Car park access: Choosing the right drive & control for the application

Car park entrances are among the most demanding door applications in the industry. Whether positioned beneath residential apartments, integrated into mixed-use developments, or serving high-turnover commercial sites, they are expected to perform flawlessly—often hundreds of cycles a day—while remaining secure, quiet, and reliable.

We spoke to Dan Pahal, Business Development Manager at GfA UK, to discuss how installers can navigate these complex specifications.

For installers and specifiers, success lies in asking the right questions at the outset. Traffic levels, security, user profile, noise sensitivity, and system integration all influence the correct choice of drive and control package. Get it right, and the result is a high-performing, low-maintenance solution that satisfies end-users, architects, and facilities managers alike.
Understanding traffic demands

The starting point for any car park project is usage. A simple way to estimate demand is to multiply the number of parking spaces by the expected turnover. In busy retail environments, entrances and exits may operate almost continuously at certain times of the day, whereas residential or commercial settings may see distinct peaks in the mornings and evenings.

High traffic volumes demand drives designed for frequent operation and minimal downtime. Underspecifying here risks premature failure of the drive system requiring costly callouts. For these applications, a high-usage, or GfA FI (inverter) drive is often the required solution to handle the duty cycle.

Managing noise and neighbour impact

Noise is frequently the deciding factor in residential and mixed-use projects. A door that rattles, slams, or lingers open can quickly generate complaints from occupants above or beside the car park.

Selecting an FI drive with soft-start and soft-stop functionality significantly reduces mechanical shock and vibration. Inverter drives allow for smoother acceleration and deceleration, improving both acoustic performance and component longevity. While lath type and mounting arrangements are critical to minimising transmitted vibration, the control logic must also be set to avoid unnecessary open times that prolong the disturbance.
Specifying for public use

Unlike industrial sites, many car parks are used by untrained members of the public, which changes the safety equation. Automatic operation, vehicle detection loops, photocells, and safety edges are essential considerations.

Clear logic that ensures the door closes promptly once a vehicle has passed improves both safety and security. Specifiers should refer to BS EN 12453 5.2.1.8 [AC1] to help select the correct type of safety devices for the application.

Where a punched lath or rolling grille is utilised, high-level anti-entrapment sensors must be installed if there is risk of a person being lifted by the door. Installers should also consider control panel accessories, such as blanking plates and safety edge covers, to prevent unauthorised use and vandalism in accessible areas.

Intelligent control and integration

Today’s car-park doors are no longer simple open-and-close mechanisms; they are active parts of the building’s ecosystem.

Integration is increasingly important. In enclosed or underground facilities, doors often need to link with fire-alarm systems, ventilation fans, or building management systems (BMS). The control solution must accommodate these additional signals without compromising reliability.

This orchestration requires a control solution with sufficient inputs and outputs, as well as sufficient flexibility. Functions such as auto-close (triggered once a vehicle clears a detection beam) help prevent doors from remaining open unnecessarily. In ramped or narrow entrances, traffic-light sequencing can manage one-way movement to reduce conflict, while exit stacking management prevents vehicles from queuing out into public roads.

Security beyond the door leaf

Car-park entrances pose a specific security risk, meaning specification must look beyond the door leaf. Whether linked to access cards, remote controls, or ANPR systems, the control panel must integrate seamlessly with external inputs.

Specifiers should consider the logic for both directions. How is unauthorised access prevented on entry? How is tailgating managed to ensure security without causing congestion on exit?

Security also means resilience. Rapid closing after activation reduces the window of vulnerability and discourages misuse.

Checklist: Selecting the right package

When specifying a drive and control solution for a car-park project, a structured checklist helps avoid compromise:

● Cycle rating: Confirm the number of spaces and cycles per hour/day to ensure the drive rating matches the application.

● Door type: Roller shutters, sectional doors, folding gates, and sliding gates all require different drive configurations.

● Speed and smoothness: In busy environments, faster opening reduces vehicle waiting times, but this must be balanced with controlled, quiet movement as with the GfA FI drives.

● Control capability: Ensure the control panel can handle the required peripherals. The GfA TS Control Panel range, for example, is available with 1000mA support to accommodate the additional 24v loading from ancillary devices like traffic lights.

