The Legal Distinction Between Vehicle Detection and Safety Devices


‘When specifying and procuring safety devices for powered doors, gates, and traffic barriers, it is important to understand the difference between vehicle protection and safety for people.’

Legally, there is a big difference between a safety device for the protection of people and a device for the protection of vehicles.

Vehicle detectors (eg traditional ground loops and more recent radar devices) are not ‘safety devices’ under the terms of the EU Machinery Directive (MD) or the UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations (SMSR). 

Conversely, safety components for the protection of people, such as safe edges, light grids and laser scanners are ‘safety devices’. The latter group, for the protection of people, are required to be supplied with a Declaration of Conformity under EU MD when CE marked or under UK SMSR when UKCA marked; the minimum level of safety for these devices is defined by EN 12978. 

Compliance with EN 12978, as a harmonised standard in the EU and a designated standard in the UK under MD and SMSR respectively, confers a legal presumption of conformity on the device manufacturer.

There are currently vehicle detection sensors with added EN 12453 category D protection coming onto the market. These devices are supplied with a Declaration of Conformity under radio and other electrical directives and regulations, but not machinery, nor are they declared to be in conformity with EN 12978. The reference to EN 12453 category D refers to the device being a non-contact device to supplement force limitation.

EN 12453 refers to protection systems for people as category A & B (hold-to-run) C (force limitation), D (a non-contact supplement for C) or E (non-contact protection that can be used without force limitation). The manufacturers of many of these emerging devices have rated them as vehicle detectors and category D devices under EN 12453. This means that they can be used both in place of a traditional vehicle detection loop and to replace photo beams used to supplement force limitation; they do not, however, provide the primary protection required for people.

Under EN 12453, sensitive safety devices that can provide safety for people (eg safe edges, light grids, and laser scanners) must be compliant with EN 12978, be supplied with a DOC under either EU MD or UK SMSR and be conformity marked CE or UKCA accordingly. The emerging devices described above, however, are mostly not rated under EN 12978 and are not supplied with a DOC under MD, MR, or SMSR. Their intended use is to provide protection for vehicles and to supplement force limitation; consequently, the system must still be force limited and able to pass the force test specified by annex C of EN 12453.

EN 12453, MD, MR and SMSR address the criminal law responsibility to provide safety for people under intended use and foreseeable misuse conditions. The safety of vehicles, on the other hand, is a matter for the civil law (eg negligence), contract law and the potential for insurance claims and is dealt with at the residual risk assessment stage of a compliance assessment.

There are many excellent non-contact devices available that are compliant with EN 12978 and are supplied with a DOC under MD, MR, or SMSR. These can be used to protect people without the need for force limitation, providing they meet the fail-safe requirements of EN 12453 (PL ‘C’ & category 2) as installed and pass the presence detection tests specified by annex D of EN 12453.

Some of these lesser vehicle detection devices are currently being marketed and used as if they were full non-contact devices that negate the need for force limitation, which they are not!

The safety of people is the primary requirement for any powered door, gate, or traffic barrier system and is covered by criminal law relating to the supply of machinery. Devices for the safety of people need to be declared in conformity with EU MD or UK SMSR on a Declaration of Conformity and be compliant with EN 12978.

Devices for the detection of vehicles are not covered by machinery law; they only need to comply with radio and/or electrical directives and regulations and do not need to comply with EN 12978.

Manufacturers, importers, and distributors must ensure that all machinery components they supply are accompanied by an appropriate DOI (drive units and their controls) or DOC (safety devices).

When procuring any machinery device, designers, specifiers, installers, and maintainers should request and assess the relevant legal declaration before using the device in a system.

The DHF code of practice, DHF TS 013-2, explains the above requirements for supply of safety components, partly complete machines (drives and controls) and complete systems. DHF members can download a copy free of charge from the DHF website.

Strategic Development in Europe: New Investments in Poland and Germany



WIŚNIOWSKI, Poland’s leading manufacturer of gates, windows, doors, and fences, is implementing two strategic investment projects that further strengthen its position in the European market.

PLN 160 million for expanding production capacity in Poland

On September 2, WIŚNIOWSKI received approval from the Kraków Technology Park to support the expansion and modernisation of its production facility. The nearly PLN 160 million investment includes infrastructure development, modernization of the machine park, and the purchase of innovative production lines.

The project will optimise technological processes, increase operational efficiency, and develop all product groups – from gates and joinery to fencing systems. Moreover, it will open up new employment opportunities in advanced areas of production and technological process management.

