UL Solutions Telford Centre Helps Reduce Time to Market

Mike Wass, business manager with the Built Environment group at UL Solutions, explains how the Telford testing facility can help door and window manufacturers get products tested and certified in as little as four weeks.

Testing construction products in the United Kingdom (U.K.) has proved challenging for many years. The introduction of the U.K. Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking, the uncertainty that came with it and an evolving regulatory landscape alongside routine testing needs have caused an influx in demand that saw some manufacturers waiting months to get a testing slot.

UL Solutions opened its newest testing laboratory at its Telford centre in the U.K. to provide a single location for door, window, hardware and building envelope system manufacturers and to help relieve the backlog. U.K. Accreditation Service (UKAS)-accredited test and third-party certification facilities provide mechanical testing and certification for physical security, durability and performance of doors, windows and hardware.

Furnished with state-of-the-art testing equipment, the Telford facility can accommodate a variety of window and door configurations, testing to a range of industry-recognised standards, including PAS 24: 2022 and the BS 6375 series.

In some cases, the experts at the Telford laboratory can do single tests for PAS 24, enhanced security performance requirements for doorsets and windows in the U.K., and BS 6375 Part 1, Performance of Windows and Doors – Classification for Weathertightness and Guidance on Selection and Specification, in as little as two weeks. The resulting reports are also available within two weeks of testing.

Secured by Design

For manufacturers wanting to enter the U.K. market, verifying performance through independent assessment proves that both products and procedures meet accepted performance standards.

Accreditation looks beyond just the products for the police-backed Secured by Design (SBD) scheme. This is where the vital third-party certification element comes into the equation.

UL Solutions’ approach to PAS 24, which can help demonstrate that a product meets SBD requirements and the relevant fit-for-purpose standards, is not just about mechanical and manual checks on the product; it also involves scrutinising the factory and manufacturing processes.

If the product meets requirements, UL Solutions will issue a certificate allowing the manufacturer to promote the product as certified to PAS 24. The product then undergoes annual audits thereafter to confirm that it meets the requirements and to demonstrate that its compliance was not incidental.

Trusted partner

Manufacturers working with UL Solutions can access safety science expertise with global safety and testing knowledge. UL Solutions serves as a trusted partner to global businesses, helping them demonstrate compliance in the U.K. market. For example, Schüco UK, a global manufacturer of aluminium and steel window, door and façade systems, has been utilising the facilities at Telford as part of its ongoing testing procedures.

“At Schüco UK, we take huge pride in the testing and certification of our products that support our partners and end users,” said Paul Feldwick, product manager for steel systems, fire and security, testing and certification at Schüco UK.

“Given the size of our product portfolio and the rapidly changing marketplace we operate in, the positive ‘can do’ attitude, coupled with their commitment to quality, were key for us in selecting UL Solutions as our testing provider,” Feldwick continued.

For more information or to book a test, contact the UL Solutions team at Telford:

From hypercars to hyperbikes: McLaren launches debut electric mountain bike range

Renowned for game-changing supercars and hypercars such as the McLaren P1TM, luxury supercar maker McLaren Automotive is ushering in the era of the electric hyperbikes with its debut range of electric bikes unveiled today.

Taking inspiration from the company’s award-winning supercars, the new limited-edition four- bike range extends McLaren’s extreme performance-focused design and technology into the electric two-wheeled world for the first time.

Designed by the same teams responsible for supercars like the electrified lightweight McLaren Artura hybrid supercar, the first-ever McLaren e-bikes embrace signature McLaren attributes such as carbon-fibre construction and next-generation electrification to deliver an authentically McLaren high-performance experience.

The e-bikes’ powerful motor enhances their high power-to-weight ratio, a pivotal attribute mirrored in the development of every McLaren supercar.

Designed with torque figures that surpass the standard of other premium e-bikes, the McLaren e-bikes have been engineered for class-leading performance.

Further reinforcing the link to supercars, the McLaren design team devised an innovative digital display whose graphics mimic those of the cars’ driver displays.

Ensuring maximum rider engagement and user-friendliness, telemetry information including speed, battery life and range is shown on a full colour integrated LCD panel on the handlebars.