● Safety and security: Specify safety edges, monitoring systems, and anti-entrapment devices.

● Environmental conditions: Consider IP ratings and protection based on where the drive and control are being installed.
Long-term performance

Ultimately, car park access systems are judged on reliability. Facilities managers expect consistent performance with minimal disruption, while residents notice only when something goes wrong.

By carefully assessing traffic levels, user profiles, and integration requirements at the specification stage, installers can match the correct drive and control logic to the application. The result is a solution that delivers smooth operation, strong security, and low noise, even under demanding conditions.

For advice on your car park applications, the GfA sales team is on hand to provide a solution. Contact the team on 01926 452452 option 1.

Hörmann Bollards Secure Sanderson Transport’s Distribution Hub

FBS Hörmann has recently completed the installation of five Hörmann Security Line automatic bollards at the main entrance to the East Midlands storage and distribution facility operated by Stephen Sanderson Transport. The new bollards have been installed to enhance traffic management and site security, complementing the company’s existing automated gate and security systems.

The Hörmann Security Line automatic bollards provide a highly reliable and flexible solution for controlling vehicle access at busy logistics sites. Designed for continuous operation, the bollards can be fully raised in just 1.5 seconds, allowing for rapid response in emergency situations. Integrated battery back-up systems ensure continued functionality and site protection even during power outages.

Safety is a key feature of the system, with each bollard incorporating force limitation technology. In the unlikely event of pedestrian contact during operation, the bollard automatically retracts to prevent injury. The installation also includes a fully integrated safety control system featuring induction loops, photocells, and a traffic light interface, ensuring safe and efficient access control for vehicles and personnel alike.

Chris Sanderson, of Stephen Sanderson Transport, commented: “Security and efficiency are essential to our operations, and Hörmann’s systems have consistently delivered both. The new bollards provide added control and reassurance at one of our busiest access points. As their transport partner we have worked with Hörmann over many years, and when it comes to updating and securing our sites we value their technical expertise and attention to detail.”

The project was fully project-managed by FBS Hörmann’s Perimeter Protection division, working closely with civil contractors and the Sanderson Transport team to coordinate installation and commissioning.

This latest installation reinforces the long-standing partnership between Hörmann and Sanderson Transport. Previous projects at the site include the installation of 3-metre-high automated swing gates spanning an 8-metre opening, a 16-metre automated sliding gate, and a set of master/slave automated barriers, plus the installation of Decotherm industrial roller shutter doors across the goods handling and storage areas.

Tom Kirk Head of the Perimeter Protection Division at FBS Hörmann, added: “It’s been a pleasure to continue our partnership with Stephen Sanderson Transport. The Security Line bollards provide a robust and responsive access solution designed for the high demands of logistics operations. Our project management team worked closely with both the client and contractors to ensure a seamless and efficient installation.”

Gateway Automation Wins Gate & Barrier Contractor of the Year

Gateway Automation has been named the winner of the Gate and Barrier Contractor of the Year award at the 2025 Association of Fencing Industries UK Fencing Awards. The category was sponsored for the third consecutive year by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), with the ceremony taking place on Thursday 13th November at Mercedes Benz World. The event brought together leading voices from across the fencing and automation sector.

The Gate and Barrier Contractor of the Year category recognises excellence in precision, attention to detail, innovation and creative approach. Entrants were required to submit a full Risk Assessment Method Statement, a Compliance and Residual Risk Assessment, and a Declaration of Conformity. These documents formed an essential part of the judging process and helped demonstrate safety, regulatory compliance and professional integrity.

DHF’s Senior Training & Compliance Officer, Steve Hill, represented the federation on the judging panel and helped evaluate entries, selecting both the finalists and the overall category winner. And DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery Stevens, presented the award to Gateway Automation during an evening that also featured an entertaining keynote from Perry McCarthy, known to many as the original Stig from Top Gear.

“DHF is proud to support the Gate and Barrier Contractor of the Year category and continues to champion high standards of professionalism, training and technical competence across the industry,” commented Patricia. “The 2025 AFI Awards once again highlighted the depth of talent within the sector and celebrated the organisations that are raising expectations of quality and safety.”