New headquarters in Germany – investment in Unna/Kamen

In parallel, on August 20, WIŚNIOWSKI announced the purchase of an 8,316 m² plot of land in Unna/Kamen (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). A modern office and training complex will be built there, including a showroom, conference space, and a Best-Seller™ training center.

The new facility will not only give customers access to the brand’s full product portfolio but also create up to 30 new jobs in the region. – The convenient location near the Kamener Kreuz transport hub allows us to serve customers in Germany and Western Europe faster and more effectively. This is a strategic step for further expansion, said Marcin Burek, Sales Director for the DACH region at WIŚNIOWSKI.

Enhanced Garage Door Security from Hörmann


With the darker winter months upon us, statistics show that burglary rates consistently rise, driven by longer nights and increased periods when homes are left unoccupied, making it easier for opportunistic intruders. For the door industry, this seasonal pattern underscores the importance of offering homeowners’ effective security solutions...

To respond to this demand Hörmann continues to enhance the security capabilities of its sectional garage doors with innovative technology and proven mechanical systems designed to offer robust, reliable protection.

Unveiled at BAU 2025, Hörmann’s latest development, the HAS1 alarm with sensor, represents a significant step forward in garage door security. Designed to detect and deter unauthorised access, the system triggers a loud acoustic alarm (110db) if an attempt is made to manually lift the garage door without a valid travel command. 

The alarm is fully compatible with Hörmann’s SupraMatic 4 and ProMatic 4 garage door operators and is easy to install, connecting directly to the HCP bus interface via simple adapters. The system uses a reed contact to detect door movement, with the magnet on the operator’s slide carriage providing accurate activation. Crucially, this enhanced security is maintained even when the garage door is in a partially open or ventilated position.

The introduction of the HAS1 alarm complements a comprehensive suite of security measures already available across the Hörmann sectional garage door range. Standard anti-lift kits automatically lock the door when closed, offering immediate protection against forced entry. 

For added mechanical reinforcement, the new ETV-1HCP mechanical locking upgrade provides a robust bolt-locking system at the close end-of-travel position, a solution proven effective on Hörmann’s industrial sectional doors and now available for domestic applications. 

An automatic mechanical locking system the ETV-1HCPT fully integrates with both SupraMatic and ProMatic operators. It offers the convenience of automated door operation combined with the enhanced security of a mechanical locking system, delivering performance without compromise.

Furthermore, all Hörmann sectional garage doors are supplied with Secured Design accreditation as standard — the official UK Police initiative supporting “designing out crime” through physical security.

Maximising Profit and Efficiency through Component Strategy and Operational Excellence

As he turned out of the factory, the sat nav voiced the next instruction: ‘Please turn left in 294 kilometres.’ Australia is a big country, and heading up to the Onslow Mineral Resources mine on the remote west coast can make installing even the simplest of industrial doors a long trip...

On his recent visit to the UK, we spoke to Jochen Bourges, managing director of GfA Australia, and Andy Collett, managing director of GfA UK, about maximising profit and improving efficiencies with a proactive strategy for remote and challenging installation sites - for when remote means very remote, and getting it wrong is a high price to pay.

Bourges says that when being recalled to a remote installation for a problem can cost you a three-day road trip, your strategy for making money and efficiency starts way before you get on the road.

For door manufacturers, sustained profitability hinges on two critical factors: minimising post-installation costs and maximising on-site efficiency. Analysis of industry best practices reveals that a strategic shift from commoditised component

sourcing to reliance on premium, supportive partners is the most effective way to achieve market leadership and maximise margins.
 
1. The Quality Mandate: Eliminating the Hidden Costs of Callbacks

The single greatest drain on profit is the cost associated with site callbacks, warranty claims, and return visits. Leading manufacturers consistently report that when they transition to superior, reliable components, their failure rates drop dramatically.

Actionable Strategy:

● Establish a Zero-Tolerance Reliability Benchmark: Focus purchasing decisions on components recognised as the "industry standard" for quality, even if the initial outlay is higher. This commitment signals to customers that the manufacturer’s product is robust and dependable, fostering trust. One UK manufacturer reported reducing callbacks from one in every 50 installations to "one in a thousand" by committing to premium drives and proving that product excellence directly reduces operational headaches.

● Prioritise Consistency: Select suppliers whose product characteristics (drives, panels) are consistent over time, featuring improvements but not fundamental changes. This consistency allows internal teams and installation partners to know "what you’re going to get" every time, ensuring dependability.

