1960 Bentley S2, owned by guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for The Kinks, is up for auction

A 1960 Bentley S2, owned by legendary rhythm guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for The Kinks, Sir Ray Davies, will go under the hammer at Silverstone Auctions’ May Sale, taking place at Silverstone circuit on 13th May.

The car was bought by Sir Ray in 1970 after the Kinks’ single Lola went to Number 1 in the charts around the world. He was persuaded by his family to invest in a big car, unusual for him as he didn’t actually drive at the time, in fact he didn’t start driving until he was 44 years old!

The Bentley has been in long-term storage since 1991 and now requires
some restoration work. It is offered for auction,
estimated at between £25,000 and £30,000.
“I succumbed to the pressure and purchased a second hand Bentley from Hadleigh Green Garage in Barnet. My then wife drove it on my behalf because I was unable to drive at the time,” said Sir Ray.
“We lived in a little semi in Muswell Hill and the neighbours were in shock and awe when they saw this huge black Bentley drive up along the narrow shingle path to the house. We subsequently went on holiday in the Bentley to Cornwall, an exotic spot in England which was our family outing with my two daughters in the back with their buckets and spades.”
It was also in this very car that Sir Ray wrote the follow up
to the hit single Lola, Apeman.

It was also in this very car that Sir Ray wrote the next single after the hit Lola as he explains: “While on our holiday in Mullion in Cornwall I sat in the back seat of the Bentley and wrote a follow up to Lola called Apeman on a Spanish guitar which I carried in the back.”

Not only that but The Kinks used the car in a photo shoot for the Preservation album and it still exists in some old black and white footage of the band posing as gangsters outside KONK studios in London. It was even used occasionally as a tour bus by the band.

The Kinks occasionally used the car as a tour bus.

“When I moved to Surrey in the 70s the car came down with me, I still could not drive, I had never driven the car which gives it some element of Kudos. It was occasionally taken out for special events like weddings and family outings. The Kinks took it once on the road in England but the fans started writing on the car with lipstick and our then manager Ken Jones promptly retired my car to the garage," added Sir Ray.
The Bentley has been in long-term storage since 1991 and now requires some restoration work. It is offered for auction direct from the ownership of Sir Ray, estimated at between £25,000 and £30,000.

Commenting on the sale of the car, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, Arwel Richards, said:
“It is rare to auction a car direct from rock royalty and this Bentley offers an incredible opportunity for rock ‘n’ roll fans and Bentley aficionados alike. At Silverstone Auctions we pride ourselves on offering unique and highly collectible cars like this for public sale.”

On the hunt for Britain’s Best Bacon Butty

The classic bacon sandwich is the breakfast of choice for our nation’s tradespeople, with new research suggesting it is their favourite secret indulgence.

A survey of 2,014 workers by leading ironmongery supplier, IronmongeryDirect, found that 72% of tradespeople agree the hearty sandwich is their workplace snack of choice. Yet, a third (30%) admit to enjoying the treat in secret and two fifths (41%) would fib to their partner about their snack and meal choices while at work.

But given the physical demands of their job, tradespeople are being urged to embrace their snacking habits and not be ashamed of what they’re really enjoying for breakfast.

To show that tradespeople really do earn their bacon, IronmongeryDirect is calling on the sector’s breakfast knowledge to help find Britain’s Best Bacon Butty.

Participants are being asked to nominate the butty establishment that serves the country’s best bacon sandwich - whether that’s a café, restaurant, hotel or roadside van.

Throughout the four-week hunt, all nominated locations will make it on to a dedicated Bacon Butty map, which will highlight where in the UK tradespeople can get their hands on the best bacon sandwiches. So, wherever they are on a job, they can make sure they start their day off in the right way.

Nominations can be made on the IronmongeryDirect website, Facebook page, www.facebook.com/IronmongeryDirect or on Twitter using the hashtag #BritainsBestButty.

Every person who enters a nomination will then be placed into a prize draw where they could win one of five £100 Amazon vouchers.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said:
“We all know that a tradesperson’s job can be physically demanding, so it’s important to kick-start the day with a hearty breakfast.
“And with bacon sandwiches being a classic breakfast choice for those on the go, we’re on the hunt for those breakfast heroes who provide the perfect sandwich to keep our nation of workers powering on throughout the day.”

