ADSA Sponsors Industry Award

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is sponsoring the best in electronic product design and innovation at the AI Specification Awards for a second time.

The biennial even is organised by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and will take place in April 2024.

ADSA is encouraging manufacturers of entrance solutions – automatic doors, turnstiles, fast lanes and related products – to enter the category before the cut-off date on 1 December 2023.

The Product Design and Innovation – Electronic Award 2022 was won by Strand Technologies for its Virtual Engineer product, a technology solution for the control and diagnostics of automatic doors, gates and barriers.

The category celebrates “products which use new design concepts to improve product solutions”. It is open to “any new products which utilise electronics within the context of architectural ironmongery”.

To enter, projects or products must have been completed or released on the market between 1 October 2021 and 30 September 2023.

Each category will have a first, second and third placing. The judges will also decide on an overall ‘Winner of Winners’. Entries should be submitted online at www.aispecificationawards.co.uk

Said Ken Price, Managing Director of ADSA:
“We are delighted to once again sponsor the Product Design and Innovation – Electronic Award. The nature of our industry lends itself to practical problem-solving utilising electronic engineering and design application. Innovation within the industry became very prevalent during the COVID crisis when existing products were adapted and new products created to address national requirements.
“We are now at a stage where we are able to move on from this, applying that same enterprising spirit to improve building flow and management.”

For further information about ADSA email: rachel@adsa.org.uk or telephone: 01827 216136.

The Autumn / Winter Issue of Door Industry Journal is available online now!

With Christmas less than a month away, that can only mean one thing… The Autumn / Winter edition of the DIJ is here!

We’ve spent the last month preparing the content for this issue and, as we went to press, I think it was one of the few days recently without any rain! That’s in stark contrast to the hot and dry conditions when working on the Summer Issue.

As for the outlook in our industry, I would say it’s looking reasonably bright. Despite uncertainty in the building industry, the sector is, generally speaking, holding up quite well. There is plenty of growth and activity, certainly, if this issue is anything to go by.

To find out what’s going on, take a look inside at the plethora of stories from across the sector:

Here are a few highlights:

  • Jewers Doors the aircraft hanger door specialists celebrate 40 years in business (p 6)
  • Celebrating the life of Roy Chamberlain – of Chamberlain Doors – who has sadly passed (p 8)
  • All the information you need on the Secured by Design initiative (p 24)
  • Ellard’s journey towards de-carbonisation (p 28)
  • How ThermoSecure is raising its production game thanks to new investment (p 60)
  • Alucorb is travelling the country to spread the word about its partnership with gate manufacturer HorizAL (p 90)
  • IN2 Access announces a distribution partnership with Sweden’s Comlink (p 94)
  • Kirk Smith, of Allegion UK, explains how a door becomes a fire door (p 104)
  • Squire launches a new smart security system for remote control access (p 116)

That lot - and everything else packed inside - should keep you going over the festive break!

As ever, thank you to all our readers, advertisers and contributors for your support throughout 2023.

Why UV Testing for Doors is Increasingly Important to Avoid Costly Remediation Years Later

For building components exposed to the elements, such as doors, more and more, housebuilders are seeking assurances that these products meet the highest standards and have undergone rigorous testing to make their properties stand out against the crowd.

Daisie Lane, Application Sales Engineer at Element Materials Technology, explains:

“While weathertightness and security testing is expected as standard, there is another layer of testing that can protect against a somewhat invisible issue, ultraviolet (UV) rays.”

According to recent data, England needs 340,000 new homes, including 145,000 affordable homes, before 2031 to meet current demand1.

Between January and March 2023, there were 45,050 new homes built across the UK2 and the pace has to be maintained to iron out the UK’s housing crisis.

However, it’s crucial that these houses are not just thrown together too as otherwise, it becomes a costly exercise for housebuilders to fix later down the line, both from remedial works and reputation.

Now more than ever, housebuilders are seeking reassurance that the products they use in new homes are built to last.

Housebuilders will be well versed in the importance of having reassurances upfront before working with any product.

Doors are often the first point of security for many homes and so professionals will understandably seek evidence that all doors are tested in line with the appropriate industry standards.

While weathertightness and security are often the main areas that are considered when purchasing doors, the issue of UV rays is continually overlooked throughout the industry.

Even though the human eye cannot detect them, UV rays can cause substantial damage to doors.

UV radiation exposure can lead to colour change, reduction in gloss levels, cracking, crazing, chalking, blistering, hazing or complete product failure in relatively short periods of time.

Any product which has intermittent exposure to natural light, even indoors behind glass or which is exposed to fluorescent light, should undergo some form of UV testing.

Doors are a prime example of where this degradation can occur, as a result of the effects of sunlight on the material that the door is made from.

UV testing: how does it work?