2. Standardisation and Plug-and-Play: Driving Installation Efficiency

Installation time is a direct factor in profitability and installer satisfaction. Manufacturers must streamline the installation process to ensure fitters spend the "minimum amount of time on-site".

Actionable Strategy:

● Adopt a Plug-and-Play Philosophy: Integrate drive systems and controls that utilise "plug-and-play" technology. This simplification minimises manual wiring, making installation easier and faster, and reduces the risk of human error.

● Standardise Control Panels Across Product Lines: A key strategy is to use the same control panels across the entire product portfolio (e.g., high-speed, sectional, and roller shutters). This standardisation is a "game changer" because it makes fitter training easier, reduces on-site mistakes, and ensures installers can become genuine experts in the system, rather than constantly having to relearn controls.

● Ensure Simple Setup: Provide equipment that is "simple and easy to set up," supplied with clear instructions that guide the installer through the necessary installation steps. Training sessions reinforce this simplicity, and are highly appealing to the wider industry.
 
3. Leveraging Technical Support and Diagnostics

When issues inevitably arise, fast resolution is necessary to maintain customer loyalty and operational momentum. Relying on components that are backed by robust support and diagnostic features minimises manufacturer burden.

Actionable Strategy:

● Source Components with Strong Self-Diagnostic Capabilities: Utilise technology that includes performance and self-diagnostic features to help installers quickly identify and address problems.

● Insist on Expert, Accessible Technical Support: Partner with suppliers that offer immediate technical assistance where experts are "always on hand to answer a question," rather than relying on delayed callbacks. This expertise allows installers to troubleshoot complex issues over the phone, avoiding immediate return visits.

● Delegate Customer Support: Strategically choose suppliers willing to provide direct technical support to the manufacturer's own customers and end-users. This frees up the manufacturer’s internal technical team, ensuring customers receive expert advice straight from the component source.

● Adopt a "Right-First-Fix" Approach: A great warranty is important, but what you need is to get the right specification first time, to eliminate most of the recall issues. It’s a proactive and pre-emptive approach - rather than relying on the warranty to mitigate the risk.
 
4. Strategic Supplier Relations for Innovation and Growth

To remain competitive, manufacturers must align themselves with partners recognised as "trendsetters" and continually invest in future technology.

Actionable Strategy:

● Benchmark Against Strategic Partners: View key suppliers not merely as transactional vendors, but as strategic relationships with whom the company can benchmark its own operations and growth. A supplier's strong reputation adds weight to the manufacturer's own standing in the market.

● Embrace Connectivity (IoT): Investigate and integrate innovations like Internet of Things (IoT) data and remote diagnostic apps. Transparency enables the end user and installer to identify the exact fault, eliminating guesswork, preventing unnecessary upselling, and ultimately building trust.

● Focus on Long-Term Alignment: Build relationships based on reliability, integrity, and support, recognising that a stable, trusting partnership is more valuable than constant short-term price negotiation. This foundation ensures that the manufacturer can supply robust, high-performance doors that consistently function effectively.

Audi Concept C lights up London


The Audi Concept C, an unambiguous preview of the brand’s future design philosophy, made its UK debut at an exclusive London event hosted by Audi’s Chief Creative Officer, Massimo Frascella. Rooted in the principles of clarity, intelligence, technicality, and emotion the influence of the Concept C extends beyond Audi’s future models, representing a fundamental realignment for the entire company.

“Radical simplicity is the core of Audi’s new design philosophy,” says Audi AG Chief Creative Officer, Massimo Frascella. “True clarity is achieved by reducing everything to the essential —the Concept C is the first manifestation of a new design language that feels intuitive, confident, and unmistakably Audi.”


Inspired by the past, made for the future

Since the rebirth of the Audi brand 60 years ago, has demonstrated its leadership through cutting-edge technology and innovation. Cars such as the Audi Ur-quattro, TT coupe, and R8 V8 shaped the brand’s identity over the decades - the Concept C continuous this legacy into the next generation.

The Singleframe grille, the face of Audi models since it was first introduced on the Audi A6 (2004), has been reimagined with the Concept C. Inspired by the Auto Union Type C (1936) the new ‘vertical frame’ conveys presence and sits centrally between new light signatures featuring four horizontally arranged elements in each headlight.