ADIA in Partnership with CSCS

The ADIA have partnered with CSCS to give their members who have sat the BS EN16005, accredited by City & Guilds access to go on site.

This means their members who sit the BS EN16005 AND the Health and Safety test, will not have to complete other courses to go on site.

Below are details of the changes ADIA will be undergoing from 1st May 2017.

Why has this been done?

  • Engineers can go on site.
  • No additional courses need to be taken to gain CSCS card.

ADIA Health and Safety test

The ADIA have created an online ADIA Health and Safety course that engineers will need to complete before sitting the BS EN16005 course.

If an engineer has done their BS EN16005 and would like the new card, they must have completed this H&S test before a new card can be issued.

Trainees/Apprentices Card

This card will allow learners to go on site supervised by a qualified technician.  This card will be valid for 1 year and is not renewable.

Trainees will need to do the health and safety test before the card is issued and complete the BS EN16005 within the 12 months’ period.

The BS EN16005 Course and Exam

Once the ADIA Health and Safety test is completed, the engineer is then able to sit the BS EN16005 course and exam.

When they pass they will receive a card with the CSCS hologram as well as City & Guilds logo.

The accreditation lasts four years. After this, engineers will have to reapply to do a renewal exam and Health and Safety test.

Card Renewals and Replacements

Engineers with a card still in date, are not required to order a new card.

Engineers will have to complete this form  if they have:

  • a card that has expired,
  • lost their card or
  • Would like the new CSCS card (health and safety test must be taken before issue).

Cards are renewable annually.

Prices from 1st May 2017

  • ADIA Health & Safety Test and BS EN16005 Course and Exam – £450 + VAT

  • ADIA Health & Safety Test and BS EN16005 ALL ONLINE Course and exam – £350 + VAT

  • ADIA Health & Safety Test and Card Replacement (for those who have done BS EN16005 but want to replace their old card that isn’t CSCS ) – £85 + VAT

  • Card renewal/replacement – £60 + VAT (for those who have done the Health & Safety Test and BS EN16005 but require a new card)

  • Trainees/apprenticeship card and ADIA Health and Safety test – £150 + VAT (credited back to payee on BS EN16005 application)

All BS EN16005 courses will include the health and safety test and MUST be completed.

The ADIA hope you will welcome this development of the BS EN16005 and the opportunities it offers members. CSCS will be contacting thousands of businesses across the UK to let them know that BS EN16005 is now recognised.

Fuss-free installation with Hörmann’s range of timber internal doors

At the end of last year, the UK’s leading door manufacturer, Hormann, launched its first ever range of internal doors into the market. This diverse range of high-quality timber internal doors not only offer homeowners a range of stylish door leaves, but it comes as complete door sets to allow for quick and simple application onsite.

Whether modern or traditional, glass or timber, this diverse range of high-quality timber internal doors comes available with a choice of fixtures and fittings. This not only helps save the homeowners time sourcing parts, such as hinges, handles and architrave, it saves the cost of hiring a specialist joiner, making this way of buying a new door for their home one of the most cost effective and convenient.

With four distinct collections to choose from, this range of doors offers something for every style and budget. The BaseLine series has been designed with individuals that are looking to create a timelessly elegant finish in mind. The solid door leaf is available in either a flush or rebated version, as well as in five high-quality surface finishes: Duradecor smooth, Duradecor texture, Duradecor synchronous texture, plus real wood veneer and lacquer.

The DesignLine collection within this range offers those that want to create the door of their dreams the opportunity to do just that. With a variety of different style elements such as stainless steel embellishments or recessed grooves, to real wood veneer or paint, this collection satisfies the highest demands and helps add a sense of style to any room.

Both the BaseLine and DesignLine ranges are available in the high-quality Duradecor surface finish. Duradecor features heat and impact resistance, robustness and low levels of maintenance, making it one of the best performing internal door finishes on the market.

