Belfox European expansion will aid UK market

GATE technology has been in the bloodstream of Edgar Fierle for more than 30 years. His electro engineering background had been a more than adequate foundation on which to enter the access control industry.

Yet, even he could not have forecast the success that Belfox has had in becoming a major power in European markets. Today, Belfox enjoys a 70 per cent share in the Austrian market; 60 per cent in Germany and 40 per cent in both Belgium and the Netherlands; has a substantial presence in France, Poland, Denmark and Sweden.

The company manufactures over 4,000 sliding gate openers a year for the Austrian market alone and therefore it is no surprise that it is investing more than 5 million Euros in a new production plant on the outskirts of Frankfurt. With 8,000 sq. metres of space it is double the size of the company's current facility and is scheduled to come on stream at the beginning of 2017.

'We need this new plant to cope with the current production and also for expansion into other parts of the world,' said Fierle. 'It is what we must have.'
Today, the company is headed by both himself and Rrezarta Beqiraj who took over ownership some three years ago, and together they have spearheaded the progress of Belfox and together look to move forward.

While Europe is naturally the main focus for Belfox, it has not been oblivious to the potential offered by a growing automatic gate market within the UK. Hence two years ago it established a UK operation.

'Yes, it is a different market. Gate safety in the UK is moving differently and we've had to adapt. At the start Europe introduced safety norms, but the UK has taken those further. Like the pinch points on the hinges. It has to be less than 100mm and that is only in the UK. There is pressure in the UK for greater safety because of what has happened and that means we have to understand that and work on what the market here wants. There is a different market structure. Here the focus is very much on safety and, of course, price.'

With its clear message of not wishing to manufacture gates, but working alongside manufacturers to create products, Belfox has built several links with major players. The success of these 'partnerships' gives them confidence for the future.

'We have learnt together,' he said. 'That has been of great benefit because it has given us experience and we have been able to build on that. Ours is the technology of the drive portals. To make them visually good and design so that it enhances the look of the gate, as well as having all the safety features and control panels with safety features. The market might be very focused on price but it also wants something that sets one manufacturer apart from another. Something different and that's why we work with each company individually.'

Fierle though is an engineer who is always looking forward and knows only too well that today's technology is the foundation for tomorrow's innovation.

'Yes, there is always something new. Today investigations into safety electronics show that it could become so sophisticated that we don't need safety edges. We are developing motors in line with the latest energy consumption regulations that are no more 0.05 watts and of course there is smart technology which gives greater freedom and means problems can be identified no matter where you are. Solar technology is another area but we have been doing that for several years and there is a lot of competition.'

Fierle is not one to speculate about the market, but his experience, and that of the Belfox team as one of the leading innovators in Europe on gate automation means that they know what the market wants, probably before it even is aware that it is available.

As Belfox continues to grow its markets under the guidance of owner Rrezarta Beqiraj with the onset of its new factory, there is little doubt that it will build its UK operation.

'Yes, it is working well in the UK and we have some good partnerships. We know that more will follow. For us it is not about volume, but about helping manufacturers build products that offer something different that puts them ahead in the market’

Why should you install an intercom that does so much more?

Today with the explosion of the internet and the free availability of information, together with immediate access to a world of products simply a click away, yesterday’s security products are being challenged and today new solutions are needed.

In the world of access system design & Installation, Safety and Security are being compromised constantly and a balance between each is becoming ever more necessary.

When it comes to restricted access anywhere, manual override has to be built into every system and consequentially this aspect often needs greater consideration.

  • To be locked in or out is no longer the only question.
  • How and What if are now of equal importance.

If security is important and forced access or unwanted override easier to abuse, owners need an alternative solution! ‘Alerts’ and quick notification may be just the ideal option.

Telguard units have Alert inputs that can send a customised message, to ten phones of the owner’s choice upon activation. One full second of the contact making or breaking will cause the messages to be sent.

Gate forced, door left open, barrier vandalised, etc. all within a second of it happening, a message is automatically texted to numerous people - allowing action to be taken while it is still relevant and increasing the chance of catching someone in the act....

Vauxhall Confirms Two More Electric Vehicles as Tech-Leap Repeats History

Vauxhall will embark on an electric-focused technology drive, which will transform its range over the next two years at a similar rate to its first heady days as a car manufacturer at the start of the last century.

Two all-new models – next-generation versions of the Mokka X SUV and Vivaro van – will be fully electrified, and go in to production in 2020. Both vehicles have been sales hits for the Luton company in their current generations, with the Mokka X still making regular appearances in the UK’s top-ten bestsellers lists, six years after it was launched.