Four distinct models – Extreme 600, Extreme 250, Sport 600, and Sport 250 – each offer the ultimate two-wheel ride, whether on city streets, off-road tracks, or mountain trails.

The flagship McLaren 600 versions vie for the title of the world’s most powerful street-legal electric mountain bike with its Race mode delivering up to 852W of peak power and a top speed of 20mph/32kph.

Two electric mountain bike models are available in limited numbers: a 29” hardtail version, and a full-suspension version with 29” front wheel, 27.5” rear wheel, 145mm of rear travel, and 160mm of fork travel.

In total, four models complete the range, the Extreme 600W and Extreme 250W feature SRAM wireless XX Eagle Transmission 12-speed drivetrain and the Sport 600W and Sport 250W feature mechanical SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain.

McLaren Sport
The ideal, all-purpose mountain bike that is just as at home off the beaten track as on aggressive single track, with integrated componentry and minimalist frame design for pure McLaren style.

As with McLaren cars, there is a choice of power modes, selectable via the digital display on the integrated cockpit:
Off – No motor assist
Eco – Energy conservation for long rider
Trail – A set-it-and-forget-it balance of power and efficiency
Sport – Extra power output for when the trail demands more
Race – Max power and max torque

McLaren Extreme
The Extreme is a full-suspension electric mountain bike designed for maximum off-road performance, control, and comfort. All five power modes are as per the McLaren Sport.

The Sport and Extreme models are both shod with Pirelli tyres.

Availability of McLaren e-bikes is limited. Customers can secure one by visiting www.mclarenbikes.com.

*600W versions will only be available to purchase in the United States

Jeld-Wen brings Swedoor Interior Doorsets to the UK Commercial Market

The UK’s leading doorset manufacturer, JELD-WEN, has enhanced its product portfolio with a new, high-quality bespoke interior doorset range by Swedoor.

Forming part of the global JELD-WEN group, Swedoor is well known across Europe for its high-quality craftsmanship, with a dedicated project factory in Denmark. The bespoke interior doorset range is now available to the UK commercial market with lead times from seven weeks, ideally suited for a range of commercial applications, including education, leisure and healthcare projects.

Upholding JELD-WEN’s commitment to compliance, the Swedoor doorset range has been tested and certified to UK standards, with a fire rating of either FD30S or FD60S. Additional third-party IFC Certification gives customers complete assurance that the doors will perform beyond industry requirements for smoke and fire protection.

Alongside a variety of configurations and the choice of a painted, laminated or veneer finish, customers can specify the addition of glass screens and partitions as required, allowing for a fully bespoke and multifunctional design. The glass partitions are independently tested and certified to EN standards in conjunction with the doorset and offer up to 30 – 60 minutes of integrity and partial insulation protection (EW30-EW60).

Providing enhanced acoustic performance, the doorsets carry noise-reducing benefits with an acoustic rating available up to Rw38dB, depending on the thickness of the door. Suited to both public and private areas, this insulating design ensures quieter spaces can be created without compromising the aesthetic of the building’s interior.

Further customisation is offered through various door edge options, to improve durability and ensure it is fit for purpose; built-in finger protection, which helps to prevent fingers from becoming trapped in hinges and frames; and a wide range of ironmongery can be catered for, offering protection in high traffic areas, such as healthcare and education settings. The interior doorsets are also available as sliding doors, an ideal space-saving solution for connecting or adjoining rooms.

Kate Painter, UK Marketing Manager at JELD-WEN, said:
“Backed by our European brand expertise, the craftsmanship offered by Swedoor’s dedicated production facility in Denmark is showcased through the premium quality of every doorset.
“With market-leading customisation options and a durable finish pairing aesthetics with functionality, we’re confident that this exceptional interior doorset range will improve the experience for our UK customers, providing them with even greater choice and design capabilities for their projects.
“Every JELD-WEN product also carries independent certification to offer the ultimate assurance of compliance, further meeting the unique requirements of modern build projects.”

Hörmann LPU 42 Sectional Doors – New Colours Introduced

Hörmann UK have added two new colours to their LPU 42 sectional garage door range increasing the standard colour options available to 17.

The new colours, Agate grey and Chartwell green, join an array of colours that provide consumers with the opportunity to select a garage door that will subtly co-ordinate with the exterior of their property.