As well as this, both the BaseLine and DesignLine styles are available as apartment entrance doors and as TechnicLine doors with specialised equipment. Rated climatic class three and acoustic rated category two as standard, this model helps protect against noise and the cold from outside. All doors from the TechnicLine are available with RC2 security equipment, which includes a VX hinge, a 3-point locking system and a reinforced leaf frame, as well as other special features, such as a spyhole, a wide-angle camera with LCD display and a motor lock for extra peace of mind.

In addition to the DesignLine, BaseLine and TechnicLine doors, Hörmann has recently introduced two more styles into the range. ConceptLine models offer simple sophistication in eye catching gloss, ultra matt and slate surface finishes. The GlassLine series introduces full glass designs for the first time. Available in a choice of glazing options, the range instantly transforms any house by giving it a feeling of openess throughout each room, as well as a sophisticated and chic appearance.

Hörmann is world renowned for producing quality doors, and this latest range of timber internal doors is an example of just that. So, whatever your design challenge, Hörmann’s timber door range has something to match personal style choices perfectly.

NVM add Own Brand Direct Drives to their Motor Range

Direct Drives

North Valley Metal (NVM) – one of the UK’s longest serving door industry suppliers - has added its own brand of Direct Drive operators to its already extensive range of industrial door components and motors.

“It became obvious that, as a company, we needed to evolve with the industry and whilst we enjoy the privilege of being the UK’s largest supplier of industrial door components, we knew we had to add motors to our range,” explains Managing Director John Seymour.

“But it was also important for us not to compromise our reputation for quality by offering something that did not meet with our own and, more importantly, our customer’s expectations. We’ve heard many stories about quality issues in the industry and didn’t want to fall into that trap with our large and loyal customer base.”

Tube Motors
“We were very selective when choosing our suppliers,” John continues, “and since the launch of our first motor we now boast four ranges of tube motors to suit every application. We also offer a range of in-line/fire shutter motors, and a range of direct drive operators that encompass the long established M-Tech range of industrial operators, from 140nm to 1400nm - in both mechanical and digital electronic options - and high speed door motors from HSD specialists Ditec.”

In being so selective, NVM has ensured their suppliers provide a product that meets the company’s own standards of quality, reliability and functionality. To accompany the operators, NVM has also launched a 3 phase control panel that offers an array of built-in functions as standard, including manual switch, safety edge, photocell, auto-return and remote control. Panels and motors are installer friendly too, being supplied pre-wired and pre-plugged.

To find out more about the North Valley Metal product range call 01282 615239 or email sales@nvmgroup.co.uk  or visit www.nvmgroup.co.uk .

Alugate Brings State-Of-The-Art Aluminium Gates To The UK Market

Alugate - a leading name in the UK gate industry – is now offering the best in Italian manufacturing and technical excellence to gate installers across the country.

The company has the exclusive UK distribution rights to the range of gates made by Alutrend - an established Italian company that has been manufacturing aluminium products for over 40 years. Alutrend’s parent company, which was founded in 1974, manufactured and installed aluminium windows.

Later the firm diversified and developed new and innovative aluminium gates and associated products - and Alutrend was born. Alutrend continues to create high quality aluminium products that are made specifically for professional installers.

Alugate UK Managing Director Stewart Phillips believes that Alutrend is the best possible choice for any installers looking to offer aluminium gates:

“I have a background in the gate trade and had heard about the excellent reputation of Alutrend aluminium gates, so I began to look into the possibility of distributing them here,” he explains. “I was amazed when I first went to Italy to see the factory and the manufacturing process, as the level of care and attention they put into the production of each gate is phenomenal. That’s why I became determined to supply Alutrend products to the UK market – to give British installers access to aluminium gates that really are the best in the business.”

The gates supplied by Alutrend offer a distinct advantage over other aluminium gates as they are welded together, as opposed to being sectional, making them much stronger.

Also, all Alutrend gates are CE Marked – so, when combined with a CE Marked motor, the products used in the installation meet all legal requirements.

What’s more, because the gates are made from aluminium – they are not attacked by rust or rot and are much lighter than wooden, iron or steel gates, ensuring a longer life for both columns and automation equipment. In addition, the light weight enables larger gates to make better use of obstacle detection technology.

