IN2 Access Develops Innovative Safety Edge Mounting Rails

Safety technology, sensing and automation suppliers, IN2 Access and Control Ltd, have revolutionised the appearance of safety edges on applications including gates, roller shutters, industrial, pedestrian and garage doors.

Specifically designed to complement Bircher’s leading safety edge system, IN2 Access have introduced innovative black anodised aluminium mounting rails to the marketplace.

The aluminium’s matt black finish offers a seamless, streamline appearance – eliminating the silver strip between an application and its essential electrical safety edge.

In the past, installers have been known to spray paint a black finish onto aluminium mounting rails. Not only does this method prove costly and time-consuming due to lengthy drying times, a sprayed-on coating is not an ideal long-term solution in harsh weather conditions.

Kane Tetley, a Director of IN2 Access and Control said:
“The addition of black anodised and our recent angled aluminium mounting rails not only enhances our options for the extensive range of reliable electrical safety edge products, but it gives a more aesthetically pleasing and seamless look, which can be easily retrofitted to existing installations.”

The anodising process used on IN2 Access and Control’s new mounting rails ensures the aluminium is protected using an oxide layer, which has a higher corrosion and abrasion resistance – increasing its durability and wear.

Black aluminium is available now with Bircher safety edge profiles using AP-S, AP-5, AP-8 and angled AP-G1-D20 mounting rails. Get in touch with the IN2 Access team on 01691 655150 or email sales@in2access.co.uk to request a free sample pack.

One Way Trip for 500 Cyclists

Leading garage door manufacturer Garador provided their giant 18 tonne delivery vehicles and drivers for a day to help get 500 cyclists riders and their bikes up to the north Somerset coast for the start of a major charity event.

The cyclists were taking part in the West Country’s challenging Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge to raise funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Thanks to Garador, all the bikes and riders were transported up to the right place at the right time for the start.

The Challenge covers a cycle route from the North coast of Somerset to the South coast of Dorset, and with so many participants, the logistics of making sure everyone started and ended safely with their bikes was enormous.

Bill Sivewright, Chief Executive of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, said Garador’s support for the day was a critical part of its success “We are very grateful to Garador for providing the vital cycle transport between the start and finish areas of the event,” he said. “Their support is really appreciated by riders who would struggle otherwise to even enter.

“We have received some fantastic comments from participants who have all agreed how well the event was organised and run on the day,” he added.

Yale Examines Future Smart Home Trends at FIT Show

Yale FIT Show stand 2017

Smart home security was the focus for Yale at this year’s FIT Show, and this was a decision that proved to pay off as the stand scooped the award for ‘Best Stand Under 80m2’ at the FIT Show Awards.

The security experts showcased their exciting range of connected security products on stand, as well as presenting a seminar slot which saw Neil Vann, Market Regional Manager at ASSA ABLOY UK, discuss future trends in home automation.

Paul Atkinson, Sales & Commercial Director for Yale, commented:
“We are already seeing significant interest in the smart security market as homeowners, housebuilders and retailers are beginning to recognise the benefits of being able to remotely access home security systems from anywhere in the world, via a smartphone or tablet. We see this as a revolutionary shift that is coming our way driven outside of our industry by the tech companies.
“We always support our customers at the FIT Show, however the main reason we decided to take a stand ourselves this year was to showcase our exciting range of connected security products, with the aim of inspiring our customers to consider how they can create business models taking advantage of this trend.”

Neil Vann, Market Regional Manager
 at ASSA ABLOY UK, discussing
future trends in home automation
Paul continues: “The appetite for smart products amongst homeowners provides fabricators, installers, retailers and housebuilders with an opportunity to invest in new door and window products that will open up lucrative new revenue streams and position their offering at the forefront.”

Yale, alongside Philips Hue and Samsung SmartThings, has been announced as a supporter of Smart Home Week – a new initiative designed to help Brits get to grips with the connected home, showcasing the very best in smart, connected and integrated home technology.

Launching 29th May 2017, Smart Home Week aims to help homeowners understand how they can update their homes for the better and get the most out of smart devices.