To reproduce the impact of ultraviolet radiation exposure, accelerated UV testing can be conducted in a controlled laboratory environment.

The process uses a combination of intense UV, heat, and moisture to test materials and components for degradation.

To give housebuilders and homeowners complete peace of mind, it’s vital to find industry experts with the right laboratories and testing equipment to ensure the process is as accurate as possible.

Specialist laboratories, such as Element Materials Technology’s Wednesbury laboratory, can perform a wide range of UV tests with programmable temperature, humidity and irradiance, including Xenon Arc and Fluorescent QUV, as well as testing that mimics outdoor exposures experienced in Florida and Arizona, where the climate is more extreme.

The laboratory can also perform assessments pre- and post-test, and at various intervals.

These include colour and gloss measurements, weight, AATCC Greyscale readings, as well as mechanical, impact and strength testing, to give a comprehensive picture of a product’s performance and provide a deeper understanding of a material’s behaviour.

Usually, technical standards will detail out test durations, but would depend on factors such as the location of the door, the face being tested and whether it is in direct or indirect sunlight.

Supply chain advantages

Ultimately, UV testing provides housebuilders and door manufacturers with vital data quickly, and this data may otherwise have taken years to gather via customer feedback.

The information generated from testing is enormously valuable and beneficial in terms of product design, quality assurance and any potential liability issues, as well as allowing manufacturers to sell products as superior in terms of performance and durability.

Not only this, but these tests give a certain amount of protection against reputational damage and potentially costly remediation with homeowners in the future.

UV testing also benefits door manufacturers who can avoid any potential product recalls for insufficient product standards in the future.

In such a saturated market, being able to declare strength under the duress of UV light reinforces customer confidence and demonstrates that UV testing is an excellent way to stand out from competitors.

Doctor Who's futuristic Whomobile, Bessie and original Dalek at Beaulieu for 60th anniversary display

The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu is set to transport visitors through time and space with the unveiling of a new temporary display featuring the most iconic vehicles from the beloved British sci-fi series, Doctor Who.

From the sleek and stylish Bessie to the futuristic Whomobile and a menacing Dalek, this collection marks the 60th anniversary of the series and will open to visitors from 23rd November 2023.

Heading the line-up is none other than Bessie, the Third Doctor's trusty yellow roadster. Bessie’s first appearance was in Doctor Who and the Silurians in early 1970 and appeared regularly with the Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee.

It also made single appearances in Fourth, Seventh, Eighth and Eleventh Doctor stories. Familiar to fans of the classic era, Bessie has become synonymous with the Doctor's adventures.

Zooming in from the 1970s, the display presents the Whomobile, a custom-designed vehicle created for the Doctor by the brilliant minds at UNIT, the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. A sleek blend of style and functionality, the Whomobile is a testament to the Doctor's ability to traverse the cosmos.

It made its first appearance in Invasion of the Dinosaurs broadcast in January and February 1974. The vehicle’s only other appearance was in Planet of the Spiders, which was the final adventure for Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor and would see him regenerate as Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor.

Finally, adding an element of menace to the display is an authentic Dalek, the iconic extraterrestrial villains that have been striking fear into the hearts of Doctor Who fans for decades. The Dalek on display appeared in all but one of the classic Doctor Who Dalek episodes.

The National Motor Museum is thrilled to provide a rare opportunity for fans to witness the intricacies of Dalek design up close, as visitors will be able to come face to eyestalk with one of the Doctor's most formidable foes.

Beaulieu’s Lord Montagu is an avid ‘Whovian’. He was a founder member of the Doctor Who Restoration Team, a group of fans instrumental in restoring old episodes recovered from various sources in less than perfect condition.
He said: ‘I am delighted to be hosting this display of Doctor Who props in the programme’s 60th anniversary year. I am sure it will bring great joy to our visitors and bring back memories of watching the Saturday evening episodes, perhaps for some from behind the sofa.’

The display can be seen until the end of February 2024 and is included in a general admission ticket to Beaulieu.

This includes entry to the National Motor Museum, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, Palace House, Secret Army exhibition, Beaulieu Abbey, its grounds and gardens including adventure play area Little Beaulieu, plus unlimited rides on the Monorail and Veteran Bus.

Visit www.beaulieu.co.uk for more information and to book tickets.

Top tips for staying safe whilst working in bad weather

As the UK enters the winter months, many tradespeople will be forced to work in difficult weather conditions or delay jobs until the forecast improves.

Research by IronmongeryDirect found that the average tradesperson loses £1,300 per year due to bad weather and misses an average of a week of work annually.

Amongst the trades that are impacted by bad weather, the most are plumbers, who lose £1,723 per year, electricians, who lose £1,570, and builders, who miss out on £1,548.

Whilst it can be tempting to avoid delays and losing money by working through bad weather, it’s important to ensure that the safety of yourself and others is prioritised.