In addition, Vauxhall has announced that two more electrified vehicles – the Grandland X PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) and the battery-electric, next-generation Corsa - will go on sale in the first half of 2019.

The Grandland X PHEV’s propulsion system will develop the equivalent of up to 300PS, and will come with e-All Wheel Drive technology. At the other end of the scale, the Corsa BEV will electrify what is arguably the UK’s best known automotive nameplate, with Vauxhall promising to bring the car to market at a competitive price.

As the UK’s oldest surviving British brand, Vauxhall is used to embracing new technology. It produced the world’s first sports car, and the UK’s first 100mph car. It made Britain’s first unitary construction car, and transformed the driving experience for thousands of motorists.

But only in its first seven years of car production – between 1903 and 1910 – did Vauxhall advance technologically at the same rate that it anticipates it will between now and 2025, thanks to electrification.

In 1903, it produced the 5hp – a horseless carriage, steered by tiller, and driven by chain, from a single-cylinder, single-litre engine. By 1910, its new Prince Henry model, the world’s first sports car, could carry four adults in comfort and achieve a belting 65mph, thanks to its 3-litre engine, four-speed transmission – and it had a proper steering wheel.

Progress of a different kind, for sure, but progress that has never been matched, until now…

Garador Raises Money for Macmillan Cancer Support

Garador, recognised for its leadership in the design and manufacture of domestic garage doors, has now shown it can handle oven doors as well!

Garador employees recently gave their time to cooking the best possible cakes for a coffee morning to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The results, including some unique recipes and designs, raised £300 for the charity.

The array of cakes on offer was quite incredible with everything from sweet treats like Lemon Drizzle cake through to savouries like delicious home-made sausage rolls.

The staff thoroughly enjoyed the event and raised some money for such a worthwhile charity. Organiser, Garador’s George Aldred, said he was very impressed with the culinary talents of his colleagues.

“It was a great morning and what could be better than eating cake for a good cause,” he said.

Heras launches new Bi-fold Gate range for High-Traffic secure environments

Heras, experts in perimeter protection, has launched a range of high security bi-fold gate solutions designed to provide safe entrance control in a multitude of environments and applications where space, speed, safety and security matter.

Organisations can rely on the continuity of their business operations due to the sGate’s highly reliable design that allows for fast and continuous operation and traffic flow. The sGate, which seamlessly integrates with other Heras perimeter security solutions, was launched in September across Europe.

The sGate range has been specifically developed as a functional solution to combine the speed of a barrier with the sealing functions of a sliding gate. The gate opens and closes within a matter of seconds, providing quick and controlled entry, as well as locking securely to prevent any unauthorised vehicle or pedestrian access. This is delivered by Heras’ patented double driveshaft mechanism, which provides optimal force distribution from drive to gate leaf to ensure a very smooth and low wear operation and therefore minimal maintenance.

Heras is offering three sGate options to suit different application areas. The first is sGate trackless solution - which is the industry standard – this model is ideal for environments where unrestricted opening is important or when a bottom track is not convenient (as it may be exposed to sand or stones by nature of the application) and where the gate needs to smoothly integrate with the fence line. This option is also suitable for very wide passage openings (up to eight metres).

Heras is also offering two additional options to meet other, specific organisational requirements. The sGate bottom guided (top image) solution is ideal for unrestricted opening heights or where the gate is frequently used for heavy vehicles. Its full concrete foundation covers the entire gate opening width, this eliminates the risk of a column being tilted out of position as heavy vehicles pass through which would otherwise cause the gate to not close properly.

The gate can also integrate smoothly with most fence lines. Finally, the sGate top guided solution can be used in situations where there is a specific height restriction, for example, in an underground car park, or if there is a requirement for the opening to be completely sealed to prevent intruders climbing over the gate.

The sGate range, manufactured with high strength S355 quality steel, has been tested to meet the latest industry standards and guidelines for powered gates, including safety EN 13241. With its column design providing a very stable base, the gate can withstand the more extreme weather conditions as it has been accredited to meet windloads of up to 700 N/m2 (= windclass 3). Each gate is equipped with ten safety edges and two detection loops and tubular hinges, which removes any crushing risk at column / leaf point.

The gates also include two independent sets of photocell detectors each with their own communication channel, making it impossible for them to influence each other, and thereby guaranteeing correct operation. The photocells are instrumental in maintaining absolute safety; if they detect an obstruction, the gate will immediately stop and hold still. Before the gate starts moving, the control system first checks the status of the safety edges and photocells to ensure there are no faults.