Paul adds: “This year’s FIT Show has been bigger and better than ever. The move to the NEC is a clear reflection of the growth that both the show itself, and industry as a whole, has experienced in recent years.
“It was great to see so many visitors through the doors across the three days. The FIT Show has provided us with the perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between the manufacturers and distributors of products, like us, and the companies and individuals that fabricate and install them. It also provided us with a great opportunity to network with our customers and potential new stockists, as well meeting face-to-face with key press contacts.
“We look forward to seeing you all at the next FIT Show in 2019!”

Aston Martin Vulcan Set To Fly at Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb

Aston Martin Vulcan

Shelsley Walsh: Aston Martin is set to fly up the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, as the iconic British brand has confirmed the attendance of the Aston Martin Vulcan at this year’s British Racing Green event on the 3rd  and 4th June.

In 1913, the race-prepared machines of company founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford were regularly seen taking to Britain’s earliest hill climb tracks including the Worcestershire venue. Fast forward 104 years and the company is returning to its roots with its highly exclusive  820- horsepower track car, limited to just 24 examples worldwide.

The event, which provides manufacturers with the opportunity to test their creations at the historic venue, is set to celebrate all things British, Racing and Green and evoke the spirit of British Racing Green.

With a number of new classes for this event, including an Electric, SUV, Autonomous, Estate and Hypercar class, some new history is set to be created.

Crowds can expect to see Vulcan take to the hill twice on each day, alongside the venue’s regular hill
climb competition and Midland Hill Climb Championship.

David King, Vice President & Chief Special Operations Officer said:
“Aston Martin began life racing at hill climb events across Britain and it’s a pleasure for us to bring the company back to one of its earliest venues of competition. Shelsley Walsh is an iconic venue in the world of motorsport and it will be an epic sight for those attending on the day. We look forward to putting on an entertaining show”.

Mark Constanduros, Shelsley Walsh said:
“This is fantastic news both Shelslely Walsh and Aston Martin have such strong links and to have Aston Martin support this new element to the event and to bring the Vulcan is superb. The brand is absolutely perfect and is what British Racing Green is all about”.

Shelsley Walsh’s British Racing Green takes place on the 3rd and 4th of June, with tickets available  from £16 with an advance booking at www.shelsleywalsh.com

About the Midland Automobile Club and Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill Climb

The club was established at The Grand Hotel in Birmingham on the 11th January 1901 by a number of prominent members of the early motor industry whilst Queen Victoria was on the throne and as such is arguably the oldest motor sport club in the world.

Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill Climb is the oldest motor sport venue in the world still in continuous use. It was first used in 1905 and still uses its original layout, although there are a few close rivals. The first speed event was held in 1901 on the edge of the rolling hills of the Cotswolds at Sun Rising Hill.

The club has always been innovative. In 1932, the BBC chose Shelsley Walsh for its first ever outside broadcast. Electronic timing was first introduced at Shelsley and in 1998 the club organised the first ever classic trial on the Isle of Man

The MAC hosts rounds of the British Hill Climb Championship, The Midland Championship and The Leaders Championship, with classes for a variety of cars from road going to full on specialist hill climb cars. The MAC also organises, sprints, sporting trials, classic car, and social events. The Midland Automobile Club features something for every motor sport and motoring enthusiast.

Safety Stems Success with Allgood Ironmongery and Doorsets

Allgood ironmongery and doorsets are helping to provide exceptional fire safety at the new state of the art science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) facilities at Kingston University, London.

The University, which has roots going back more than 100 years and has approximately 19,500 enrolled students, began construction of new public-facing science and technology facilities in the summer of 2016.

The construction of the new technology facilities, outreach space and laboratories at the University’s Penrhyn Road campus, which was aided by £1.9m in Government funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), are benefiting the general public as well as current and future students.

Replacing the former teaching rooms on the second and third floors of the main building, the new chemistry and pharmaceutics laboratories are providing students at the University – which celebrates its 25th birthday this year – with an ultra-modern environment packed with the latest state-of-the-art equipment.

As with any science laboratory, the consideration of safety was of paramount importance when it came it to specifying elements such as the doors due to the use of flammable, toxic and dangerous chemicals. Additionally, because of the amount of traffic through the STEM department and thus the doors’ regularity of use, the university felt that reliability and durability were integral when it came to the ironmongery.