For this reason, IronmongeryDirect has provided some expert tips to help you stay safe when working in bad conditions.

1. Monitor the weather

You should ensure that you’re constantly keeping an eye on the weather to determine what kind of work you can do safely.

For example, if there’s a thunderstorm you should prioritise jobs that can be done indoors to avoid getting caught in the rain. Similarly, in heavy rain, it is important to avoid work where slippery surfaces can pose a health risk.

Working in an exposed position without any kind of protection or shelter can be a serious hazard, so it’s important to ensure that you’re monitoring the conditions and adjusting your work accordingly.

2. Avoid working at height

Most types of bad weather can make working at height particularly dangerous, so it’s important that you avoid these types of jobs in bad conditions.

Whether it’s high wind making it more unstable to work on exposed positions at height, or heavy rain creating slippery surfaces that are more dangerous to stand or walk on, jobs lower to the ground are safer during bad weather.

3. Be aware of your surroundings

Building sites are hazardous at the best of times, and potential risks increase in the bad weather. When you’re working and exposed to the elements, ensure that you’re aware of potential hazards that could be around you.

Check to see if scaffolding or equipment is secure and not posing a danger to you or anyone else, keep an eye out to see if any tools or materials could pose a tripping hazard and remove them if so. You should also try to be aware of other people or activities going on around you so you can safely avoid them.

4. Secure loose materials and equipment

In high winds and heavy rain, loose materials and equipment can pose a serious risk if they aren’t properly secured.

In bad weather, unsecured items can move around and potentially cause disruption to a work site, which could result in either additional time spent clearing up and replacing the materials, or in the worst case, they could pose a danger to yourself or others on site.

5. Don’t hesitate to stop

Weather can progressively get worse as the day goes on, and what may have started out as workable conditions may deteriorate to a point where it is no longer safe to continue working.

If this happens, then it’s important to call a halt to working outdoors until the weather improves. Whilst a delay to work is never desirable, it’s always better than having to deal with a disastrous situation that occurs from choosing to continue working in bad weather.

For more information about the research, visit: www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk

New Business Support Offered to Installers affected by Safestyle UK Collapse

Door-Stop International has stepped in after warning that the livelihoods of hundreds of skilled installers have been put at risk in the wake of Safestyle UK’s collapse.

Administrators for Safestyle have said the business has made around 680 of its workers redundant after it fell into administration at the end of October, but that does not include many self-employed fitters who rely on the firm to supply their customers with doors.

In this time of uncertainty, Door-Stop is providing any affected self-employed installers with dedicated business support to help restore a stable pipeline of work.

Those previously working with Safestyle UK can access new short term finance solutions so that they can order, install and receive payment for doors before having to pay Door-Stop, helping to maintain a healthy cashflow while in the process of securing future work.

Mark Young, commercial director of Door-Stop, said:
“These skilled fitters are the lifeblood of the door and window industry. Maintaining a consistent pipeline of work is crucial for them and so we are stepping in with short-term economic support and fast-tracked supply.
“Ensuring installers can continue to trade with confidence should be a major priority for all connected with the door and window supply and fitting industry. Door-Stop is determined to play its part.”
To help get set up as quickly as possible, they will also have access to Door-Stop’s Sales Manager software. The online door designer and order tool can be added to existing websites to make it easier for the installer’s customer to design, price, and pay for a door. It is fully customisable so the installer can have control over the information needed, the product ranges on offer, the payment process and more.

Fitters utilising Door-Stop’s business support offering will have access to exclusive pricing for a limited range of doorsets. With various door styles, colours and glazing options available from Door-Stop’s top sellers, installers will be able to offer on-trend styles at a competitive price. Its 10-day lead time means that they can continue to meet current demand without too much disruption to project timelines.

Installers who would like to learn more about the business assistance can contact Door-Stop on 01623 446336, option 4.

ZEROplus Explain the Importance of Fitting Silicone Door Seals

Leading door hardware supplier ZEROplus highlights the many benefits of fitting silicone seals to your doorsets.

From drafts, water ingress, heat loss, smells, noise, fire and smoke, a correctly fitting silicone seal forms a tight seal between the frame and the door, offering excellent all-round protection to your building.

And with their entire range of silicone seals being successfully bi-directionally fire and smoke tested to BS EN 1634-1 and BS EN 1634-3, respectively, you can confidently fit their seals to steel and timber fire-rated doorsets.

As we move into the colder months, many homes and businesses will consider how to keep their buildings warmer and more energy efficient.

Mark Lockley, Managing Director of ZEROplus, explains:
‘It’s estimated that the average home loses 15% of its heat through its doors, so it makes sense that your doors should be one of the first things you consider when tackling heat loss. With the current cost of energy, commercial and residential buildings will benefit from having seals fitted to external doorsets.
‘Not only will silicone seals help keep your space warmer, but fitting good-quality silicone seals around the inside edge of your door frames will also help reduce your energy bills’.