“London is a city built on innovation, so we are incredibly proud to host the Audi Concept C following its public debut at the IAA Munich,” added Audi UK director, José Miguel Aparicio. “Over many decades Audi has set the mould for groundbreaking design, particularly with the TT coupe, and the Concept C is brand’s next step on our mission to become the leader in the premium space."

 

Clarity inside and out

The idea of radical simplicity extends inside the Concept C, where anodized aluminium, geometric forms, and elegance surfaces bathe the cabin. Tactility and quality are key focus points highlighted by the round steering wheel with haptic elements and the return of physical controls manufactured from anodised aluminium. Like the exterior, the titanium-inspired colour finish portrays a sense of harmony and technical precision.

For the first time on an Audi roadster, the Concept C features a retractable folding hardtop. It allows the car to retain its sculptured shape when in place, but also the possibility of open top driving at the touch of a button.

Located at London’s famous Piccadilly Circus, Below The Lights is one of the capital’s newest event spaces built for immersive and digitally driven experiences - the perfect location for the Concept C’s debut. The venue’s showpiece, a 14-metre-wide LED display, brings the concept car’s finer details and stunning craftsmanship to life, enhancing the impact of the physical event.

DHF’s year in review…


As 2025 draws to a close, it feels right to pause and reflect on a year that has seen DHF continue to grow and flourish. It has been a year defined by achievement and collaboration, and by a tireless commitment to the people and industries it serves. From achieving ISO 9001 certification, to publishing the long-awaited Competence Framework and launching a pioneering new qualification, the Federation has continued to strengthen its foundations while looking confidently to the future.

The year began with a sense of excitement and possibility. In February, DHF hosted its first Members’ Conference at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford, where more than 200 members and industry professionals gathered for a day of insight, discussion and connection. The event brought together a programme of workshops and speakers, including Dafydd Williams from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, who shared the government’s response to Grenfell, and Gillian McAteer from Citation, who offered invaluable guidance on employment law. A moving moment came from Flight Lieutenant, John Nichol, whose keynote address about his experience as a British prisoner of war during the Gulf War was both humbling and inspiring. Alongside the talks, an exhibition hall filled with leading names from across the sector created opportunities for collaboration and the sharing of knowledge that will carry forward into the year ahead.


In April, the launch of the ABBE Level 3 Award in Compliance and Safety of Fire Resisting Roller Shutter Doors marked a major milestone. Developed by DHF to strengthen competence within this highly specialised area, the qualification has already seen remarkable uptake from companies determined to uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance. It reflects DHF’s enduring mission to support professional growth and align industry practice with a focus on building safety and competence.

Another defining achievement came with the completion of the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) Competence Framework for Doors, Gates and Shutters. Developed in close partnership with the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) and guided by the Sector Lead Group 10, the project represented eighteen months of careful collaboration and consultation. Led by DHF and ADSA, and supported by DHF’s Senior Training and Compliance Officer, Steve Hill, the framework establishes clear, practical standards for competence across installation, maintenance and servicing. For DHF members, this work has real impact. More and more organisations, for example, Amazon and Heathrow Airport, are now requiring evidence of individual competence for both installation and maintenance. The framework and accompanying National Occupational Standards help ensure DHF members can demonstrate the professional skill and assurance expected of them.

The summer brought one of the Federation’s proudest moments. DHF achieved ISO 9001 certification, confirming its position as an organisation that leads by example. This recognition of quality management and continuous improvement reinforces DHF’s reputation for professionalism and integrity in all that it does. In September, a further milestone followed with authorisation to provide Blue Skilled Worker cards for the Dock Leveller industry. This step has brought well-deserved recognition for individuals working in this specialist area and underlines DHF’s growing role in supporting competence and training across every corner of its sector.


Throughout 2025, DHF has remained close to its members and partners. The Federation attended key national events including The Security Event, The FIT Show, Fencex, and the MLA Expo, meeting members face-to-face, sharing updates and listening to feedback. The Federation also continued its proud sponsorship of the Automated Gate category at the AFI Awards, celebrating innovation and excellence within the fencing community. Member engagement has remained central to DHF’s purpose, with a series of members’ open days around the UK. One particularly meaningful initiative saw Steve Hill spend several weeks in Ireland, offering training and support to members across the Republic. His visit received outstanding feedback and further strengthened DHF’s ties with the Irish market.

While the year brought challenges, including increased National Insurance contributions and a slowdown in construction, the outlook among DHF members has remained encouraging. Many report steady order books and continued demand within commercial and industrial markets, a reminder of the sector’s resilience and its ability to adapt and thrive even when conditions are uncertain.