Gateway Automation was selected ahead of fellow finalists, Alpha Rail, and the Littlewood Group. Speaking following the announcement, Ollie Male, Sales and Estimator at Gateway Automation, expressed pride in the recognition. He noted that the team was delighted to be involved in the AFI Awards and praised the organisation of the event, the impressive venue and the warm and engaging hosts. He added that the award holds particular significance for the team because it confirms that their commitment to quality has been recognised by respected industry experts.

In his reflections, Ollie also highlighted the role that DHF’s training and membership has played in developing the company’s technical confidence. He explained that the team regularly receives enquiries that relate directly to the training they undertook through the federation, and as a result of this training, staff are able to provide customers with accurate advice that aligns with the expectations of industry regulators. Gateway Automation completed the ABBE Level 2 Award in Automated Gate and Traffic Barrier Safety Accreditation and found the programme valuable because it addressed the real issues that frontline workers encounter every day. Ollie described the course as ‘essential’ for helping companies navigate technical challenges and deliver consistently high quality outcomes.

Pete Clark at AFI said: “Every year I am blown away by the talent, pride and professionalism within this industry. These awards started in 2022 with a tight budget and a lot of favours – and to see how far they’ve come is a testament to the incredible people who make fencing what it is. From apprentices starting their journey to the contractors, manufacturers and suppliers driving innovation, this industry never stands still – and that’s something worth celebrating.

"Thanks to all the sponsors and the great AFI team that make the awards possible. I have always said that good fencing keeps people safe, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Gates & Barriers category. These systems protect homes, businesses and critical sites every day. The quality of entries this year shows a group of contractors who take that responsibility seriously, and I am proud to see the expertise in this category growing year on year.”

FenceX 2025 Breaks Records and Brings the Fencing Industry Together

The UK fencing industry came together in record numbers on 15th October for FenceX 2025 at NAEC Stoneleigh – and the result was a day packed with innovation, collaboration, and inspiration.

With record numbers of visitors and more than 80 exhibitors showcasing the latest in fencing products, technology, and best practice, this year’s show was the largest and most dynamic FenceX ever. From the exhibition floor to the outdoor demonstration areas, the energy and enthusiasm were evident throughout the day.

Live Action, Innovation and Expertise

One of the biggest draws of the show was the largest-ever destruction testing schedule seen at a UK fencing exhibition. Crowds gathered throughout the day to watch leading manufacturers – including Barkers, Zaun, CLD, IAE, Alexandra, Henry Squire & Son, and First Fence – put their products through rigorous real-world testing. These live demonstrations not only showcased the strength and durability of modern fencing solutions but also highlighted the continual innovation taking place within the sector.

The Gate Automation Zone, delivered in partnership with the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), and First Fence was another major attraction. Featuring live demonstrations, compliance guidance, and expert advice, the zone proved invaluable for contractors, specifiers, and clients keen to understand more about automated access solutions

Best Practice in Action

Outside, the AFI & AFA Best Practice Day brought practical skills and expert techniques to life. Following the sell-out spring event at Harper Adams, the outdoor demonstrations at FenceX featured two full fencing lines – one timber and one metal – covering everything from deer and horse netting to stock fencing and electric top rails.

Delegates learned how to adapt approaches for strainers, struts, turners, and wire work across different ground conditions and added even more value to a packed programme.

Knowledge Sharing and Future Thinking

Education was also at the heart of the show, with a busy seminar programme tackling key topics including apprenticeships, standards, safety, compliance, and business development. Speakers from across the industry – including training experts, standards bodies, and leading contractors – shared practical insights and answered audience questions in well-attended sessions throughout the day.

Perks, Prizes and Networking

Visitors who pre-registered were welcomed with a free breakfast roll and coffee to start their day, and hundreds took the opportunity to network, meet suppliers, and explore new business opportunities.

One lucky visitor will also be enjoying a weekend in Ghent, courtesy of Locinox, with Eurostar travel, hotel accommodation, and a private tour of the company’s cutting-edge factory included. The prize draw, entered by dropping name badges into a collection bucket on departure, proved a popular finale to a memorable day – the winners presentation will take place at the UK Fencing Industry Awards on 13th November at Mercedes Benz World.

