the next day.
  • If you know someone has been drinking, don’t let them give you a lift or drive home.

Peter continued:
“A swift couple after work or a glass of wine with the staff lunch may seem harmless, but could have serious consequences if you get behind the wheel. It is not only about your safety, but the safety of other road users too.  It’s not worth the risk, so choose one or the other – to drink or to drive.”

* Mike McAdam, founder of drink drive campaign ‘Don’t be that someone’ said:
“It's important that people of all ages, including 14-18 year olds, are fully aware about the dangers and serious consequences drink driving can have on individuals, families and whole communities."

To help drivers stay safe this winter, the IAM has launched a new website, www.drivingadvice.org.uk, with traffic updates, weather forecasts and tips on how to drive safely in winter.

Tips cover rain, snow, ice, fog and wind – everything you can expect in a typically unpredictable British winter. Check it out before you travel.

FORD FOCUS ST ESTATE DECLARED TOP GEAR’S HOT HATCH OF THE YEAR

Top Gear magazine has crowned the Ford Focus ST estate Hot Hatch of the Year in its January edition out now.

In reaching the verdict, Top Gear took the 250PS Ford Focus ST to Russia, where the roads in and around Moscow proved the hot hatch’s combination of everyday practicality with scintillating performance in all conditions – even the Russian winter.

“Despite knobbly winter tyres, this front-drive, estatey hatch with no mechanical diff simply won’t understeer,” wrote Top Gear’s Matthew Jones, who drove a Colorado Red example 300 miles between Red Square and Chekhov.

“This isn’t an official metric, but in mildly moist conditions it’ll corner until the passenger window gets smeared with a photographer’s face. The ST estate really is a car for every mood, journey and road.

“It’s a beautifully set up car, and when conditions allow, it’s nothing but breathy, with progressive acceleration, comfortable but pin-sharp steering, and incorrigible handling. And the estate gathers up the best bits of so many niches.”

On sale in both estate and five-door bodystyles since July, almost 1,600 have sold – representing five per cent of overall registrations for the Ford Focus, which is the UK’s second best-selling car behind the Ford Fiesta. Ford Focus ST outsells the Golf GTi by more than two to one.

The 154mph estate, capable of 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds, is Ford’s first global performance car. Yet its turbo-charged, direct-injection 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine returns 39mpg while delivering CO2 emissions of 169g/km.

Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain managing director, said: “Our new and exciting Ford Focus ST estate breaks the hot hatch stereotype, which can mean compromising on space and everyday comfort. Top Gear recognised that the ST estate delivers on practicality and performance – as well as on price.”

The new Ford Focus ST range starts from £21,995 for a five-door and £23,095 for an estate.

Dorma Seek Styling Chosen for Ferrari

Minimalist surroundings, key lighting levels and DORMA’s sliding glass doors, patch fittings and reliable floor springs ensured that the elite refit of the Ferrari Showroom in South Kensington, proved a fitting platform to highlight its sophisticated range of cars.

Incorporating all the key elements that are synonymous with the world’s most famous and iconic car brand, the refit of the HR Owen Showroom involved a complete refurbishment together with a replacement shopfront.

EHW Architects specified the DORMA AGILE 150 sliding door system to provide a sleek modern finish to the spacious 810m2 showroom. In keeping with the minimalist aesthetics of the modern interior, the AGILE track which measures only 63mm high, was completely concealed in the ceiling to ensure a contemporary design.

Due to the special track roller technology, the system has very little friction guaranteeing ease of operation in both opening and closing cycles, satisfying Class 3 of the BS EN 1527 standard for sliding door systems. The maintenance free carriers also incorporate effective door stops ensuring that the doors are gently de-accelerated, protecting them against accidental slamming. With the flexibility of its modular design, the DORMA AGILE 150 is the right choice for use in a space which is both of high specification and accessible to members of the public.

For peace of mind, always choose a CE marked product from a DHF member supplier

Are you specifying industrial doors and shutters? Then it is important you choose CE marked products from suppliers that are members of the Door & Hardware Federation. This gives peace of mind that the product has been checked to ensure it complies with all relevant regulations. You do not have to check compliance (but a check does need to be made to ensure it complies with Building Regulations). Nor will any risk assessments have to take place (except by the building owner or user). Choosing a CE marked product from a DHF Member Company will absolve you from any legal liability in the future arising from non compliance issues. It also helps protect your client against litigation in the event of an accident occurring.