“No reflection on the year would be complete, of course, without recognising the people who make DHF what it is,” says DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “As the year draws to a close, DHF prepares to say farewell to Nick Perkins, whose knowledge and expertise have left a lasting mark on the industry. Nick’s retirement will be felt by colleagues and members alike, and he departs with the Federation’s gratitude and warmest wishes." 

 Earlier in the year, the Federation wished a fond farewell to Helen Skelding, whose calm professionalism and loyal service earned her the respect and affection of all who worked with her. The team was joined by Eddie Payne as Finance Manager, bringing fresh perspective and experience to support DHF’s continuing growth. Later in the year, Jason Smith moved on after many valued contributions, and the Federation welcomed Jonathan Colen as its first Commercial Manager, strengthening the organisation’s commercial insight and engagement. Within the Membership Department, Olivia Juxon began maternity leave in November, and we were delighted to welcome Charlotte Winsper to the team to ensure members continue to receive excellent support.

WIŚNIOWSKI Connected debuts with additional smart products in Europe


WIŚNIOWSKI Connected is a free app available for Android, iOS, and as a web version. It manages the entire smart-home system – from entrance and garage gates to doors and shutters. Now, the system is gradually becoming available through selected WIŚNIOWSKI distribution partners across Europe, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Italy.

With a single app, multiple locations can be managed – for example, a city home, business premises, a shop, or a holiday house – without needing to log in to different accounts. The app allows users to monitor product status, effectively becoming a “remote control” for the property. It is also ideally suited for commercial use, where customers can grant access to a building on specific days or at designated times.

Hörmann Introduces Flood-Resistant Doors


Hörmann UK have expanded its extensive product portfolio with the introduction of flood-resistant versions of its established industrial steel construction doors and its premium ThermoSafe Hybrid aluminium entrance door.

In response to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall and flooding, Hörmann has developed solutions to help protect buildings from water ingress. The flood resistant versions of the doors do not compromise on performance or aesthetics and have been independently tested to ift Rosenheim’s FE-07/2 guidelines for flood-resistant closures, covering windows, doors, gates, and roller shutters.

The flood-resistant variant of Hörmann’s industrial steel doors maintains all its core functionalities, including fire resistance, sound insulation, thermal efficiency, and security. It offers protection against floodwater up to 900 mm for single-leaf doors up to 1150mm wide. A retrofit package is also available, allowing existing installations to be upgraded with this flood protection capability.

On the residential side, the ThermoSafe Hybrid aluminium entrance door now features flood resistance up to 500 mm water height for door widths up to 1250mm. These enhancements do not affect the door’s advanced performance levels or its modern, stylish appearance.

With these latest additions, Hörmann reinforces its position at the forefront of innovation, creating resilient building protection solutions tailored for industrial and residential environments.

FenceX 2025 Breaks Records and Brings the Fencing Industry Together


The UK fencing industry came together in record numbers on 15th October for FenceX 2025 at NAEC Stoneleigh – and the result was a day packed with innovation, collaboration, and inspiration.

With record numbers of visitors and more than 80 exhibitors showcasing the latest in fencing products, technology, and best practice, this year’s show was the largest and most dynamic FenceX ever. From the exhibition floor to the outdoor demonstration areas, the energy and enthusiasm were evident throughout the day.


Live Action, Innovation and Expertise

One of the biggest draws of the show was the largest-ever destruction testing schedule seen at a UK fencing exhibition. Crowds gathered throughout the day to watch leading manufacturers – including Barkers, Zaun, CLD, IAE, Alexandra, Henry Squire & Son, and First Fence – put their products through rigorous real-world testing. These live demonstrations not only showcased the strength and durability of modern fencing solutions but also highlighted the continual innovation taking place within the sector.

The Gate Automation Zone, delivered in partnership with the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), and First Fence was another major attraction. Featuring live demonstrations, compliance guidance, and expert advice, the zone proved invaluable for contractors, specifiers, and clients keen to understand more about automated access solutions


Best Practice in Action

Outside, the AFI & AFA Best Practice Day brought practical skills and expert techniques to life. Following the sell-out spring event at Harper Adams, the outdoor demonstrations at FenceX featured two full fencing lines – one timber and one metal – covering everything from deer and horse netting to stock fencing and electric top rails.

Delegates learned how to adapt approaches for strainers, struts, turners, and wire work across different ground conditions and added even more value to a packed programme.