With this year’s event setting a new benchmark, the AFI is already planning ahead for future editions. For those who couldn’t make it, highlights, photos, and videos will be shared on the FenceX website and social media channels in the coming weeks.

CGT Security Ltd: Ticking all the specification requirements

Promoted as Reading’s newest destination and based directly outside the main entrance to Reading train station for ultra-easy connectivity, is a new, design-led development called Station Hill. The six and a half acre site is one of the largest development schemes outside of London.

Combining leisure facilities, restaurants, premier office space and residential dwellings, Station Hill is designed to be a vibrant mixed-use space fostering a “live-work-play” environment and is a project between the joint venture company, Lincoln MGT and Reading Borough Council.

Creating this type of neighbourhood hub inevitably means new parking areas are required too – and as space is always at a premium with such developments, the car park is an underground area with a specification calling for 25% free open air shutters with a LPS 1175 SR2 security rating and a large opening width of over 7 metres.

Whilst perforated shutters to give free air circulation are not unusual, combining the security rating with the large opening area is a more specific combination, with few manufacturers that are able to meet these criteria.

The Intimidator industrial shutter range manufactured by CGT Security, is a collection of high performance shutters with LPS 1175 Issue 8 certified security levels up to and including D10 (SR4) and is also available in larger widths.

The Intimidator IR2 is available in aluminium, stainless steel and galvanised steel with perforations, and can span an opening of up to 8 metres. This made it an ideal choice for both the loading bay shutter as well as the car park shutter, as these both had widths of over 7m. The Intimidator products are also available with a choice of locking options and in this case the client chose solenoid locking.

Being an iconic development for the area, the architects involved also wanted to ensure that the shutter would not detract from the appearance of their design, and as the Intimidator offers attractive styling and was matched to their specific RAL 7021 colour with a satin finish, this gave them exactly the aesthetic that they were looking to achieve.

New ASO Radar Set to Replace Conventional Safety Devices

ASO’s new LISENS scan safety radar system is set to revolutionise the automation industry by providing an exciting new solution for automatic traffic barriers, gates and industrial doors.

This innovative system takes advantage of proven microwave radar technology to provide the industry with the first-of-its-kind, fully compliant (EN12453), safety-rated radar detection system for pedestrians and vehicles.

After over 24 months of field testing and in-house development, ASO is confident in the solutions' capabilities and the benefits they can bring to manufacturers and installers alike.

The LISENS scan system consists of a controller and up to 6 radar head units connected through a simple 2-wire bus system, allowing for easy connection and expansion.

Configuration is carried out using an embedded web server within the controller, which connects via an onboard secure Wi-Fi hotspot.

Once physically fitted, the system can be commissioned in minutes through the onboard software.

A selectable safety-rated output (8K2, FSS, NC) compatible with all major control systems is present.

In addition, the system has 2 further configurable ‘Warning’ zones that can be easily set up to carry out functions such as virtual loop detectors for vehicles or pedestrian-only triggering zones through their own selectable output.

With the traffic barrier version's launch scheduled for Q1 2025, ASO and its worldwide partners will be in a prime position to provide a complete, non-contact safety radar solution to its customers and distribution partners worldwide.

Stuart Roddy, National Sales Manager for EasyGates Direct, said:

“This system combines all the benefits of current non-contact solutions (Type E devices according to EN12453) with additional features and benefits that radar technology brings.

“We are convinced this system will solve many technical challenges for our customers where other technologies have previously faltered.

“Combined with our UK-wide dealer network and excellent technical support & training facilities, we look forward to ushering in a new era in non-contact safety for the UK barrier/gate/door markets.”

More details of this fantastic new safety product are available through ASO’s UK competence partner, EasyGates Direct, or via ASO’s own web and social media channels.

DHF announces the launch of its virtual learning programme

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced that from September 2024, it will be launching a new virtual learning facility; courses will be delivered via an online classroom, connecting DHF trainers and delegates in real-time to complete training wherever they might be.

At the very heart of DHF’s operations is its extensive training programmes, created to keep the industry informed on the importance of putting safe and compliant products on the market.