Emile Suerink, Product Category Manager at Heras comments:
“Building on a huge installed base of automated gates and our extensive in-house knowledge and experience in developing and maintaining gate solutions, introducing the new sGate range further strengthens our end to end perimeter security proposition. Our focus is ensuring extreme reliability and safety for our customers, who are demanding more robust security standards in a world of increasing risk and volatility.”

The sGate is available in a range of height, infills and free opening width combinations. Additional safety devices such as loop detection, traffic lights, flashing lights, sirens or extra photocells, are available to further expand the solution. The sGate range integrates with almost any access control solution.

Heras offers a complete portfolio of accredited high security solutions designed to protect the most valuable assets and infrastructure of a range of organisations, industries and communities across the world.

IN2 Access: Providing Bespoke Solutions with LED Traffic Light System

IN2 Access are pleased to share a unique case study outlining a problem solved for a customer looking for a bespoke solution.

If necessity is the mother of all invention, then who is the father?  Some might jokingly say “laziness,” but at IN2 Access, we prefer to attribute “resourcefulness” as the paternal relation.  Such was the case recently when IN2’s Director, Kane Tetley, was contacted by a customer who wanted a unique solution for a standard traffic light application.

“IN2’s customer wanted to prevent traffic coming into the loading bay while goods are loaded and unloaded,” explained Kane.
“Simple enough, but the problem was “due to the access and egress points, six sets of traffic lights [were] required, with the most distant traffic light being about 20 metres away from where the gates are activated.”

Controlling all six lights with a single controller spread over such a distance was the challenge and where “resourcefulness” came into the equation.

IN2 Access’s RFGate 2.2 receiver is a popular solution for a single gate/light combination, but how to integrate all six sets of lights with a single controller?  “Fortunately, the area to be monitored has the access controlled by a set of manual swing gates [that we were] able to connect a ‘wicket door’ transmitter and magnet to,” said Kane.

The “wicket door” switch is not something normally used in the UK, as a separate door is normally required for pedestrian access, but in this case, it was the perfect solution.

Kane concludes, “The wicket door transmitter was programmed into each receiver controlling the traffic lights, thus, switching all the traffic lights simultaneously from green to red, and back to green again when the gates is closed.”

Problem solved and another happy customer.  Going the extra mile and doing the research necessary to find the right solution has always been a core value at IN2 Access.  Sometimes a simple tweak to an existing product is all that’s needed to solve a unique problem.

Priory Launches The GM95 – A New Breed Of Roller Shutter

The Priory Shutter & Door Co. Ltd, the West Midlands-based roller shutter door specialist, has announced the launch of a brand new roller shutter – the GM95

Priory is already recognised across the door industry as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of industrial, commercial and domestic roller shutters, and is renowned for instigating many beneficial changes in design, trend and legislation. Priory, for example, was the first company in the UK to carry out compliance testing on roller shutters.

So, a lot of interest and expectation will greet the news that Priory has launched the GM95.

This insulated industrial roller shutter is a newly-designed improvement on one of Priory’s most successful existing products - the Insuroll insulated industrial roller shutter, which has been in production since 1995.

The Insuroll is a very popular product – not least because the door curtain is constructed by two separate 100mm galvanised steel skins, slid together to create one slat with a polystyrene core, thus creating a very strong, wind resistant curtain.

The new GM95 retains all the advantages that has made Insuroll such a success, but with many major improvements. These include a curtain with a better strength to weight ratio - due to a compressed PUV foam core - allowing for a smaller drive motor. The GM95 wraps tighter, requiring much less headroom than for the Insuroll - so is a much more compact door that will suit more applications - and can have double-glazed vision panels applied into the curtain for applications that require light or vision. The GM95 has a 'U' value of 1.1 w/m2k, a wind class rating of +/-5 (the same as Insuroll), and 22 dba sound reduction.

Like the Insuroll, the GM95 is available in a range of 19 traditional plastisol colours, but as the slat is constructed from one rolled skin, the plastisol is automatically applied to both internal and external faces. Aside from this there are a further 14 PVC laminated finishes, which are anti-scratch and allow for a more modern range of colours. The GM95 can also be produced to a bespoke colour – as it is available in a galvanised steel finish, which can then be polyester powder-coated to any RAL or BS colour.

The GM95 is driven by a range of Ellard motors (recognised as the UK’s leading supplier of roller shutter door drives) and can have a direct drive, flange-mounted, high-speed or tubular motor, to suit the application and use of the door.