You need to be aware that the legislative landscape surrounding CE marking is changing. Here we outline the benefits of understanding the implications of CE marking of industrial doors and shutters.

At its simplest, a CE mark on a product is a legal declaration by a manufacturer that the product meets the essential health and safety requirements specified in the relevant legislation. This means a CE mark can be accepted as evidence that the product will perform as stated in its declaration of performance.

In some cases, CE marking is compulsory and has been for a number of years. This is true in the case of powered industrial doors. All powered doors manufactured and supplied by DHF member companies are CE marked under the Machinery Directive.

Non-fire doors can be CE marked under the Construction Products Directive (CPD). Voluntary CE marking under this directive has been possible since 2004. Indeed, many DHF members already CE mark under this scheme to give health & safety and environmental assurance to their customers (amongst other product-specific assurances such as thermal performance and wind/water penetration).

Architects and specifiers need to be aware that from July 2013, it will become a legal requirement to place CE marks on all industrial doors except for fire shutters.

This means that by choosing a DHF company rather than a non member company, the specifier is assured that CE marking obligations have been met.

The new Construction Products Regulation (CPR) sweeps away the current voluntary CE marking under CPD and CE marking will start to become compulsory. No industrial door can be placed on the market without a CE mark.

The architect or specifier would need to spend some time acquiring the necessary understanding of the the legal obligations surrounding CE marking. However, by ensuring every CE marked industrial door or shutter is supplied by a DHF member, the specifier has peace of mind regarding compliance.

There are other benefits, too, in choosing a DHF member company. In particular, the specifier is assured that every DHF member company abides by the DHF’s stringent Quality Assured technical standard of capability, customer service and quality. These are further backed up by DHF members’ adherence to a Code of Conduct governing members’ standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety and business integrity. And there is a guarantee that the product will meet the performance levels stated in the declaration of performance.

So the message to architects is clear: for peace of mind, always choose a CE marked product from a DHF member supplier.

Dual Way Anti – Barricade Door System

The Dual Way Anti – Barricade Door System, designed and manufactured by Cooke Brothers, is a purpose made doorset solution designed specifically to address the needs of today’s challenging mental health and custodial environments, where the risk of ligature or self harm are prevalent.

The Dual Way Door System provides unrestricted and immediate access into a room in a situation where a patient has barricaded himself or herself in.

The Dual Way Door System is suitable for either new build or for retrofit applications where individual doorsets are required within an existing facility. The Dual Way system utilises a frame within a frame principal, allowing for a standard 44mm or 54mm doorset to be mounted within a secondary high security steel outer frame.

In everyday use the standard inward opening doorset operates as a normal door, providing full 90-degree access using a purpose designed full height Anti-ligature continuous hinge. The outer frame preformed steel frame provides rigid support and security by means of heavy duty purpose design mechanical hook bolt locking or with the option of an electronically powered locking system

In an emergency or barricaded door situation the doors and inner frame can be quickly released enabling the complete doorset to swing outwards allowing immediate access into the room. Access is achieved by releasing the dual hook locks mortised into the outer frame and operated by unique security profile keys.

The Dual Way Anti-barricade system has been designed to suit the majority of standard 44mm and 54mm doorsets, including both FD30S AND FD60S options where required. The Dual Way system is adaptable to accommodate alternative door thickness subject to special order. The steel frame can be supplied in a range of standard finishes or with the choice of special options to suit specific requirements.

Outer and inner frames are secured with two purpose-designed heavy duty mortise hook bolts, which are supplied complete with anti tamper escutcheons and dedicated security keys. Alternative electronic locking systems can be supplied subject to client specification. A wide range of matching Anti-Ligature door furniture and high security mortise locks are available to meet exacting specifications or Dual Way can be supplied ready to receive existing ironmongery.

The Dual Way system incorporates unique Interleaf continuous hinges, which incorporates anti-ligature end tips and provides a minimal gap between the door and frame. The full height continuous hinges provide even weight distribution and substantially increased strength over pivoted doorsets, eliminating the potential for splitting under impact or during abuse. The Dual Way system is designed for use with the concealed frame mounted door closing devices.

For further information on the DUALWAY Door System please contact the sales team at Cooke Brothers Ltd on 01922 740011. Email: sales@cookebrothers.co.uk or visit our web site www.cookebrothers.co.uk