Alutrend gates also boast a considerable capacity to withstand the elements, thanks to a comprehensive treatment process. After assembly, the gates are sandblasted using two types of sand then washed and degreased with solvents and acids. They are then dried in a special oven, painted in the chosen colour using an electrostatic application of powder polyurethane, then oven-dried for a final time.

The result is a gate that can withstand even the most adverse weather conditions and needs no maintenance. All gates are backed by a 10-year insurance guarantee on the structure and coating.

The range distributed by Alugate includes wrought iron/steel style gates, modern steel style gates, contemporary slat gates and ranch style gates. Bespoke gates can also be created to a client’s specific requirements.
“These gates are really hitting the mark, with our network of installers across the country reporting increasing demand for them,” adds Stewart Phillips. “We are also looking for new installers to add to our network, so welcome any enquiries.”
To find out more about Alugate – and view the full range of Alutrend gates – visit www.alu-gate.co.uk call 0845 2588496 or email info@alu-gate.co.uk

Eight out of ten motorists have no idea about new speeding fine structure

More than eight out of every 10 British motorists are unaware of new speeding fines, which could see someone earning £50,000 pay a fine of £1000* for travelling 41mph in a 20mph limit, according to research carried out by leading consumer motoring website www.HonestJohn.co.uk

In a survey carried out by the website**, 84% of respondents said they didn’t know what the new sentencing guidelines – which come into force on Monday - meant, while more than half (56%) were completely unaware that the penalties for speeding were changing.

Under new rules laid out by the Sentencing Council, the changes mean that magistrates have the power to fine motorists by up to 150% of their weekly take-home income, while even minor offences can lead to fines of up to 50% of an offender’s weekly income. There will be a cap of £1,000 per offence, or £2,500 if it is committed on a motorway.

HonestJohn.co.uk’s Managing Editor, Daniel Powell, said:
“While most people agree that excessive speed has no place on our roads, and that greater deterrents are likely to reduce the amount of deaths and injuries related to speeding, the new fines policy appears to have entered the law almost unnoticed.”
The new speeding fine structure comes into force tomorrow Monday (April 24) and gives judges and magistrates the power to fine motorists up to 150% of their weekly income for the worst speeding fines, or up to 50% of their income for creeping over the limit, within 10mph of the prevailing maximum.

While the new rules set the bar for speeding fines, there are no plans to remove the option of Speed Awareness Courses for first time minor offenders. At present, those caught speeding by a small amount are frequently offered a half-day awareness course in lieu of points on their licence, with the courses costing the same as the equivalent fixed penalty. How these will be charged under the new system is as yet undefined.

“While the new fines are clearly a deterrent, the bigger issue here is that prevention is better than cure,” added Powell. “One very real concern is that, while speeding is easier to police, there are greater road safety concerns attached to driver distraction than creeping slightly over the speed limit.
“If sentencing guidelines for speeding are heading this way, then in an era of more connectivity behind the wheel, we should be addressing concerns around mobile phone use, in-car app and sat nav distractions in much the same way. Harsher fines are a deterrent, but we can’t help but think a better, more modern approach to driver education would have a greater influence on road safety.”

Urmet iPervoice stars at BBC Television Centre

Developers Stanhope plc are using Urmet’s open platform iPervoice door entry
system on an initial phase of 430 apartments and penthouses for visitor
announcement, system management by concierge staff, and lift control interface.

Urmet has added to its portfolio of heritage buildings with an installation at the world-famous former BBC Television Centre in White City, London.

The 14-acre complex is one of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks, with a frontage and statues that are known to television viewers around the world. Many features are Grade II-listed and will remain as part of the new residential, leisure and commercial complex.

Developers, Stanhope plc, are using Urmet’s open platform iPervoice IP door entry system on an initial phase of 430 apartments and penthouses for visitor announcement, system management by concierge staff and lift control interface.

Elekta glass entry panels have been specified to minimise visual impact on the iconic Fifties architecture. These panels have been fitted at 40 entrance points and connected over the Cat5e network allowing visitors to communicate with residents. The Elekta is a Power over Ethernet (PoE) panel that features a 3.5-inch colour display and allows both audio and video messages to be recorded.