As such, Allgood supplied 15 doorsets with traditional exposed lippings. The exposed lippings provide extra protection to the door faces and ensure they can be easily repaired and replaced if necessary. Along with the doorsets, Alite levers, latches, surface maglocks and hinges were installed, providing the laboratories with fire protection for up to 30 minutes.

The Alite ironmongery range developed specifically for use in busy commercial environments was ideal for the Kingston University STEM environment – providing a robust and hard wearing ironmongery solution.

Speaking of the specification of Allgood ironmongery and doors, Vice Dean of Kingston University’s Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing, Dr Lucy Jones said:
“One of the key aspects in the design brief for our cutting-edge new STEM facilities was ensuring we had a high level of fire safety within the laboratories and teaching spaces.
“Meeting rigorous fire safety requirements is so important in a STEM setting and the new facilities will significantly enhance our students’ learning experience. Allgood doorsets have helped us achieve this, with the company applying a special laminate finish to the laboratory doors to further boost fire door safety.”

The L167 Dark Grey Sonae laminate was not the only bespoke feature that Allgood provided for the project as Michael Thornton, Site Manager for subcontractor ITC Concepts, explains:
“Allgood supplied doors for the Kingston STEM project with apertures for the ironmongery ‘machined out’ in the factory.
“This offsite construction element was a huge benefit when it came to fitting the doors and saved us time and cost onsite. Speaking generally, Allgood was very efficient and timely - meeting build deadlines and providing support throughout the installation process”.

Adnan Latif, Specification Sales Manager at Allgood said:
“At Allgood, we strive to work closely with the end client, subcontractor and any relevant stakeholder, whenever possible, to ensure that the delivery and installation of our doorsets and ironmongery products is as smooth as possible.
“This was a really satisfying project for Allgood, with the new STEM facilities helping to significantly improve the learning experience of the Kingston University students.
“Through our doorsets and ironmongery, we are proud to have contributed to the safety of the state of the art laboratories and teaching rooms – helping to transform the learning environment for both current and future students at the university and encouraging uptake of STEM subjects.”

Visualise Your Door with Garador’s new Web App!

One of the UK’s leading manufacturers of garage doors have just introduced a new online tool, Visualise Your Door, which allows anyone with a computer and an internet connection to mock up a Garador door onto an image of their home.

The new online tool, aptly named Visualise Your Door, is easily accessed through the Garador website. It has been designed in such a way, so that any Garador garage door, in any colour variation can be selected to see what it looks like on an image of a house.

Simon Hipgrave, Managing Director of Garador explains:
“We’ve been working on the Visualise Your Door project for over a year now, it’s been something we really wanted to get right as we think it will be of real use to builders and homeowners looking for a new garage door.”
Simon continues: “Its great fun to use and we think people will really enjoy using it”
The door panel has four drag buttons, one at each corner of the door, making it quick and easy to position the door over the opening of your garage. From there it is just a case of flicking through door styles and colours, and with so many to choose from there are literally hundreds of door-colour combinations.

One really cool aspect is that Visualise Your Door works well on a tablet and a PC, which means that you can play around with garage door styles and colours, using a keyboard and mouse, or just your fingers on a tablet.

View the complete range of Garador garage doors and try the new Visualise Your Door tool online on the Garador website at www.garador.co.uk .

Sustainable Manufacturing Processes Ensure Environmental Integrity

Environmental integrity is becoming more measurable than ever before, and as a result, manufacturers must pay close attention to their sustainability credentials. Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, explores the environmentally friendly processes and practices adopted at ASSA ABLOY Security Doors.

The construction industry has a significant impact has upon the environment, accounting for 40% of the energy used, and this doesn’t even take into account the impact manufacturing has upon the process .

Brian Sofley
And yet there are significant opportunities for manufacturers to help the construction industry to mitigate its environmental impact, from the sourcing of raw materials, to the manufacturing process itself, and finally taking into account the product life cycle.

Responsible Resources

The UK is self-sufficient for many construction materials, but relies on certain metals, clays and coal to be imported. As quality sources are exploited, availability is decreasing, and this can be seen in the global demand for engineering materials having quadrupled in the past 50 years .

As a result, efficient resourcing is no longer just a cost issue for manufacturers, but a core part of their environmental strategy.

