Valkyrie races to best result at Road America as Aston Martin THOR Team builds on progress

The spectacular new Aston Martin Valkyrie achieved its best finish yet in global endurance competition, when it placed sixth in the latest round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IMSA) – the Motul Sportscar Grand Prix of Road America (WI).

The result marked the sixth consecutive top ten finish for the British hypercar in IMSA, extending its remarkable points run and maintaining its 100% finishing record on its debut season in North America’s premier endurance series. And the best IMSA finish ever recorded by a car built to 'Le Mans Hypercar' (LMH) regulations, Valkyrie being the only car in IMSA's premier GTP category derived from a road-legal hypercar.

The British contender is also the first LMH car of any kind to compete in IMSA, and the only one contesting both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) simultaneously, having made its competition debut in the Qatar 1812km in February.

The Aston Martin THOR Team (THOR) and works drivers Roman De Angelis (CAN) and Ross Gunn (GBR), delivered a solid and competitive performance in an incident-filled two hour and 40-minute race, consistently running close enough to the leaders to pounce on rivals when they hit trouble.

And in an event featuring no less than four Full Course Yellow (FCY) periods (where the race was neutralised and run behind the Safety Car), this happened on more than one occasion. Valkyrie showed promise all weekend, having set the second fastest time in free practice on Friday.

Gunn then qualified the #23 Valkyrie 10th for the race, less than 0.7s off the pole position time in a highly competitive 15-minutes GTP-only session on the long and challenging 4.05-mile circuit.

THOR opted to keep Gunn on track during the first FCY as others pitted early in the race, giving Valkyrie a competitive track position it then maintained for much of the race. In De Angelis’s hands Valkyrie then ran as high as fifth as the event moved through its various FCY phases and teams deployed diverse strategies.

But in the final uninterrupted 40-minute run to the flag, the British hypercar more than held its own and even extended its advantage over the chasing pack to finish a comfortable sixth, 16.5s behind the winner.

Ross Gunn, driver #23 Aston Martin Valkyrie: “This was a very strong weekend for the car and the team. I’m very proud of everybody that’s working hard to improve the performance. We were able to hold on to some very fast cars out there and even pass some of them. It was a fun afternoon. We’re obviously still not where we want to be, but clearly now it’s evident the progress that we’re making. We’ve got quite a big break now until Indy, so for sure there is more time to keep uncovering more pace, but this was a breakout race for us.”

Roman De Angelis, driver #23 Aston Martin Valkyrie: “It was a pretty good weekend for us. This was obviously our best result so far with this Aston Martin Valkyrie. Everyone did a great job in qualifying six tenths off the pole, I know we were tenth on the grid, but this is the longest track and that was the closest gap to the front so far. The race was great, I really enjoyed finally getting to race against some guys that have been at the front for years now in this class, and I can’t wait to build on this performance at Indianapolis.”

Valkyrie’s next race in IMSA takes place at the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, in the six-hour ‘Battle on the Bricks’ from 19-21 September.

MASERATI MC12 STRADALE SUPERCAR LEADS AUCTION OFFERING

Broad Arrow Auctions, a Hagerty (NYSE: HGTY) company, is delighted to announce final entries for its flagship Monterey Jet Center Auction on August 13-14, led by a landmark 2005 Maserati MC12 Stradale, chassis number 12095. One of just 50 MC12 Stradale road cars built to homologate Maserati’s dominant FIA GT1 racer, the car on offer shows just over 11,500 kilometers (Estimate: $4,800,000 - $5,500,000).

“The MC12 is the pinnacle of the Maserati brand; it’s the marque’s first and only supercar and the car that put it back on the competition map,” says Alexander Weaver, Senior Car Specialist and VP of Private Sales for Broad Arrow. “While it is based around the Ferrari Enzo, the MC12 wears a competition-purpose body, offers a removable roof panel, and is significantly rarer, produced in just 50 units compared to the Enzo’s 400. It is fresh from a comprehensive service, and ready to drive and enjoy.”