The panel will also detect if a door has been left open and there is a duress function for anybody who feels under threat. At large sites, the panel can display a route map from the external entry gates to the selected residence. The Elekta features soft-touch controls and can be flush-mounted. Urmet also supplied a number of bespoke external posts for installing the panels in areas of Television Centre where the buildings have a glass-fronted or a curtain-wall exterior.

On certain panels in communal areas there are additional one-button call units for contacting the 24-hour concierge staff. These are from Urmet’s Sinthesi Steel range and feature a wide-angle 120° camera, vandal-resistant body and impact resistance to IK09.

In the apartments, residents respond to calls from the entrance panels and communicate with their visitors using Urmet’s newly launched MAX IP Android-powered touchscreen. This is a seven-inch tablet-style device that uses swipe and gesture conventions familiar to any smartphone user. The MAX IP has a 2-megapixel camera and a 1024x600 pixel screen.

Intelligent lift management

An important feature of the MAX IP is a lift icon that generates a signal to the lift interface when pressed. Residents can call the lift to their floor or send it to the ground level to receive a guest or delivery person – all without leaving their apartment. The lift occupant can only travel to the floor for which they have permission and they are prevented from visiting other levels. This function is a core requirement of Secured by Design (SBD), the official UK Police initiative that seeks to ‘design-out crime’ through physical security. Urmet is fully committed to SBD and was an early adopter of the scheme.

Television Centre also uses Urmet’s switchboard software, which allows concierges to manage calls, receive and create alarms, and send messages on a global, group or individual basis. The software simplifies these functions by presenting the concierge with an intuitive screen menu and empowers staff through an overall site awareness that contributes to resident safety. Concierges will work from a lobby formed from the original ‘stage door’ entrance to Television Centre.

App-based solution
“Urmet excels at populating our touchscreens with factory-controlled third-party apps for integration to home automation and network systems. This is a direction in which developers and installers want our sector to move and the trend was also emphasised by prospective end-users when they looked at the system in the marketing suite created by developers, Stanhope.” said Mark Hagger, Sales & Marketing Director at Urmet.
He continued: “Many of our projects involve door entry at sites that retain the original fabric of an historic building. Urmet’s unobtrusive designs allow architects to maintain period feel, but also empower residents with functionality. This is becoming one of the many strengths of the iPervoice system.”

After its opening by the Queen in 1960, the studios at White City created programmes ranging from Blue Peter to Children in Need for over fifty years, until 2012. Known from now on as Television Centre, the overall site covers 145 acres. The architect is London-based practice, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, which will retain components such as the Helios statue and mosaic work.

The recent Urmet installation is on the initial ‘Helios’ apartment block. The scheme will finally include 950 new homes, offices, restaurants, cafés, a cinema, shops, hotels and an additional campus for Imperial College. A piazza the size of Trafalgar Square will be created in the original frontage.

High class closing from Powermatic

Powermatic controlled, concealed door closers have been used to great effect on one of the newest apartment buildings to grace the banks of the River Thames.

Situated at Millbank and enjoying spectacular, unrestricted views of the Thames, Riverwalk House has been designed by award-winning architects Stanton Williams for Ronson Capital Partners.

Its architecture is inspired by the sinuous curves of the river as it winds past the site. The building’s gentle interlocking form creates an open aspect for the 116 residential apartments and penthouses, maximising natural light and internal space.

The high aesthetic quality of the building’s stunning limestone, bronze and glass exterior is continued inside; created by United Designers, the interior features a light, airy décor scheme, tastefully detailed with contrasting dark stained oak apartment doors and surrounding panels. This rich dark wood theme has been extended to apartment interiors, with concealed fittings allowing doors and panelling to be shown to their luxurious best.

Conscious of the need to retain this high-spec appearance to doors and interiors, Stanton Williams specified Powermatic concealed door closers for entrance doors to the individual residences. Doors were supplied and fitted by Ruddy Joinery, and mortices routed on site to accept the door closers, which were supplied by leading architectural ironmonger, Franchi plc.