One solution is using recycled materials, which not only helps to meet climate change targets and reduce the impact of higher commodity prices, it also helps meet the demand for resources. This strategy goes hand in hand with the avoidance of landfill, an important step to consider for businesses aiming to manage waste more effectively and to consider end of life costs.

At ASSA ABLOY, we are committed to the established environmental principles of reduce, reuse, recycle. This includes reusing many of the materials that come into our factories including wooden pallets, plastic bags and cardboard boxes. This may seem straightforward, but being mindful can have a considerable impact on waste reduction.

The manufacturing process

From simple ideas to advanced technology, there are opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of the manufacturing process.

New innovations mean manufacturers can develop ultra-efficient processes that make the most of raw materials in an environmentally friendly way, in turn reducing emissions further.

At ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, we have invested in a new manufacturing process that is decreasing lead times for customers, having a positive impact on the environment and improving product quality.

Each stage of the new manufacturing process requires little or no manual handling compared to the previous production line, and as a result, the speed of production has accelerated.

Not only this, but the full impact of the investment has been seen through the launch of SMARTform technology, a new door design that incorporates a full interlocking seam on all sides of the leaf. The new door platform reduces the manufacturing time and improves the aesthetic qualities of the door leaf by removing unsightly spot-weld marks. The new design also eliminates processes such as welding and grinding, significantly improving the environmental impact of the product.

Seamlessly linking all parts of the CNC production process with the computer-aided design software ensures consistent accuracy, speed of production and ease of replication should replacements be required.

Ongoing performance

The environmental integrity of a building is a key consideration in the design process for architects and contractors, particularly as clients are beginning to see the benefits of more sustainable buildings through future proofing, reduced operating costs, as well as comfort and health benefits.

The consciousness of the industry to consider the longer-term financial costs and implications of projects and individual products has changed how specifiers source products, and although actual initial cost will always take precedent, there is a growing emphasis on the associated costs over a period of time, and therefore sustainability.

It is crucial that specifiers work with manufacturers who fully understand industry pressures, and will provide a long-term solution, as opposed to an affordable commodity product that offers initial cost savings but no long term benefits. For example, specifying a high quality, fit for purpose security door can reduce maintenance, repair and replacement expenditure over the entire life cycle of a door, ultimately providing better whole life costing and reducing environmental impact.

Customers, investors and communities all expect companies to be working towards green growth, and as a consequence, organisations that aren’t committing to environmental improvements in the manufacturing process may well lose out to greener competitors. Sustainable manufacturing is no longer a luxury, but a business essential.

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors has recently launched its sustainability whitepaper. Read more here:

A Unique Chance to Drive ‘The Lovely Crinkly Edges of Norway’

The inaugural Slartibartfast road trip is being organised by Bespoke Rallies, one of the leading specialists in such long distance motoring events.

A two week rally, it will allow competitors to experience the very best of Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the Norwegian fjords, following a start at the highly-acclaimed Louwman motor museum, The Hague, Holland.

Named in honour of the character that designed the Norwegian fjords in the 1980s comedy SCFI series Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the Slartibartfast is aimed at owners of period or modern classic cars and will take place between August 23 and September 7 this year.

From Holland it heads north through Denmark, Sweden and Finland to Kirkenes; one of the most northerly ports in the Arctic circle, renowned for its views of the Aurora Borealis. From there it takes to the 35-car Hurtigruten ferry MS Midnatsol and follows ‘the lovely crinkly bits’ (as the fjords were described in The Hitchhiker’s Guide) all the way down the west coast to Bergen.

Far from simply enjoying the views from the ship, competitors will disembark each morning and rally their way through the stunning scenery before catching up with their floating hotel each evening.

Said Bespoke Rallies Director John Brigden:
“This is a completely unique event that will allow participants to enjoy Scandinavia in a way they would never have imagined possible. The final drive will comprise a blast along the famous Atlantic Road – unquestionably one of the world’s most incredible motoring experiences.”

Other great events already scheduled by Bespoke Rallies include:

Cuba Classic Rally – January 2018
The 3rd Maya Classic Rally – February 2018
The Highland 1000 – May 2018
The Pyrenees 1000 – September 2018
The Grand Prix of South America – October 2018
Wild Borneo – May 2019
Magical Madagascar – June 2019

Further details of everything on offer from this pioneering rally organiser are available at www.bespokerallies.com.