Knowledge Sharing and Future Thinking

Education was also at the heart of the show, with a busy seminar programme tackling key topics including apprenticeships, standards, safety, compliance, and business development. Speakers from across the industry – including training experts, standards bodies, and leading contractors – shared practical insights and answered audience questions in well-attended sessions throughout the day.


Perks, Prizes and Networking

Visitors who pre-registered were welcomed with a free breakfast roll and coffee to start their day, and hundreds took the opportunity to network, meet suppliers, and explore new business opportunities.

One lucky visitor will also be enjoying a weekend in Ghent, courtesy of Locinox, with Eurostar travel, hotel accommodation, and a private tour of the company’s cutting-edge factory included. The prize draw, entered by dropping name badges into a collection bucket on departure, proved a popular finale to a memorable day – the winners presentation will take place at the UK Fencing Industry Awards on 13th November at Mercedes Benz World.

With this year’s event setting a new benchmark, the AFI is already planning ahead for future editions. For those who couldn’t make it, highlights, photos, and videos will be shared on the FenceX website and social media channels in the coming weeks.

DSI Delivers a Stunning New Shopfront for M&S Outlet


Door Systems Installations (DSI) is proud to announce the successful completion of a brand-new shopfront installation for the latest Marks & Spencer Outlet, handed over ahead of schedule and finished to the retailer’s exact specification.

The project involved the full removal of the existing frontage and the installation of a sleek new Seniors SFG-SD aluminium shopfront system, complete with 25mm double glazing for improved energy efficiency and acoustic performance. The design also features toughened laminated safety glass in the side screens, combining strength, security, and style.

Accessibility was a top priority, with a DDA-compliant ramped threshold seamlessly integrated into the new entrance. Finished in RAL 9005 Black, the contemporary frame perfectly complements M&S’s clean, modern aesthetic.
 
Smart Automation

The new entrance is powered by a Record STA-20 automatic sliding door system, offering smooth and reliable operation. Controlled via a digital function box and supported by advanced safety sensors, the system ensures effortless access for shoppers while maintaining maximum safety and efficiency.
 
Working to the M&S Standard

From initial site meetings to final handover, the DSI team worked closely with the client and design team to meet M&S’s exacting standards. This included using low-iron glass with a toughened outer pane and laminated inner pane to provide enhanced clarity and visual quality.

Although five days were allocated for the project, DSI completed the full replacement in just three days, underlining the company’s trademark speed and attention to detail.

Tendered to multiple suppliers, the project was awarded to DSI for its competitive pricing, responsive service, and proven technical expertise — a combination that continues to set the company apart in the UK retail and commercial sectors.

Another year nearly gone… another one coming

And just like that, another year has almost slipped by—proof, perhaps, that time really does fly when you’re ISO-certified, conference-hosting, qualification-launching, and competence-defining!

2025 has been a year of remarkable progress for DHF. From earning ISO 9001 certification to launching the ABBE Level 3 Award in Fire Resisting Roller Shutter Doors and even helping to shape the industry’s new Competence Framework, we’ve shown that when it comes to raising standards, we don’t just talk about it — we publish, deliver, and certify it.

So, what awaits us in 2026? In no particular order (and with a fresh notebook at the ready):
  • Publish a Technical Specification for key safes—complete with aspirations of a BSI Kitemark and Secured by Design support.
  • Host another DHF Conference and Exhibition, following the success of RAF Cosford 2025.
  • Encourage more face-to-face events to give members space to connect (and maybe even debate which buffet sandwich reigns supreme).
  • Launch an Apprenticeship Scheme for installers of industrial and garage doors and gates.
  • Roll out an Ofqual-accredited training programme for building hardware manufacturers.
  • Continue guiding our members through the ever-twisting path of sustainability and add PSTI to the list.
  • Raise the bar of competency through offering NVQs and CSCS cards.
  • Continue offering our standards training through various means, making them accessible to all and encouraging the uptake on refresher courses or CPD webinars.
  • Promote the use of timber and steel doorsets.
  • And, as ever, deliver the best possible technical support for our members.
No small list—but then, DHF has never been one to take the easy route.

Twelve months from now, we’ll look back and, with any luck, tick off most of these boxes (and perhaps even add a few surprise achievements for good measure).

Until then, thank you to the entire DHF team for their unwavering commitment, professionalism, and good humour—it’s your work that turns ambition into accomplishment. And thank you to our members, without whom none of this would be possible.

Here’s to another year of challenge, change, and progress—and to proving once again that for DHF, “business as usual” means anything but.