Powermatic door closers are totally concealed when the door is closed and barely noticeable when the door is opened, although the polished chrome face plates selected for Riverwalk do ensure that, if seen, the door closers will complement the doors’ polished metal detail strips and other door furniture.

This concealment ensures that the appearance of the high quality dark wood doors and interior finishes is not spoiled by intrusive mechanical arms and control boxes that would be an unavoidable consequence of using surface mounted door closers.

Jason White of Stanton Williams comments,
“We chose the Powermatic concealed door closer as it meets the necessary fire and accessibility requirements and, just as importantly for this project, it is hidden from view when the door is closed, helping to retain a clean appearance to doors and interiors”

Specification Support Service from Yale

For social housing providers it is important to consider all the issues early during the specification process, as choosing robust, effective solutions from the outset can help to ensure a tenant’s feeling of trust and safety, whilst also reducing the need for costly call backs in the long-term.

Yale’s Specification Support Service offers the opportunity to take a detailed walk through the relevant legislation, standards and guidance, enabling housing providers and specifiers to make an informed choice.

John Pearl, Specification Manager for Yale, said:
“Yale’s Specification Support Service aims to help you make the right choices in window and door hardware. We’ll provide a clear and impartial guide to the issues you need to address, the legislative requirements that you must
meet and the products most suited to the application and environment in which they need to operate.
“You can rest assured that Yale’s extensive industry experience will help you find the best hardware solutions, for you and your residents.”

As the leading name in home security, Yale is able to provide expert guidance and advice on safeguarding residents and properties with its free RIBA accredited CPD seminars.

John adds: “With cumulatively over 36 years industry experience, each individual within our dedicated Specification team can successfully cover the wide range of topics required.
“We continuously review our RIBA accredited CPD seminars and are happy to present to groups, or on a one-to-one basis. Our service includes template specifications that can be tailored to the individual needs of your residents.”
As part of Yale’s commitment to its partners, the Partnership Pledge Plus offers an audited warranty scheme to housing providers who specify Yale’s hardware, including the austenitic stainless steel range. It has been designed to help ensure that the hardware specified, is that which is supplied and fitted.

Under the scheme, which involves no cost to either the fabricator or specifier, Yale will monitor individual contracts to ensure that the right components have been used and correctly installed. Additionally, site visits by the specification team will help to confirm that the most suitable ironmongery products are being used and that standards are maintained throughout the duration of the project.

Visits will also oversee any hardware issues that may arise during the installation process. Yale then provides a 15-year warranty direct to the housing provider on contracts where the specification has been met in full.

FIT Show 2017 reveals nearly 100 brand new exhibitors!

This year’s FIT Show is proving to be a massive hit with new exhibiting companies, who see the opportunities that they confidently expect will come from being present at one of the best trade shows in the business.

The show, which takes place at Birmingham’s NEC from 23rd to 25th May, has attracted no fewer than 99 new exhibiting companies, illustrating the huge interest it can generate within the industry.

FIT Show organisers are delighted that so many new companies have signed up to show off their products and services. Companies exhibiting for the first time include Alutech Systems and Gwent-based AluK, for whom – as their names suggest – aluminium lies at the heart of everything they do.

Door companies Longden Doors and Mexin Doors have both booked their spot for 2017, so too has the newly formed price comparison site for window prices for homeowners, Comparemywindows.com, as has sealants company European Chemical Industries.

The decision to move the show to the NEC has clearly proved popular with the industry, with its larger exhibition space and the added bonus of great facilities nearby, including bars, hotels, restaurants and health clubs.

The venue move, together with the thumbs-up from the industry, shows how the FIT Show is going from strength to strength.

And while remaining space is at a premium, there is still time to book a spot in which to showcase your product or service. But hurry, with all these new exhibitors coming on board, you’ll have to be quick!

Taking place 23-25th May 2017, to book a stand at FIT Show 2017 please contact Freya Humphries on: 07572 623457, or email: freya@fitshow.co.uk

To register as a visitor for FIT Show 2017 visit: www.livebuzzreg.co.uk/2017/fit17