The MC12 program is credited with successfully restoring Maserati to its rightful place among the world's most premier racing marques while simultaneously creating one of the most coveted road cars of the modern era. Chassis number 12095 was completed in 2005, the second and final year of production. It is finished in the signature Bianco Fuji pearlescent white livery with blue accents that paid homage to the colors of the America CAMORADI Scuderia, which campaigned the legendary Maserati Tipo 60/61 Birdcages in the early 1960s. The sporting exterior is complemented by a luxurious Blu leather and BrighTex fabric interior.

The MC12 Stradale's technical foundation centered on the 6.0-liter Tipo M144A V12 engine derived from the Enzo. In Maserati tune, the powerplant produced 630 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 481 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm. The car on offer is a superb, road-going version of the era-defining GT racing car of the 2000s, offering the chance to own and experience a true homologation special that bridges Maserati's illustrious competition heritage with modern performance from one of the most dominant GT1 programs in history.

Led by the MC12, Broad Arrow’s Monterey Jet Center Auction will present 170 collector cars over two exciting days, a curation of some of the most highly desirable collector cars across today’s most active segments of the market. From modern supercars and track-focused machines to timeless post-war classics and on-the-rise JDM icons, there’s something for every automotive passion at the August 13-14 sale.

“Today’s most active buyers at the top tier of the collector car market are a step younger and more focused on performance and usability,” says Barney Ruprecht, Senior Car Specialist and VP of Auctions, Broad Arrow. “The cars they are after are nevertheless still best-of-category, incredibly rare, and of the highest quality, whether that means low mileage or careful preservation. Our 2025 Monterey Jet Center Auction presents a host of these highly desirable collector cars across the most active and sought-after segments of the market, from supercars to rising-star JDM variants.”

Beyond the Maserati, additional supercar highlights for the Monterey Jet Center Auction include:

2008 Koenigsegg CCXR, one of just 11 examples built and merely three in the U.S. Well-maintained and tastefully upgraded throughout its life, this six-speed manual CCXR was featured in the fifth Fast & Furious film and offers a raw, analog driving experience seldom found in the modern hypercar era (Estimate: $2,750,000 - $3,500,000).

2018 Bugatti Chiron, a spectacular two-owner example that embodies all the grandeur of its breed, with over $500,000 in factory options. The Chiron’s offering represents an opportunity to acquire a modestly driven example of Bugatti’s era-defining hypercar in what is believed to be a one-of-one specification (Estimate: $3,000,000 - $3,500,000).

1991 Ferrari F40, a remarkably original, preservation-grade, U.S.-market example with a mere 1,701 miles and long-term ownership history (Estimate: $3,350,000 - $3,500,000).

1968 Lamborghini Miura P400, a Series II example of the original supercar, delivered new to Prince Abdul Elah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia. Finished in its original combination of Bianco over a Rosso leather interior, the beautifully restored, matching-numbers car is equipped with its original factory “special modified 380 BHP” engine (Estimate: $2,000,000 - $2,400,000).

A pair of Countaches, including an original-owner, time-capsule 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV (Estimate: $800,000 - $900,000) and a 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition (Estimate: $500,000 - $600,000), the ultimate and fastest edition of the Countach, formerly a staple of WWE superstar John Cena's esteemed car collection.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Prototype "Stealth", the final SLR Roadster ever produced, retained by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) for testing and development (Estimate: $1,000,000 - $1,250,000).

2011 Hennessey Venom GT, a one-of-13, 2,300-km, American-assembled hypercar offered without reserve in Monterey (Estimate: $350,000 - $450,000, Offered Without Reserve).

Bidder registration, the complete digital catalog, and additional information on all cars on offer is available at broadarrowauctions.com. Interested bidders are invited to connect with a Broad Arrow car specialist at +1 313 312 0780.