Grey continues to be a popular colour choice amongst consumers when choosing a new garage door, with Anthracite and Slate grey leading the field.

To offer a new take on grey, Hörmann has added Agate grey which provides a lighter, softer shade of grey.

With a hint of green, Agate grey has a more natural tone which is particularly suited to properties constructed from stone or lighter brickwork.

Chartwell green, a cool tone of green, is well-liked by homeowners, particularly as a colour choice for windows and entrance doors.

The addition of the Chartwell green colour option to the LPU 42 range now provides the opportunity to fully harmonise all exterior finishes and provide added kerb appeal to any home.

Available in three finishes - Silkgrain, Slategrain and Woodgrain, the two new colours join a sophisticated colour palette which includes Moss green, Light ivory, and Grey aluminium.

ADSA Launches New Podcast

It’s good to talk! So says the Automatic Door Suppliers Association which has just launched its own podcast – Tech Talk.

The series will feature conversations on topical issues facing the industry and interviews with those who work in it.

The first episode focuses on changes to BS EN 16 005 - a standard that defines safety in use and test methods requirements for power-operated pedestrian door sets. It teases out the main changes of the update and responsibilities that fall upon manufacturers and technicians.

The 10-minute discussion is hosted by ADSA MD Ken Price, in conversation with Technical Training Manager Darren Hyde and Head of Operations Fae Ellor.

The monthly podcast is available through Apple and Android streaming services and can also be accessed through the ADSA website and social media channels. ADSA members can also access episodes through its online Academy.

Tech Talk has been introduced as an extension to ADSA’s existing communication channels and its availability on public streaming channels is intended to make it more accessible to “people on the go”.

Said Ken: “We felt that this was an ideal medium for many of our members, particularly technicians, who may be on the road travelling to different sites. Podcasts provide a bite-sized opportunity to raise awareness of key issues, in a way that can be informative and entertaining.
“People consume media in different ways and at different times – from their daily commute to when they are exercising. By producing Tech Talk as a podcast, we hope to highlight important issues, break them down and examine them in detail but in a way that is easy to access and provides a different take on a variety of subjects.”

It is planned that some episodes of Tech Talk will also be produced as video casts to incorporate visual requirements.

The first episode of Tech Talk can be accessed via ADSA.podbean.com and through streaming platforms.

First Ever Porsche 911 Turbo Returns to Limelight at Concours of Elegance 2024

The Concours of Elegance, Europe’s premier concours d’elegance event, is proud to announce that its 2024 edition will feature one of the most historically significant Porsches of all: the original 1973 911 Turbo ‘Prototype’.

This special car represents the genesis of an icon; it was the first road-going 911 to wear the ‘Turbo’ badge.

The car that will be on show at Hampton Court Palace from 30th August to 1st September – chassis 9113300157 - was the very machine that starred on the Porsche stand at the 1973 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, putting the concept of a turbocharged 911 on the map, setting the template for an enduring performance car legend.

The Turbo concept was created by Porsche to give an indication of what a ‘super’ 911 would look like, combining supreme performance with grand touring luxury.

Finished in a striking one-off silver, with hand-painted ‘Turbo’ script, this show car sold the dream of a 911 with unprecedented levels of turbocharged performance, previewing the production ‘930’ Turbo that would appear two years later.

When introduced in 1975, the 930 would be the fastest production car available in Germany.

Taking a standard 911S as its base, the concept was built up in Porsche’s design studio Style Porsche, with the construction overseen by the firm’s chief engineer, Helmuth Bott.

Ironically, when it made its debut on the glitzy Porsche stand in Frankfurt, the car didn’t actually feature the headline-grabbing, turbo 2.7-litre flat-six motor; it wasn’t ready in time for the show.

Porsche instead modified a conventional naturally aspirated motor, with additional components - including the Turbo itself – mocked up in wood and painted to look real.

Despite its imitation mechanicals, the concept was more than enough to convince and capture the imagination of the show’s crowds.

It was a great hit, and a very significant car for the brand, setting out Porsche’s stall for the coming years.

The concept was in fact, three concepts in one; in addition to debuting the Turbo name, it featured styling elements that would go into the ‘G-Model’ 911, while also previewing the RSR racer and ultra-rare 3.0 RS road car.