Whether for your windows or doors, silicone rubber seals are incredibly versatile. Suitable for most glazing and door designs, silicone seals are also very UV light and sunlight-aging resistant, making them exceptionally durable. They also offer excellent resistance to acid, oil, gasoline, animal/vegetable oils, water absorption, oxidation, ozone, heat ageing and flame.
Mark continues: ‘Along with being durable and long-lasting, silicone seals perform well in all kinds of weather conditions. The mechanical properties of silicone door seals mean they perform well in all weathers and from high to low temperatures. With superb insulation properties, silicone seals are also water and moisture-repellent, helping to keep your building warm and dry.’
The entire range of self-adhesive silicone seals from ZEROplus has also been successfully assessed and fire-rated for use on insulated or uninsulated fire-rated timber and steel doors.

Depending on the construction of your door, the fin and teardrop seals provide fire protection for up to 240 minutes, achieving BS EN 1634-1 and offering fire protection regardless of the direction of the exposure.

So whether your doors open towards or away from the risk of fire, their seals provide the fire and smoke protection you need. Their entire range of silicone seals also prevents the passage of cold smoke and has achieved BN EN 1634-3.

Comp Door Announce Christmas Giveaway to Mark One-Year Partnership Anniversary

Staffordshire composite door manufacturer Comp Door, a leading innovator in the door and window industry, is approaching the one-year anniversary of their partnership with Global Windows, which began in January 2023.

To mark the milestone, the two companies are thrilled to be collaborating on a Christmas giveaway that will provide one winner a new composite door provided by Comp Door, and installed by Global Windows. The giveaway is open to all South Yorkshire homeowners, and is being held on Global Windows’s Facebook page.

The partnership between the two businesses began when Global Windows started noticing an increasing number of problems with the standard, foam-filled composite doors that are widely available on the market.

Impressed by Comp Door’s auto slam shut design and solid timber cores, and their attentive customer service, Global Windows decided to make them their new supplier. Now, after a year of successful collaboration, the companies have found the ideal way to celebrate the partnership and give back to the South Yorkshire community.

The exciting giveaway of a Comp Door door encourages people to nominate friends, family, or even themselves to receive a free door as a gesture of goodwill after what has been a tough year for many. This initiative seeks to demonstrate gratitude to the two companies’ customers, aligning with their shared values.

To enter the giveaway, participants must visit Global Windows's Facebook page, click on the giveaway post and fill out the relevant submission form. Entries will close on the 24th of November, with plans to install the lucky winner’s door in the first week of January.

Managing Director of Global Windows Liam Hulme commented on the partnership with Comp Door and the Christmas giveaway, explaining:
“Global Windows's core business values align seamlessly with Comp Door's commitment to customer satisfaction. We focus on products that are simple for our customers to operate while providing the highest quality, ensuring ease of use and security. This was provided with Comp Door's auto-lock feature and the durable design of the door.
“The communication and support provided by Comp Door, from literature to showroom assistance, were huge factors in making the partnership decision, and that decision has absolutely paid off. With Christmas coinciding with our partnership’s anniversary, a door giveaway seemed like the perfect way to celebrate and pay our goodwill forward to the people of South Yorkshire.”
Richard Diliberto, Comp Door’s Sales Director, also said of the collaboration,
“The customer is always the highest priority for Comp Door and Global Windows, which is why our partnership has been so successful. As a family-run business that has served South Yorkshire for more than two decades, Global Windows really cares about their community, and that’s something that strongly resonated with the Comp Door team, so we were onboard with the Christmas giveaway instantly. I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved so far, and I’m looking forward to what more we can accomplish in the future.”
To find out more about the exciting Christmas giveaway, you can go to Global Windows’ Facebook page where you will find the terms and conditions and additional information.

Former Front Cover ‘Star’ Heads to Auction

A former Classic & Sportscar magazine cover, the restored 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230SL, will be offered for sale by H&H Classics at its Pavilion Gardens, Buxton auction on 29 November.

With an estimated value of £60,000 - £70,000, the stunning vehicle combines classic elegance with modern functionality, making it a prized lot for collectors.

The rare right-hand drive Pagoda is notable not only for its extensive restoration by marque specialist, Silchester Garage, but also for its appearance on the front cover of the April 2009 issue of Classic & Sportscar magazine.

“With such an impressive pedigree and history, we expect to see a great deal of interest in this wonderful motorcar,” adds Jones. “It really is a stunning vehicle that is ready to be enjoyed and cherished by its next owner”.
The car will be sold completed with a copy of its Classic & Sportscar magazine feature, a car cover, and a collection of sundry paperwork.