ASSA ABLOY Door Group launches new LPS 2081 Certified Powershield Rathlin Door

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions Door Group has launched the new Powershield Rathlin door, which is LPS 2081 certified and prevents unauthorised access by various physical security products when targeted by intruders using stealth.

The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) is a globally recognised third-party certification body that sets the standards needed to ensure that fire and security products and services perform effectively.

The new standard LPS 2081, created by the LPBC with the BRE and Secured by Design, specifies two grades of security relating to the tools used and the time taken by attackers where they want to avoid making any significant noise. This standard is separate to LPS 1175, which also relates to vandalism and security, but has different requirements to the noise element.

With LPS 2081, the security performance is split into two categories – A or B - based on the tools used and the duration of the attack. The new Powershield Rathlin is LPS 2081 Security B rated, which is the more advanced rating, prolonging the attack for up to 3 minutes, and with an enhanced set of tools.

The new Powershield Rathlin comprises of morticed mechanical escape lock with automatic deadlocking, panic pad, key with AASD Guard, louvre vents, pull handle, surface mounted pull handle, vison panels, and active leaf.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland Door Group, explained:
“The market leading Powershield steel door range combines high performance with high quality, offering a fully compliant, fully finished door set with factory-fitted hardware. Doors and frames are designed to ensure ease of installation on-site and provide the end user with a premium door solution.
“Our new Powershield Rathlin’s LPS 2081 certification demonstrates the door’s ability to withstand a stealth attack, where the intruder avoids making significant noise that would usually draw attention.
“This new addition adds to our existing comprehensive portfolio of high-performance products that meet the standards and legislation for safety and security.”

‘History of Mazda Premium’ and 25th Anniversary of Le Mans Win to be Showcased at 2016 Japanese Classic Car Show

- Mazda to Celebrate Life, Career of Factory Driver Yoshimi Katayama -

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has announced its lineup for the Japanese Classic Car Show (JCCS) in Long Beach, California, September 24, including four of seven vehicles making their first-time appearances at the largest vintage Japanese car show in the U.S.

This year’s theme for Mazda is twofold, representing “History of Mazda Premium” and racing successes of the past with a particular focus on the 25th anniversary of Mazda’s 24 Hours of Le Mans overall win and the life of Mazda factory driver Yoshimi Katayama, whose career spanned four decades with Mazda, both as a racer and development driver. Katayama, who was vital to Mazda’s Le Mans efforts, passed away on March 26 this year.

Kelvin Hiraishi, director of engineering, MNAO said:

“In order to move forward, you have to reflect on the past. From his early days racing motorcycles and Mazda Carol sedans to his later career, honing rotary engines for racing, Katayama-san will forever be remembered as a legend of Japanese and international racing and a champion of Mazda’s challenger spirit. To celebrate his life and accomplishments is our way of honoring his time as a part of the Mazda family.”

At JCCS, MNAO will have a 1979 RX-7 IMSA GTU racecar that was used as a development vehicle and backup. It was never raced competitively, but it bears Katayama’s name above its driver-side door.

The No. 202 Mazda 767B Group C Le Mans prototype will also be on-hand, making its JCCS debut. Painted in its original Charge Renown livery, this car placed ninth at the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans and recently made its first trip to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, where it was driven by MNAO Design Manager Ken Saward. Katayama drove it in four races in Japan between 1989 and 1990, retiring just shy of when its successor, an orange and green 787B, would become the first— and so far only—Japanese car to win Le Mans outright.

Following those two cars, Mazda’s display will focus on what the company calls “Mazda Premium,” a guiding principle of craftsmanship and quality that can be found throughout Mazda’s current SKYACTIV-generation vehicles.

What may be surprising to some is that upscale aesthetics in Mazda vehicles have been part of the company’s ethos for decades. This is demonstrated in vehicles such as the 1967 Cosmo Sport 110S, a JCCS stalwart and luxury sports coupe that was also Mazda’s first foray into rotary engines for production applications.