What’s more, as with all Priory products, the GM95 has been designed with the installer in mind, so every effort has been made to ensure that fitting is as trouble-free and as quick as possible, whilst retaining a cost effective, quality product. Also, the manufacturing process of the GM95 is much quicker than the Insuroll, meaning reduced lead times.

As Simon Perks - General Manager at Priory - says, the development of the GM95 has been driven by demand:
“Due to the increased development of new warehouses, distribution centres and agricultural buildings, our clients are increasingly looking for energy efficient solutions when securing their properties,”
He explains: “Insulated roller shutters offer a more compact alternative to the sectional door, and the GM95 is a roller shutter that ticks all the boxes. We’ve used all the skills and knowledge acquired during 50 years in the business to create it, and the result is a roller shutter that meets the needs of the modern world, whilst retaining all the virtues of an old favourite.”

Lord Montagu to start VW Santa Run to hospital

Lord Montagu will be waving off a festive convoy of over 100 VWs today, Sunday 2nd December as they set off from Beaulieu to deliver Christmas presents to youngsters at the Piam Brown unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Scores of brightly coloured VW campers and cars will start their journey as Lord Montagu waves the chequered flag to start the New Forest VW Santa Run in the grounds of the National Motor Museum.

Laden with gifts from kind donations, drivers will be accompanied by motorcycle outriders as they head to the unit for children and teenagers with cancer and haematological disorders. In the fifth annual charity run convoy, they will take presents for youngsters as well as the hospital doctors and nurses.

Event organiser Phil Ashby said:
“We are very excited about this year’s Santa Run and really looking forward to another great day. With increasing numbers each year, we are expecting at least as many VWs as last year and, as always, the decorations get more creative every year.”

VW drivers will get into the Christmas spirit by decorating their vehicles and themselves in festive attire, with Lord Montagu presenting prizes to the best-dressed van and best-dressed family. Look out for Rudolf, elves and even Father Christmas!

Beaulieu will continue its festive celebration as its first Christmas at Beaulieu light trail transforms the grounds of the attraction until December 24th. Explore the Fire Garden Cloister, then walk through a Tunnel of Light festooned by a canopy of over 100,000 twinkling pea-lights on the one-mile trail.

See the dancing lights on the walls of Palace House, follow a path of giant icicle shards, enter the Meadow of Light with thousands of fibre optics and listen to the ‘singing’ tree finale. Catch a glimpse of Father Christmas and his elves on the veteran bus and enjoy traditional fairground rides, with marshmallows roasted on a fire pit. For tickets and details see www.beaulieu.co.uk/Christmas

From December 22nd to January 6th Beaulieu’s daytime visitors can enjoy a traditional Victorian Christmas in Palace House, joining the Montagu family, played by costumed actors, as they rehearse the pantomime Aladdin and prepare for Christmas and New Year festivities in 1889.

Feel the warm glow of carols and punch by a roaring log fire, see traditional decorations and towering Christmas trees in every room, then talk to Lord Montagu’s cook and her kitchen maid as they prepare for Christmas Day lunch.

For more information see www.beaulieu.co.uk or call 01590 612345.

Mansfield Garage Doors Celebrates 50 Years

Leading Garador installer, Mansfield Garage Doors, have just had their 50th year in business and to celebrate they ran a competition to win a Garador garage door.

Working with leading garage door manufacturer Garador to offer the door, the focus of the competition was to look into people’s garages to see what’s behind their garage door as people use their garages for all sorts these days, from home gyms through to general storage. Entrants needed to supply a poem or lyrical piece, describing what is inside their garage.

Colin Clarke, a taxi driver from Mansfield, came in head and shoulders above the other entrants with a really funny poem about garages. Colin chose a Garador Carlton in Traffic White as his prize, which is one of Garador’s most popular garage doors, due to its durable components and long-lasting design.

Rachel O’Connor from Mansfield Garage Doors commented:
“The competition attracted a rush of entries describing what was kept in garages. We had a lot of excellent entries, but winner Colin Clarke came up with a poem which we all agreed stood out from the rest.”

Colin’s winning poem was:

"Here’s our garage, we call it Fred,
And because of what’s in it, it thinks it’s a shed,
No cars or motorbikes has it seen,
But lawnmowers and barbecues and a washing machine,
Here it’s stood for 40 years and now the time has took its toll,
The door no longer smoothly glides, but stays ajar like an open goal,
You have to open it with great care,
Because like a trap it will ensnare,
It jumps off its rails and crashes down,
It hits my head and makes me frown,
I can’t take this pain and anguish no more,
I really need a new garage door!!"