The concept showed a much more purposeful and aggressive 911 design language, featuring larger Fuchs wheels and pumped-up bodywork, with dramatically swollen arches and an outlandish ‘whale tail’ rear wing, the latter dramatically improving the cooling and aerodynamic capabilities.

After the seismic first appearance in Frankfurt, the concept toured the world, appearing at motor shows in Paris, Tokyo and Melbourne, before returning home to Stuttgart.

In 1975, Alan Hamilton – a racing driver and the Porsche importer for Australia – was on a visit to the Porsche factory, when he spotted the concept languishing in a corner.

Following its show appearances, the car had been fitted with numerous pre-production RSR parts, acting as a testbed for the racer.

To Hamilton, who was eager to get his hands on the first example of the racing special, the concept represented the fastest route into RSR ownership, so a deal was done and the car was exported to Australia.

The piece of Porsche history subsequently made a handful of competitive outings in the hands of Hamilton, before being traded amongst the Australian Porsche cognoscenti over the coming decades.

It was later exported to the United States in 2010, making a rare public appearance at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance later that year.

After a six-year sojourn in the States, the Turbo concept was purchased by the current owner, who brought it home to Europe.

Now presenting in stunning original condition, looking just as it did under the Motorshow lights back in Frankfurt in ’73 – only now with a genuine turbo motor - it is ready to delight audiences once again at Hampton Court Palace later this year.

This iconic 911 will star alongside 60 other concours cars, drawn from leading private collections the world over.

Outside of the main Concours display, there will be several special features, including the Levitt Concours – dedicated to the most passionate female owners – the 30UNDER30, which celebrates enthusiastic owners under 30 years of age and the Club Trophy, which gathers the very best examples of models from the nation’s best car clubs.

Away from the automotive displays, Concours of Elegance 2024 will again be an occasion of pure luxury, with champagne provided by Charles Heidsieck, picnics by Fortnum & Mason and a collection of art, jewellery and fashion displays.

Presenting Partner A. Lange & Söhne will once again showcase some of its most intricate timepieces.

DHF advises on the important role of Environmental Product Declarations

Tamworth-based trade association, Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is once again stressing the importance of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).

An EPD is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products.

In summary, it measures the environmental ‘footprint’ of a product.

EPD demonstrate the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), detailing ‘cradle to grave’ environmental impact of all processes involved with the manufacture of a product.

This can include extraction and processing of raw materials, transport, all elements of the manufacturing process, dismantling and waste disposal.

DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens explains:

“Although it is not yet compulsory to use EPD in the UK, the market is increasingly self-regulating as manufacturers seek to demonstrate carbon transparency and market their products accordingly.

“Participation in the EPD programme is essential if the construction industry is to meet the growing demand for greater sustainability.

“We are delighted to be able to support our members by offering generic EPD.”

Back in June 2017, DHF was widely considered ‘ahead of the game’ in launching 14 generic EPD (in collaboration with ARGE) - locks, door and window handles, hinges (single axis), lock cylinders, sliding door gear, window fittings, door closers, panic exit devices, shutter hardware, letter boxes, padlocks, glass door gear, electromechanical hardware and push button locks.

Since then, the federation has been educating and informing its members about the role and growing importance of EPD in the sustainability process; a complicated subject, DHF has been plugging the ‘information gap’.

This has effectively enabled members of the Building Hardware Group to meet changing market conditions.

Patricia continues:

“EPD provide manufactures with positive credentials that are key differentiators in today’s market and a powerful way to raise an organisation’s profile and demonstrate environmental commitments.

“In short, they enable the manufacturer to provide quantified data on their product’s environmental impacts, such as embodied carbon, ozone, acidification and more, surpass customer demands and specifications with increased transparency, promote a product’s reputation through internationally recognised standards, support innovative product development, such as improving efficiency for energy, materials and transport costs, enable whole life cycle management, and become recognised by building assessment schemes.”

In addition, they can inform building information modelling (BIM) software to make comparisons and assess design options that improve a building’s environmental performance.

Patricia concludes:

“DHF continues to support the green agenda and the increasing move towards green certification.

“EPD are considered crucial in demonstrating continued sustainability and providing reliable information so one product can be compared with another by looking at the various lifecycle stages.”

Currently, the UK has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