The Cosmo line lived on in Japan until 1995, where it was positioned in price and prestige above the RX-7 of the day. Badged as a Eunos, Mazda’s sporting sub-brand, the Cosmo MNAO owns is powered by a twin-turbocharged, three-rotor engine that makes 280 horsepower. At one point, the Eunos Cosmo was intended to be badged as an Amati in the U.S. to compete against other Japanese luxury brands.

Another car that was supposed to lend its chassis to the Amati brand was the 929, which will be making its JCCS debut as well. The 1992 Mazda 929 is being brought to Long Beach from Irvine, where it has spent the last 20 years hidden in the back of Mazda’s Heritage Collection basement.

Believed to have been used for advertising shoots, this 929 recently underwent a restoration to return it to running condition again. In 1992, it sold new for $27,800, or almost $50,000 in today’s dollars.

Along with the historic cars, the 2016 CX-9 Signature midsize crossover SUV joins Mazda’s lineup for JCCS, powered by a newly turbocharged, 2.5-liter SKYACTIV engine and comes with Auburn Nappa leather, aluminum accents influenced by the designs of Japanese katana swords and rosewood sourced from Japanese guitar-maker Fujigen.

The second-generation CX-9 went on sale in the U.S. in May and features many Mazda and industry firsts, including its innovative Dynamic Pressure Turbocharger system, predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive and standard LED headlights and tail lights, a class-exclusive feature.

Capping the cars on-hand will be the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Spyder concept that was one of the stars of the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Adorned with a bespoke leather interior and painted Mercury Silver, MX-5 Spyder was introduced as one of two takes on lightweight design and engineering and previewed a color combination similar to what will be available on the 2017 MX-5 RF Launch Edition.

The Spring 2016 Issue of the Door Industry Journal has been Published

A big welcome to all of our readers and to our 64th issue, which this time extends to a very commendable 120 pages.

Well, Spring has certainly sprung and everyone’s thoughts are turning to coming out of hibernation, planning holidays, travel, a bit of DIY and other outside activities.

With travel in mind, you could always take a trip to Germany and see the Teckentrup T30 all glass fire doors installed in Colditz Castle - see page 16 to find out more.

Alternatively, if you are in the Garage and Industrial Doors business, a trip across the pond to the IDA Expo in Las Vegas at the end of April might blow away the last cobwebs of Winter! See the schedule of events on page 112.

Turning to a bit of DIY, you may well have to do-it-yourself, because a survey by Ironmongery Direct has revealed that tradesmen were busier than ever during 2015 and are continuing to be as busy in 2016 – see page 10 for more.

Following on from the DIY theme, if you have concerns over the environment and steadily rising fuel costs, you could learn about building your own house. The Hormann feature on page 84 highlights in detail how Nick Cvetkovic built his own low carbon, energy efficient house in Leicestershire.

Finally, did you know that in addition to this magazine, which publishes three times a year, we also publish this daily blog and a weekly newsletter which summarises the previous weeks’ blog postings in one easy to read email?

You can sign up to receive our blog posts at www.doorindustryjournal.blogspot.com and subscribe to our weekly newsletter at this convenient short link http://eepurl.com/e4Yew or via the home page on our website www.doorindustryjournal.co.uk .

I trust our latest issue will provide you with an interesting and informative read, so until our next issue in late July 2016, I wish you an enjoyable Spring.

Derek Hibbart

Editor, Door Industry Journal

Garage Door Website Wars

The article that follows was published in the Door and Access Systems magazine newsletter last week in the USA.

It provides some cautionary advice for anyone who has plans to promote their business using additional domain names - it's far from short but well worth a read.

"Two garage door dealers in Idaho have been battling over ownership rights of a website domain name. The fight went all the way to Switzerland and the World Intellectual Property Organization.

WIPO has now issued a final resolution to the dispute. We have all the details, plus some potent web marketing lessons for all garage door dealers".