“Over the past 10 years, DHF has trained more than 5,000 delegates on DHF courses either face-to-face or via the Distance Learning Programme,” explains DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “Virtual learning will combine elements of both and provide delegates with the opportunity to complete a DHF training course remotely at a location of choice but still receive live interaction from a DHF trainer and other delegates attending the course. Our trainers are renowned experts in the industry (a reputation we are extremely proud of) and provide a wealth of experience and knowledge.”

Examinations will be completed remotely throughout the course via the Online Training Academy, enabling delegates to receive instant results. Once the course has been completed, successful delegates will be able to download their certificates from the Online Training Academy.

“Virtual learning eliminates the need to travel and provides accessibility to DHF training courses wherever delegates might be located,” says Patricia. “These enable savings on travel costs, time away from site, and contribute to the reduction of carbon footprint.”

Virtual learning is currently only available for the Level 2 Awards in Safety for Automated Gates & Traffic Barriers and Industrial & Garage Doors, and as with face-to-face training this course will run from 9am - 5pm with given breaks throughout the day. ABBE Accreditation can still be added onto virtual learning courses starting from £40+ VAT.

The first virtual Level 2 Award for Industrial & Garage Doors is Thursday 19th September: https://bit.ly/3SqjLBN

The first virtual Level 2 Award for Automated Gates & Traffic Barriers is Monday 30th September: https://bit.ly/4di4I5b

The Summer Issue of Door Industry Journal is available to read online now!

Good morning and Welcome to the Summer 2024 Issue of the DIJ.

Since our last issue, the election has been and gone and a new administration is in place.

From a sector perspective, this may be cause for optimism, as Labour has promised to build 1.5 million homes over the next five years and unblock the UK’s notoriously sluggish planning system. And where there are new houses, there’s work for us all.

Will it happen? We can only hope so. And it may not be until after the summer and the long parliamentary recess before we get a clearer idea of how these plans will become reality.

But while you wait, you at least have our summer issue to get stuck into.

Here are just some of the stories we cover inside:

  • It’s a milestone birthday for Chamberlain Doors, which is celebrating 50 years in the business (page 6)

  • Remembering the life and career of Thomas J. Hörmann (page 16)

  • Discussing the Internet of Things – and the opportunities and challenges it presents for the industry (page 22)

  • The Pegasus Door Company wins big at the Suffolk Small Business Awards (page 56)

  • Read about the long and successful partnership between SWS UK and Somfy (page 62)

  • Trojon Roller Doors has just released a brand new samples pack that showcases its entire range (page 64)

  • A new Managing Director has taken the reigns at FBS Hörmann (page 80)

  • Alucorb announces a newly extended 25-year guarantee on HorizAL aluminium gates (page 90)

  • Owen Jones - Technical Director at Distinction Doors – discusses the importance of third-party certification for composite fire doors (page 106)

  • Last but not least, a bit of summer fun (page 122)

OK, that lot should keep you going! I hope you have a relaxing summer break and enjoy some decent weather.

I’ll be back with you again in the autumn.

Installers Optimistic about 2024

Professional installers have a positive outlook on the market for automation projects in the year ahead, according to the latest customer survey by BFT Automation.

The survey of installers found that 81% believed the market for new installations is still growing, with 63% of responders reporting that the automation element of their business was either ‘busy’ or ‘very busy’ in 2023.

BFT is a leading manufacturer of automation technology that controls access for people and vehicles in a range of environments.

The company surveyed installers who fit BFT products, including swing and sliding gate operators, automatic barriers and security bollards.

Matthew Batson, Sales Operations Director at BFT said:

“Despite the ongoing impact of the cost-of-living crisis, installers continue to experience a strong demand for their services.

“This latest sign of optimism is a testament to the ongoing need for automation solutions – whether that’s in a commercial, public or residential setting.”

“While the need for home security solutions such as automated gates was particularly strong during the pandemic, there remains a demand for solutions that provide added security for the home.

“While the upcoming Protect Duty legislation is likely to drive further requirement for options such as security bollards in publicly accessible venues.”

BFT Automation is part of the Somfy group. For more information visit: www.bftautomationuk.com
